HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Happy New Year to all of our blog community from around the world. As I mentioned yesterday, I get to celebrate both New Years and my anniversary on the 31st. Leslie and I eloped in Alexandria Virginia on New Year’s Eve in 1997 — making this our 20th anniversary. (We disagree on the number for celebrating since I count the 8 years that we dated — making this our 28th).  I make our traditional soup on New Year’s: The Bowl of The Wife of Kit Carson Soup. It is a hot Turkey soup that my father Jack Turley would make every New Year and was believed to be a cure for any hangover.

As has been our tradition on this blog, with the start of 2018, I thought I would wanted to share our annual “State of The Blog” statistics.

It has been a great year on the blog. Thanks to all of our regulars and particularly our our talented and popular weekend team of guest bloggers: Mike Appleton, Kimberly Dienes, Cara Gallagher, Larry Rafferty, and Darren Smith. 1. No, I did NOT pass out drunk at a New Year Eve’s party! I was tired, and merely fell asleep on the couch. Sooo, if anybody says I was drunk, they are lying bigly! I did have a small, yet indeterminate, number of drinks, but I was always in full control of my senses. Sooo full of control that I was able, sheerly as a matter of scientific curiosity, to find the recipe for the Bowl of the Wife of Kit Carson soup! Voila:

2 lbs leftover turkey, or 2 whole boneless, skinless chicken breasts
    1 quart chicken broth
    Pinch of dried leaf oregano
    1 cup cooked rice
1 cup cooked garbanzo beans (dried or well drained canned)
1 ripe avacado, peeled and cubed
1chilpoltle chile, packed in adobo, minced, (or 1 small can chopped green chiles)
whole pepper corns (about 15 or to taste)
4 to 6 ozs Monterey Jack cheese, cubed
    4 sprigs cilantro (optional)

    Preparation

If using turkey, then cube the turkey. Place the turkey or chicken breasts in a pot with the broth. If using chicken that has not been pre-cooked, then bring to boil, then turn off the heat, cover and poach for 12 min. Cut up chicken and return to broth. Add oregano, pepper corns, rice, gabanzo beans, and chiles. Quickly heat soup again to a quick boil, then ladle it into deep soup bowls. Garnish with a cilantro sprig, cheese cubes (to taste), and avacado (to taste). This dish may be made a day ahead, but don’t add the avacado or cheese until reheating the soup for serving. The chipolte chile flavor will intensify overnight and the dish may seem hotter. For a more intense flavor, add some adobo from the peppers.

OK, sooo what single person has all this stuff sitting around??? I maybe have a baggie of leftover Christmas turkey from my Mom, but it’s frozen. Rice, yes. Pepper corns and oregano, yes. But that’s it.

Does Kroger have it in a can??? Not that I need it or anything, but I am just going to use a can of Chicken Tortilla soup I have, because it sounds really good to have on very cold day. I’ll add the oregano and pepper corns to it.

  2. This month would be a good time period to have a topic done here at the blog on Thurgood Marshall. Juan Williams did a book on Thurgood titled: Thurgood Marshall–American Revolutionary. Juan’s book focuses on Thurgood’s role as an attorney when he was moving about the South doing civil rights cases and facing danger every day. Another book by Roger Goldman, Professor of Law at Saint Louis University School of Law, written with David Gallen, is focused on the cases Thurgood wrote while on the bench. These are two good books which our bloggers might enjoy.

On the down low, if your saliva (as “a bit of a Finn”) has too many markers indicating ancestral “oppressor” lineage- which has consequences at this blog- you could beat the test with swarthmoremom’s.

  8. Paul Schulte, you can always up your blog count by

    Abuse de blog.

    I demonstrate below:

    1. David Benson – I could not in good conscience do that. Besides, I think Darren would take the extra ones out.

      1. I can neither confirm nor deny Schulteacher’s conscience. (Abuse seven).

  9. Happy New Year, Professor Turley. Thank you for your work. Bright blessings to you and your family and to all of your blog readers.

  10. You do know that Bowl of the Wife of Kit Carson is the creation of Sam Arnold and The Fort Restaurant in Denver. I have been known to cook a turkey just to have the left overs to make that soup. What do you use for green chillis ?

  11. I am clearly going to have to ramp up my game to be No. 1. Congrats, Linda.

      1. enigma – it happens 3 or 4 times over the year. I am always in the top five somewhere. But you never know when the 1000 clicker starts clicking. 😉

    1. It was an honor just to be nominated given the oppressor lineage attributed to me by No. 2.
