Glenn Greenwald has called out National Public Radio in a recent interview for a story by Dina Temple-Raston for a story that it aired on how a study had found “tangible evidence” that leaks by Edward Snowden had harmed security by showing terrorists that they have to develop more sophisticated encryption programs. However, that study was the work of a firm named “Recorded Future,” which Greenwald claims has been funded by the CIA to the tune of millions of dollars. Greenwald chastises Temple-Raston and NPR for not informing listeners that the source is a CIA funded outfit. He accuses NPR of essentially airing CIA talking points.
The company released a report called “How Al-Qaeda Uses Encryption Post-Snowden” in two parts in May and August on how “Snowden leaks influencing Al-Qaeda’s crypto product innovation.”

Temple-Raston responded to the release with a story entitled Big Data Firm Says It Can Link Snowden Data To Changed Terrorist Behavior. She interviewed Recorded Future’s CEO and co-founder Christopher Ahlberg who said that they began to delve more deeply into the issue when “We saw at least three major product releases coming out with different organizations with al-Qaida and associated organizations fairly quickly after the Snowden disclosures.” She reported:
As it turns out, Recorded Future and Reversing Labs discovered that al-Qaida didn’t just tinker at the edges of its seven-year-old encryption software; it overhauled it. The new programs no longer use much of what’s known as “homebrew,” or homemade algorithms. Instead, al-Qaida has started incorporating more sophisticated open-source code to help disguise its communications.
Greenwald calls the failure to inform listeners of the CIA connection “a pure and indisputable case of journalistic malpractice and deceit.” He also notes that stories running back to 2001 detail how al-Qaeda was fully aware of the need to develop more advanced forms of encryption. I cannot find any response from NPR to the allegations.
The cause and effect relationship of the report can clearly be challenged given the continual reports of U.S. intelligence interceptions before and after the Snowden disclosures. That makes the connection and possible funding of the CIA more problematic if true. I do believe that, if Greenwald is correct and this firm receives such a high level of funding from the CIA, it should have been disclosed.
Recorded Future takes on an ominous sound if it is, as Greenwald claims, a company that has received millions from the CIA. He alleges that “the investment arm of the CIA, In-Q-Tel, sits on the board of this company, and the researcher on whom they rely himself is the head of a company in a strategic partnership with the CIA.” The company’s motto is “creating an insightful world.”
Paul, It was the NAACP that sent out the whole video. Breitbart was selective in what he sent out. If he had sent out the whole video there wouldn’t be been just a brouhaha about it.
bettykath – cite your source.
raff, my comment about the NG is a reflection of my cynicism. Lots of NG are not at home defending the home front, they are fighting in one illegal war or another.
They could be surveillance drones but I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a manned helicopter with a sharpshooter on board.
not = no
bettykath – I have not problem with Sherrod herself. My problem is with the members of the NAACP who clapped their approval when she said she first denied the white farmer help. And Breitbart sent out the video unedited, it was someone else who edited the darn thing. They are fighting about it in court now. Both sides are trying to pry information from the Obama administration about how she got fired in the first place without a hearing.
raff, “Is the FAA ban providing the authorities free air space for their surveillance drones??”
Bingo! Don’t want any newspeople watching and recording. I heard a report at the cops are trying to limit access for on-the-ground reporters.
“He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.”
“He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.”
“He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power”
.
“He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:”
The FAA is banning flights over Ferguson?!
Paul,
You seem to be referring to the Breitbart video that was selectively edited and the immediate aftermath. The later aftermath is that Sherrod was offered her job back, that the President apologized and offered her a high position. She declined continuing to work for the government. The rest of the story that you wouldn’t see on Faux News:
In the full video, Sherrod related her experience in 1986 with the first white farmer to come to her for help.Sherrod said that his land was being sold, and “had in fact already been rented out from under him.” At first, she felt that he had a superior attitude toward her causing her to recall harsh aspect of her life in the South, including the murder of her father. Sherrod went on to say that she had not let that get in the way and did not discriminate against him, despite the fact she clearly says in the NAACP speech that she “didn’t give him the full force of what I could do.” They became very good friends as a result of her help. She admitted thinking at the time that white people had “all the advantages” but learned that poverty affected both races.
According to Sherrod, she did her job correctly by taking the farmer to a white lawyer who she thought could help him , and she looked for another lawyer when needed. Sherrod rejected claims that she was racist and said she “went all out” to help the man keep his farm. She said that the incident helped her learn to move beyond race, and she told the story to audiences to make that point.
Roger Spooner, the farmer, said on CNN that Sherrod is not a racist, that she did everything she could for his family; more than 20 years later, he and Sherrod remain friend. The Spooners credit Sherrod with helping them save their farm. “If it hadn’t been for her, We would’ve never known who to see or what to do.” Roger Spooner said. “She led us right to our success.” HIs wife Eloise Spooner, said that “after things kind of settled down, she brought Sherrod some tomatoes out of her garden and they had a good visit.”
Eloise Spooner recalled Sherrod as “nice-mannered, thoughtful, friendly; a good person.” The couple were surprised by the controversy. “I don’t know what brought up the racist mess”, Roger Spooner said. “They just want to stir up some trouble, it sounds to me in my opinion.” Eloise Spooner said that on seeing the story of Sherrod’s resignation, “I said, ‘That ain’t right. They have not treated her right.'”
The extended unedited video of her speech released by the NAACP showed that in her full speech, Sherrod emphasized what was only touched on in the excerpt, she said that she learned from the incident that poverty, not race, was the key factor in rural development. She said she ultimately worked hard to save the farmer’s land
Other references to race in Sherrod’s speech related to a story of her more recent help of a black family to prevent forced sale of their farmland. It was a case in which distant cousins, among numerous heirs, were forcing a sale of land that the family had owned since the grandfather bought it. She noted finding some honest lawyer who happened to be white, and also that the cousins in the North had lined up a white buyer.
Darren,
That is my assumption as well. How can the FAA be used for censoring what is going on in the streets and who requested that? The MO governor or local police authorities? Is the FAA ban providing the authorities free air space for their surveillance drones??
bettykath,
I don’t know if the MO National guard is in Afghanistan, but somebody needs to be in Ferguson. Why is the FAA banning flights over Ferguson??? Just who does that protect??
Larry, it sounds more like censorship than air traffic control purposes.

FERGUSON, Mo. — Missouri state Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal confronted Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson during a press conference Wednesday, asking why she was tear-gassed during a nonviolent protest.
Chappelle-Nadal, a Democrat, said she had been tear-gassed while peacefully protesting the death of Michael Brown, the unarmed African-American teenager shot to death by a police officer on Saturday.
“I just wanted to know if I was going to be gassed again, like I was on Monday night,” Chappelle-Nadal asked. “We couldn’t get out, and we were peacefully sitting. I Just wanted to know if I’m going to be gassed again?”
I agree that NPR should be disclosing all possible connections the interviewees might have with our friends at the CIA. Anything or anyone who is dealing with the CIA should not be trusted.
Annie, the MO National Guard is probably in Afghanistan, just like the LA NG when Katrina hit.
The Eric Clapper guy (liar liar pants are on fire) has a lot of Stalin in him.
The other two Convergence theorists were John Kenneth Galbraith and Clark Kerr.
Barkin Dog’s political historian who coined the word “convergence” when predicting how the Soviet Union and Red China would move right towards capitalism and the United States and Britain would swing right towards commie or nazi fascism was George F. Kennan. I had this in my notes for my training before coming to planet Earth to learn about the antfarm.
“All things considered”
Well, not so much.
How about “Some things considered, some things we will deceive you on, and some things we just won’t talk about”
Darren: 1. thanks for your insight and 2. could you please retrieve my comment?
I checked in spam and moderation but did not see one. Perhaps someone else retrieved it for you?
if im not mistaken the cia during the JFK murder and investigation told the corporation outright they were outside the reach of them and would do what they wanted when they wanted… its well known the elites have been funding both sides of every war from the beginning. just as they own all sides of the polietrickal side of it also.
theres no money for much needed jobs and education but plenty for specialized military weapons and supposedly unknown about 3 letter agencies along with billions to give to so called consultants. the cia is behind any and all terrorist false flag attacks the corporation sets them into place as a way to keep the people in fear and brainwashed as to who the real terrorist really are.
al qaeda definition means = the toilet. what terrorist group would name themselves the toilet.
hamas is also owned and ran by the cia/mossad like the brotherhood of muslims and many others.
