Report: Senators Voted Unanimously To Lift The Bar on Suing Saudi Arabia . . . But Then Added Poison Pill Provision Allowing The Administration To Bar Such Lawsuits

Senators lined up to vote unanimously with the 9/11 families and to reject the threats of Saudi Arabia to wreck economic havoc on the United States. However, it was revealed this week that Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. added a small amendment to the bill that gave the Administration the right to bar such lawsuits. Since the Administration opposes the changing of the law, its position is quite clear. Now many are objecting that the Senate vote was knowingly misleading given the Schumer amendment.


The families believed that they were finally able to sue with the lifting of the restrictions under the JASTA. However, the new section gives the Justice and State departments the power to stay court action indefinitely. The Justice Department merely has to inform the judge that there are diplomatic discussions regarding the issue.

All they have to do is inform the judge hearing the case that the US government has engaged with ­Riyadh in diplomatic talks to resolve the issue. The “Stay of Actions Pending State Negotiations” was slipped into the bill at the last minute without any discussion. It requires only a certification that the United States is “engaged in good-faith discussions with the foreign-state defendant concerning the resolution of claims against the foreign state.”

With the change, Senators could vote for the law and stand up to the Saudis while quietly giving the Administration an easy way to again block the families.

  3. Darren, One would think so, but then if you know anything about Chucky Schumer, you would know Chucky doesn’t give a rat’s ass about anyone but Chucky. People in this country are fed up. Why the hell do you think a Donald Trump is on the cusp of being president. He is the middle finger to the establishment. Well, at least that’s what his followers believe.

    What is a “Senate Bill”? Or who is a Senate Bill? Should I look up the names of all senators and look for those with first name William and then assume he goes by Bill? This is all confusing.

  9. Schumer is worthless and has always been. He speaks out of both sides of his mouth. Well at least he’s made his friends the Saudis happy. And he has made sure Obama can continue to rely on them for …..what was that again that we rely on them for …contributions to campaigns, libraries and foundations of former presidents. That must be it because we cannot rely on them for anything else except maybe funding terrorists.

    With all the talk about “Israeli Lobby” one hears it’s truly amazing the power of the Arab/Saudi/Petroleum lobby goes almost unnoticed. I’m not sure there is a more powerful influence group out there than the Saudi Lobby. On this matter they controlled the WH and the Senate. Including an alleged staunch supporter of Israel, Brother Schumer.

    Clearly, the amount of power and influence of the Saudi Lobby cannot be overestimated.

  16. One would think that a senator from New York, of all states, would be on the side of the victims and their families comprising his own constituency. One has to also wonder to whom’s side they are truly loyal. It seems fitting for them to further entreat their employers by collectively travelling to Riyadh and bow to kings and princes.

    The furtherance of this bill was purely smoke and mirrors, to con the public into believing their representatives and senators that they were politicians of action, determined to remedy the evil those victims experienced: many horribly. But, in the end they craft legislation amounting to lip service.

    We have seen over the years some rather, according to most, incredulous accounts of the US government’s complicity in the 9/11 attacks. Now it is in this measure certainly evident that the US government is complicit in denying the American people the truth in how the Saudi Arabian royal family WAS involved in the attacks and allowing them to escape accountability and the administration of justice.

    This legislation is a sham. But, from the politician’s point of view it was very rewarding. They can now throw open the doors to their friends–the Saudi Lobby–and their wallets as well.

    It is disgraces such as this for which the American citizenry holds Congress in such contempt.
