Marquette University Center Director Dumped After Creation of Mural to Assata Shakur

shakur3Marquette University has apparently dumped Susannah Bartlow, the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center director after the center celebrated the completion of a mural featuring convicted Assata Shakur who was convicted of an execution style killing of a New Jersey trooper in 1973. The mural was joint project of the Center and the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

AssatamugshotWernerfoersterIt is astonishing that a mural would be completed without someone making a minimal inquiry as Shakur’s identity as a cop killer and a terrorist. Born JoAnne Deborah Byron, Assata Olugbala Shakur was a member of the former Black Panther Party and Black Liberation Army with a long criminal record. In May 1973, she was involved in a shootout on the New Jersey Turnpike and accused of killing New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster and wounding Trooper James Harper. She was indicted in relation to six other incidents including murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, bank robbery, and kidnapping. In 1979, she escaped and fled to Cuba. The FBI has classified her as a domestic terrorist and offered a $1 million reward for assistance in her capture. Her history is not hard to find obviously on dozens of websites.

Given that history, it is unbelievable that Bartlow and Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority would select her as the inspiring figure for the university. The controversy was triggered by a blog critique by associate professor of political science John McAdams.

Following the disclosure, the university announced that “Susannah Bartlow is no longer an employee with Marquette University.” The sorority’s international communications chairman Leona Dotson said that “[u]nfortunately Ms. Shakur’s entire history and background was not fully researched. If that process had occurred, she would not have been featured in the mural.”

It is a remarkable turnaround for university. The Center released a tweet on March 24th proclaiming “TADA, our mural is finished! In commemoration of the courageous, Assata Shakur.” I could think of many things to call Shakur many things but “courageous” is not one of them.

3cafaffAccording to her bio, Bartlow is a graduate of the University of Buffalo with past association with Dickinson College, State University of New York at Buffalo, UB Institute for Research and Education on Women and Gender.

The two quotes selected were:

“No one is going to give you the education you need to overthrow them. Nobody is going to teach you your true history, teach you your true heroes if they know that that knowledge will help set you free.

Before going back to college, I knew I didn’t want to be an intellectual, spending my life in books and libraries without knowing what the hell is going on in the streets. Theory without practice is just as incomplete as practice without history. The two have to go together.”

  1. HIJACKED THREAD!! LOL. Take this thread ANYWHERE but Marquette.

  2. Max,
While Josh Duggar was molesting his sisters, Jim Bob and Michelle were oblivious. Yet they were so concerned that transgender men would molest women in the ladies’ room. All the scary rhetoric about LGBT yet Josh Duggar and his parents knew all along what he had done. They shouldn’t have set themselves up as America’s Best Christian Family, they are frauds. Also the state trooper who gave Josh a strong “talking to” after the molestations came to light, is now sitting in prison for child pornograghy. How closely can parents with 19 children watch their children? Did they trust this state trooper because he was a “Christian”? Then after the molestations they sent their son to go live with some other man, not a therapist, as stated, but a building contractor. Good lord.

    1. Inga – you are trolling or thread jacking with your stuff on the Duggars.

  3. p.s.
Waiting for Turley to cover the poor Duggars… Josh is such a victim.
God blessed him… his victims, er sisters?
    They don’t matter, either.

    They’re bikers… not thugs.
    Mostly white… not black.
    Ergo… white lives don’t matter.

er… difficult for propaganda media to unspin the memes.

  5. Come on, Pogo, I thought you braver than that! Answer the dang question!
A fundamentalist is a fundamentalist, whether Isis, Likud or Pogo! 🙂

  6. The rest of us here have one too, we call it the NSBS detector.

  7. I have a BS detector that people pay good money for. It was going off like a five alarm fire reading this thread.

  8. Pogo, it appears that you are simply a very intolerant person. Even those who worship a Christian God differently than you, you seem to have a problem with. Sorry Pogo, that God didn’t create a whole planet full of little furry possums, just like you.

  9. Pogo,
SO WHAT? If this House of Worship, the Presbyterian Church is a good fit for some Christians, what do you have against them worshipping how they see fit? Do you know anyone or anyone’s relative that goes to a Presbyterian Church? Do you think they are good people?

  10. “The number of congregations belonging to Presbyterian Church (USA) fell below the 10,000 mark during 2014 (9,829 congregations) …a decline from the 10,038 congregations it had in 2013.
110 congregations were listed as dissolved and another 101 were dismissed to other denominations. In contrast, in 2014 PCUSA had 15 new congregations organized.

Total membership at the end of 2014 was 1,667,767. That’s compared to 1,760,200 at the end of 2013 and 1,849,496 at the end of 2012.
According to the PCUSA’s General Assembly Mission Council, in 2000 the denomination had more than 2.5 million members, or nearly one million more people than in 2014.

One factor in the decline has been the theological direction of PCUSA, as votes at the General Assembly level regarding the acceptance of homosexuality have led many congregations to seek dismissal.”

Losing members at that rate, well, you do the math.

  11. There is a malignancy in the religious right movement. You’ve seen it at work here in Pogo’s words. He disses the Presbyterian church but isn’t brave enough to say exactly why.

  12. As long as there are only two worshipers, there is a church. So WHAT if it’s “disappearing” ? What does that have to do with the Presbyterian faith?

  13. And what is the truth about the Presbyterians, be brave now Pogo, you almost said it and then back peddled.

  14. It didn’t take much to prove that you Pogo are one of the most biased people on this blog.

  15. ” he denies dissing Presbyterians.

Heh. I encourage you to persist in your methods.

I’ll shut off the lights when you’re done.
