In a remarkable departure from his own Chief Executive, the acting head of the Drug Enforcement Agency Chuck Rosenberg has repudiated the remarks of President Donald Trump that encouraged law enforcement officers to abuse criminal suspects. We previously discussed those irresponsible remarks. While the White House dismissed questions from reporters by saying that the President was just joking, it did not explain why the President would think it was funny to harm suspects or what message such a joke sends to law enforcement after assuring them that “we have your back.” Rosenberg told DEA officers that the President was condoning police misconduct and that he would not.
In his remarks, the President told police not to be “too nice” to suspects:
“Like when you guys put somebody in the car and you’re protecting their head, you know, the way you put their hand over? Like, don’t hit their head, and they just killed somebody — don’t hit their head. I said, you can take the hand away, okay?”
Rosenberg did what the Attorney General, the new FBI Director, and others failed to do. (Sessions reportedly told people it was a joke and defended the President in private). He correctly repudiated the comments and told his law enforcement officers that such abuse would not be tolerated. In a memo to DEA agents, Rosenberg stated:
“The president, in remarks delivered yesterday in New York, condoned police misconduct regarding the treatment of individuals placed under arrest by law enforcement. I write to offer a strong reaffirmation of the operating principles to which we, as law enforcement professionals, adhere. I write because we have an obligation to speak out when something is wrong. That’s what law enforcement officers do. That’s what you do. We fix stuff. At least, we try.”
If the President was joking, this was not funny. We pride ourselves on a professional cadre of law enforcement officers who are trained to protect suspects as well as the public. It is a hard and often thankless job. The President belittles those men and women by joking about slamming the heads of suspects into police cruisers. Having worked with and represented law enforcement officers for years, I was disheartened to hear the audience laugh at the comments. What the President was joking about was the violation of the constitutional rights of suspects as well as the violation of governing statutory and regulatory standards. For police, it is like joking with a conference of doctors about not worrying about harming or killing patients. Moreover, such comments make the work of our police more difficult, not easier, in working with the public and potential witnesses or victims.

Waterboarding and other forms of torture so beloved of sadomasochists ARE effective…at eliciting false confessions, which was probably the primary reason for its implementation in the first place.
In addition to the testimony of countless professional interrogators (and psychologists), it doesn’t take a genius to understand that if someone is torturing you, you’re going to tell him (or her) whatever it is he or she wants to hear, in order to stop your being tortured.
It does, however, take someone who hasn’t him- or herself been so brutalized along the way as to try to rationalize (it’s effective, they have it coming, etc.) the infliction of physical and mental pain on a helplessly captive human being.
Unfortunately, such brutalized and brutalizing people constitute a significant percentage of the US and other countries’ populations, and they are very refractory to gaining insight into the real source of their fear and loathing. This is why they embrace so enthusiastically an authoritarian leader who will both protect them from the consciously hated other and allow them vicarious enjoyment of their common enemy’s “well-deserved” suffering at the hands of their Protector and his minions.
Erdogan and Duterte are two spectacularly obvious contemporary examples of such “protectors,” and the more Trump talks and his supporters defend his authoritarian pronouncements, the more in common with Erdogan and Duterte he seems to have.

The big question is how does Trump take it all. Perhaps it’s only about taking it all for him. He hasn’t illustrated otherwise. I think a lot of people might believe the stock market is creating a type of bubble, but have you analyzed the amont of money placed in the stock market from outside the US? The US stock market is a haven for safer investment than seen in many parts of the world.
I will say that I get a bit nervous when the market gets so high so fast. But I deal with that risk because the profits are worth it and I stay very diversified.

I believe most employees respect their responsibility to be apolitical on the job, but we have seen what happened with the IRS and other government organizations so I believe all those involved should be fired and some sent to jail. I assume if you want government workers to do their jobs apolitically you agree with my desires.

Or attending the Diversity Day Picnic? My family has a construction company and no employee sits around watching porn or soap operas or anything else, because they have effective managers who are there every day, making sure each employee is efficiently working at his or her job. The difference is that federal managers, who have the tools to monitor their employees, and remove the non-producers, don’t want to bother because it is easier to look the other way. At my agency we have a Director who is a member of the Senior Executive Service (SES). He put his receptionist on a GS-13 position description, which is a professional grade reserved for senior LEOs, attorneys, and the like. Plus she works at home. A receptionist! But whose fault is that? Hers? Her co-workers? None of them have the authority to allow for such an abuse. But the SES are the Federal version of Caesar’s wife, above suspicion and impossible to remove. Yes, it’s easier to blame civil service employees for everything that’s wrong with the government, but the truth is, the real problem in the federal government is arrogant, incompetent management.
You might be right about management, but I don’t think I could work as an employee where the expectation is laziness and sloppyness.

This wasn’t a statistical survey so I don’t think it was dozens out of a million.
I do however like your correct emphasis on management and I am sure your company does an excellent job. The federal government is just too big for appropriate management. Some companies like Gore-Tex (I think that is the company) will create a new division or something like that every time the numbers get too great. Large numbers are the reason the military is divided up the way it is.

There are some real bad ones and some real good ones. And, like everything, many in the middle of those two poles. But, there was an all out assault on cops under Obama. I have a kid I mentored. He just got his criminal justice degree and when he started, planned on being a cop, He wants no part of that now. Police departments are reaching crisis levels in trying to recruit. That’s how you end up w/ a Somali whack job cop shooting a blonde woman in her pajamas across the body of his partner.
Nick, I totally agree. My brother-in-law worked the streets with probationary rookies, to see how they reacted in real world situations. The ones who didn’t have the temperament were washed out. Of course, they were white guys, so they could be removed if they were the wrong fit for the job. I figured the Somali was a P.C. special who was pushed through the academy regardless of any misgivings by his instructors. He was apparently a ‘nervous nellie’ who was afraid of his own shadow and spooked when the lady walked up to the car. A real tragedy for her family…..an unfortunate victim of affirmative action and Minneapolis’s devotion to P.C., which has no place on a police force when you’re making split-second, life and death decisions.

The deceased woman was a good person. She was trying to report a sexual assault in an alley. The cop was unbelievably incompetent and should not have been issued a badge and gun. The taxpayers of Mineapolis will pay for it, but it won’t bring her back to her children.

I’m not familiar with the history of the ATF, but I know that it is a much older agency than the DEA, and was, for most of its history, a part of the Treasury Dept. Which suggests to me that the mission, at least with respect to alcohol and tobacco, was to make sure the federal government was collecting the lucrative taxes on alcohol and tobacco. I agree with you that the two agencies should be combined. I’m sure they both have functions that could be eliminated, streamlined, or better left to the states.
