Police Issue Arrest Warrant in Gruesome Murder Of D.C. Family After Linking Suspect Through Leftover Pizza Crusts

image0071432175830Police have identified and have an arrest warrant for the man suspected in the gruesome murder of a family and their housekeeper in Washington, D.C. Police are seeking Daron Dylon Wint, 34, in the murder of Savvas Savopoulos, 46, his wife Amy Savopoulos, 47, their 10-year-old son, Philip, and housekeeper Veralicia Figueroa, 57 in the family’s Northwest Washington home. What is most striking about the story is that the lead came from the crust of a pizza ordered to the house during the family’s long ordeal in captivity before they were beaten to death. The DNA reportedly matched Wint who have a long criminal history.

The family was held overnight on May 13th. It was disclosed this week that Savvas Savopoulos’s personal assistant dropped off a package containing $40,000 in cash at the home — money that was going to be used to start a new a martial arts business. The four were brutally murdered and the house set on fire. Missing was the money and a blue Porsche owned by the family. The car was later torched in a church parking lot in Prince George’s County.

Savvas Savopoulos was the president and chief executive of American Iron Works, which supplies metal to large building projects across the region. The couple has two teenage daughters away in boarding school.

Police report a flurry of calls from the husband to business associates that night as well to a housekeeper telling her not to come in. The money for the pizza was left outside the door of the house for the delivery man.

Even in a city accustomed to violent crime, this case has been chilling for the city and surrounding areas.

7837926_GA neighbor told media that he recognized Wint shortly after the homicide as someone who was “hanging out” on the front porch. Wint has a long criminal history that includes domestic violence, burglary and assault.

The DNA link on the pizza shows how far forensics have come in such crime scenes. It also shows that, even after torching a house and a car, such evidence can survive.

Authorities offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to his arrest and conviction, and asked that anyone with information about the case call police at 202-727-9099.

  1. I was under the impression that Savopoulos raised the money to pay off the attacker/extortionist

    @Simms

Ah…I didn’t hear that aspect of the crime. Thank you. It would have been good if the people delivering the money had found it suspicious and called the police.

  2. If Savopoulos had tackled the guy, yes, he probably would have been shot or stabbed, but it would have created an opening for his wife, son and the maid to run out and get help.

Just because they only found one DNA source doesn’t mean he was alone.

  3. Simms: it’s also sad that Savopoulos thought he could pay the guy and he would just leave. Perhaps fear or wishful thinking, but it’s kind of delusional to think that he was going to leave the victims alive so that they could I.D. him. It reminds me of that book I read in high school, “In Cold Blood.” The family just meekly got slaughtered. If Savopoulos had tackled the guy, yes, he probably would have been shot or stabbed, but it would have created an opening for his wife, son and the maid to run out and get help. Of course, none of us know what we would do under similar circumstances. Personally, I would rather take my chances and try to escape than just let someone kill me without one hell of a fight.

  4. bam bam and Dust Bunny Queen,

I was under the impression that Savopoulos raised the money to pay off the attacker/extortionist. It was reported that there were calls to banks and accountants on the two days of the attacks. The money may never have been intended for a business transaction. Too bad none of the people involved in the calls thought it odd enough to call the police.

  5. Never thought the day would come when I’d ever praise the chewey, doughy and often way-too-thick crust on Domino’s pizza, but the suspect’s distaste for that discarded cardboard crust may have just nailed the murderer in this gruesome case.

  6. Just read that the suspect was arrested for these horrible crimes.

  7. PCS, the question was rhetorical. The Christian/Newsome murders were absolutely sickening. And they got absolutely no publicity. The Indoctrination TV Networks decided against the truth. How about that? Americans couldn’t handle the truth. The collectivist networks decided these heinous killings didn’t fit their agenda and narrative. It was an historic American journalistic failure. Corruption/manipulation at its finest. Charles Manson and his girls were on the “news” 24/7. I didn’t intend to redirect the thread, just provide some perspective.

  8. D.C. is like Detroit and South Central L.A. San Bernardino is “nasty” my friends…Sepulveda and Lugo streets…dens of evil…with perps in jheri curl, just waiting to do a number on “whitey”…they need those “swisher sweets”, to compliment the 40 of Olde English 800…true dat!

  9. This scumbag Wint is the poster child for “capital punishment”…he deserved “ol-sparky”…nice and slow, with a nice prolonged dose of AMPS, to really drive the point home to this evildoer…shocking, positively shocking!

  10. Why did this D.C. murder get the publicity?

“Gruesome Murder That No One Heard About”

Murders of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom

Channon Gail Christian, 21, and Hugh Christopher Newsom, Jr., 23, were a couple from Knoxville, Tennessee. They were raped, tortured, and murdered after being kidnapped the evening of January 6, 2007 when Christian’s vehicle was carjacked.[1][2] Five people were arrested and charged in the case. The grand jury indicted four of the suspects on counts of capital murder, robbery, kidnapping, rape, and theft, while a fifth was indicted at the federal level.

Christian and Newsom were leaving an apartment together to go to a friend’s party when they were abducted from the apartment complex parking lot.

Christian’s parents found her abandoned Toyota 4-Runner two blocks away from the Chipman Street house the following Monday with the help of her mobile phone provider. An envelope recovered from the vehicle yielded fingerprint evidence that led police to Lemaricus Davidson at 2316 Chipman Street. When police went to the address on Tuesday, January 9, they found the house unoccupied and Channon’s body in a bin in the kitchen.

According to the testimony of the Knox County Acting Medical Examiner Dr. Darinka Mileusnic-Polchan at the subsequent trial of Eric Boyd, Newsom was sodomized with an object and then raped by an individual. When his body was discovered near a set of nearby railroad tracks, it was found that he had been bound, blindfolded, gagged, and stripped naked from the waist down. He had been shot in the back of the head, neck, and back and his body had been set on fire.

According to the testimony of the medical examiner, Channon’s death came after hours of torture, having suffered injuries to her vagina, anus, and mouth as a result of repeated sexual assaults. It was also reported that her body was scrubbed with bleach which was also poured down her throat, in an attempt by her attackers to remove DNA evidence, while Channon was still alive. She was then bound with curtains and strips of bedding, her face covered with a trash bag and her body stashed within five large trash bags, before being placed inside a residential waste disposal unit and covered with sheets. The medical examiner said there was evidence that Channon slowly suffocated to death.

    1. forgotwhoiam – I think JT picked this one because of the way they found the DNA on the pizza. Now those of us who are criminally minded are going to have to find out if their are pizzas that are more or less susceptible to being tested for DNA.

  11. If he is convicted and gets the death penalty then consider the manner of inflicting death. Needle in the arm; firing squad with Governor taking the lead shot; electric chair; gas chamber; burned to death in a crematorium; drowned in his own puke; dropped out of a plane over Saudi Arabia; enema bomb. Please vote your choice if you favor the death penalty.

  12. OT Grundy Update:

In addition to bullying and taunting rape victims online racist Boston University professor Saida Grundy was convicted of a crime. She set up an account requesting NSA sex on an adult hookup site using a romantic rival’s name and picture.

BU sure found themselves a winner.

  13. This also illustrates why the primary purpose of prison is to protect the public, punish the guilty, and act as a deterrent to those bright enough to get the idea. It is not group therapy or free rehab.
