“They Wanted To Get Away With It”: Newly Released Emails Show Rising Alarm Over Clinton Aides Withholding Information On Email Scandal

Hillary_Clinton_Testimony_to_House_Select_Committee_on_BenghaziNewly released emails from Wikileaks show that aides became alarmed when President Barack Obama assured the public that he had learned about Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server as secretary of state “the same time everybody else learned it, through news reports.” Cheryl D. Mills, a top aide who featured prominently in the email scandal and insisted on immunity before turning over a laptop with classified information, flagged the issue to say that Obama sent emails to Clinton’s private email. There is also an exchange of campaign officials complaining that close Clinton aides withheld the information of the email scandal because “they wanted to get away with it.” As I discussed in a recent column, these Wikileaks memos have confirmed the worst assumptions of voters about the dishonesty and evasion of their government. It has turned this into America’s Game of Thrones election.

The White House quickly corrected the President’s comments and said that, while he used the private email, he really did not realize it was not a .gov email. I am willing to accept that account for a man who is incredibly busy. However, I remain amazed that security staff did not raise any alarm over the president corresponding with the Secretary of State over a private email system.

The more interesting exchange came between Neera Tanden, another adviser, and campaign manager John Podesta on March 2, 2015. Tanden complained about the impact of the undisclosed problem and blamed Ms. Mills for another “Cheryl special.” The complaint is a familiar one: that close Clinton aides reflect the same self-defeating secrecy and evasion as their candidate, a subject of a prior column. Tanden asked “Why didn’t they get this stuff out like 18 months ago? So crazy,” Podesta responded simply with “Unbelievable.” Tanden then responded “i guess I know the answer. they wanted to get away with it.”

In a direct slam of Clinton’s judgment (a major campaign theme), Podesta says “We’ve taken on a lot of water that won’t be easy to pump out of the boat. Most of that has to do with terrible decisions made pre-campaign, but a lot has to do with her instincts.” Tanden responds “Almost no one knows better [than] me that her instincts can be terrible.”

Podesta also shows the coordination between the Administration and the campaign in withholding embarrassing emails. Obviously, emails with the president would be treated as presumptively classified. Podesta tells Mills “Think we should hold emails to and from POTUS. We could get them to ask for that.”

  1. “We need to clean this up — he has emails from her — they do not say state.gov,” Mills reportedly wrote in newly leaked emails.”

Is there any remaining doubt about the trustworthiness of Hillary Clinton? So here we are, left to choose between two seriously flawed candidates and some 3rd party (unelectable) other options. If we must choose between either Trump or Clinton, which of the two will be dogged by the 4th estate? Which of the two will have transparency forced upon them? Which one will be free to run roughshod over what remains of our civil liberties?

This is not a matter of who one trusts will BE the better President. This is about which one won’t be allowed to BE the worst.

    1. One of them is also more likely to be impeached if guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors.

  2. I am willing to accept that account for a man who is incredibly busy? You mean the man who is so incredibly busy that he had no trouble finding sufficient time, over the past 8 years, to sit around and yap during his numerous and frequent visits to various talk shows over the years? You mean that incredibly busy guy? The one who can somehow manage to sit around, with the yentas from The View, and shoot the breeze? Or, perhaps, do you mean the incredibly busy guy who spent an inordinate amount of time playing golf or hosting rap stars at the White House? So who is he? Is he the purportedly bright and talented individual, who sailed through Harvard Law, with a sharp and perceptive mind, or is he a dolt, too dimwitted and high to notice the most obvious of problems? It can’t be both, Turley, no matter how hard you try to spin it.

    1. BB, I WANT Obama to stay busy on the golf course. He can do less damage that way. And stop flying around the country on taxpayer dollars (along with Michelle and Uncle Joe) to promote the Queen of Horrors.

  3. Sad day for this nation, each day more and more is revealed and yet you have people who still want to elect this woman. Her own organization label her instincts “terrible”, every statement she makes is a lie, the law treats her differently then the average citizen, Obamacare is a mess for which each democrat who voted for it is to blame, the press is a propaganda machine for the democrats and lies and covers for them.

Trump is disliked by the female vote but they are all in for this woman. Woman want equality with men in all phases but are proving they they have terrible instincts as well as Hilly. I see these fools men and woman standing on stage with her all gitty belly bumping with the most corrupt half of a corrupt pair. In the wings stands Princess Chelsea prepping for her future role.

    1. I despise her more than Trump and I am a woman, same goes for a few other women on here.

      1. Damn straight Prairie Rose! Even Jill Stein sez HRC is more dangerous than Trump. We must band together and defeat the Beast.

        1. Thank God for you two, I wish your sisters didn’t buy into the “woman hate Trump” mantra.

    2. Democrats have polled notably better among women since at least 1988. The distinction is found in the views of unmarried women v. unmarried men. Married men and women have similar dispositions. It’s easy to overstate this. Trump has a large bloc of support among women and Clinton has a large bloc of support among men. Where you see lopsided totals, it’s among communally defined groups (blacks, Puerto Ricans, California chicanos, and, to a lesser degree, Jews and Southern evangelicals).

  4. Hillary will probably win. What will be interesting is her 1st 100 days in office.

I’m betting either a country like Russia, North Korea or 1 of the Arab states will pick a military fight with Hillary. Buckle up. This could be a rough ride. Maybe Hillary & Bill have a plan to strike 1st. Payback is a B***ch.

    1. If Hillary wins, there will be guerrilla warfare on the establishment. If Trump wins, there will be guerrilla warfare on the middle class.

      1. There already is, and has been for some time, and will be for some time to come, “guerrilla warfare on the middle class”.

      2. No, Trump isn’t running to hurt anybody. He doesn’t need more money. He sees what so many commenting here sees. Hillary wants to change our country as Obama did.

    2. Our soldiers have sworn no oath to the progressive left nor any particular of their leaders. Only to the Constitution. What has that to do with the left? Nothing. Nor with us. If she wishes war let her learn to pick up a rifle and have at them. No More Cannon Fodder for these wicked people. No more baby factories.

  5. “I am willing to accept that account for a man who is incredibly busy.”

Really? Why give him a pass? The corruption in government runs deep. He has continued us down the path of an Imperial Presidency. He lied about boots being on the ground in Syria, so why not a lie about knowing when he noticed her non-authorized email address. What did the NSA notice? Why did they not say anything?

She surely sent emails to the other Secretaries. Why did they not say anything? Do they have their own private, FOIA-violating emails and servers?

    1. Oh, that’s right, they probably do. At least, President Obama appears to:

FBI’s interview notes with Huma Abedin released by the FBI it was first revealed that Obama had used a pseudonymous email account: “Once informed that the sender’s name is believed to be pseudonym used by the president, Abedin exclaimed: ‘How is this not classified?'” the report says. “Abedin then expressed her amazement at the president’s use of a pseudonym and asked if she could have a copy of the email.”

      1. Yes, Prairie Rose,

I was going to mention this. Obama uses all kinds of private e-mail accounts to do his govt. business and there’s evidence this was about avoiding compliance with FOIA and other ways of covering over illegal actions.

This is a very scary time. USGinc. is being exposed and they don’t like such things. Since human life means absolutely nothing to any of these people, there is no guessing what they will do. so far they have really turned up the propaganda and bombed more countries. They are in process of starting a war with Russia, one they desperately want. Still, I’m very glad this corruption, lying and illegality is coming out.

        Truth is necessary for justice.

        1. If I’ve understood correctly, there are different factions in the US regarding what to do with Russia. The one thing they all want is regime change. Putin must go because he is successfully protecting Russia from the same economic plunder happening to varying degrees in Greece, Ukraine, Spain, Portugal, Ireland and so on. But how to get rid of him is where there are differences. Obama has been trying to do it by economic and political means (Ukraine and the sanctions) whereas the military – and Hillary – want to push Putin into making military blunders and they are recklessly betting Russia will stop short of nuclear response. On the Syrian military front, Obama (and Kerry) have been outflanked somewhat by the military brass simply going ahead and doing what they want and have had to get out in front of events trying to make it look like a parade they are leading.

Of course it’s pretty muddy because there are other concerns than Russia in the Middle East that Obama does feel warrant military effort and expense. I could easily be mistaken, but I suspect Obama has some awareness of the dangers we are getting into vis-à-vis Russia; but he is too weak (on multiple levels) to go up against the MIC full tilt in the Syrian case.

          1. Good article at the Hedge today, while we are doing this ridiculous show, Putin has been firming up new relationships with the ME countries. He has a pipeline deal to Urkraine now, and good relations with Turkey, military exercises scheduled with Egypt, and has visited Netanyahu. He is doing the job that a good diplomat should do. Look at our children in government, they just call them names and bomb them. How did we end up with these fools?

            1. How does the Ukraine pipeline affect the one proposed from Saudi Arabia/Qatar(?) to the the EU. It was supposed to go through Syria and Turkey. Assad did not approve it and now we have a war.

    2. And he didn’t know about IRS abuses until he heard it on the news. He should have been impeached for Obamacare. He lied over and over. Spent money not directed to Ocare. He broke laws. He’s ruled as a dictator with Executive Orders. Incredible lack of Congress doing its job.

  6. I would love to see Turley in the US Supreme Court.
He would bring some much needed quality control and refreshing honesty to the court.
And he would be ruling on the law, not based upon political special interests and ancillary concessions.

  7. DC has become the wealthiest city in the US. All that city produces are lobbyists, laws and regulations. Kudos to JT for continuing to report on this coup. Because make no mistake, our govt. has been taken over by a duopoly coup.

    1. Yes, Nick, he reports about it; yet, he reports about it by commenting that he can understand how someone so busy, as the President, could overlook such a blatant and obvious problem. In essence, giving the President, and everyone surrounding him, a pass. His acknowledgement that this was an acceptable “mistake” and not a flagrant violation of our security standards. You mean that kind of coverage? It’s great that JT covers these topics, but how about a little candor? An unbiased opinion, which shows that he is judging these matters in an objective and impartial manner. Exclaiming the President to be too busy to pick up on such trivialities smacks of the lack of objectivity on the part of JT, where he is too timid of frightened, for whatever the reason, to call this as he actually sees it. Please, Nick, congratulate him when he succeeds in doing that.

      1. Given Professor Turley’s visibility and position, these posts are remarkably courageous and blunt. You overlook: However, I remain amazed that security staff did not raise any alarm over the president corresponding with the Secretary of State over a private email system..

That Sanders and Warren have simply ignored all this, that they have so obsequiously bowed to the raw power behind Hillary in spite of the rank corruption just ballooning up from everything she has ever touched, has got to go down in history as among our country’s most shameful sell outs ever.

        1. Brooklin–I ignored nothing. I continue to stand by my previous comment. A significant portion of the problem is the media’s persistent acquiescence with regard to these crimes, where no one is held to account. The lack of outrage, as demonstrated by JT’s own words downplaying Obama’s role in these outrageous and dangers escapades, emanates from someone who should know better–and, undoubtedly does. JT’s pronouncement that he is willing to give Obama, in particular, a pass with regard to the irreparable harm caused by this security lapse, is especially troubling. That’s a far cry from being courageous and blunt. It’s quite the opposite. Remember, many turn to the opinions of experts, such as JT, to garner some insight into various situations, in the hopes of gaining some wisdom and understanding as to what is unfolding before them. When said “experts” are called upon, and they, instead, soft pedal a serious and grave series of crimes, occurring over a protracted period of time–thereby minimizing the grave importance of this entire debacle–the words brave and courageous don’t come to mind. I hold JT to a higher standard, where I expect to read an honest and forthright opinion as to the gravity of such shenanigans, given his years of legal experience. Yes, I know–I demand far too much.

          1. Outsiders get marginalized; insiders can get things done. If Professor Turley can shed light on subjects but still have a working relationship with the main players, he can still work to effect change.

And, we can work to effect change by contacting our reps on the Hill.

I love outsiders (I have voted for Ron Paul and like elements of Jill Stein’s and Gary Johnson’s platforms) and want them to continue beating their own drum.

            1. There will never be any change, of which you speak, when those anointed with the crown of “legal expert” do nothing more than marginalize and diminish the magnitude of various wrongs committed by our representatives. That is their duty, so to speak–to answer and discuss these actions with a sense of objectivity. That should be the goal. What? Will JT lose his job over speaking the truth and ruffling a few feathers? I assume that he is a tenured professor, and his position is more secure than most. It is precisely why there is no change in the manner in which system operates. I’m sure that JT has his reasons for making excuses for Obama, as I do not doubt that there would be an array of repercussions for doing so within his circle of pals. Perhaps there would be a few less invites to some highly sought after cocktail parties if he actually stated what is evident to all regarding these emails, but that, again, will never bring about a change. Obfuscation of the truth does little more than promote the opposite.

              1. I agree that his posts are more tempered than I would like. The tempered tone juxtaposed to facts emphasizes the issue.

He will not publicly criticize to the degree you would like. It is not his personality. It is not civil and it would not be diplomatic. Raging against the machine would be counter-productive. That he broaches these topics and has an open forum for discussion is enormously helpful to getting the conversation brewing in the nation.

You have no idea who he talks to or the nature of the conversations. He is playing a part in the Game of Thrones. How things are said and what is not said matters far more.

                1. JT, from what I know, is a private citizen–no different from you or me. He is, however, a law school professor and consulted, in various public forums, as to his take on the issues of the day. He’s not running for prom king; this need not be a popularity contest. I don’t believe that it is asking too much of someone, who is constantly consulted about the legal ramifications of a myriad of acts, to speak clearly and unequivocally about abuses and flagrant violations in the system. There is a way to do so that does not involve being uncivil.

                  1. Bam bam and others. Civil? Treat with civility? What wanton hubris and disdain from those who have no idea of civility a follow on comes after morals, values, ethics. To those who would steal in like serpents and deadly insects our Constitutionally mandated Republic? To what purpose civility. They are the enemy. Civil is the back of one’s hand, our disdain, perhaps pity for those who are victimized male and female alike in all colors by their pathetic attempts to rewrite, re frame re define day after day, hour after hour. They stand for nothing they deserve nothing. but contempt.

A Constitutional Republic or a socialist autocracy. Freedom or Slavery. It doesn’t end on November 7th. The Counter Revolution is in full bloom and by the laws and oaths we hold sacred is the right thing to do – every day all days – days without end and without number.

They do not offer a social contract worth accepting and those when done anew require 100 Per Cent agreement. You owe NO allegiance to a shadow government pretending to be what it is not. Just your back and the back of your hand – all the civility they deserve. And those who support them.

Remind your children and friends inn the military of their oath of office. It is that they fear the most. Time to reclaim that which is right and just and honorable and…legal. Our legacy supersedes their failures.

    2. DC has become the wealthiest city in the US. All that city produces are lobbyists, laws and regulations.

The Bay Area complex is the most affluent commuter belt in the United States. As for greater Washington, the sources of value-added are as follows:

      2.4% Manufacturing
      2.9% Wholesale trade
      5.8% Publishing / media / data processing
      20.3% Finance, Insurance, Real Estate
      22.4% Professional and business services
6.2% Education, health care, social assistance
3.4% Arts, entertainment, recreation, food service
      3.6% Miscellaneous private services
10.2% Retail trade, transportation and warehousing, construction, utilities, mining, agriculture
      22.8% Government

      Employment distribution is as follows:

      0.3% Agriculture & forestry
      1.4% Manufacturing
      1.7% Wholesale trade
      7.9% Retail trade
      2.3% Publishing / media / data processing
6.4% Administrative support / waste management & remediation
      3.3% Education
8.7% Health care and social assistance
      7.2% Miscellaneous private services

41.8% Professional, scientific, and technical services; Management of companies and enterprises; Finance, Insurance, Real Estate; Arts, entertainment, recreation, food service; Transportation and warehousing, construction, utilities, mining, [breakdowns not provided]

      19.0% Public employment

    3. DC is truly the swamp Trump wants to drain. Nobody in DC wants that swamp to be drained. Voters don’t understand that. It’s worse than a mafia. They protect their own.

  8. “The White House quickly corrected the President’s comments and said that, while he used the private email, he really did not realize it was not a .gov email. I am willing to accept that account for a man who is incredibly busy.”

You see this is the problem JT; someone with your understanding of human nature and the political institutions of this country, should never assume anyone with the power of the Presidency is telling you the truth. The political class do not deserve an innocent until proven guilty pass. Our trust in government begins with an election and ends with the swearing into office. Everything from that point forward should be to PROVE they’ve honored the oath; not an ASSUMPTION that they have.

  9. How often will we see the ugly photos of Hillary on this blog before the election? There is the one above and the one with her wearing sunglasses and looking at her smartphone.

  10. Hopefully, Johnathon Turley and his colleagues are working behind the scenes to restore law and order. FBI Director Comey & DOJ’s Lynch have destroyed the integrity of the upcoming Presidential elections. I predict if these two lawless individuals are not forced to resign – then our republic will be in serious jeopardy.

  11. No chance of impeachment! Half the country thinks he is doing a great job.

    1. The “people” don’t get to decide on whether to impeach. Our elected reps in House take it up and then if 2/3 vote for impeachment it goes to the Senate, where another 2/3 majority decides. As with Clinton, there are prolly enough votes to impeach Obama in the House of Representatives but not in Senate.

      1. To make it simple impeachment is the same as the Grand Jury deciding if there is a crime to prosecute and the second phase is the Petit Jury that is the actual trial. The difference is it’s a jury of congressionals and not peers.

    2. So half the population now favors corruption! Get rid of them and you get rid of the cancer — and Obama and Hillary.

    3. I don’t think his popularity / job numbers are true. I believe they are much much lower. He is greatly despised for being so evil as is Hillary. They have blood on their hands.

Also many poll numbers are lies.

  12. If he was doing that with the State Department and with Hillary then he was doing it with the others. Other Departments and beyond as well.

Simple logic says investigations should include all branches of Government within the Executive Branch to put it in modern terms. should be examined. No longer a Hillary phenomena alone and the questions follow? With how many? Whom? Where (Inside and outside of Executive Branch, the current State Department, Inside and outside of the entire government and others including outside of the nation.) The statement indicted the entire administration.)

    Where does the dirt stop?

If former co conspirators which is what Obama and Hillary have been termed by this revelation not only how wide spread but what follows in a second eight years?

Mills didn’t flag the issue she flogged it and gave it a potential shape. Long, Deep and Continuous.

  13. Clinton was impeached for lying. Obama should be impeached, too, while there’s still time. Voters are so sick of this corruption, the national press, and the evil establishment, there needs to be accountability beginning now. If voters feel this election is stolen, there will be no end to retribution for a generation to come. Voters simply aren’t going to roll over and play dead anymore, even willing to allow a dictatorship if it means cleaning house in Washington.

    1. If Obama wasn’t impeached for war crimes or protecting war criminals, he will not be impeached for e-mailgate.

      1. He didn’t commit any war crimes. He did (with scant doubt) greenlight the use of the IRS to harass the opposition, and made use of the Criminal Division at the Justice Department to protect the perpetrators.

    2. Sorry, voters don’t care about corruption or the wouldn’t be voting for Hillary.
