Italian Nurse Accused Of Killing As Many As 38 Patients

v3-TwitterDanielap copyOne of the stories making the news here in Italy is the arrest of Daniela Poggiali, 42, a nurse who is accused of killing at least 38 of her patients because she found them or their relatives to be annoying. She was initially charged in the death of an elderly patient and now police believe that she is a serial killer.

The case of Rosa Calderoni draw attention of the authorities because she been admitted for a routine illness and when she died there were high levels of potassium in her bloodstream. At least 10 other deaths are now being listed as “very suspicious”.

Prosecutor Rossella Materia called her a sadist who “who draws pleasure in provoking the death of the patients in her care.” One picture on her phone reportedly shows her giving a thumbs up next to when of her patients who had died seconds before. The public statements are an interesting dimension since Italy prosecutes people for criminal libel, as in the abusive case against the parents of Amanda Knox that we discussed earlier. While comments against the police can bring a charge, it clearly does not apply when prosecutors make such comments against individuals.

Even a colleague described her as a “cold person who was always eager to work.” This included the allegation from a co-worker that Poggiali would give patients strong laxatives at the end of her shift to make work more difficult for the nurses taking over.

Poggiali told police that she is innocent and the victim of a conspiracy by her enemies.

The case could prove very difficult given the length of time that has passed.

Yes. The technology to decontaminate would have been a good thing. Would have…….Unfortunately, the government seems to be always trying to shut the barn door AFTER the horses have bolted. It might be possible to set up some emergency decontamination units in the metropolitan hospital areas, but that is going to leave all the rest of the podunk hospitals in the US on their own. They should be doing this immediately. They should have been training in place and specialized units to handle these types of epidemically transmitted diseases. This is what the CDC SHOULD have been doing.

The reality is that the outbreaks are likely to be centered, at first, in the urban areas where the travelers from the infected areas are going to congregate and where the chance to spread to many people is greater.

There SHOULD have been already in every hospital, some sort of decontamination procedures, suits and training. Instead the poor medical workers, nurses and even the housekeeping staff are left to try to figure this out on their own. Then when the poor, brave, doctors, nurses and staff get ill, the head of the CDC blames them. The containment and monitoring efforts are haphazard and a joke. One infected person, of any communicable disease, can have contact with many people and then they contact others. The spread is exponential. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exponential_growth

Instead of concentrating on idiocies like why lesbian women are fat, or other wasteful studies that have nothing to do with communicable DISEASE CONTROL, the government should have been preparing for this type of outbreak. Not just Ebola but other wildly communicable diseases.

  2. I don’t understand the logic to allow the Ebola virus to get inside our borders BEFORE the protocol to prevent an outbreak is firmly in place. I doubt this virus is looking for a pathway to citizenship or cares a lick about amnesty. I cannot think of a more compelling reason to secure our borders than this threat.

    Dredd,
Itsy bitsy sounds cute but what we really want is lean and agile. If you think of government as cholesterol, with the constitutional framework as HDL and the administrative state as LDL, then you’ll understand we want to significantly reduce the bad cholesterol.

Saint Raygun wanted it itsy bitsy enough to “drown in a bathtub.”

I think of the epigovernment as oily (The Peak of Sanity – 3) which is deadly.

    1. Gasoline is under $3 a gallon in Arizona. Just passing that on to make people jealous if yours isn’t. 🙂

  4. DBQ, Love the black humor. Shrinks will tell you black humor performs a healthy function in dealing w/ the things that frighten us. Black humor is of course, not PC.

  5. Perhaps th last one can walk through some sort of chamber that sprays them down, like in the movies. Som technology would be great here.

  6. “Then they need a second person to help remove the gear, who is also wearing protective gear and so on.”

So, the last guy in the chain of removing the gear from the other person before him who is wearing the gear is kind of screwed, then. Or else someone, maybe the first person who had their gear removed has to suit up and the daisy chain starts again. Infinite gear removal!

I know this is deadly serious but I couldn’t help it
I had a vision of the infinity reflections of Citizen Kane.

Ken, This little CDC weasel, Frieden, was the head of Mayor Bloomberg’s Health Dept. in NYC and came up w/ the banning jumbo soda’s!! Obama put our lives in the hands of the jumbo soda ban guy. He needs to go now. I like Fauci who preceded this idiot, get him back in that job TODAY!
    ==============================
Propensity for coke libel and the looser ad hominum sludge:

Frieden’s work on tuberculosis in New York fostered public awareness and helped improve public funding (city, state and federal) for TB control. The epidemic was controlled rapidly, reducing overall incidence by nearly half and cutting multidrug-resistant tuberculosis by 80%. The city’s program became a model for tuberculosis control. From 1996 to 2002, Frieden was based in India, assisting with national tuberculosis control efforts. As a medical officer for the World Health Organization on loan from the CDC, he helped the government of India implement the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program (RNTCP). The 2008 RNTCP status report estimates the nationwide program resulted in 8 million treatments and 1.4 million saved lives. While in India, Frieden worked to establish a network of Indian physicians to help India’s state and local governments implement the program and helped the Tuberculosis Research Center in Chennai, India, establish a program to monitor the impact of tuberculosis control services.

Frieden served as head of the New York City DOHMH from 2002–2009. The agency employs more than 6,000 people with an annual budget of $1.5 billion. Frieden led a period marked by improvements in the health of New Yorkers.

    etc.

  9. Paul, that’s all well and good amd perhaps a discussion for another time, but the Ebola discussion is far more interesting and pressing at the moment.

What is this thread I just read about Obama causing Ebola because he is from Africa? We all know that his father was from Africa. Hell the problem with Obama’s lineage is that he was born in Hawaii and went to the high falutan high school where all the kids go off to Harvard and Yale. My half blind guy for whom I am guide dog, replies to people who criticize Obama for “being Black”. Half blind guy says: “Obama is half White.” I am half Black Labrador and half Irish Setter. When I am around the guy like the Mayor in Blazing Saddles who said “Not the Irish!” then I say I am a Black Lab. When the bigots come round and use the N word then I say that I am an Irish Setter.

Have you heard of the geneticist who got in trouble for not flattering civilization:

Then I found out that the author Dr. E.M. McCarthy was serious about his hypothesis when I closely read “Human Origins” at his website, “Georgia geneticist challenges evolution, links humans to pigs” at The SaportaReport, and “A chimp-pig hybrid origin for humans?” at Phys.org.

(The Germ Theory – of Government – 8).

    Stay orthodox woof woof.

  12. The nurses caring for Ebola patients needed to have protective gear on that can be sprayed down with bleach BEFORE taking it off. Then they need a second person to help remove th gear, who is also wearing protective gear and so on. The protective gear they used looked flimsy and not nearly protective enough considering the nature of the Ebola virus.

  14. Local yokels need to be held responsible for their professionalism or the lack thereof in cases in their hospitals.

The itsy bitsy government crowd wants more centralized government when locals fail.

But accountability lies with local hospitals.

The local yokels love it when others are blamed for their own failures, and will not make corrections when they are not held accountable.

  15. I think BarkingDog got into his human’s pot laced brownies and is experiencing hallucinations.

  16. My half blind guy for whom I am guide dog owns some condo rental properties. With my advice he has a policy of not renting units to nurses. The worst are female “travelling” nurses. If you combine that with one who moved here from New York then it is trailer trash. You will need fifty leaf size trash bags when they move out. Go to the outside front or side doors of a hospital and observe the dumb chumps out there smoking by the suicide cigarette butt can. About 90% will be in nurse outfits and the balance management or doctors. These are the people advising and providing health care. Cigarette smoking is dangerous. A hazard to your health. Does that mean anything to you? Guns are quicker. In the old folks home where my half blind guy has a brother whom we visit there are a few female nurses who provide off the program sex therapy for some of the old farts. They do it on the midnight shift. The nursing home has become popular over time. Most of the old farts’ younger kin know nothing about it.

  17. Doctors Without Borders has been treating Ebola patients from the beginning in Africa. They are not religiously affiliated.

Ok, hell has frozen over and I find myself in agreement with Spinelli. It may never ever happen again.

He blamed the Obama Administration for this and everything, again.

    Mr. ad nauseum.

The hospitals in the south are probably going to pick up on that too.

“Obama causes Ebola infections because he is from Africa !!!!!! ”

    Yeah, that’s the ticket.

  19. Nick,

Don’t panic. The CDC has this Ebola protocol covered. I’m shopping for bleach today. A lot of bleach.

Ebola Outbreak Boosts Odds of Mutation Helping It Spread:

Researchers have identified more than 300 new viral mutations in the latest strain of Ebola. Viruses such as Ebola, whose genomes are made from ribonucleic acid, are constantly mutating.
“Viruses don’t think. They make mutations that are good for them”. “If it helps the virus spread or replicate faster it will be around more.”

The AIDS virus mutated and still does today. AIDS + Ebola = ?
