While this may be just another “he said, she said” situation, a document released at the University of Tennessee suggests that it may be actually a “ze said, xe said” situation. Donna Braquet the director of the university’s Pride Center is asking faculty and students to drop using “he” and “she” in favor of using “correct pronouns” for particular students like ze, hir, zir, xe, xem and xyr to reflect a broader array of gender identifications. We recently discussed how the University of California has adopted six different gender categories for students. Braquet is now suggesting that faculty adopt the new array of pronouns (“dozens of gender-neutral pronouns”) and use whatever the student feels is appropriate.
Donna Braquet is associate professor and biology librarian with University Libraries. In fairness to Braquet, she is trying to have a dialogue about how to respond to the growing adoption of different gender identifications and fulfilling her role in working to make the university a more accommodating place. In that sense, I am not sure it is accurate to say that this is university policy, at least not yet.
Braquet insists that this is part of “making our campus welcoming and inclusive for all.” However, this could add a considerable burden for faculty, particularly in large classes. Bracket suggests “[i]nstead of calling roll, ask everyone to provide their name and pronouns . . . [so that] you are not singling out transgender or non-binary students.” She suggests “You can always politely ask,” she wrote. “’Oh, nice to meet you (insert name). What pronouns should I use?’”
Braquet adds:
“We should not assume someone’s gender by their appearance, nor by what is listed on a roster or in student information systems . . . Transgender people and people who do not identify within the gender binary may use a different name than their legal name and pronouns of their gender identity, rather than the pronouns of the sex they were assigned at birth.”
She admits that this can seem odd but she says that that is simply because it is new. As an academic, this would be a pretty daunting task for keeping track of so many options. I have a class of around 130 students. More importantly, I am still behind the learning curve on what terms like “xyr” mean, though Braquet insists that this is just part of learning the new lingo for a new age.
What do you think?
Transgender people and people who do not identify within the gender binary may use a different name than their legal name? Really? The rest of the world must accommodate the gender bending games that people play, yet those same people can’t be required to take some personal responsibility by putting forth the time and effort to legally change their names? Seems like the onus is now placed on others–not on those with gender identity issues–to take some action.
Really interesting post

Besides the fact that the country is now occupied by elites that are crazier than bat-$hit but it’s more upsetting to see people post and post and post online anonymously rather than speaking up and making noise or civil disobedience, this is crazy to even allow it and it shouldn’t have even gotten this far if the brakes were put on much earlier. God sakes, a small country like Iceland stood up to the bankers and their elected leaders and said they weren’t taking on any more debt-they had some of their Parliament step down and jailed the bankers. A country of a little over 300,000 people and we have last count in 2014 a population of 319 million. What’s wrong with that picture?
bill pappas – it is a little harder to herd 319,000,000 cats than 300,000.
Bam, Living in the San Francisco of lesbians[Madison, I have gotten to know many lesbians. There are two distinct type. There are the man haters like this woman. And, there are the woman lovers. I like the latter. They don’t abide this horse manure. These man hating lesbians hate men but hate themselves even more. And, they take all that anger out on the world. They are profoundly unhappy, negative people.
LOL! We know lesbians have very high BMI’s.
She’s asking faculty and students to drop HE and SHE? Did anyone ever ask her to drop the doughnuts?
Soon we will be unable to communicate with each other.

I wish folks would take a linguistics class. Grammatical gender and the gender of entities in the world often conflict (blaring example: in Latin, “penis” is feminine and “cunnus” if masculine). It is simply silly and superstitious and ignorant to worry about the impact, effect, or openness conveyed by the way personal pronouns are marked in English or any other language.
Thank you for confirmation that lock-step, consensus science and politically-correct values are the result of Stalin’s unreported victories at Konan, Korea in Aug-Sept 1945.

Good grief, I’m gonna have to change my name to Pragmatic Liberaltarian, But Kinda Conservative on Some Things.
Oh my god! I have written it out for a reason. What on earth is wrong with people.
These are all liberal Democrats on campuses trying to out PC one another. This PC is so pernicious it has helped create a buffoonish demagogue in Trump. Everyone who has commented here so far agrees w/ Trump that PC is out of control.
Progressives/liberals/socialists do not seem to realize it, but this is just the sort of thing that gets Trump elected. 20.000 voters more are behind Trump because of this woman.
This is not doing the cause any good.
Is Ms. Braquet as stupid as she seems or is this just a cry for attention?
Couple of problems that I see. 1) I cannot pronounce them so they violate my rights under the ADA 2) Schools like ASU have lecture classes with 450 students in them. They take roll electronically. Nobody is going to stop to ask for pronouns. 3) My pronoun is Sir.
This just makes it tougher not to be cynical and demean those that fall between he and she. The worst thing about gays are the screamers. When they settle down there is nothing to complain about. The old pendulum swinging the other way.
Seems to me that “he or she” has already been dropped in favor of “they” or “their”. I cringe every time I see it, but it is becoming more and more common, even in official documents. So if you’re not willing to write, “An employee should ask his or her manager….”, and instead opt for, “An employee should ask their manager….”, mangling gender and tenses, then it’s highly unlikely that anyone will be adding additional genders or forms of address.
Eh, zilly.
I hope North and South Carolina Universities do not follow this “INSANE” example. Soon we will not be allowed to dress our children as girls and boys. No wonder Trump is leading the Republican nomination for President of USA. Natalie Simpson
