Report: Justice Department May Shutdown Zimmerman Civil Rights Investigation . . . quietly

zimmermantrayon-martin-picture1When the Obama Administration sent in a team to investigate civil rights violations in the 2012 shooting death of Trayvon Martin, some of us expressed doubt over the basis for such a charge as well as the timing of the federal move into the case. Indeed, I was highly skeptical of how the case was charged and prosecuted. Now the Washington Post is reporting that, after two years of investigation, Justice officials do not believe that they have sufficient evidence to bring federal charges.

George Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter in a state trial in Sanford, Fla., last year. Various community and political leaders demanded that Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. bring a federal civil rights case against him. The protests led to considerable pressure for the Obama Administration to act and the investigation by the Civil Rights Section helped quell some of the discontent over the verdict. However, the case remained weak for both a second-degree murder case as well as a civil rights charge. While many read racist motivations behind Zimmerman motives, Zimmerman succeeded in establishing that he was acting in self-defense.

The Administration has also taken the same quick response to the shooting in Ferguson, though that investigation is centering on the police department as a whole.

Such terrible folks who would question the motives and acts of a cop wannabe who stalked and killed an unarmed black teenager. Saint George Zimmerman saved the neighborhood from a kid with a can of iced tea and package of Skittles. What a brave soul! PTL!

  9. The pacified styled (purported) interrogation by the police (who knew GZ was trying to become a cop and that his father was a former justice), actually wreaks of cronyism.

    If Trayvon had shot GZ; do you think the interview would have been the same?

  10. If you have to go around bragging who you are and that THAT is why others need to fear for their life… it’s usually because the reputation more accurately portrays who you are than what your defense team put together.

    The driver, 35-year-old Matthew Apperson, told Lake Mary police officers that a passenger in a truck stopped at a light next to his car on a busy street in this Orlando suburb, rolled down his window and yelled, “Hey, what’s your problem? Why you shaking your finger?”

    Apperson said he was listening to music with his windows rolled up at the time, and that the passenger’s yelling was unprovoked.

    The truck’s driver then asked Apperson, “Do you know who I am?” according to a police report. Apperson said he believed it was Zimmerman.

    “George Zimmerman was the driver, and they were threatening to kick my ass and to shoot me,” Apperson told a police dispatcher in a 911 call.

  14. But, Jack, I watched the trial and it was the correct verdict. Why the Trayvon people here don’t focus their anger on that evil and horrible prosecutor is beyond me.

  16. My reference was the medical report itself, not a reporter’s summary. The report said there was a possible closed fracture based on GZ’s complaint. She recommended an x-ray to determine whether or not there was a fracture. GZ declined the x-ray. She and the EMTs both noted that there was no blood inside his nose, it was all external.The injuries to his head were “lacerations”. No concussion.

  17. Jack, Just my read on him. Seemed like a Barney Fife type to me w/ a chip on his shoulder. If I were a juror on a civil trial assigning the % of negligence, 60% Martin, 40% Zimmerman. But mostly it is my read on his demeanor in interviews and in the courtroom. I read the body language and it told me his attorneys didn’t particularly like him. Although, his attorneys were sharp. They adjusted their body language in front of the jury. But, when the jury was out, it was a pretty easy read. And, since the trial, he has corroborated my assessment. There were no heroes in this incident, IMHO.

    What was the distance between the two pin pricks? What are the dimensions of the sight? What part of the sight is sharp enough to cause the pin pricks?

    This kind of information would be readily available to anyone who has a theory based on actual evidence.
