Italian Nurse Accused Of Killing As Many As 38 Patients

v3-TwitterDanielap copyOne of the stories making the news here in Italy is the arrest of Daniela Poggiali, 42, a nurse who is accused of killing at least 38 of her patients because she found them or their relatives to be annoying. She was initially charged in the death of an elderly patient and now police believe that she is a serial killer.

The case of Rosa Calderoni draw attention of the authorities because she been admitted for a routine illness and when she died there were high levels of potassium in her bloodstream. At least 10 other deaths are now being listed as “very suspicious”.

Prosecutor Rossella Materia called her a sadist who “who draws pleasure in provoking the death of the patients in her care.” One picture on her phone reportedly shows her giving a thumbs up next to when of her patients who had died seconds before. The public statements are an interesting dimension since Italy prosecutes people for criminal libel, as in the abusive case against the parents of Amanda Knox that we discussed earlier. While comments against the police can bring a charge, it clearly does not apply when prosecutors make such comments against individuals.

Even a colleague described her as a “cold person who was always eager to work.” This included the allegation from a co-worker that Poggiali would give patients strong laxatives at the end of her shift to make work more difficult for the nurses taking over.

Poggiali told police that she is innocent and the victim of a conspiracy by her enemies.

The case could prove very difficult given the length of time that has passed.

  1. Yes, The civility rules are published. Specifically, if one chooses to use sockpuppets it is their business and have not previously been outed until Annie was singled out.

    1. Linda L. – ask Annie, she is the local expert. I am surprised they allowed you on this blog without taking the blog policy exam. It is both written and oral. Takes about two hours. The rest of us have taken it. Standards must have slipped with JT gone.

  5. I have no clue who Annie is or is not, it’s none of my business. I do think that the attack on women is preventing serious dialogue. Maybe, just may, you should stay focused on the topic of the posting rather than the poster.

  11. What happened here? Why all of the negativity? I am finding it hard to find a blog that still allows this. Doesn’t this site have some neutral monitor to delete post based on a ration basis. If a post is removed its called directly to the offending persons attention and just shows that a post was removed.

    1. DBQ – Over time I have taken many of these so-called personality tests. My wife was forced to take one a work and then made me buy the damn book and take the damn test. 🙂 Each of them has come out with a slightly different result. Personally, I don’t put a lot of store in them. However, the Book of Birthdays is right one about my personality. 😉

    I believe there is some truth to that but I don’t believe any particular political persuasion has cornered the market on irrationality. I see it in my Missouri Synod Lutheran Church as well. I’m the guy asking questions in Bible study that make the crowd murmur in shock but then I will have several of these folks come up to me afterwards to privately tell me they agree.

    This Group Think mentality is destructive and brute force is not the answer to civil dialog. I still think reason exists in these emotional minds and I’m just trying to figure out what combination of words can get them to use it.
