In Raleigh, North Carolina, Jewel Shuping is finally happy. With the help of what was described as a “sympathetic psychologist,” Shuping, 30, fulfilled a lifelong dream in blinding herself with drain cleaner. Shuping says that she always wanted to be blind and is now overjoyed to be disabled. It is the latest example of what is called Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID) where able bodied people disable themselves. What is even more astonishing is that there is no indication of any discipline of the alleged psychologist who performed this harmful practice.
Shuping says that the tried previously to blind herself in 2006 and spent her childhood staring into the sun to try to become blind. By 18, she was walking around with dark glasses and a white cane. By 20, she was fluent in braille.
She said that she finally found a doctor who agreed to blind her by giving her numbing eye drops and then drops of drain cleaner. She recalls the painful procedure with joy as fulfilling her longtime dream. A hospital tried against her will to save her eyes but they were unsuccessful. Indeed, she said that she was enraged when she woke and could see the television but soon her eyes failed entirely.
Shuping is now studying for a degree in education and says that she wants to help fellow blind people. Her only regret is that she wishes that she could have seen her father’s face again and now he has died. That could raise a challenging question of the suitability of a person for a teaching position (if she seeks one) after engaging in self-mutilation.
She insists “I really feel this is the way I was supposed to be born, that I should have been blind from birth . . . When there’s nobody around you who feels the same way, you start to think that you’re crazy. But I don’t think I’m crazy, I just have a disorder.”
This strikes most of us as a form of mental illness and the question is why a psychologist would participate in the mutilation of a patient to satisfy her craving to be blind. Obviously, such a doctor should be stripped of his or her license but there is no indication of any effort to identify the doctor. There is also the question of whether such action should be prosecuted as a crime. Many of us believe in the right of people to take their own lives but this is a case of someone who is clearly mentally ill seeking assistance with a mutilation of their body. Yet, there are clearly tough lines to draw here. After all, we allow people to engage in extensive piercings, branding, and blood lettings for recreation or style. Some are effectively permanent changes like the cutting of the tongue of “Lizard man.” Yet, this is a disability which imposes social costs for the community. The one thing that I am confidant about is that any doctor who participated in this action should not be treating patients of any kind. Shuping may be lying about the doctor but it seems hard to believe that someone could do this without help (at least not in both eyes as opposes to one eye given the pain, even with numbing drops). It is not impossible but, given her account, I would think that there would be an effort to determine the truth.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with it. When you have surgery to give the surgeon to right to assault and batter your body. Boxers do the same. What is the difference here. If Bruce Jenner can become a girl, she can become blind.
I see no difference in the maiming of this woman who purposely blinded herself and someone maiming their body by cutting off their genitals or breasts.
Both instances are of people who deny their own bodies and want to be something that they are not. She was not born blind but desired to be and blinded herself. She is mentally ill. People who are born genetically male or female and desire to be other are also delusional. An addadicktome operation does not make a woman a man and vice versa.
Delusions that the rest of us are supposed to play along with. Sorry. Not playing. Maim yourself. Destroy the body that you were given. Pretend to be a pretty pony with rainbow sparkles coming out your butt. I don’t care, but I’m not going to play that pretend game with you.
I will feel sorry for your mental pain and sorry for the pain that you cause others in your life who do care about you. Sorry in the sense that I have zero responsibility for your predicament or really much interest other than as a freak show.
So you were saying that people who agree with you are fearful and stupid?
Well, that changes things quite a lot!
“Your inability to admit your error is not my problem.”
A clear case of projection…

Last time:
I directly quoted you here.
Your inability to admit your error is not my problem.
“You still can’t properly quote me”
I directly quoted you here.
Now you are just flat out lying.
But SJWs always lie and they always double down.
So you do understand that “phobia” means “fear,” right?
And that “what they lack between their own ears” refers to cognitive deficits, right?
And that ‘mental deficiencies’ does not imply ‘intelligent’, right?
I proved you called people who disagree with you fearful and stupid, by cutting and pasting your own words for all to decide.
Admit you were wrong (or lied).
No, you simply misunderstood, although I can see someone thinking I meant otherwise.
As I said above, this referred to your evidence (aka ‘background’), not your training.
Now, show your proof, instead of bitching about the terms.

“I see the world and react to it as if I’m not my assigned sex at birth.’”
Where is your evidence for that definition?
Apparently you don’t read your own posts:

Being trans isn’t “body dysmorphia” as in, ‘Man, I fear my tits aren’t big enough so I’ll get a sex change.’
Being trans is sometimes called “gender dysphoria” as in, ‘oh boy, I see the world and react to it as if I’m not my assigned sex at birth.’
The “fear” response is in the limbic system, however, Max, for a clue.
“It is literally a problem in the brain’s processing of self image.”
Exactly.

“The rampant transphobia here is not surprising… The root of it all is called ignorance and fear.” I’m not scared of transgenders. I want everyone to be happy and healthy. Transgender has nothing to do with sexuality. A man can transition to a woman and still be attracted to women. My grave concern is that it is a type of body dysmorphia, and as such, there are obvious questions about the healthiest approach. If someone has body dysmorphia, is it healthiest to gratify it or treat it? Feeling like your body is not born how it should be is the same whether it’s your gender, the number of your limbs, skin color, or sight. I think that people confuse transgenderism with homosexuality, when it is not. It’s looking down at your body and not seeing what your mind expects.
I hate to see discussion shut down with the “phobia” terms. We need more speech and discussion about these issues, not less, and we shouldn’t be afraid to talk about it for fear we’ll be labeled “phobes”. I support and accept the transgender community, which is exactly why I worry about how such an issue is handled. Why is feeling like a man trapped in a woman’s body any different from feeling like you’re a black man trapped in a white man’s body, or an amputee trapped in an able person’s body? It is literally a problem in the brain’s processing of self image.
One can argue that blinding someone does harm, whereas changing gender does not. But in my example above, if a 6’5 man feels like he is a 25 year old petite girl trapped in a large man’s body, no surgery can fix that. It’s a false promise of a solution that can lead to heartache, depression, and suicide. And the fact remains that genitalia are amputated and reconstructed, and hormones with severe side effects are administered. With astronomical rates of depression and suicide, clearly the transgender community is not getting the help that it needs.
