Membership of the United Nations’ Human Rights Council (HRC) has always been a rogue’s gallery of some of the world’s most oppressive nations trying to obstruct its work or artificially rehabilitate their images. Now to add insult to countless human rights injuries, Saudi Arabia wants to head the HRC. That’s right. The country that will not allow any other religion to build a simple church or place of worship in the Kingdom. The country that executes people for apostasy for simply praying to the God of their choice. The country that imprisons and flogs women for driving, adultery, or people accused of sorcery. The country that is the greatest exporter of the extreme Sharia values that are stripping away rights in various countries. The country that cuts off the hands of thieves. The country that denies free speech and executes people in intersections for things like drug dealing. That country.
As the Kingdom seeks new executioners to meet the high demand for amputations and executions, it is seeking the top position on the HRC to lead the world on human rights.
U.N. Watch has called the effort “the final nail in the coffin for the credibility” of the HRC. Countries like Iran, China, and others have turned the HRC into a joke in recent years.
The question will be whether the Obama Administration will do what prior administrations have failed to do: stand up to Saudi Arabia and move to block its influence.

Yes, I could care less most of the time. But it serves a purpose for our intelligence services by having all the jabbering wonks in one place easily accessed by various intelligence agencies. Elsewhere that would be much harder to do. I look at the UN as the herding pen for the world’s idiots, better in our backyard that dispersed. As for funding…yeah, I’d curtail that, partially or completely, where appropriate…they won’t leave…NYC is the magic kingdom for the membership.

Global temperature change observed over the last hundred years or so is well within the natural variability of the last 8,000 years, according to a new paper by a former Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change (IPCC) lead author.
Dr. Philip Lloyd, a South Africa-based physicist and climate researcher, examined ice core-based temperature data going back 8,000 years to gain perspective on the magnitude of global temperature changes over the 20th Century.
What Lloyd found was that the standard deviation of the temperature over the last 8,000 years was about 0.98 degrees Celsius– higher than the 0.85 degrees climate scientists say the world has warmed over the last century.
“This suggests that while some portion of the temperature change observed in the 20th century was probably caused by greenhouse gases, there is a strong likelihood that the major portion was due to natural variations,” Lloyd wrote in his study.

We on Planet Remulak approve this. Our position is that Planet Earth needs to be governed by the most ridgid and despotic control humans. Otherwise we cannot control Planet Earth. We on Planet Remulak want to keep the population on Planet Earth down a bit smaller than it is. Can you please have a world war and use nuclear weapons and perhaps wipe out one half of your population? It would be good for us.

We understand them and they understand us. Royalty and religious extremism doesn’t go too far in the US. Free speech and ‘reach for the top’ doesn’t go too far in Saudi Arabia. However, money talks and integrity doesn’t figure in the equation pretty much everywhere.
Culture clash times 1000! I suspect that in the eyes of the Saudi’s, they are the most humane on the planet. We do not understand them and they do not understand us.
The UN should not be headquartered in NYC. America needs to pull out now. Like our fathers should have. But wait. If my father pulled out then I wouldn’t be here.
Beyond the human rights failures discussed in your post, I suspect the United Nations would fail to earn even one star from Charity Navigator.
Just imagine what could be accomplished if the money wasted on UN programs (intended to help the world’s needy) was instead provided to the likes of Doctors Without Borders, which utilizes nearly 90% of donations received for its intended end use.
Of course, should taxpayer money continue to be laundered through our federal bureaucracy, which itself would fail Charity Navigator scrutiny, little would actually reach the organizations in the first place.
A bloated bureaucracy unaccountable to its supporters funding a bloated bureaucracy unaccountable to its supporters … what could possibly go wrong?
It is time to end the involvement of the USA within the UN. Withdraw from the UN. The UN must be defanged.

Obama is a lame duck and will do nothing. Conspiracy theories: US president is Barry Soetoro, citizen of Indonesia. Religion is Islam.
We can do what we have done before which is refuse to pay our dues to the UN. Or we could drop out, like Japan did from the League of Nations, and safe the money. Force them to move themselves and their building to another country.
The country does so because it’s theocratic, and with religion anything is permissible.
