The tragedy of the deaths and wounding of students and faculty of Umpqua Community College was without doubt a terrible event. We first and foremost must center our prayers and attention towards the victims and their families who have endured suffering and pain that we hope to never experience ourselves.
But if anything can be praised it is the police, emergency crews, and community members who took upon the risks and the responsibility to protect the victims and provide at least a measure of comfort to the survivors and those who did not make it. One person in particular truly caught my attention and I am sure everyone else as well. He is Chris Mintz, who undoubtedly saved several lives but as a result became one of the shooting victims himself.
His actions are truly heroic as you may certainly agree.
Chris Mintz was attending class at Umpqua Community College when he heard shots ring out in an adjacent room. Instead of running for safety, the ten year military veteran went toward the scene, directing people away from the danger. He found and walked toward the shooter, trying to prevent him from entering another classroom by blocking the doorway. He attempted to calm the shooter by talking to him and trying to buy time and life for the other students. Mintz certainly knew the great risk of facing this armed attacker alone and it did not go well for him.
Chris was hit multiple times from gunfire and went down. As the gunman walked toward him, Chris told his assailant that today was his son’s birthday. Showing no mercy his assailant shot him again.
In all Chris was shot seven times trying to protect others. Authorities credit Chris with delaying the shooter and in doing so likely saved numerous lives. Though exact details of the events are still in flux with reporting information, it is clear Chris Mintz’ actions were heroic and lifesaving.
Police arrived six minutes after the active shooter dispatch went out. Every second in distraction of the shooter helped law enforcement arrive and be able to more quickly confront the gunman, who then committed suicide.
A hospital spokesperson stated that Chris suffered hits to his hands, arms, back, stomach and both legs were broken. Despite this he is expected to recover but he will need extensive rehabilitation.
I cannot stress how brave his actions were and how inspiring his story can be for many.
His cousin sponsored a GoFundMe petition to help defray the costs of his medical bills. Social media took hold and contributions from seventeen thousand donors rapidly poured in. Initially ten thousand dollars was requested in the fund drive, but in the first twenty two hours over half a million dollars poured in from grateful citizens. It is certainly enlightening.
I have to stress that Chris Metz was not the only victim and that others suffered as much or worse as lives were tragically lost. Other victims now have similar pages started but have not yet garnered such large donations. Those also deserve contributions as well. Since it is only the beginning of such things I will at a later time attempt to compile a list of other victims’ pages or sources where funds may be directed in their direction.
UPDATE:Officials announced the shooter committed suicide during the shout-out with police.

Sorry I got it mixed up, memo was by one Eric Sheppard who is an antiwhite black racist apparently but not a murderer. Apologies to E.S. for that. Confusing article was the source, comparing his language to that of the shooter.
While I believe we should have freedom to utter strong and hateful political speech, I think it’s also fair to scrutinize the extent to which BLM agitators call on people to commit violence, and then when people do, we look into the connections to see if there is any credible evidence of a criminal conspiracy.
Also, there is a question of vicarious civil liability. Will we ever see a suit against a BLM type group, which is based on similar legal principles to those used to bankrupt white hate groups?

Let me Clear the Air and Set the Record Straight once and For All on Questions Inquiries Suggestions and otherwise in regards to this Entire Ordeal. We Will Determine who Is Truly Guilty and Who is Truly Innocent Throughout the Course of this Literary Revelation. Many still question the possibility of my surrendering to the people who call themselves “authorities”. To Give you a Simple Answer, No! I will Not Turn Myself Over to Any White Man and I will Ensure this With my Own Will to Self-Defend and To Annihilate those Who Come After Me. These same people who you all know as “legal officials/police officers/sheriff/detectives” or any other falsified label of ‘authority’ only know wickedness and devilish behavior. It SHOULD be clear by now that this is a White Supremacist Nation Owned, Operated, and Controlled by White People. Yes it is ALL white people who help to maintain this wicked nation to a greater or lesser degree given the default status aided to them by virtue or vice of White Privilege. Thus all functionalities, codes, rules, policies, curriculums, cultures and social criteria created or concocted therein are Meant to Benefit Whites ALONE AND EXCLUSIVELY! The recent yet ongoing hideous & disgusting rash of white supremacist brutality (police brutality) as well as All other forms of European Aggression on Afrikan people here in Amerikkka; as well as the emanating circumstances that have precipitated into a sick/vile pattern show CLEARLY that “white” people can and will escape Just Punishment (Justice) so long as it is In alignment and Cooperation with the White Supremacist Agenda of Afrikan Genetic Annihilation of ANY form. Extreme Cognitive Dissonance causes ALL of You white people to Deny this TRUTH however when Afrikan People Drop the ‘Realistics’, Kick the Ballistics and Present to You the Statistics Recorded and Documented by Your Own white mathematicians and social scientist you revert to weak racist and ignorant “justifications” to affirm your false sense of correctness in the continuity of your White Supremacist Power System Structure (Racism). This rhetoric is believed to be true because it is presented under a cloak of Jingoistic Amerikkkan Nationalism. I have No Interest in Cooperating WHATSOEVER with a Nation Run by Devils, Low-Lifes and Deviants such as Yourselves. Make no Mistake about it, it is White People who I am Speaking On and Black People who I am Speaking To so as to Raise them Out of the Psycho-Hypnosis Instilled and Drilled in their Afrikan Mind by that wicked and deceitful European race who call themselves “whites”…………….
Interesting debate but I am interested in the derivative debate about whether or not the race and affiliations of the shooter have been waffled. I heard so so much about other mass shooters being “white males” who were supposedly “associated” with this or that “hate group,” but I want to know, if we needed to know that, don’t we need to know this was a “black male” and that he “may have been associated” with BLM?
Turns out CNN is also giving him a skin lightening treatment.

We know why. But if the last mass shooter was a racist, don’t we need to know this one was a racist too? a black antiwhite racist murderer?

The memorandum by Sheppard referenced this weekends graduation, saying, “When my People descend upon that Hellish pit on May 23rd for commemoration of Kendrick Johnson’s life and if they are met with even the slightest inclination of resistance by any pale skinned beast or aid they are more than Justified to Take your Head and post it on a stake for the Entire world to See.”
Sheppard spoke to The Daily Times by telephone Monday, saying he would release the video and statement, including his position on the police manhunt for him. Both were sent to the paper Thursday.
“Many still question the possibility of my surrendering to the people who call themselves ‘authorities,’ ” the statement said. “To give you a simple answer, No. I will not turn myself over to any white man,” he wrote.

“More than two-thirds of all homicides in the United States are gun-related. Of the 16,121 homicides reported in 2013, 11,208 were caused by gun violence. Including suicides, nearly 34,000 people died in gun-related incidents in 2013, up 13.8% from 10 years earlier.”

Here’s one that shows homicide rates per state.

Firearm mortality rate by state.
David I don’t know what your talking about, as everyone of my charts speaks of “GUN RELATED” deaths. I don’t see where they refer to homicide in general.
Annie wrote: “David I don’t know what your talking about, as everyone of my charts speaks of “GUN RELATED” deaths. I don’t see where they refer to homicide in general.”
That is my point. By posting your charts, you mislead many people into thinking that higher gun ownership is related to more people being murdered. The fact that guns are harder to get only means that people use other means to kill. We do not save lives by taking away the right of people to own guns, so your argument is specious.
Even in Australia, when all the guns were taken away after a massacre, the number of violent crimes did not subside. Murder rates did not go down. So taking away their right to gun ownership accomplished little except maybe give them a false sense of security. Oh, well, I think suicide rates did go down just a little, so I guess that might have been one benefit. More study is necessary to know whether that was an effect of the new anti-gun laws or something else.
“Annie …You need to compare gun ownership with the homicide rate, not the homicide by firearm rate. Otherwise, you are guilty of lying with statistics.”
SJWs always lie.
Annie – based on your chart, it appears other things are affecting the use of guns in killing other than the gun laws themselves. WA, DC, NE, VT, MD, and WI all have similar number of deaths yet have a very diverse set of gun laws. It appears, as I was saying in my last comment, wealth disparity plays a part.
“Parker and his fellow students sought refuge in a classroom, where they waited for two hours. Had the gunman come near them, Parker said, he would have defended the group.”
Right. So how does this undermine the argument that armed citizens can take down a crazed mass shooter? He gave the exact same argument used to support this – if he was attacked, he would have defended himself and those nearby.
But he was NOT in close proximity, and therefor he made the decision to seek shelter in a defensible position.
These shooters typically keep shooting until someone shows up with a gun, whether a citizen or the police. Then they either surrender or kill themselves. Literally another armed person is the only thing that stops them. They just keep shooting until that person shows up.
I do support background checks at gun shows and other private sales to help keep firearms out of the hands of felons and the mentally ill. However, as I’ve noted before, the vast majority of states do an abysmal job of updating the instant database.
The most recent reports I’ve read stated that he bought his firearms legally. I am curious to know how gun laws would prevent someone from waking up one day and deciding to commit murder with a gun, unless you repeal the 2nd amendment, in which case he would have to resort to using his car, a knife, or some other weapon. Because no law will prevent a criminal from killing.
By definition, those who follow the law are law-abiding citizens. The strict gun laws in Chicago have not stopped the gangs from rendering their neighborhoods into war zones, just like the laws against murder have not prevented them from killing innocent people as well as each other.
I think the two most pressing issues regarding mass shootings is our broken mental health care system, as well as this generation’s fixation on being famous . . . or infamous.
Karen, very good arguments.
The following is something that I have been considering over the years. I would go one step farther in that our system has created something similar to a cast system, with one group approx. 1/3 or 1/4 of the Citizens enjoying the benefits of our societies production with the other 2/3s or 3/4s providing much of the labor and receiving little benefits.
We call it wealth disparity. The upper class have lost contact and/or knowledge with/of the lower class by disassociating themselves both economically and socially. Just as the aristocracy became a layer between the King and the masses, the professional class as I call them which includes those such as movie stars, singers and other entertainers and industrialists/business owners/bankers and investment bankers, etc.
You may have heard the old cliché “the first million is the hardest to make”. We have placed so many entry barriers on the lower class that they are losing hope. I have a friend that has now spent over $6,500 and 10 months just getting the necessary approvals to become a home inspector and he had already been a general contractor for 30 years. It would be almost impossible for someone to accomplish this if he had to be employed during this period. It took me over $5,000 and I already had many of the tools to start my own Appraisal company. The struggle was worth it but it was a huge struggle because my income almost doubled. That does not include the necessary marketing and other things you have to do to get business and keep it. If you don’t try to start your own enterprise, the system is set up to make the owner substantially more money than the employee. However recent public policy has in my opinion, destroyed the real estate appraisal industry and now employs a high degree of what some call crony capitalism under the control of the bankers through what are called Appraisal Management Companies (AMCs). A cleaver method of taking control over the industry by the central banksters. I can tell you how it all works but not now.
A number of social policies are causing this disparity in wealth and income in my opinion, but that is one of the great topics within our society. Is the mixed economic, the so-called private/public partnership model superior to the capitalist model, limited government and the protection of individual rights or vice versa. Obviously no one today considers communism as a viable long term economic model so we are left to debate among the two potential systems.
We have crushed our lower class which is now just one large group, trying desperately to get into the upper class because it is so difficult to survive with the wages and benefits being offered and obtained, especially in the private sector, but surely in the lowers rungs of the public sector as well.
In many cities, if you are not making $50,000 a year, you are living at or near the poverty line. Between job security, taxation, healthcare costs including food, utilities, insurance and housing costs, having a decent life and having such thinks as an actual family is darn near impossible.
Real total unemployment rates are well above 10% and much of our countries productivity is government contracting. The mixed economic model either needs some severe tweaking or it needs to be scraped and capitalism allowed to once again prevail. What ever is done it needs to be done quickly.
Our current system is going to be very hard to change. Not one politician in my life time, except those few like Ron Paul, have offered up a viable system, yet is demonized as unelectable by the main stream media.
Really, Trump, according to the NYTs is leading the Pew poll and Ron Paul was unelectable.
Can you think of any politician in our lifetime whom has offered a group of public policy initiatives that would actually work. Each year they all raise issues that are grandiose and appealing, yet when you do the math, they are unworkable and more importantly unsustainable.
When you provide such little hope to an entire socioeconomic class as large as it is, the discontentment and hopelessness is surely going to push some people over the edge. I think that is also what we are seeing.
Gun control would probably only make things worse, as did alcohol prohibition and as is drug prohibition. When you take away a right, it appears to me, that there would be those who would rebel against it. It appears the more rights that have been usurped the more rebellion we have had.
As an example in Norway, the first approx. $50,000 of income is tax exempt, yet not one politician is the US is embracing this. Are they so disconnected from the “underclass” they do not see or hear their unhappiness?
They had to Google. LOL!
