DNC CFO Marshall Apologizes For Email Pushing Religious-Based Attack On Sanders [UPDATED]

Wasserman SchultzThe Democratic National Committee (DNC) is still attempting to spin out of the scandal over the recently leaked emails showing that, as long claimed by critics, it was undermining Bernie Sanders and rigging the process for Hillary Clinton during the primaries. It would seem obvious to most of us that not only should Debbie Wasserman Schultz resign, but a number of DNC officials fired for the emails, particularly DNC CFO Brad Marshall. Yet, the DNC is been largely quiet and clearly hoping that Democrats simply do not care if they have been directly misled by the DNC, which sought to engineer the win for Clinton.  It may be right.  Many Democratic voters (like many Republican voters) seem to have simply accepted that politicians lie to them and that people who are demanding honesty from leaders are naive (or do not see “the bigger picture”).  The DNC is clearly hunkering down to see if “this too shall pass” with voters.  While Wasserman Schultz has given up her speaking role at the convention, she is clinging on to the chairmanship of the party. Update: Wasserman Schultz has resigned but there is still little media attention to Marshall, Davey, and others at the DNC who actively plotted against Sanders).

The sheer mendacity of the Democratic leadership in these emails is breathtaking.  At the very time that these officials were denying allegations that they were undermining Sanders at every turn, Marshall and his colleagues were secretly doing exactly what they were publicly denying.  However, Marshall was particularly disgraceful in his effort to use Sanders’ faith against him.  He pushed for an attack on Sanders as an agnostic or atheist. That should not sit well with the millions of agnostics and atheists in this country — one of the fastest going segments of the population.

Marshall wrote that “for KY and WVA can we get someone to ask his belief. Does he believe in a God. He had skated on saying he has a Jewish heritage. I think I read he is an atheist. This could make several points difference with my peeps. My Southern Baptist peeps would draw a big difference between a Jew and an atheist.” This went to various DNS communications directors who were also busy denying that any secret effort against Sanders.DNC CEO Amy Dacey responded “Amen”  Both Dacey and Marshall have been part of a concerted denial of such efforts and both should have been fired with other officials involved in these exchanges.

Marshall’s apology only magnifies the problem.  He wrote

“I deeply regret that my insensitive, emotional emails would cause embarrassment to the DNC, the Chairwoman, and all of the staffers who worked hard to make the primary a fair and open process. The comments expressed do not reflect my beliefs nor do they reflect the beliefs of the DNC and its employees. I apologize to those I offended.”

Really?  You send an email to other DNC officials suggesting an attack on a Democratic candidate’s religion and, after being caught, you say that it does not “reflect my beliefs”?  This was not some aside at a party but an email sent to other party functionaries.  Moreover, Marshall makes no mention of the fact that he, Dacey, and Wasserman Schultz were denying such a secret campaign against Sanders at the very time that these emails were sent.  The very fact that the DNC did not immediately dump Marshall, Dacey and others is telling.  Indeed, they should have been let go when these emails were sent, let alone after they were forced to acknowledge their dishonest and disgraceful conduct.

  1. I think it’s terrific that the Donald wants to downsize NATO – Bernie and Jill are on board with that as well. The US has “around 800 bases in foreign countries” around the world according to American U professor David Vine who has written extensively about this subject. Scary scary Russia “has around eight in former Soviet republics.”

While Bernie and Jill are all about the peace aspect, the Donald focuses (rightly IMO) on the fiscal angle – the US taxpayers are footing the bill – for renting the land, for building AAFES shopping centers AND shipping over their goods to sell, for all the hospitals, equipment, food, etc.

And when a base is closed it all reverts back as in the case of my alma mater Stuttgart American High School. The school was completely upgraded and within a few years Pattonville was closed and it went back to the Germans. Some contracting company got a deal.

Meanwhile here in the US many students go to schools with barely functioning air conditioners/heaters, nary a smart board, the teachers buy school supplies out their own meagre incomes, etc.

  2. The Trump sons are trophy hunters. Good old priivileged boys………….

  3. “What’s worse is the killing of black Africans sanctioned by the Clinton Foundation’s corporate donors.” Not saying you are wrong, Autumn, but could you provide a link or some documentation?

  4. @Rose

So the Trumps go on safari and kill exotic creatures. Personally, I don’t approve as I am an animal lover – but then again I am not a hunter. Many of my friends are and they are great folks. I’m pretty certain it was legally-sanctioned hunt.

What’s worse is the killing of black Africans sanctioned by the Clinton Foundation’s corporate donors.

  5. @jill

so glad to see that Rose acknowledges your “high moral integrity” — I hold the same views about you but had never expressed them.

I was reminded of one of my favorite quotes by the late great William Sloan Coffin, Civil Rights activist and chaplain at Yale. You know how “pragmatic” folk are fond of saying “don’t let the perfect get in the way of the good” – I heard that a LOT when I started criticizing Obama’s corporate ties, drones, etc.

“The devil is always suggesting that we compromise our high calling by substituting the good in place of the best.”

  6. Jill

Obviously, you are a woman of the very highest moral integrity. You remind us all of that without pause. But why so many false conclusions about my positions? Not very moral of you.

I have had the greatest antipathy for DWS for many years. I am delighted she will resign on Friday and I hope she loses her election.

Now why don’t you and the gang here and the Professor concern yourselves with some important stuff like Trump suggesting pulling out of the WTO, screwing Nato, charging Japan for our protection, and easing the libel laws. One would really expect that this free speech blog would be concerned about Trump’s idea about making it easy to sue journalists.

Or you can continue spreading your fear laden alarms about a couple of moronic liberals who are going to lead the revolution if Trump is elected.

And if you have any leftover time, you can dig up and post all the videos, twitter, and social media junk questioning Sander’s faith so we can see the implementation of all the DNC nefarious plans and thus be assured that such stupid suggestions were not just like a thousand stupid, fevered ideas that get tossed around when planning a campaign and are quickly and blessedly forgotten.

Failing that – you can just get Gov. Christie to run another trial as he did at the RNC convention and convict the emailers of thought crimes. There should be no problem with getting the shouts of GUILTY from this crowd. I assume you will not call for their execution by firing squad as the NH Republican Trump advisor called for the execution of HRC.

  7. Oh well little debbie goes home and hopefully lose congress critter seat. Then the next day she on the board of pay day loans and day after the clinton foundation. It’s her reward for job will done, she must have studied lee atwater and the tricky dick election book of dirty deeds done dirt cheap.

  8. @SWM
Thanks for the link. Naturally the military industrial complex which has feed off the American taxpayer like leeches wants to excite the gullible public into viewing Russia as a threat so they can extract even more profitable contracts.

It’s the homegrown enemies that I fear more.

  9. @SWM

re: “Marcia Fudge will chair the convention. So maybe something good HAS come out of the hack.”

Marcia FUDGE – perfect as the DNC has been fudging the (s)election all along. Seriously, you can’t make this sh!t up!

  10. Billionaire ($46 Billion), Mike Bloomberg is coming to rescue DNC.

Sometimes philanthropy doesn’t work. Bolivia Indians tells Bill Gates to drop dead.
Bolivia rejects “offensive” 150 thousand chicken donation from Bill Gates.

Mike & Bill need to go to a Bolivia Tinku festival. Then they will understand.

  11. The DNC in this controversy has succeeded so far. The worst outcome they anticipate is for the public to demand the Sin Eaters such as Wasserman Schultz apologize and resign. An acceptable cost considering that in the end they destroyed any possibility of Mr. Sanders becoming the nominee.

Meanwhile Hillary Clinton succeeds in her goal of achieving the nomination, regardless of all the damage caused or rules broken. She can then pay off the Sin Eaters for their loyalty. (or burn them as they are just as expendable in her mind as any of the “Useful Idiots” who fawn over her and do as they are told)

  12. @SWM,

Source of article por favor. Hmm, well we know that Snowden is in Russia……..

    @Sqeek
    Love the Putin photo!
