Manuel Noriega Files Lawsuit Over Video Game He Alleges Defamed Him

Submitted By Darren Smith, Weekend Contributor

Manuel NoriegaManuel Noriega, the former leader of Panama known for his indictment in the United States for drug smuggling, racketeering, and money laundering and his subsequent imprisonment, filed suit in Los Angeles County Superior Court alleging the game maker Activision Blizzard defamed him. The game in question is the popular “Call of Duty: Black Ops II”.

Manuel believes being portrayed “as a kidnapper, murderer and enemy of the state” in the game damaged his reputation. He further claims the company used his likeness and name in order to make money. Therefore, he is entitled to a share of the profits.

The game returned over a billion dollars in sales worldwide within months of release.

Manuel argues in the lawsuit that his portrayal “as a kidnapper, murderer and enemy of the state” in the 2012 video game damaged his reputation. The company used his image and name in order to make money, the lawsuit says, therefore he’s entitled to a share of the profits.

“Plaintiff was portrayed as an antagonist as the culprit of numerous fictional heinous crimes, creating the false impression that defendants are authorized to use plaintiff’s image and likeness,” the lawsuit claims.

The developers of the game hired personalities such as Oliver North for voice acting and consultation services. Manuel claims in his lawsuit he was not consulted or compensated for his depiction in the game. Additionally David Patraeus is portrayed as secretary of defense in one of the game scenarios.

Activision Blizzard did not immediately respond to a request for comment made by CNN.

  1. So Spinelli doesn’t think that 9/11 was an inside job….. He should join the ranks of adults who still believe in Father Christmas.

  2. thanks, Annie. It IS tiresome. I appreciate your words and btw, I’ve admired your willingness to engage with some of that same lack of respect for viewpoints that seem to rattle the daylights out of that one.

  3. Bill, I think there are many commenters here that understand where you are coming from regarding a certain repeat offender. Most of us have had to deal with the same behavior from this individual. It’s very tiresome.

  4. No, I have YOU pegged correctly. You’re either unable to understand what i said, or more likely, it’s the continuation of your libel, or intentional stupidity.
    Probably both.

  5. Bill, So I had you pegged correctly. Then what did I lie about? I’m being serious and straight. You called me a liar. Now, that’s something that was routine here pre 2014, but no longer. I said in my 4:35pm comment I would apologize if I were wrong. Now it appears you owe the apology for calling me a liar. What am I missing here? I don’t want the apology because I know you think you are the victim and it would be meaningless. I would just like to know what I said that was factually incorrect. I would like to end it w/ that. Tit for tat is useless. But, I do like tit.

  6. Last time, spinner man:

    1. I’ve said it should be illegal to hurt someone or property- Whether you are in a car or not. Whether you have or have not consumed alcohol, and that you should not be arrested merely because you may have consumed alcohol.

    2. There is a photo that appears to be of GHWB standing in front of the TSBD on 11-22-63. There is good reason to think that he was there in his capacity as a long-time CIA agent (since the mid-50’s). He may have had an operational responsibility of one kind of another – as he did in the stolen 1980 election, the attempt on Reagan’s life (as Mrs. Reagan believed), Iran-Contra, the invasions of Panama, Iraq etc.

    3. 9/11 was an inside job aka false flag operation. OBLadin was a long-time CIA asset and was merely a patsy.

I’ve tried to keep this simple enough so that you should no longer try to discredit my comments by “shooting” the messenger when you can’t refute or don’t like, the message.

  7. Name the lie. We have sparred over DUI many times in the past. You’re on the record as saying it should only be illegal if combined w/ personal or property accidents. Now, if I confused you w/ other people here I apologize. Wasn’t it you talking about Bush 41 in Dealey Plaza and don’t you blame 9/11 on the US govt.? It is tough to keep the conspiracy people straight @ times. But, I know the DUI stance is accurate.

  8. Isn’t it a violation of the rules here to spread lies about a commenter, Mr. Turley? Why does Mr. Spinelli get a pass? He’s posted these and other lies
many times in the past, and nothing happens to him.

If Mr. Spinelli has evidence for his dishonest statements, it is only fair that he be asked to provide it.

libel is a poor excuse for inability to construct a logical argument.

  9. Billy McWilliams is a truther and thinks DUI should not be illegal unless there is an accident. We can surmise who’s been popped for that offense! He thinks Bush 41 killed JFK. There’s a lot more stupid craziness, but that should suffice. Anyone w/ sense wears his scorn like a badge of honor. He is making my day. Thanks, Billy!

  10. No, NS, no one is “blasting” you. Only your amateurish way of avoiding discussion of things you either know little, or nothing about. Like Paul, you should get yourself informed so you can put together an actual argument. You’d probably feel better about yourself if you could begin to move away from the shallow end of the discussion pool.

  11. I know I’m on the right track when the limey and Wild Bill McWilliams are blasting me. I will shudder if they ever agree w/ me.

  12. Spinn elly — No wonder your comments here sound so wacky. If your education was from the Art Bell College of Knowledge and Late Night nonsense – as you said, then I, for one, will forgive your inability to form a logical argument.
