Student Is Admitted To Stanford With Essay That Simply Repeated “Black Lives Matter” 100 Times

Stanford_University_seal_2003.svgEvery student can recount the stress and work that went into their college essays.  Indeed, some people hire advisers on the preparation of these essays.  For Ziad Ahmed however repetition was the key.  Asked by Stanford University to respond to “What matters to you, and why?”, his answer was to repeat the expression #BlackLivesMatter” 100 times.  He got in.

The senior high school student from New Jersey is not African American.  The school was enthusiastic in its letter: “Everyone who received your application was inspired by your passion, determination, accomplishments, and heart . . . You are, quite simply, a fantastic match with Stanford. You will bring something original and extraordinary to our campus – a place where you can learn, grow, and thrive.”

Ahmed said that he was “stunned” to get in and there are probably a few less successful applicants that were a bit ticked by his approach to the essay.

The Bangladeshi-American has an impressive resume, which includes attending the White House Ramadan dinner and an internship for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.  He has also done a Ted Talk.

I guess however is that a slew of hashtag essays will rapidly lose its cache with Stanford.

  1. I would be furious that this privileged little princeling was admitted in the first place and on top of that submitted a facile stunt “essay.” Mandarin University continues to lose respect.

  2. He’s a celebrity kid. Universities love celebrity kids. Obviously he’s intelligent and I imagine he’ll do well. However, I wonder if he’d been accepted if he’d written (over and over again) ‘All lives matter’ or ‘Pro life’?

Looks like I’m going to Harvard!

  4. “There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home.” Dorothy

  5. Keep a list of name of collegians who have soiled themselves in the media. If ever I see their resumes cross my desk, I’ll reject their applications without comment.

  6. Gosh, when I was accepted to Harvard in 1965, my letter merely said, “Congratulations. You have been accepted.” It wasn’t a legacy admission, since I was the first person in my family to go to college, but I may have filled the southwest Texas Jesuit school boy quota for that year.

  7. How grand. Stanford will now applaud bad derivative writing in its application essays.

If he had written, “All work and no play make Jack a dull boy” 100 times, it would have been seen for what it was – unbalanced. What kind of stable, responsible, sincere student writes “#Black Lives Matter” 100 times on an application essay to Stanford? What kind of critical thought did he apply to the question? How much respect did he pay the institution? He didn’t even come up with his own Twitter hashtag phrase; he just copied a slogan someone else created. And, again, the extremist Leftists who have taken over higher learning enabled and applauded such behavior. If such a prank was not rewarded, but given the rebuke it deserved, then this kind of spoiled, inarticulate, entitled behavior would reduce.

    1. ” What kind of critical thought did he apply to the question? How much respect did he pay the institution? ”

This is the kind of thing that some precocious children pull when they have no interest.

My bet is that so long as he has any alternative, Stanford will have to pay him to accept – and he still won’t want to attend.

  8. I’m actually impressed. The kid evaluated the environment at elite universities, took a shot, and hit a bullseye.

  9. This is one smart kid! He gets it: pick a simple message that clearly states a moral position, and make it where it will have the most impact. I expect he will further develop this skill at Stanford.

  10. Stan Ford got kicked out of Ford Motors because he was a nitwit. He went to California and started a school.

  11. Lol!!! Stanford deserves that student.
And most likely Berkeley will be butthurt. You can’t make it up. 👌

    1. Ter ber – the PAC-12 has high academic standards. This might require the other schools to ask Stanford to leave the PAC-12. Closest conference to them is the WAC, but they are full at the moment. Besides, Stanford would just win every year. So, they would have to join the Big 8, Big 10 or Big 12. Still, those leagues are full.

Really, the best they can do is take all their football money away.

        1. JR – cannot read the article because I do not have a subscription. However, I do know the Big 10 and the ACC play weaker schedules than the PAC-12. It has been a complaint of the PAC-12 for several years.

          1. This is an academic ranking of schools in the conferences, so has no relation to sports schedules.

  12. Any wonder why college kids on the news seem like idiots? They actually are!

  13. That’s not an earthquake you’re feeling in northern California. It’s Jane and Leland Stanford Sr rolling in their graves at the thought of how their hard earned money is being used.

    1. I’m sure that at the least they are rolling their eyes. And the kid did not answer “and why?”

    1. My guess is he probably was a sure thing to get in anyway & he wad admitted not because of the essay but in spite of it. Aren’t the essays basically a tie-breaker anyway? There might be less to this story than meets the eye.

  14. Ahmed admits he is a liberal activist. He’s riding on daddy’s coat tails. And he has big following on social media, mostly teenagers. Almost like a cult. During the Obama administration, Ahmed was put on a government watch list. Ahmed posted something or visited a website that got flagged.
