Choose Life, Live Left? Study Finds That Liberals Outlive Conservatives

President_Barack_ObamaGeorge-W-Bush_jpegFor conservatives, it must sound like “better red than dead” all over again. A new study in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health suggests that liberals live longer than conservatives in the United States. The researchers looked at more than 32,000 adults and tracked them over 15 years. The result was surprising: conservatives seemed to be expiring faster than their counterparts on the left. However, conservatives claimed to be happier than their counterparts in life.

It has been reported that Hillary Clinton has been working on a new campaign theme. Perhaps they should consider a “Vote Hillary Or Die” campaign.

Roman Pabayo, a community health researcher at the University of Nevada said that the group relied on more concrete data like actual death records than did prior studies. They also eliminated other factors by comparing conservatives and liberals of similar age, sex, and socioeconomic status. Notably, when divided simply between parties, Democratic and Republican party members died at the same rate, but when compared on ideological grounds, conservatives bit the dust first on average.

Subu V. Subramanian, a professor of population health and geography at Harvard was critical of the findings. His study relied on self-reporting and found that Republicans reported better health and they were 15% less likely to smoke. He also found that Republicans and conservatives were benefitted by being more religious and “more tied into social networks and organizations.”

It may still be too early for some conservatives to embrace wage equity and global warming. The difference in death rates is described by Subramanian as “slight” in the new study.

  1. I do not think “all blacks want to sit home and collect checks.” I socialize w/ many black people and NONE of them fit that stereotype. I have a long history of defending hard working, law abiding, black people as well as calling out the thugs and no accounts. That’s what hard working black people do as well, if you were ever to socialize w/ them! And, I’m well aware there are many fraudulent white people scamming for disability checks. I have caught thousands of them on videotape. Many are fat, white, alcoholic cheeseheads. I have videotaped lazy scammers of all races, but mostly fat cheeseheads the last 30 years or so.

  2. pointed out that the states that got the most per capita in federal dollars were more likely to vote for Republicans.

Again with the flawed use of statistics and the apparent inability to understand math. Also the inability to define what ARE those federal dollars. Social Security? Medicaid (welfare)?. Forestry dollars for lands owned BY the Federal Government and not under the control of the States. BLM? US Military? Federal Transportation dollars for interstate highways?

Per capita.= average per person. If a small population state receives the same amount of welfare benefits as a large population state and then you divide the amount among the total people in the state…..OF COURSE the per capita figure will be higher for the small population.

If you include federal money for USFS and other government agencies in states that are almost completely owned by the Federal Government, which includes most of the rural, western, low population states……OF COURSE the per capita figure will be higher for the small population.

States with larger military establishments and low populations will OF COURSE show a higher per capita spending. Even though the people living in the state in general have not actually received the money.

    This is MATH, people.

When Liberals point out the spending, they are actually referring to total spending not simply welfare or entitlement spending. This means things like roads and other infrastructure, bankrolling child support services and departments along with other initiatives and Federal money matches. Educational grants and spending. Military bases and posts

Until you know WHAT the data set you are spouting consists of, how the data has been compiled and how the study has been done; just merely spouting a talking point is the same as being an unthinking parrot.

  3. Rejecting out of hand, sources that are not exclusively conservative, doesn’t make the commenter look serious. It’s sadly just epistemic closure again.

    1. Inga – when the source is a flaming liberal, you better be very very careful with the conclusions they come to.

  4. And Nick you just proclaimed your independent views..

And there you conservatives go again. Fear of blacks and reparations because all blacks want to sit home and collect checks from the government, and fear of the infirm collecting disability payments because everyone on disability is scamming the system. There goes that black and white, GWB, you are either for us or against us thinking. No middle ground can be occupied…..

As the study noted above about conservatives: ‘easily victimized, easily offended, indecisive, fearful, rigid, inhibited, relatively over-controlled and vulnerable’.

Thanks Nick and Chip for proving that the study isn’t flawed….

  5. LOL! Criticizing opinions is what a blog is supposed to be. The echo chamber is in your other blog. This is amazing. We have many liberals here, not just the old nasty ones who ran this blog previously and come back once in awhile like alumni, trying to relive the past.

  6. Not cranky…just getting a kick out of the echo chamber here hating on anyone who disagrees with them. Can’t have an intelligent, in-depth discussion on issues of import. Got to criticize and ridicule those with different opinions. So juvenile. I guess that’s what floats the echo chamber’s boat.

  7. Chip, The only person on the left w/ any substance currently on this thread is Isaac. But, he can go off the rails @ any moment. As long as he doesn’t start ranting about Bush, he is usually reasonable. Otherwise, I would humbly suggest you avoid engaging. And, you see we have a parrot this morning as well. LOL!

  8. My specialty is providing information instead of spouting misinformation and right-wing ideology.

Something that’s clearly not your specialty is reading comprehension. You yourself posted this quote (however clumsily formatted):

There are serious economists who study the difference between what our states pay in taxes and how much they get in return from the U.S. government. These people generally don’t draw political, let alone moral, judgments from these numbers.

    I’m under no such constraint.

If you wish, I’ll explain Slate’s fallacy to you. But since it would be “serious”, I doubt that it would affect your beliefs.

  9. Reparation checks along w/ all the new SS Disability checks must be direct deposit. So please submit banking information and your reparation check will be direct deposited. And, I love “Liberal Privilege.” PERFECT!

  10. From BloombergBusiness:

    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2012-09-19/blame-fdr-and-lbj-for-moocher-paradox-in-red-states

    Excerpt:
Sept. 20 (Bloomberg) — No sooner did Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney revive the Moocher Myth than his critics jumped in with evidence to challenge it.

The Moocher Myth is this: People who vote Republican are successful, responsible strivers who pay taxes and keep the U.S. government afloat, while people who vote for Democrats are irresponsible moochers living off government programs. In Romney’s phrase, they are the 47 percent “who are dependent on government, who believe they are victims.” Reporter Mike Barnicle was criticized for saying something similar after the 2000 presidential election, claiming that the blue states on the map that voted for Al Gore were the “sense of entitlement” states.

But research then and now has pointed out that the states that got the most per capita in federal dollars were more likely to vote for Republicans.

    1. Elaine – it really depends on what they were getting the money for. There is so much federal money flowing that it is hard to tell. In this case it appears Republican Senators and Representatives were best at getting more money for their districts than Democratic ones.

  11. Don’t be silly, Lloyd. I think it’s great to have such clear evidence of Liberal Privilege.

    Where’s my reparations check?

  12. You can always tell when she’s not getting many comments on vapid posts elsewhere. Comes over here cranky.

  13. independent of politics comes along and all you can come up with is vitriol.

Not vitrol at all. I pointed out in my first comment that the study is garbage

“Different people were included each year, so the survey is not a panel design.

This makes the survey garbage. You can’t base a trend with different (new) research subjects each year. Statistically, this is trash.

The study itself even makes this disclosure, buried somewhere in the small print. But …..because Gruber is correct…..people only hear what they want to hear and pounce on the results that fit into their bias.

Either you adhere to the correct use of science and statistical analysis, or you adulterate and use false, misleading studies to get the results that you want.

As a Conservative and an analytical person , I lean towards the first. Science and correct data. This particular study does not prove what people would like to think that it does because it is using flawed data.
