Durbin Contests Trump’s Denial of “Shithole” Comment As Press Search For Other Members [UPDATED]

donald_trump_president-elect_portrait_croppedPresident Donald Trump is denying that he referred to Haiti and African countries as “shithole countries” in a meeting with members of Congress.  Clearly someone is lying and it should not be hard to determine who.  One of the members in the meeting, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), says that Trump is lying and that he clearly made the statement.  The question now is recollection of some of the other people in the room, including Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.).

Update: Sen. Graham has now issued a statement that appears to confirm that the President said this and says that he
directly challenged the President after his comment.  Another member has said that Graham told him that President did say it.

Durbin says that the deeply disturbed words — and other such language — was used by the President. He says that the President “said these hateful things” “repeatedly.”  He refers to “vile” comments being used that shocked the members.  Some of Durbin’s comments are less compelling like his objection to the term “chain migration” as offensive to African Americans who came to the United States in chains. Trump reportedly scoffed at that comparison as “a good line.”  The issue is really the use of the “shithole” reference and Trump’s denial of using any “derogatory” language.

Allies of the President have wondered why it took 15 hours for him to deny using the offensive language. Other allies like Peter King have issued supportive statements for the President.  However, a former RNC Chairman is now calling Trump a “racist.”

The published comments have caused an international outcry as press are searching for these other members who can help establish the truth. The optics could obviously not be worse going into the Martin Luther King weekend.

The language is separate from the merits of the debate over whether the United States should shift to a policy of taking the most skilled immigrants as do many other countries.

There are a couple of curious stories following the outcry, which includes the denunciation from the United Nations.  One story says that a couple of members said that they “could not recall” whether the President said such a thing. If a President called all of Africa and Haiti a “shithole,” it would stick in the mind of most people.  Yet, despite Graham saying that he directly challenged the President on the use of the language, Sen. Cotton and Sen. Perdue has said that they simply do not recall.

Another curious story out of the White House is that the President is delighted by the controversy and was taking “a victory lap” last night when the story exploded.

  1. There has to be a more eloquent way of saying —- hole countries. It’s not so much what you say but how you say it. There are 7 billion people in the world. Why don’t we envite them all to our party. Won’t that be grand!

  2. Reblogged this on The Inquiring Mind and commented:
Turley looks at Trump’s shithole countries remark and makes some useful observations.

However, then the racists and Trump trolls piled in with comments on the thread.

It would seem that there’s a very evil spirit abroad in America right now. Given licence by the nasty bully residing at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

    1. Alternatively, President Trump has forced the ‘drama is our oxygen’ crowd much needed and well overdue grown-up truths. We watch as they grapple with real world stuff. Melting down and blaming the messenger.

Growing up and facing realties is just plain hard – as I often tell my 10 year old.

    1. Now using that rag as reference really ruined my day. If 430 S. Washington is the Shitehole of the country then NYT is the shitehole of The Party’s Collective.

  3. I find it rather disturbing when senators are in a room listening to the POTUS speak, they do not recall what he said. Unbelievable.

    1. I don’t. Ever sar in on a meeting? Can you recall every single thing down to the syllable the principal said? No you can’t.

On top of that you are stupid. Know why? Because you can’t see this whole thing for the set up that it was. MLK day is Monday. The Democrats unleashed this on Friday to gen up anger on a day in which we are supposed to celebrate Dr. King.

Every Democrat ought to be called out on this starting with you Carterbo. Therefore, you’ve been called out.

      1. “Patriot: the person who can holler the loudest without knowing what he is hollering about.”

        – Mark Twain

        (Funny how things haven’t changed!)

      1. John – there is a thing called misremembering. Your brain is always on alert to keep you safe however it only uses part of its superpowers to do that. You ever play telegraph where a word is passed orally around a circle. Sometimes, maybe a couple of times, what the person heard was not what they repeated to the next person. They misremembered.

  4. Durbin! Get a turbin!
Its time for Durbin to have a turbin.
Fat kids, skinny kids, kids who climb on rocks….
    Durbin snots, charter tots…
Even kids with chicken pox… say
    Dubin! Get a Turbin!
    Before you fall on Fox!

  5. We all come from some other country that was a shithole, and together we fought and died for the country that Trump will make it a great country again for the rich and entitlement of their class.

  6. This is a really cool story – about an American couple who came to Haiti to adopt a child, realized the problems with Aid groups and institutions and wound up staying and enabling the parents to support themselves and their kids.

  7. So Durbin and others don’t like President Trump’s choice of words. The one word that none of them have bothered to tackle is why. Why would or should we allow immigrants to come into this country in the first place? How about getting past his choice of words and ask him what he meant?

The issue of immigration has become so politicized that we’ve lost any reasonable understanding of the purpose for immigration. We cannot even agree on what should be expected of an immigrant once they get here. Is it wrong to be concerned that we are fundamentally transforming our culture in a way that diminishes the security of our rights?

I still believe this statement by Teddy Roosevelt to be the best on what we should expect from immigrants:

In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American…There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag… We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language… and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.

  8. Several key points here:

    – What are Democrats trying to hide by brewing up this as a story on a Friday before MLK Jr’s birthday?

    – If Trump said it, it isn’t an inaccurate statement. There’s a reason people are literally risking their lives to get to America and it isn’t that their home nation is so amazing they’ll stop at nothing to get away from it.

    – Is Jeff Flake annoying or what?

And for all of you boohoo’ing croc tears that Trump may have called some country a ****hole, I ask, have you ever been to places like that? I certainly have. There are countries in this world in which open sewage systems are used. In an African nation I visited back in 2015, I saw a guy running a sewage pumping truck. (These are common in many, many countries). He climbed on top of the storage tank to see how much you know what was in there. It was at night and he was using a flashlight. The flashlight fell into who knows how many days or weeks of accumulated human waste. What did he do? Reached in, wiped it off on his shirt, and went on about his business.

Despite a generation or two of Americans being fed this stupid intellectual diet of equivalency among all nations, I’m sorry, some nations are truly dumps and it’s about time we called them out as such. In most of these places the reason they are dumps rests with whatever tinpot dictator runs the show.

So good on Trump for speaking truth to power! Black Lives Matter – even those that live in ****hole nations.

    1. Yeah, I’ve been in places like that… Camden, NJ, Detroit, MI, N Phila, Baltimore, MD, Bronx, NY, New Orleans, LA, Los Angeles, CA… trump’s supposed to be above name calling, he needs a keeper.
He’s a national embarrassment… the Entire world is laughing at the US… even shit hole countries.

When will Trump learn that the correct way to be racist is not with vulgar one-liners but 3000 word Atlantic articles making the exact same argument.

“America’s Immigration Challenge: Coming to the United States would benefit millions—but policymakers seldom ask whether their arrival would benefit the United States.”

    by (NeverTrumper David Frum)

    1. Yeah. Frum has been writing anti-mass immigration articles for about twenty years, and collectively they have had far less impact than two words by Trump. Frum writes to attract the attention of the ruling elites. They completely ignore him.

      1. I disagree – Trump may tie up the newz cycle for a day or so, but it is Frum and his merry band of intellectuals who have influence on actual policy which is crafted by the ruling elites.

      2. Without immigration, and a low birth rate, attributable to low U.S. wages and massive financial insecurity, the result will be fewer workers, a situation that jeopardizes Social Security. One segment of the ruling class – the Koch’s and Pete Peterson- want to see Social Security fail.

Looking forward to Norwegian immigration to save the U.S., waiting …and waiting…and waiting….

  10. As usual, SqueeKKKy just Makes Stuff Up, this time about so-called out-of-wedlock children:
    for starters but also

It seems to be the case that single parenting is most common among African Americans, but these statistics do not give the full story; see the prior links. Also note that the statistics for the USA are in the same range as for many countries in Europe. Those have negligible numbers of residents with direct Sub-Saharan African descent.

I conclude that SqueeKKKy is another of all to many Americans who pay no attention to the Book of Matthew and, instead, kick the poor and downtrodden when they are down in easy booting range.

          1. Given the verbiage about the sanctity of marriage, the religious right is failing. They have more divorces than political liberals.
The highly religious clerk in the Bible Belt who refused the marriage license for a gay couple, was on her 4th marriage.
Then, there’s the family values Gov. of Missouri, who is in the news this week. And, there’s the married Tim Murphy, the pro-birth conservative, who encouraged his girlfriend to get an abortion. And, there’s the Republican congressman who resigned last month because it came to light that he offered $5,000,000 to his female staff to have his baby.

Apparently, the words in the Bible have more significance to liberals. Liberals vote for politicians who try to help the vulnerable- the people Jesus describes in the New Testament as those deserving of compassion- you know the ones in wheel chairs in the halls of Congress before the Republican politicians started hacking at ACA.
The biggest political sham going is that the Republican Party represents Christianity and is patriotic.

      1. Ken – with the money that Soros has thrown their way BLM probably has their own professional sign shop and ad agency for slogans.

    1. True they could have been referring to Washington DC, San Francisco, Chicago, San Jose California, any number of spitholes but tell me how much time have you spent in the places mentioned. Damn I left out New Jersey and New York City. Detroit for sure goes on the list.

Never mind it doesn’t deter from the Party of Spit holes that he handed them what they asked for a Clean DACA document and they immediately spit on it. I wondered why he made that offer. I thought at the time it was a set up and it was. Pelos*itini Scheismer took it hook line and sinker.

Moral of he story NEVER EVER trust a progressive socialist liberal party member no matte what and that includes their alt left RINO’s who are the right wing of the left. There is nothing they won’t do and they have not moral standards to keep them from doing the same thing over and over and over. Six years to legitimize DACA and they did NOTHING. Now they don’t want them in the back of the bus but are tossing them under the bus then alternating reverse and forward.

Want to find a real spit hole. Where ever they are living.

    1. Da hookers name is Stormy Daniels. Mrs T rump has every right to look angry that there was another and another hooker after da marriage.

  11. I don’t know if he said it or not. Clearly he did not espouse those words in public. As to sensitive Dick. He needs to keep his mouth shut. He should speak to the President directly if he feels that he was offended. Where we’re his comments when Linden was in town or when. Agnew prowled the streets of Baltimore at night. It is pathetic that our President has to conduct business a long with such back stabbing panty waists.

I think Durban needs to be reminded of HIS conduct while on retreat to a certain West Virginia property.

PS. The country mentioned……..IS a shit hole.
