DNC CFO Marshall Apologizes For Email Pushing Religious-Based Attack On Sanders [UPDATED]

Wasserman SchultzThe Democratic National Committee (DNC) is still attempting to spin out of the scandal over the recently leaked emails showing that, as long claimed by critics, it was undermining Bernie Sanders and rigging the process for Hillary Clinton during the primaries. It would seem obvious to most of us that not only should Debbie Wasserman Schultz resign, but a number of DNC officials fired for the emails, particularly DNC CFO Brad Marshall. Yet, the DNC is been largely quiet and clearly hoping that Democrats simply do not care if they have been directly misled by the DNC, which sought to engineer the win for Clinton.  It may be right.  Many Democratic voters (like many Republican voters) seem to have simply accepted that politicians lie to them and that people who are demanding honesty from leaders are naive (or do not see “the bigger picture”).  The DNC is clearly hunkering down to see if “this too shall pass” with voters.  While Wasserman Schultz has given up her speaking role at the convention, she is clinging on to the chairmanship of the party. Update: Wasserman Schultz has resigned but there is still little media attention to Marshall, Davey, and others at the DNC who actively plotted against Sanders).

The sheer mendacity of the Democratic leadership in these emails is breathtaking.  At the very time that these officials were denying allegations that they were undermining Sanders at every turn, Marshall and his colleagues were secretly doing exactly what they were publicly denying.  However, Marshall was particularly disgraceful in his effort to use Sanders’ faith against him.  He pushed for an attack on Sanders as an agnostic or atheist. That should not sit well with the millions of agnostics and atheists in this country — one of the fastest going segments of the population.

Marshall wrote that “for KY and WVA can we get someone to ask his belief. Does he believe in a God. He had skated on saying he has a Jewish heritage. I think I read he is an atheist. This could make several points difference with my peeps. My Southern Baptist peeps would draw a big difference between a Jew and an atheist.” This went to various DNS communications directors who were also busy denying that any secret effort against Sanders.DNC CEO Amy Dacey responded “Amen”  Both Dacey and Marshall have been part of a concerted denial of such efforts and both should have been fired with other officials involved in these exchanges.

Marshall’s apology only magnifies the problem.  He wrote

“I deeply regret that my insensitive, emotional emails would cause embarrassment to the DNC, the Chairwoman, and all of the staffers who worked hard to make the primary a fair and open process. The comments expressed do not reflect my beliefs nor do they reflect the beliefs of the DNC and its employees. I apologize to those I offended.”

Really?  You send an email to other DNC officials suggesting an attack on a Democratic candidate’s religion and, after being caught, you say that it does not “reflect my beliefs”?  This was not some aside at a party but an email sent to other party functionaries.  Moreover, Marshall makes no mention of the fact that he, Dacey, and Wasserman Schultz were denying such a secret campaign against Sanders at the very time that these emails were sent.  The very fact that the DNC did not immediately dump Marshall, Dacey and others is telling.  Indeed, they should have been let go when these emails were sent, let alone after they were forced to acknowledge their dishonest and disgraceful conduct.

  1. Autumn, I tend to visualize people I only know via phone, email, etc. I have you as a cougar, not a tiger.

  2. I hear that Susan Collins might “come out” tomorrow. No, not as some gender thing but come out against The Donald. She is the Republican Senator from Maine.

  3. @Nick

“women of all stripes” should I be offended? Or consider myself to be a tiger?

  4. I go to Cloud 9 for the Donald communications. He sent one out to his staff and fans saying he wants to gain a lot of media attention during the Democratic Convention.

  5. I am very pleased to see at least 50%, maybe 60-70% of the comments on this thread are from women. We got rid of the paternalistic, liberal, men and it has opened up for women of all stripes.

  6. i Love this: “http://www.mcclatchydc.com/news/politics-government/election/article91623012.html

Big Donors and the Obama/Clinton/DNC machine! Fabulous fun!

  7. @Tnash!

Oh, that was brilliant!!! ROTF!!! I am going to steal that line, which is the sincerest form of flattery!

    @Jill

“sin eater” is also a new term, which was used on the Fox TV show, Sleepy Hollow! But it is a kewl concept! I love stuff like that. Like the “Wandering Jew”, and Tom O’ Bedlams. Which is probably why I love T.S. Eliot, and all his allusions, like “The horned’ gate.”

  8. Putin is said to be preparing a statement about the hacked DNC emails.
It is anticipated that he will insist that he did not hack any DNC emails “marked classified”.

  9. Rose, here is my simple question again. Even if Putin personally drone delivered the leaks to Julian, does that mean they are not true? DWS resigned over them so that sounds like they may be true.

I have no objections to criticizing Trump. Feel free. Like Autumn I would love it if the US got out of the WTO and stopped expanding/supporting NATO. These are two sources of real trouble in the world and usually progressives tend to agree with Trump’s position on those issues. But sure, if you don’t like those things, feel free!

These leaks are quite serious. 1. collusion with the press to do the bidding of the powerful 2. disenfranchising voters 3. contempt of voters such as calling Hispanics, “taco voters” 3. breaking financial laws in the Clinton campaign and so on.

Instead of engaging these issues head on you want to deflect away from them. That is the classic behavior of a Democratic loyalist.

P,S. “sin eater” is a very old term which has an interesting history. Darren is correct in his analysis of DWS resignation.

  10. Squeek,

I thought you might enjoy this article about a man who walked from Detroit to attend the RNC convention. I am on Trump’s email list as well as Bernie’s and got an invite today to join him in Winston-Salem, NC – not too far from Charleston, but unfortunately I have another committment. I think it would be very interesting. The Bernie rallies I’ve been too are great – everyone is happy – like a Grateful Dead concert w/o the weed. I sense a Trump rally would have a different energy.

You know what I think? I think that you are afraid to go to a site like Breitbart because it would be very uncomfortable for you. You would encounter a different way of looking at things, and who knows, you might even have to start thinking new thoughts. How stressful!

But on the good side, the fact that you are scared means that you still have a chance of recovering your mental facilities. There is still a part of you that you are afraid might spring to life, I hope that you change your mind and just “Go for it!”

Plus, what’s the worse that could happen? BTW, if you can’t screw up the courage to go to Breitbart (shudder) after my pep talk, then here is you a non Breitbart source for the movie. Just plain old youtube:

Well, suit yourself. I look for valid content no matter the source. I suppose you read the Washington Post as it is socially-sanctioned MSM? Bezos has totally ruined that paper’s reputation – Katharine Graham is surely whirling in her grave. After they published 16 negative articles about Bernie in 16 hours I knew the “fix” was in. Trump has blocked them access – smart guy.

  13. That’s the out fit that that creepy stalker O’Keefe worked for.

  14. @swm

You said, “No thank you. Breitbart is a source of far right wing propaganda.”

My goodness, grow up! No wonder you have so much trouble with new thoughts. Does the Democratic Party have you sooo well-trained that you won’t even visit non echo-chamber sites??? C’mon, just pretend you are being a bad girl and sneaking around behind your parents back!

  15. BWAHAHAHA! Hillary “Clueless” Clinton!!!

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, prior to the announcement of Wasserman Schultz’s resignation, said she was unqualified for the role of DNC chair.

In a press release Hillary Clinton said Wasserman Schultz will serve as honorary chair of her campaign.
