We previously wrote HERE and HERE of the arrest, conviction, and sentencing several Al-Jazeera reporters for the dubious accusation of aiding the Muslim Brotherhood through their coverage of the “civil war” in Egypt.
Now in its latest retrial, the Court sentenced Peter Greste, Mohammed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed to three years imprisonment for operating without a press license and broadcasting material harmful to the state. An international outcry likely will follow.
Judge Hassan Farid declared the defendants “are not journalists and not members of the press syndicate” and claimed they broadcast with unlicensed equipment. Fortunately, Australian Peter Greste had been deported months earlier yet was nevertheless convicted and sentenced in absentia. In the original trial they were sentenced to ten years imprisonment.
Messrs. Fahmy and Mohamed were retaken into custody after the verdict, having been released in February after serving a year in detention.

Max, we’ve been hearing, even on this blog’s comments sections, what sounds like the wet dreams of revolutionaries. I sometimes wonder if these advocates of a new revolution here in this country think that the “other side” would just lay down and accept such fascism. To openly call for the killing of what he calls “The fifth column”, here on our own soil, simply chilling knowing he is teaching at West Point. Maybe he doesn’t want to kill them, maybe he just wants to put them in a gulag.
Inga – first, I am curious to know how you know how a wet dream sounds? Second, fifth columnists are always the enemy and by the rules of the Geneva Convention can be shot on the spot.
Paul, firstly it’s an expression. Secondly I didn’t use it with a sexual connotation in mind. Thirdly, perhaps you need to review your high school biology course. We don’t excecute people for political rhetoric or teachings on American soil, or do we?
I think we have some presidential findings on the books that allow us to kill anyone we want on US soil. You can thank Obama for that.
So Paul, if what you assert is true, you agree that the U.S. should target and assassinate or arrest law professors, law students and blow up law schools,on American soil? Do you know what you are advocating?

The Qatari parent company, Al-Jazeera is a huge conglomerate with many subsidiaries — think of the US TV networks like NBC and CBS. Al-Jazeera failed to “quarantine” the Al-Jazeera English reporters work, as the reporters had requested, but instead allowed it to be used by two of their subsidiaries, Al-Jazeera Arabic and a local TV station in Egypt. Those subsidiaries support the Brotherhood, and they edited the reporters’ work, using it for pro-Brotherhood propaganda. A portion of the blame for what happened to the reporters belongs to Al-Jazeera.

He proposes targeting “foreign” lawyers and students. However I fear, as the Obama Administration already proved, American citizens are legal targets should they travel over seas. And you don’t have to be 16, to meet your maker…

Do these warmongers not care what cost in lives and money it would present to the U.S. itself? It’s clear they don’t care about the innocent lives of those who live in the target countries. I’m wondering, does he advocate attacking American law professors here on our own soil? Or does he think we should target (with what, drones?) law professors and law schools in the Mideast? And this lunatic teaches our prospective military officers?

Of course it’s never supporting the oppression of human Rights and Freedoms when America, the leader of the Free World, supports the suppression of human Rights.

In the U.S. some cop would’ve jumped on the hood of his car and shot him dead. The Canadian cops showed a tremendous amount of restraint. My Canadian relatives have told me several times they’re happy that branch of the family emigrated to Canada instead of the U.S. It used to annoy me to no end.
Well since someone brought up Canada, American police might take note. No shots fired, some property damage. Firstly the RCMP is probably less tense around these events as there is a very strong chance the nutcase involved is not packing. Secondly, there is a far higher level of training on average in the RCMP than in most US police forces, in particular the ones that ‘shoot first and ask questions later’. It is well established that Americans, as represented and run by the special interest pro gun/anti regulation groups consider the problem unavoidable and the damage as acceptably collateral. The fact of the matter is that the problem took decades to fester to this degree of sickness and no one approach will get rid of this open sore.
From the center to the right the solution is to arm up. From the center to the left the solution is to increase regulations, restrictions, and control in general. America has been arming up for the last few decades and the results are in. America has not tried the more common sense approach of approaching this multi faceted problem from many different but applicable perspectives.

I realize that it is sacrilege to offer advice to America unless you were born here but I don’t believe in gods of any sort other than as a source of anthropological interest and perhaps study. I also realize that some will accuse me of hijacking this blog but like I said, some one brought it up.
“In an intense scene that played out Saturday morning, Salt Spring RCMP stood with weapons drawn as the driver of a stolen truck repeatedly rammed police vehicles before speeding off and flipping into a ditch.
The driver was found inside the overturned vehicle, sitting upright on the ceiling, armed with an axe and trying to set the vehicle on fire with a lighter.
“Nobody could have anticipated how bizarre and volatile this incident would have unfolded,” RCMP Cpl. Darren Lagan said Saturday. “It highlights the unpredictable nature of police work and the real risks our officers face.”
The chaotic scene unfolded just after midnight an Upper Ganges Road, when the driver attempted to avoid an impaired-driving checkpoint, nearly striking an officer on foot, police said.
A video posted to Facebook by Kyle Matheson shows officers yelling at the driver to get out of the truck.
The officers break the driver’s side window and open the door, but the man slams it shut. He then drives forward and backward, pushing the police vehicle in front of him several metres and reversing onto the hood of the cruiser behind him. The two police vehicles were heavily damaged.
After several hits, the driver manoeuvres the truck out of the checkpoint area and drives away.
RCMP said a police vehicle followed the vehicle northbound on Upper Ganges Road, locating it a short distance away, upside-down in the ditch.
“An on-scene firefighter familiar with the suspect was successful in persuading him to surrender the axe, but the man continued to physically resist attempts by first responders to assist him,” RCMP said in a statement.
After several hours, the suspect was forced from the vehicle and apprehended under the Mental Health Act, Lagan said.
His physical injuries are unknown, but are believed to be minor. He was taken to hospital for medical assessment.
A preliminary investigation has determined that the truck had been stolen.
An officer seated in one of the police cars suffered neck and back injuries. He has been treated and released from medical care, and is expected to be off duty for some time.
The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been notified and is monitoring the case, pending a determination of the extent of the man’s injuries. The office investigates police-involved deaths or serious injuries.”

In these areas East of Corfu we cannot expect to have a full fledged democracy. Woodrow Wilson pledged to make the world safe for Democracy. Yet, many wars and many things have come to pass. Perhaps Woodrow was just thinking of Europe. He did segregate things from one over another such as segregating Washington DC and segregating the military. But here we are with some prosecution of some so called journalists in Egypt. At home we have some Jorge named guy who claims to be a journalist and he comes to a press conference and shouts out his theme. No questions asked.
As time goes on this PC Dog has more respect for The Donald and less for the other weenies. And by Dog I am a Liberal, Libertarian, and Fundamental Constitutional dog with no religions except for the religion of In Dog We Trust. Also the Eighth Day Dog Adventists. I will add that the three defendants were represented by Amal Clooney who is a beautiful actress, cover girl, lawyer who is married to George Clooney. She was just shown on television here in America. With a Fox like this on their side I would expect that there will be more traction in this case than is normal.
My guess is that these three “journalists” were not politically correct. Egypt is a step above a pirate territory and indeed they are no worse or better than a country like France. We need to discuss the origin of Al Jazerra or however ya spull it and whether or not it is a creature of some pirate territory operating in he Muddle East.
My guess is that they are probably working covertly for the CIA as disinformation agents, to help destabilize the government there… what ‘s new?….
