Report: Justice Department May Shutdown Zimmerman Civil Rights Investigation . . . quietly

zimmermantrayon-martin-picture1When the Obama Administration sent in a team to investigate civil rights violations in the 2012 shooting death of Trayvon Martin, some of us expressed doubt over the basis for such a charge as well as the timing of the federal move into the case. Indeed, I was highly skeptical of how the case was charged and prosecuted. Now the Washington Post is reporting that, after two years of investigation, Justice officials do not believe that they have sufficient evidence to bring federal charges.

George Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter in a state trial in Sanford, Fla., last year. Various community and political leaders demanded that Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. bring a federal civil rights case against him. The protests led to considerable pressure for the Obama Administration to act and the investigation by the Civil Rights Section helped quell some of the discontent over the verdict. However, the case remained weak for both a second-degree murder case as well as a civil rights charge. While many read racist motivations behind Zimmerman motives, Zimmerman succeeded in establishing that he was acting in self-defense.

The Administration has also taken the same quick response to the shooting in Ferguson, though that investigation is centering on the police department as a whole.

  1. Anyone who makes vile comments about “defecating and urinating” into someone’s mouth like Bashir did, and still be revered and admired by people, tells you all you need to know. Doubling down on hate. But, haters gotta hate.

  2. Laser D,

Squeeky said: “Well, I don’t see Saint Trayvon as anything other than a young thug who picked the wrong victim.”

And there you have it. Trayvon and others like him are dead because some people in our society stereotype young black men, consider them to be thugs…and up to no good. Martin Bashir made some good points in his comparison of Trayvon Martin to former president George W. Bush. When rich white people transgress, it’s acceptable because they’re upstanding people who may have made mistakes and should be forgiven. It’s different for black men. If they trash talk, or sport gold teeth, or wear hoodies, etc., they’re called thugs.

Zimmerman stalked Trayvon Martin. Martin had done nothing wrong. An altercation ensued. The young black man was killed by the wannabe policeman. Zimmerman is the good guy in the story; Trayvon is the bad guy. Case closed.

  3. MikeA, Thanks for referencing your post from the archives in August 2013. Some folks here are ashamed of the history here and don’t want any mention of the past. You are a consistent, thoughtful, poster and commenter. I note a few things. A controversial poem from our poet laureate, Squeeky. Another video from the vile, Martin Bashir. And, that comments were suspended.

  4. Daniel Frankovitch,

As long as you remain ignorant, you will never come to grips with the outcome of the trial.

“after being told by 911 to stay in his car”

    Nope. Never happened.

“ignore the orders given to me by 911 dispatch”

    911 dispatch doesn’t give orders.

    “start a fight”

More fantasy. Not backed up by any evidence whatsoever.

I think you are the one who has relied on bigotry in order to form your opinion.

Mike Appleton, I’ll give you a seat in the boat right next to Mr. Frankovitch.

I’m glad to see neither of you are wasting your white guilt.

  5. 1. Mr. Zimmerman will have legal problems in the future because he lives his life in fear of one thing or another.

    2. The civil rights investigation was a political response to community anger. That it is quietly dying is not surprising.

    3. My view of Mr. Zimmerman and the Trayvon Martin verdict remains unchanged. http://jonathanturley.org/2013/08/11/racism-once-removed/

  6. Jack, I was told here many times last year that white guilt does not exist, only white privilege. They do love that white privilege meme. I have a black buddy who messes w/ liberal white folk here in Madison, particularly women. He gets them stammering and apologizing like crazy. We tell him he goes to far sometimes. Of late, he has cut back. When he stays wnl it is really funny.

  7. JT uses the word “thug” and has been called “RAAAACIST” for doing so. Fly that flag on some other echo chamber blog. It don’t fly here!

Kudos on the non PC poem Squeeky. You are our poet laureate.

  8. I like how GZ harassing a kid after being told by 911 to stay in his car, now thanks to Saint Squeek, is now portrayed as Trayvon picking the wrong victim.

If I stalk someone from my car, call the police because I think the person is a criminal, ignore the orders given to me by 911 dispatch and get my gun and exit the car, then go to the person I have been stalking and start a fight, then, when the fight doesn’t go my way, shoot the person I was stalking… I’m sorry Squeek, how is GZ a victim? If I break into your house and you shoot me, I’m not the victim, why is GZ a victim for starting the entire event?

GZ started the entire thing. If you want to think GZ is something other than a gun toting thug, that is your business, but how exactly is being the initial aggressor now painted as victimhood?

Maybe you should look up what ‘victim’ means?

I wish I knew what was so wrong with people in this country that they cannot set aside their bigotry and politics to at least be able to correctly identify the players in something as simple as the Martin shooting. Trayvon was no saint, but GZ wasn’t the victim either. Had GZ done what he had been told, no one would have died, there would have been no outrage, and GZ would still be the same dangerous thug he has always been. An adult behaved badly, but people will call him a victim?

No wonder this nation is going to hell.

  9. @LaserD

Well, I don’t see Saint Trayvon as anything other than a young thug who picked the wrong victim. And I don’t see the Trayvonazis as anything other than a pack of race baiters. And if you don’t like My Goodnight Prayer, maybe it is because it is just hitting way too close to home.

  10. Boy squeeky; heretofore I thought you a bore;
but now you went and dug a hole for yourself.

I hope the Professor has the kindness to remove your “thug” remarks.

    Very uncool…..

  11. Oh, and since we back on to the thug, Trayvon Martin, it is time to resurrect my The Good Night Prayer:

    My Goodnight Prayer

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
And if my liberal friends get mugged,
Please let it be a young Black thug!
So when they get a busted snout,
And all their brains are running out,
They’ll gently go to those good nights
    As Champions of Civil Rights!
    Amen.

  12. bettykath;

Your thread at 11:14 is well put.
(though I hate to see another hurt by this waste of humanity).

    Could you do me a favor and click on the Obamacrat link above;
and post a comment to Juesseppi that (once he changed formats)
I’m unable to post to on his Blog anymore.
(I also forgot what his email is).

  13. Look, I don’t think Z was innocent. However, that was the jury’s determination. Their verdict was NOT GUILTY BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT based on the evidence presented before it. That is the system and it played out, whether people want to accept it or not. Whether Z is innocent or not is irrelevant.

Let’s not rehash the Z trial. Let’s focus on this topic – What basis did the DOJ have in investigating and what were the results.

And ditto what Karen S. said – whatever the results are make them public.

  14. @Elaine and Dredd

Nope. Squeeking for you guys. You’re like a bunch of little kids who think you are supposed to be able to do whatever you want, regardless, and if somebody says that you shouldn’t, or that you’re wrong, or that you are being sinful, then they are just nosing into your business. All the while, you yourselves are merrily engaged in telling everybody else what they should and shouldn’t do and how they should and shouldn’t think.

  15. More of our tax dollars well spent. And why is the DOJ investigating Ferguson when not one scintilla of evidence that Brown shooting was racially motivated? Same thing with Z and I suspect will be the same outcome in Brown DOJ investigation – no charges.
