Italian Nurse Accused Of Killing As Many As 38 Patients

v3-TwitterDanielap copyOne of the stories making the news here in Italy is the arrest of Daniela Poggiali, 42, a nurse who is accused of killing at least 38 of her patients because she found them or their relatives to be annoying. She was initially charged in the death of an elderly patient and now police believe that she is a serial killer.

The case of Rosa Calderoni draw attention of the authorities because she been admitted for a routine illness and when she died there were high levels of potassium in her bloodstream. At least 10 other deaths are now being listed as “very suspicious”.

Prosecutor Rossella Materia called her a sadist who “who draws pleasure in provoking the death of the patients in her care.” One picture on her phone reportedly shows her giving a thumbs up next to when of her patients who had died seconds before. The public statements are an interesting dimension since Italy prosecutes people for criminal libel, as in the abusive case against the parents of Amanda Knox that we discussed earlier. While comments against the police can bring a charge, it clearly does not apply when prosecutors make such comments against individuals.

Even a colleague described her as a “cold person who was always eager to work.” This included the allegation from a co-worker that Poggiali would give patients strong laxatives at the end of her shift to make work more difficult for the nurses taking over.

Poggiali told police that she is innocent and the victim of a conspiracy by her enemies.

The case could prove very difficult given the length of time that has passed.

  1. “Darren was put in a terrible spot” No excuse for naming 19 aliases of a female poster and not revealing the aliases of others. I was told that according the civility rules it is improper to name any.

    1. SWM – and I think you are dead wrong and will gladly defend Darren to his death. If I have this correct, using your reasoning, I can come on as you, and there is no problem, and there is nothing you can do about it. Personally, I do not think that is right.

  2. Tyger, I saw your mug appear last night. I am secure enough in my sexuality to say you are one good lookin’ dude. A nun picked out poems for us to memorize, The good sister picked for me, Blake’s “Tyger, Tyger burning bright, in the forest of the night, what immortal hand or eye could frame thy fearful symmetry.” I think I could still do most of the rest, but I’ll spare all. Is that the derivation of your name? I said to you previously, you are a welcomed addition here.

You mentioned what I believe to be one of the KEYS to civility, ignoring comments. There are pernicious trolls here whom I ALWAYS ignore. But, it takes true self esteem and self discipline, which is really the only discipline worth a damn. Tyger, I have people I have ignored for MONTHS, but they just keep coming @ me. I guess that’s why they’re trolls. It’s mind boggling. I pray some folks will ignore me. Like yourself, I use my real name and give personal information making me quite identifiable. There is an inherent self editing that goes w/ that. That’s why JT requires his weekend bloggers to abandon aliases and use their real names. There is a big downside to that. I had a troll go after mia famiglia!! My wife is an author and has 2 books on Amazon. This woman wrote VILE comments on her Amazon books pages about my daughter being obese because I sexually abused her and my wife, the author, covering it up!! Amazon quickly deleted, but this angry woman kept using NUMEROUS aliases and putting up nasty comments. This troll found my wives personal webpage and threatened her.

There was a post just a couple days ago about the 63 year old divorcee vile troll who killed herself after being outed. Olly and I had a conversation about ethics not catching up w/ technology. I’m a PI and use sources. I had to learn how to deal w/ anonymous sources. They are an entirely different species than upfront ones. Their information is often false and they virtually always have an agenda. The key is first finding out the agenda, although it’s often immediately identifiable. Now, I’ve gotten some very valuable leads and information from anonymous sources. But, I’ve also gotten many lies and misinformation. It’s a craft dealing w/ sources. I try and use that same craftwork dealing w/ trolls.

Darren was put in a terrible spot. He is an honorable and judicious man. He is not an ideologue. I have seen him blossom from a valuable commenter to an even more valuable weekend blogger. NO weekend blogger works harder than he. If you need a comment retrieved, he’s the man who almost always will do it. if someone has a problem w/ Darren Smith, well he’s not the problem.

  3. Tyger:

True enough — for you. However anonymity is the bedrock of the Internet and specifically protected in our civility rules:

” It is strictly forbidden to use the site to publish research regarding private information on any poster or guest blogger. There are times when a poster reveals information about themselves as relevant to an issue or their experiences. That is fine and is sometimes offered to broaden or personalize an issue. For example, I am open about my background and any current cases to avoid questions of conflicts or hidden agendas. However, researching people or trying to strip people of anonymity is creepy and will not be allowed.”

    That applies to everyone.

true, sometimes it’s like kids in a sprinkler

  5. Wow! All this unhappiness over the use of aliases and berating others!

It all seems pretty simple to me. I use my real name, include a link to my own personal website that provides a lot more information about me, and I finally figured out how to use my photo as my avatar so you can see what I actually look like. I freely express my own opinions and ideas. I try to say what I mean and mean what I say. I try to be respectful of others and their opinions, even when they disagree with me, as people everywhere often do. It’s okay. Everyone is entitled to their beliefs and opinions. Lots of people dislike my beliefs, lack of beliefs, and frequently unpopular opinions. Some don’t appreciate my crazy sense of humor, but even the jokes I make, which are mostly puns and wordplay, are not meant to be hurtful to others.

Ideas and opinions should be open to challenge, or agreement, by anyone. That’s what makes discussions and consequent development of different perspectives by open-minded people possible. Personal attacks shut this all down and benefit no one. If someone says things in a blog comment that are inappropriate or just crazy to me, I don’t have to respond in kind or respond at all. The craziness is usually pretty obvious to everyone else without my pointing it out. I get ignored a lot, too. Oh, well. If I do say anything that is offensive to reasonable people, I will own up to it, since the objectives of my comments are not intended to be offensive. And I’m not trying to be self-righteous or above anyone by saying all this. Just stating my position so you know where I’m at. If expressing this is unacceptable etiquette here, I’m sorry. All the water being splashed around just looked like so much fun, I had to jump in.

  6. Someone please explain what a sock puppet is. As for the Ebola epidemic which threatens to anal ize the world: is this not the intentional creation of a CIA project to wipe out places on Earth that America doesn’t like? And it get out of hand so to speak and is now spreading around? In my prior life as a human (acutally two lives back) I was a kid in about 1952 or so and got a polio vaccine which gave me polio. Somehow I got over it without being crippled. Since then when I walk by the signs which invite my half blind guy to go into the Walmart and get a flue shot, I drag him forward and away from such threats to life. A year from now Ebola will be a bigger topic than it is now and we wont be blaming Obama or Obumbo or whatever you folks call him.

“It just strikes me as really odd to judge someone’s intelligence or cognitive abilities, based on political part”

Why..,,,..you might even be able to call that type of mindset…bigotry.

A terribly odd thing to do, to typecast and disparage people based on your own biased perceptions of what you think they are.

I do believe that is one of the definitions of the term.

“Bigotry is a state of mind where a person strongly and unfairly dislikes other people, ideas, etc.[1] Some examples include personal beliefs, race, religion, national origin, gender, disability, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, or other group characteristics.”

    Bigots never recognize themselves.

    1. Dust Bunnny Queen Hi – is it safe out here? I just opened my e mail and saw 435 unopened e mails. Wow. What happened here. lolol. This was a funny thread at 3 am. 🙂

  8. SWM – Annie just claimed that the sock puppets were meant to be obviously her.

I think she just scuttled her argument.

  9. mespo:

“For the record, I never asked conservatives to leave the planet. First, it wouldn’t happen and I do like the rest of the galaxy. (the latter is a joke). Second, the “reptilian mind” refers to stage of normal human brain development and structure coined by neuroscientist Paul MacLean in the 60s. It involves the impulses of aggression and dominance so evident in conservative politics. See Atwater, Lee. It’s not a pejorative.”

You were right. My apologies. It was Rcampbell who said that, with Annie agreeing, but that it would be more boring on Earth. You were the “reptilian brain” commenter about how all conservatives have less evolved or developed minds.

Could you address my point, that while you’ve stated that you helped author the civility rules, you, a guest blogger, have made disparaging personal comments about all conservatives? Do you see a problem here? Saying that all conservatives have arrested development?

I oppose Liberal policies as tax-and-spend, but I don’t think that all Liberals are bad, or stupid. It just strikes me as really odd to judge someone’s intelligence or cognitive abilities, based on political party.

  10. Ken, Since the nurse w/ Ebola flew to Cleveland I think ANY plane w/ a suspected Ebola infection should be diverted there.

  11. I’m not sure what type of Ebola cleaners the airlines use for bathrooms. It might be time for Ty-D-bol. I think I’ll hold it in until the flight lands.
By the way, does the FAA have an Ebola protocol procedure, or is it make it up as you go along?

  12. Maybe the Administration’s plan is to make everyone too afraid to go to the polls and vote, and win by the ‘extra’ stuffed ballots they got laying around.
