Italian Nurse Accused Of Killing As Many As 38 Patients

v3-TwitterDanielap copyOne of the stories making the news here in Italy is the arrest of Daniela Poggiali, 42, a nurse who is accused of killing at least 38 of her patients because she found them or their relatives to be annoying. She was initially charged in the death of an elderly patient and now police believe that she is a serial killer.

The case of Rosa Calderoni draw attention of the authorities because she been admitted for a routine illness and when she died there were high levels of potassium in her bloodstream. At least 10 other deaths are now being listed as “very suspicious”.

Prosecutor Rossella Materia called her a sadist who “who draws pleasure in provoking the death of the patients in her care.” One picture on her phone reportedly shows her giving a thumbs up next to when of her patients who had died seconds before. The public statements are an interesting dimension since Italy prosecutes people for criminal libel, as in the abusive case against the parents of Amanda Knox that we discussed earlier. While comments against the police can bring a charge, it clearly does not apply when prosecutors make such comments against individuals.

Even a colleague described her as a “cold person who was always eager to work.” This included the allegation from a co-worker that Poggiali would give patients strong laxatives at the end of her shift to make work more difficult for the nurses taking over.

Poggiali told police that she is innocent and the victim of a conspiracy by her enemies.

The case could prove very difficult given the length of time that has passed.

  1. Darren did not reveal her real name. Annie is just another alias, and she is still anonymous on this site.

I think revealing someone’s real name is a different matter.

  2. JT has put anonymity first in the past. This is wrong……. not that I have any say so but just voicing my opinion.

  3. 19 additional aliases, all to go after a single poster.

Let’s start afresh and everyone just focus on the issues and not the people. Please.

  4. “Emily, Viking, Brownnoser, Don’t Be This Guy, Feminazi, Badger, Jenny Bee, Henry, Giuseppi, Emilio, Hannelori, Angela1234, Teddy, Ruxpin, SailorSeeSea, Realist, Doomsday Dolly, Mr, Spumoni, Mrs. Spindelli, ” Wow…. I guess I was under the assumption that one’s anonymity was protected and the guest bloggers were not suppose to reveal the identity of the sockpuppets. I think if this is done to one person then it should be equally done to others.

  5. Yes Darren, why am I not surprised at your response? JT made a mistake putting the administrative duties in your hands. Shame on you too Darren. When Mike Spindell outed Spinelli as the troll who used the alias last January, he was chastised for it. Now you’ve done the very same thing. You don’t deserve JT’s confidence.

  6. Wait, what? How is that, exactly? How do other posters on a blog enable a bully? How have you been bullied on this thread? Please provide direct references. Please provide a direct quote on how I’ve become a bully, ever, on this blog. How have I, specifically, become a bully?

If you’re going to call names, back it up.

    1. Annie – just so I get your argument right. If you support a bully then you are a bully. Therefore, when you support the bullies that came over from Gene’s site yesterday, you became a bully. Frankly, your logic leaves much to be desired. Having gone to Marquette I would have thought the Jebes would have taught you better.

  7. DBQ – you’ll get no answer, and neither will I. I didn’t agree with her, so I’m a bully.

I’ve complained before out emotional arguments in general that ignore data or queries.

  8. @ Karen

The charge of being bullied comes out when there is no longer any rational responses that are forthcoming. Evidently, bullying consists of disagreeing with a position, questioning the logic or being asked to present facts to support arguments.

For instance. What part of my post, which I copied and presented, was offensive to Annie about the Nurse’s union? I have no idea. Still waiting. I suppose that is being a bully by requesting an answer to an accusation that was made about me.

  9. Nice group of new commenters JT has, it’s really ‘enhanced’ the commentariat.

    1. Annie – I am sure you are welcome at Gene’s site if you feel uncomfortable here.

  10. Btw, Nick ‘ s comment didn’t say you were any such thing. His metaphor was about how your response to a union comment would be similar to that of a drunk having a bottle of booze put in front of them; you wouldn’t ignore it and you proved him correct…big time.

  11. Karen, I think you may have a bit of the bully in you too. Is it a conservative trait? I’m beginning to think so. Oh well what a despicable twist this thread took. Not surprising though, it’s seems it happens daily now.
