The Face of White Privilege? ACLU Under Fire After Bowing To Criticism Of Its Use Of An Image Of A White Child In Its Promotional Campaign

4387992700000578-4820904-image-a-116_1503602098005downloadThe American Civil Liberties Union is apologizing for featuring the picture of this child at part of is promotional campaign after outraged supporters said that the image rekindled fears of Charlottesville and represented “white privilege.”  Rather than stand by a beautiful picture of a child in an ACLU shirt with and American flag, the ACLU effectively confessed to being guilty of white privilege in allowing such an image on its site.  I have been lifetime supporter of the work of the ACLU but the organization has been losing its once tight grip on core principles.  Members have been demanding that the organization drop its color-blind approach to free speech and refuse to represent some unpopular groups. The ACLU conceded that it would decline to help groups like those in Charlottesville because they were seen with guns — despite the fact that those guns were entirely legal.

The campaign was meant to feature pictures of toddlers in onesies saying “Free Speech” along with the caption: ‘This is the future that ACLU members want.”

The American Civil Liberties Union was blasted by social media users for its tweet of a photo of a white baby wearing a 'Free Speech' onesie along with the caption: 'This is the future that ACLU members want' (above)

Temple Professor Nyasha Junior was one of the first to object with

Leftists were furious over the post because they believed it endorsed white supremacy.

Others added their own images:

Given the open deeply disturbing responses to the simple picture of a white child, one would have hoped that the ACLU would have responded unbowed and unequivably by saying that it was the responses and not the picture that were racist.  Instead, it actually issued a cringing thank you for a lesson on its white privilege issues:

  1. If I were a hard core cynic I’d be tempted to believe this kind of crap was a staged destraction to divert attention from serious issues–like that the concentration of wealth and power among the .01% (the 1% of the 1%) is greater than ever despite a 2-term black president and lots of white people apologizing for having been born.

About 20 years ago a doctrinaire communist I knew (he was the kind of communist who read Das Kapital cover to cover and adored it) said affirmative action was a ruling class plot to divide the working class. I’m no longer sure he was paranoid.

  2. PC eating its own. Or, is it more like the boss in Cool Hand Luke getting the ACLU mind right.

Regarding the ACLU and their “no guns” policy. Let me say not only were all the guns legal, although attacked, NOT ONE ROUND WAS FIRED!!

  3. Professor Turley wants common sense to prevail…….it Left the boardroom,
The universities, and the streets long ago.

  4. The flag has come to represent violence, unhinged incompetence, racism, a long history of destruction and exploitation outside of its borders. The photo would have been better if the baby were holding the hand of another child of another ethnicity and gender.

    1. Doglover:

There you go with quotas again.

No, we don’t have to analyze every picture for the correct number of minorities.

It is this mindset that drove middle America to vote for Trump. Keep going on this PC path and you will see Trump elected for a second term.

    2. Doglover, you should consider relocating to a country whose flag you could honor.

  5. I always thought the ACLU was supposed to be non-political in their statements and outlook. But now, their leadership is rudderless and without A CLUe.

  6. See the historical work of Wm. Donohue. The ACLU was always a lawfare organization whose defense of ‘civil liberties’ was incidental. It’s just gotten worse and worse over time. The one thing you can say about them is that they’re not a scam like the $PLC.

  7. “The fear is that the current leadership is taking this esteemed organization into a new and more ambiguous direction.”

The fact is that the current leadership has turned this once esteemed organization into yet another radical left anti-American mouthpiece.

There. Fixed that for you, JT.

  8. There was a time when the kid with the flag absolutely had to be Black, or Indian, or Asian, or some other minority. The pendulum is swinging past the mid point to argue that perhaps the kid in the photo with the flag, should be white; or any color for that matter as the ‘minority’ argument, in this case, is fast losing its credibility. Nothing neutralizes one extreme like the other.

  9. Semiotic dementia: The belief that words, images and signs cause, change or control events occurring in the external reality of non-ego; such that, whosoever causes, changes or controls the signs thereby causes, changes or controls the course of events occurring in the external reality of non-ego.

The standard treatment for semiotic dementia is David Steinberg’s comedy album, Booga! Booga!

  10. The ACLU has become a chickensh+t organization. I used to support them, even though I often didn’t agree with their lawsuits. Now, they are gutless wonders.

          1. David Benson – if it cannot be done by email or a phone call it cannot be done. They are not going to change; I call Jeffy Flake’s office and Johnny McCain’s office about once a month to complain. My best response was when I told them it was not in the best interest of Arizona for McCain to run again. There was an audible gasp on the other side. You would have thought I had spoken heresy. He and his staff and overfilled war-chest did not hear me.

            1. But the ACLU might.

Civil liberties are a birthright inherited from the English.

              1. David Benson – right now the ACLU has no intestinal fortitude. I am boycotting them.

              2. David, The ACLU used to protect First Amendment rights. I was a supporter even when the ACLU protected groups that I objected to such as the Nazi’s. It had large donors and board members. Sometimes the donors and board members become one and the same. The donors like the lobbyists in Washington push for their own agendas and that started happening to the ACLU years ago.

  11. This article shows that even among liberals, one can never be liberal enough.

    1. ACLU is only for liberals?

I suppose civil liberties might be considered a liberal concept, although in Britain the concept is far older than what is called liberalism.

      1. I suppose civil liberties might be considered a liberal concept

Might be but not likely for progressivism masquerading as liberal. Classical liberal certainly

        1. Olly, David forgets that the word liberal used to be used in the classical way, classical liberalism, a completely different type of liberalism than we see today. The word liberal became so distorted that Bill Buckley started to capitalize the word Liberal and used a lower case “l” for that denoting classical liberalism.

The word Liberal today is rapidly assuming the definition of “fool”.

  12. Hilarious! And there are still stupid white people who vote for Democrats??? This is what race-baiting and identity politics hath wrought! And the Democrats are the ones who wrought it!

    1. Squeeky, can you can write a poem that defines Liberalism with a capital L and liberalism (classical) so that those without understanding of history can see what fools they are being made of by today’s Liberalism?

      1. Yes, Allan. One day, but not today. I did not get any sleep last night and I am sooo totally brain dead. I am going to try to nap for a few minutes this morning. And, thank you for asking!!!

  13. Too bad they didn’t stage several children of various backgrounds. I don’t see a First American in the pix.

      1. Nope. The First Americans continue to have a rotten deal, treaty rights violated, even here in Washington state where the situation is far less bad than elsewhere in the West. Some visibility would help.

    1. First American that didn’t happen until 15 years after Cristoforo Colombo from a place thatr wasn’t yet Italy, and a crew full of mostly Spaniards following directions provided by Portuguese Fisherfolk who in turn followed directions by some Irish and in their turn followed some Norwegians who had made some slight contact with the indigenes or indigenous inhabitants of a continent without a name but the sequence became the english word indian of no connection to the same word defining the indigenous population of Indus River area which became Indian indigenous by wandering and expanding as did the inhabitants of what became North, Central and South America. Most of whom used their languages term for ‘the people’ or in our language “the humans.’

So while we are getting all racist in our comments at least get it right. Columbus Discovered America is three falsehoods in one one three word sentence.

As to the native population it is thought they began somewhere in the now African Continent and graduall spread over the EurAsian Continent and used a then existing land bridge to wander into the Americas Continents Who descended from whom is a DNA question since there are no written records

But as for the ACLU to bad they don’t at least remember the first letter of their apparently defunct title and just where were these valiant legal warriors when ‘probable cause’ in the Patriot Act became ‘suspicion of?’

I had occasion to converse with one with the odd legal question only to be told I didn’t qualify for their attention although I was a. American Citizen, b. it was a civil rights question, and avoided them ever since.

Can’t help with DNA but if you can diagram that first Spencerian sentence you would gain more respect. than the legal version of a mobocracy.

As for me They are A CLU-eless group who have wandered far beyond the geographical area described above and become irrevocably lost in the effort. They are as American as the foreign ideology they seem to prefer. BUT they have seen one of their own elected to be President who will be remembered for……. something.

      1. Your understanding of the archeology and anthropology is deficient. The First Americans came from Beringia.

Long and long before Christopher Columbus.

        1. David, you are right and that was suspected to have happened over 10 millenia ago.

I think their lease ran out.

          1. allan, I would not waste time on a retard who doesn’t know the difference between abortion laws and fetal homicide criminal statutes. I have seen some stupid comments in my 5 years here, but David B Benson may have made the most stupid comment yet in that thread the other night. Even the other liberals stayed away from him on that w/ no back up for Mortimer Snerd.
