MSNBC host Joy Reid is reported on the Daily Beast (where she appears as a columnist) to have reaffirmed her earlier claim that hackers “fabricated” old blog posts to make her appear homophobic. The claim is alarming whether true or false. It true, archiving website The Wayback Machine was either compromised or a party to the deception. If false, Reid has lied to the media in a major story involving her own conduct. The company has issued a denial that it was in any way compromised or responsible for the comments.
The denial is reminiscent of the controversy involving Donna Brazile. We discussed earlier how Brazile, the former chair of the Democratic National Committee and CNN commentator, denied the legitimacy of emails that showed her leaking a question to Hillary Clinton that would be asked verbatim at the CNN downhill event. Brazile was ultimately let go by CNN.
In Reid’s case, she apologized last year for old blog posts in which she mocked then-Republican Gov. Charlie Crist by repeatedly referring to him as “Miss Charlie.” She acknowledged the posts were “insensitive, tone deaf and dumb.”
In the new posts, Reid allegedly wrote gay celebrities like Anderson Cooper and Clay Aiken; defended homophobia by saying “most straight people cringe at the sight of two men kissing… Does that make me homophobic? Probably.” She also said that she did not want to watch Brokeback Mountain because of the gay sex scenes and other similar comments. I have not read the original posts. It is not the alleged homophobic content but the fact of the posts that is most intriguing. As shown by Brazile, lying to the media about such material is lethal (even if the media seemed a tad reluctant to pursue the denials or to confront the other party to the email — Clinton communications director Jennifer Palmieri on her failure to come forward to contradict Brazile in her denial).
Reid’s is quoted as saying initially that “In December I learned that an unknown, external party accessed and manipulated material from my now-defunct blog… to include offensive and hateful references that are fabricated and run counter to my personal beliefs and ideology.” She also described her former blog as “compromised” by unspecified hackers. She also said that she had retained a cyber-security expert.
Reid is now “all in” on the denial and fabrication claim — as is The WayBackMachine. The rest should be easy to confirm or refute.

Here are the specifics:
Internet Archive disputed that its records had been compromised in a blog post on Tuesday. According to the site, it was first contacted in December by Reid’s lawyers, asking it to take down “fraudulent” posts that were “inserted into legitimate content” in the archive of her blog.
“When we reviewed the archives, we found nothing to indicate tampering or hacking of the Wayback Machine versions,” the Internet Archive post said.
Later Tuesday night, NBC representatives relayed the statement from Reid’s outside cybersecurity expert, Jonathan Nichols.
“We discovered that login information used to access the blog was available on the Dark Web and that fraudulent entries — featuring offensive statements — were entered with suspicious formatting and time stamps. The posts included hate speech targeting marginalized communities and Ms. Reid has been explicit in condemning them,” Nichols said in the statement.
It is unclear how the posts to her blog could have been changed without the Internet Archive being manipulated. Nichols did not specify which posts he believed were altered.
Didn’t Anthony Weiner make a similar claim and didn’t we all have a good laugh then?

…the story took another twist yesterday when the Internet Archive, a studious record-keeper, clarified a few things.
This past December, Reid’s lawyers contacted us, asking to have archives of the blog (blog.reidreport.com) taken down, stating that “fraudulent” posts were “inserted into legitimate content” in our archives of the blog. Her attorneys stated that they didn’t know if the alleged insertion happened on the original site or with our archives (the point at which the manipulation is to have occurred, according to Reid, is still unclear to us).
[My note: the website uses web crawlers to collect images of pages on the web at any given point in time – images not text – which are not easily editable. If they were hacked, it should be easy enough to prove. Internet Archives can retrieve images of those pages from an earlier point in time before they were allegedly “hacked” for comparison]
To hear Reid’s lawyers tell it, someone either hacked her blog or the Internet Archive. The claim is not impossible but it is highly, highly suspect — the Internet Archive found no evidence of this and there is no precedent for it. The Internet Archive declined to remove the archives, mostly owing to “Reid’s being a journalist (a very high-profile one, at that).”

My guess is that there are multiple forensic techniques, data back-ups/archives, that can reveal whether the purported homophobic posts were fabricated/altered or indeed attributable to her. And if they can be attributed to her, then this would be another example of the cover-up being worse than the crime. Much easier to work with someone that claims lack of enlightenment going back many years vs. cover-you-ass lying.
