California DMV Surpasses One Million Driver’s Licenses For Undocumented Individuals

download-1California reached a milestone recently in its immigration laws: the state has now given over one million illegal or undocumented immigrants driver’s licenses.  Passed in 2013 by sponsor Luis Alejo, Assembly Bill 60  required the California Department of Motor Vehicles to issue driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants as long as they can prove their identity and residence within the state. As of March 31st, some 1,001,000 undocumented immigrants have received licenses.  The state has reached this goal at a time when it is on a collision course with the Trump Administration on immigration enforcement as well as some of its own cities.  The result is rising rhetoric on both sides and an inevitable court fight.

California is not alone.  Some twelve states and the Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico allow undocumented immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses.  One interesting fact from this article: “Undocumented immigrants were free to receive driver’s licenses anywhere in the U.S. until 1993, when California became the first state to restrict access and 45 others followed suit.”

By allowing these individuals to have driver’s licenses, they can obtain insurance and comply with other state regulations.

What do you think? Should there be a bar on driver’s licenses?

  1. i would like to know how many states they can register as RESIDENTS and thereby be able to get a Drivers License AND

THEREBY VOTE IN ANY OR ALL OF THESE STATES???

  2. A driver’s license certifies that one is able to operate a motor vehicle. Should be available to everyone who can.

    1. Should be available to everyone who can.

Everyone? You mean every foreign national in this country should go to our DMV to get a license? Aren’t they allowed to drive in this country using the license from their home country? Damn, no wonder the lines are so long at the DMV. What about those who never got a license from their home country you might ask? Go back and get one. What? I know, I know. That sorta defeats the whole idea of being here illegally. You betcha!

      1. Yes, in most states a foreign driver’s license does not suffice. Remember, in at least Britain and Australia they drive on the *left*. 🙂

  3. The fact that some 1,001,000 undocumented immigrants have received licenses in California readily explains why auto fatalities have exploded by more than 13% in just the last year and why California auto insurance rates have, correspondingly, skyrocketed there as well.

Now, if all these extra fatalities merely involved one set of undocumented immigrants having lethal collisions with other sets of undocumented immigrants, this might actually be a good thing. But that’s not the way things work in California. It’s always the illegal immigrants causing the increase in deaths of the law-abiding citizens in California.

    1. Well, that’s your opinion. My opinion–assuming for argument’s sake that traffic fatalities are actually “exploding” and it’s not just some sh*t you made up–is that people with the same type of cognitive difficulties which you manifest here on an hourly basis have taken to driving in the Golden State.

this is to “but, but posting crazy sh*t all the time doesn’t really make me crazy, does it?” ralphie

      1. Marky Mark Mark – driving the CA freeways is scarier than any ride at Disneyland or Disney World. You are literally taking your life in your hands at 80-90 mph or during rush hours 4-5 mph to 0 mph.

      2. FYI, the National Safety Council’s study showed that in California, traffic deaths rose 13 percent in 2017 over the previous year and rose 14 percent in 2016 over the previous year. And California traffic deaths rose 19 percent over the past two years. The national death toll rose 6 percent during the past year.

    2. Ralph,
The Left wants the debate to be about traffic safety and car insurance and that illegals are good citizens. That’s a million miles from the point. If you woke up in the middle of the night to find an intruder in your kitchen making himself a meal, you wouldn’t be demanding that he says thank you and cleans up after himself.

Mark, David and the whole lot on here that keep whining that people are just making stuff up; how in the hell would they know the difference. Progressivism is all about making stuff up. It certainly isn’t about the rule of law. This entire blog would whither away if it was limited to arguing the law. Instead, laws get broken and people just start making $hit up to justify the ends.

  4. As a part-time Arizonan, soon-to-be full time, this is worrisome. With record numbers of people fleeing California’s grossly-inflated property prices, high taxes, and government invasion into every aspect of one’s life – many of them to Arizona – I’d like to see the state NOT accept CA licenses as the basis for an Arizona license and moreover, domicile.

Want to move from AZ to CA? Take your driving test like it’s your first one, document your citizenship, or prepare to be shipped back across the border.
