North Carolina Woman Charged In Road Rage Incident Caught On Tape

Screen Shot 2015-01-30 at 3.33.19 PMNorth Carolina driver Kristen Leigh Phillips, 40, is facing misdemeanor charges after she was caught on videotape in a bizarre road road incident that left a small child screaming and a mother driver in shock. The video of the victim is below.

The incident began when Phillips allegedly passed another car on a two-lane road in a reckless fashion and the victim, Sherri Hastings, called 911 to report the incident. What followed is scary as Phillips made repeated abrupt stops and then got out and charged at the second car.

Phillips is shown reaching into the window and taking a swing at Hastings, who was trying to close her window as her young granddaughter was screaming in terror. Phillips then went back to her truck but turned and yelled “Fuck you” as she held up both of her middle fingers.

Phillips has been charged with assault and battery, communicating threats, and injury to personal property. There is really no defense that I can see with such a videotape and Phillips will presumably seek a plea agreement to drop the assault or threat charge, which is the most damaging for her record. Since they are all misdemeanors however a prosecutor may be reluctant to yield given the publicity and the strength of the evidence — as well as the presence of the child.

  1. Kudos on manning up, Anarchist. By the way, someone is stating on another thread you cannot be liberal and an anarchist, it’s one or the other. I say the 2 are not mutually exclusive. You’re our resident anarchist. You seem pretty liberal to me.

“You are apparently lying….or at best interpreting my words incorrectly.”

You’re right, I should have paid more attention. I misinterpreted your comment. Sorry.

  3. Aridog-

“I called you for “trolling” because that is what you were doing.”

I gave a reasonable opposing opinion, so of course you view that as trolling. Some of you people are highly intolerant of opposing opinions, no matter how rational they are- like my view on this matter, for instance. Of course, you’re most likely a little bitter at my reaction to your revelation that you are armed 24/7 for no real reason, but oh well. If you regularly engage in reckless and foolish behavior like carrying a gun when there is no real need, you should learn to tolerate criticism. Violent crime has been dropping steadily for over 20 years, so your fear of the world around you, your perception that your society is your enemy, is based upon unfounded paranoia. With that gun on your hip and that bullet in your pocket, you present more danger to the world around you than that world presents to you.

You might as well get used to the idea that I’m really not too concerned with your opinion, and I’ll never seek your approval.

    Happypappies-

You are all over the map and you go from jeckyll to hyde with no rhyme or reason. I suspect you might be schizophrenic. What is your diagnosis, anyway?

“What a ridiculous comment you just made to all of us.

I am going to ignore it.”

You’re not doing such a good job with that.

“I gave you a long and fair argument about 2 weeks ago which you ignored regarding Charles Finney and his Evangelical Morality.”

I didn’t read it. As I’ve stated before, I like Finney. I’ve also read most of his works. I don’t feel any need to argue about his morality, especially with someone I suspect to be mentally ill.

    1. Yep

Pretending great knowledge of so many things and so much control over it all until he gets to the mental illnes thing.

Second time he has called me that.

      Hi Mespo

  4. Anarchist 2.0….I called you for “trolling” because that is what you were doing. “You people” is it? You want tolerance? Try showing some yourself.

Especially considering your comments that you don’t even venture into dangerous urban areas.

Please cite where I said that. I “venture” in to all parts of the city. And have my entire life. My daughter lives in the central city core. Comfortably.

You are apparently lying….or at best interpreting my words incorrectly. Or more likely, to fit your narrative.

BTW…I am the safest armed person you could ever be around anywhere. I have made it plain here several times that I do not consider it a first resort, or any intermediary resort, only a last resort….and very likely not to protect me, but someone else. I “carry” because I can. I’ve seen combat and know what I am doing…while I am sure you are just guessing.

Your knee-jerk reaction to my comment tells me what I need to know…your experience is very scant. You asked me to “guess again” about whether you are young or immortal…I give, which is it?

  6. Aridog-

“I’m guessing you are young and immortal.”

    Keep guessing.

“I suspect you are “trolling” for adverse comment. ”

Of course you are. I’ve learned that a lot of you people are so intolerant of opposing positions that you automatically accuse anyone expressing one of trolling.

This video is a good example of the law helping to reinforce negative social behavior. The lady with the camera was intentionally provoking the lady in front of her. She was being rude in a way that’s unnecessary and heightened the risk of confrontation. She was also driving like a maniac- tailgating a woman in wet conditions. Her behavior was appalling, and made worse in that she was doing it without concern for the child in the car. Now she feels justified because she managed harass that woman to her breaking point and then have her arrested.

” Seriously, I am always armed”

Well then if anyone is going to kill you, it’ll probably be you on accident. What’s with you people that carry guns everywhere? Has the television really gotten so far in your head that you think that’s necessary? You realize that your odds of injuring or killing yourself with that gun are higher than the odds of that gun protecting your life and safety? I’m not a gun control advocate, but carrying a lethal security blanket makes you, and the world around you, less safe. Especially considering your comments that you don’t even venture into dangerous urban areas. It’s like that nuclear scientist in Idaho whose toddler found her gun and shot her to death- there was really no need for that woman to be carrying a gun in the first place. Her death was completely and totally meaningless. She died because an irrational fear of the world around her had her packing heat.

    Karen-

“The reason why the lady was videotaping the other car, was because she said on camera to the little girl that the car almost slammed into her from behind, because she wasn’t going fast enough for her taste in a 35 mph zone. ”

Even if true, that isn’t a good reason for following a stranger around and knowingly provoking them. That crazy lady could have just as well gotten out of her car and started shooting at the lady that was not only filming, but also tailgating her in the rain.

“Then she swerved in front of her, and kept slamming on her brakes.”

Yes, she was brake checking her, which people sometimes do to others that are tailgating them. Not only were her actions rude and confrontational, she was driving dangerously, and she should have exercised better judgment with a child in the car. She put that child in harms way because she was enraged at another driver.

“Am I right that it is not against the law to videotape while driving if you are in the middle of being victimized by a crime?”

That’s nonsense. She wasn’t “in the middle of being victimized”- she was in the middle of victimizing another. If the woman passed her in an unsafe manner, she could have reported it to the police and went on her merry way. She didn’t do that- she was stalking the woman, tailgating her in the rain and filming her in an attempt to provoke her. Well, congratulations to her, she got what she wanted.

    Happypappies-

“Are you coming around here provoking people”

If so, it’s only because my opinions oppose theirs, and my opinions are generally sensible, like in this instance.

    1. Anarchist 2.0

I gave you a long and fair argument about 2 weeks ago which you ignored regarding Charles Finney and his Evangelical Morality.

This tells me you are someones sock puppet on here undoubtedly up to stir up hate and dissent.

What a ridiculous comment you just made to all of us.

I am going to ignore it. And I don’t ignore anyone.

      I find you intolerable.

  7. Anarchist has a point. What was the lady with the camera thinking. She put the child in danger with her camera rage.

Some of you shouldn’t take others commnets so personal everyone has a right to post whether you agree with it or no.

  8. Paul – she didn’t say. I assumed that the other driver became enraged when she slowed down for a 35 mph zone. The speed limit was probably higher before and after a business district.

  9. Nick – she is clearly innocent. Nancy Grace thinks she is guilty so she cannot be guilty. 😉

  10. “As one person very correctly mentioned what happened before the women inside the car pressed the record button but I guess a hapless old women accompanied with her grand child wouldn’t attempt any thing dangerous or assert herself much.”

There is no excuse for road rage. No “she started it” so I kept trying to make her crash into me by slamming on my brakes repeatedly.

Cars can be a lethal weapon. We do not use them to dominate, punish, or fight with other drivers.

  11. The reason why the lady was videotaping the other car, was because she said on camera to the little girl that the car almost slammed into her from behind, because she wasn’t going fast enough for her taste in a 35 mph zone. Then she swerved in front of her, and kept slamming on her brakes. It looked like she was trying to cause a rear end collision. The woman wanted proof if anything happened, so it wouldn’t be her word against another’s.

She should have kept her window rolled up, because the driver was acting irrationally. But I doubt she thought a woman was a physical threat.

  12. BTW…when I said “don’t visit here” I meant Detroit, or any other urban setting where foolish audacity usually ends in tragedy.

  13. Anarchist 2.0 said …

It’s unfortunate that the crazy lady didn’t knock her ass out before she got her window rolled up.

I’m guessing you are young and immortal. That said, I suspect you are “trolling” for adverse comment. Please don’t visit here, because you will not survive it with that attitude. Me, I do not have a death wish, so I’ll stay in my car and work my way around idiots. Seriously, I am always armed, but I’d never draw and shoot at an idiot like that enraged lady, none-the-less I’d be irritated she took those chances. She was risking more than her life, but mine for her actions…when you react to fools your life just may be ruined too. It can easily become a lethal choice in a harsh urban environment. YMMV….

    1. Anarchist 2.0

Are you coming around here provoking people to see if they pay attention to your particular brand intellectual high brow trolling? If you are you are wasting your time because people here are sincerely wanting to learn and no one thinks they are better than the other

  14. There was no reason for the Philips to become aggressive, this has weakened her position before the law. As one person very correctly mentioned what happened before the women inside the car pressed the record button but I guess a hapless old women accompanied with her grand child wouldn’t attempt any thing dangerous or assert herself much.

  15. the lady with the camera is a slimebag. She followed a stranger around videotaping them, knowing that she was provoking them, and she did it with a child in the car. It’s unfortunate that the crazy lady didn’t knock her ass out before she got her window rolled up.

  16. I see a bright and promising future for Philips in the prison system.

Her character is her fate. She likely transitions from one adrenaline rage to another, until she’ll end up in jail, fired, or otherwise ruined her life.

It just broke my heart to hear the little girl cry.
