This morning I have a column in the Hill newspaper on my reaction to the disgraceful conduct of Speaker Nancy Pelosi and various Democratic members at the State of the Union address last night. As I tweeted during the address, her conduct tore up more than a speech, but decades of tradition and left any semblance of civility in tatters on the House floor.
Forty-four years ago, I walked on to the floor of the House of Representatives as a new Democratic 15-year-old page from Chicago. I stood and marveled at the beehive of activity on the floor in the People’s House. I can still remember that moment because it forged a bond and reverence that has never weakened for me. As a Democratic leadership page during the speakership of Tip O’Neill, I watched some of the most passionate and important debates of the generation from the Neutron Bomb to civil rights legislation to sweeping national park bills. The country was deeply divided, but both parties maintained the tradition of civility and decorum. I was struck how members, even in the heat of furious debates, would not attack each other by name and followed rigid principles of decorum. They understood that they were the custodians of this institution and bore a duty to strengthen and pass along those traditions to the next generation.
That is why I was (and remain) so offended by this display. I believe that President Trump himself is worthy of criticism for not shaking the hand of Pelosi. I also did not approve of aspects of his speech, including bestowing the Medal of Freedom on Rush Limbaugh in the gallery like a reality show surprise scene. There was much to object to in the address, but presidents often make comments that enrage or irritate speakers.
However, none of that excuses Pelosi. At that moment, she represents the House as an institution — both Republicans and Democrats. Instead, she decided to become little more than a partisan troll from an elevated position. The protests of the Democratic members also reached a new low for the House. Pelosi did not gavel out the protest. She seemed to join it.
It was the tradition of the House that a speaker must remain in stone-faced neutrality no matter what comes off that podium. The tradition ended last night with one of the more shameful and inglorious moments of the House in its history. Rather than wait until she left the floor, she decided to demonstrate against the President as part of the State of the Union and from the Speaker’s chair. That made it a statement not of Pelosi but of the House.
For those of us who truly love the House as an institution, it was one of the lowest moments to unfold on the floor. That is why I argue in the Hill that, if Pelosi does not apologize and agree to honor the principle of neutrality and civility at the State of the Union, she should resign as speaker.
Her actions clearly blatantly demonstrate her narcissistic personality disorder. Her lack of empathy for others was on full display when POTUS introduced so many fine Americans, that she wouldn’t even acknowledge them by looking up toward them.
So now, we all (foreign leaders, etc) get to see what this creature who goes by the name of n. pelosi truly has become – So hyper-sensitive to criticism (of any kind) that she threatens her own party members. Free speech doesn’t exist when it comes to her. Nor most democrats.
What a great example she provide for leadership! HA

She is Queen Monarch over the Dem’s elected to the House. If you ever say anything bad about her governing style, she threatens to withhold any reelection campaign funds. Even worse she will fund a same party opponent. Senator Dianne Feinstein expressed the frustration of many members in saying, “The longer it goes on, the less urgent it becomes. So if it is serious and urgent, send them over. If it is not, do not send it over.” But she and other members were quickly pressured to “correct” their earlier statements by stating the exact opposite and praising the brilliant strategy of Pelosi. It took just a few hours for Pelosi to get House Armed Services Committee Chairman Adam Smith D to say that he “misspoke” and praise her inspired strategy.

The founder of the Republican Party warned that “a house divided against itself, cannot stand”. Real leaders try to “unite” their fellow citizens not divide them. Trump has tried to divide American pitting one group against another group – the worst trait of any leader.
A previous administration (from the same Party of Lincoln) had DOJ Liaison, Monica Goodling, try to purge government employees in the U.S. Department of Justice of LGBT employees and Democrats, even firing federal prosecutors. To avoid criminal prosecution, Goodling revealed this divisive purge to Congress.
Obama, by contrast, although not perfect, tried to unite Americans. This same divisive party then attacked his Christian minister. When that didn’t work, they switched Obama’s defamatory title from “Radical Christian” to “Kenyan Witch Doctor” to “Muslim”.
Pelosi has always been civil to her political opponents and as a staunch Christian claims she doesn’t hate anyone, but she is still human. Maybe Republicans could learn something from her?
Democrats aren’t perfect, sometimes even tone-deaf, but they seem like they try to unite all Americans – real leaders! Not falling for the GOP spin job.

The founder of the Republican Party was not Abraham Lincoln whom you allude to. He was the first elected Republican President but not the first candidate. That was John Fremont in 1856. i understand, i need to go out there in the world and tell that story too. if you are a Western man, than you have all these figures inside of you. Trump exercised his executive authority as any student of the doctrine of separation of powers would attest; honored both a dying man with a civilian medal of freedom and a military one with a general’s star pinned on that same day which incidentally was the best he could do for each man given their service to the country; and never made fun of a paraplegic. He also didn’t call a man who isn’t a racist a “racist.”

The presence of justice requires that bigots like Limbaugh not be awarded the National Medal of Freedom.
