Alabama Teen Arrested After Killing Mother’s Chickens To Force Her To Call His Girlfriend’s Parents To Repair Relationship

haden_smithIn one of the truly most bizarre criminal cases this year, Hayden Smith, 18, has been arrested after killing six of his mother’s chickens after demanding that she call the parents of his girlfriend to repair the relationship. I cannot imagine why the girl’s parents would not want her going out with Smith.

Police say that Smith threatened to kill a chicken every 15 minutes until his mother made the call. He then allegedly sent pictures of the dead chickens every prescribed interval. He killed six before he was arrested.

He has been charged not with animal cruelty but domestic violence third degree and criminal mischief. I presume that lack of a cruelty charge appears reflects that the chickens may be killed for food so only as they are killed in any number of humane ways.

Notably, Smith also threatened to burn his mother’s house down, kill deputies and himself. I would hope that the first step in the defense is a psychological evaluation.

I am pretty sure that he is past the telephone call stage of repairing the relationship with the girl’s parents.

    A long time ago I read the biography of Nicky Cruz. If I remember correctly, his mom used to lock him in the pigeon coop as a punishment.

    I think this kid’s defense should be Poultry Trauma Stress Disorder.

        He may have killed all six at the same time and released the pictures at intervals.

        I’d like to know if he was influenced by rebel flags or ISIS videos.

        1. pinandpuller – I have only the information that JT supplied, but I am sure he is influenced by a variety of microaggressions as well as ISIS/ISIL and the Confederate flag. And, like Ben Affleck, his forebearers were probably slave-holders.

  4. The Supreme Ct just legalized gay marriage in all states. You folks should be aware of the HumpinDog law suit in progress which will seek to legalize the marriage between a male dog and a female human.

    But something tells me this kid is no history scholar.

  8. Wonder if the domestic violence third degree is the killing of the chickens. His defense could be the slow response of the PD, 6 chickens worth.

  9. I am just surprised that Mom let him kill 6 of the chickens. I am unclear about whether she called the police and it took them 6 chickens to come or it took Mom a few chickens before she made the call to the police.

    I agree with JT. Call to the gf was going nowhere.

  10. Hey, killing chickens for revenge in Alabama is serious business and not as unusual as you would think. I lived on Sand Mountain in Alabama for ten years and everybody loves their chickens. Ours, like all of our neighbors, ran free during the day. You let them out of the henhouse in the morning, they work their way around the yard through out the course of the day scratching up grasshoppers and June-bugs. I knew it was time to start dinner when I noticed the chickens on the north side of the house (always three o clock). They stay together and their route around the unfenced yard never varied. As to their deaths, they were often mauled by a stray dog come up into the yard, or a hawk overhead, one time a fox got into the henhouse and it looked like Slaughterhouse 5. The chickens all had names and to this day my 32 year old daughter Melinda mourns Rosemary, a Banty hen she sometimes sneaked into her bed at night. Yup, domestic violence was the right charge.

  11. vad, JT is an animal activist. If there is an animal killed, it is post worthy in his mind. I’m certain he eats chicken. But only those that die by natural cause.

  12. Correction: upon-re-reading I realized that he was charged exactly like I thought he should be, rather than for animal cruelty.

  13. I can understand if he was charged with something along the lines of destructing mother’s property, plus maybe threats as such.. But animal cruelty? Aren’t chicken supposed to be eventually killed by their owner, for example when she feels like making a soup? What about chicken farms?
