Florida Woman Arrested After Social Media Picture Showed Her Riding Endangered Sea Turtle

0927 stephanie mooreseaturtle-jpg-20150926Stephanie Marie Moore, 20, is the latest person who had been felled by a self-inflicted social media wound. Moore’s Snapchat picture riding sea turtles went viral and led to her arrest for animal cruelty this weekend in Melbourne, Florida.

Moore took her turtle ride in July. Her picture led to a torrent of complaints to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, which handled the criminal investigation. She has been the subject of an outstanding warrant.

Moore was nailed after Melbourne police officers responded to a disturbance in progress and came across Moore and discovered her active warrant.

  1. Aridog

The turtles are nesting. ‘Nuff said? There’s also this:

Because sea turtles are aquatic, they already struggle with their own weight when they come ashore to lay their eggs, Bay News 9 reported in July. Sitting on a turtle as Moore did not only limits its mobility, but can also cause damage to its ribs or sternum

  2. One question: Did she hurt the turtle? If not, what is the controversy? She touched the turtle, that we can see…but did she harm him/her? No one anywhere is more a wild life protector than me, but let’s not get crazy about this. My time is with far greater threats, in animal terms (Griz and others of similar disposition) and I’ve managed to not harm a single one. Nor have they me. If I touch a turtle am I guilty of a animal abuse? Maybe…but please let’s have some common sense in all this…I will never intentionally harm any form of life if I can help it…well maybe except spiders 🙂

  3. That ‘shoot her’ was metaphorical. A joke.

I imagine that one or more of her future bad choices will take care of it without any assistance from anyone else.

  4. The first thought that comes to mind when seeing a person with these full body tattoos and tattoo sleeves is….here is a person who makes some very very bad choices in life.

The second thought is how in the world did they pay for this. It isn’t cheap to get these tattoos and with those types of body marring ink, it isn’t likely that they have a very high paying job or even have a job AT all, in which case, WE the taxpayers are subsidizing this.

Bad choices and not likely to make any better ones in the future. Just shoot her now.

  5. In some zoos you can ride the tortorises. However, I don’t think she knew the difference. The key here is to not put any photos on Facebook.

  6. I looked up the Buck vs. Bell case from the Supeme Court in 1927. Justice Oliver Wendall Holmes was the author. Substitute the word “imbeciles” for “idiots”. I see that one of his offspring is a commenter on this blog sometimes.

  7. If I were the Judge I would order her to be sterilized if: her mother and grandmother each have tattoos. Cite: Buck v. Bell, Sterilization case from Supreme Ct in 1927, by Justice Holmes: “Three generations of idiots are enough.”

  8. She’s 20 years old and probably sexually active. Expect these genes to be propagated, soon. I suspect her reproductive fitness is, unfortunately, much greater than the poor turtle’s.

  9. From the description of the perp and how they found her one wonders if anything like a fine or other appropriate slap on the wrist would get through to her. Some sort of education might make a dent. Charging her with a criminal offense, record and all that seems to be just over the line.

  10. Another prosecutor trying to get some performance merits. Just like cops move up the ladder by getting arrests. Animal cruelty would have been serving it up for dinner? I’m sure many of you have seen the green turtle farms in the Caribbean.

What’s the prosecutors cliché; “I’ll retire when I have convictions of a million years”.

As a couple of articles have argued, it has created an us vs we mentality.

  11. Yeah, the prosecutor should offer her a deal: pork a turtle on video and have it posted on the Internet and he/she will drop the charges.

  12. I do not know if a big sea turtle would consider non consensual sex with this ugly pig but that should be a consideration of the judge when he/she sentences this hog.

  13. The tattoo says a lot. There is an old adage:
One tattoo: drunk at a carnival.
    Two tattoos: Navy!
    Three or more tattoos: INMATE!

But there is more. What is it about tattoos that now draw women? It used to be the ultimate “manly” thing to get. In the South now they are common as bras. They go hand in hand with women smokers. Military areas are more abundant with them.

  14. Looks like she wanted attention and got it. With all the attention in Florida about the need to respect turtle nesting habits, it is difficult to understand how some people do not get the message.
