Diss Barr? Trump Returns To Attacking The Justice Department

Despite a public condemnation by Attorney General Bill Barr, President Donald Trump is back tweeting and atacking a wide range of Justice Department attorneys and investigations. That includes the recently resigned prosecutors in the case of Trump associate Roger Stone. These irresponsible tweets continue undermine Barr and magnify the problems for the Administration with both the courts and Congress.

President Trump lashed out this morning in the tweet series below.

In the tweets, he not only insists that the “Everything having to do with this fraudulent investigation is badly tainted and, in my opinion, should be thrown out” but adds that he may sue everyone involved.

Once again, it is difficult to comprehend the meaning, let along the purpose, of such tweets. Nothing can be “thrown out” in the Mueller investigation in that the report is complete and no conviction was based on its findings. Any convictions were the result of separate trials that were based on grand jury and other information made part of those records. As for suing everyone, such lawsuit could be technically filed but would be quickly rejected as frivolous.

Some of us agree with the criticism of the Russian investigation, a criticism that has been reinforced by findings that there was no probable cause for the renewal of the FISA surveillance and there was no collusion with Russia. In addition, the investigations by the Inspector General found considerable and raw bias by key players in the investigation.

That brings us back to the purpose. This is obviously putting Barr in an impossible position, as he stated publicly. Indeed, Barr stated just two days ago, that “I think it’s time to stop the tweeting about Department of Justice criminal cases. I’m not going to be bullied or influenced by anybody … whether it’s Congress, a newspaper editorial board, or the president.” He added “I cannot do my job here at the department with a constant background commentary that undercuts me.”

It would seem like Trump is fully aware that the tweets could be viewed as calling Barr’s bluff, if he thinks it was a bluff. It would seem obvious that this would create pressure on Barr to either resign from his office or resign himself to Trump’s tirades. That would be a huge mistake for Trump, but Trump may still be angry over being publicly criticized. Whatever his intent, the tweets further paint Barr into a corner either by default or design.

Here are the tweets:

  1. If an attorney general tells the president what to do, is he the president?

If an attorney general attempts to deny the president his freedom of speech, is he anti-constitutional and anti-American?

If an attorney general undertakes to undermine a sitting president in an election year, is he a political adversary?

If the attorney general seeks control, is he Mr. Deep Deep State personified?

If Mr. Deep Deep State personified tells the president what to do, has the Deep Deep State reasserted its dominion?

  2. Both can be true….

Barr can operate — as he claims to be capable — independent of Trump’s tweets.

Trump can tweet his opinion — to which he is entitled — without implying that Barr should take any specific action….

“Democrats worried about Trump’s growing strength”

Senate Democrats are privately acknowledging that President Trump will be very tough to beat in November if the economy stays strong and he draws on the substantial advantages of running as an incumbent.

Publicly, Democratic lawmakers are putting on a brave face, but behind closed doors anxiety is mounting over the unraveling of former Vice President Joe Biden’s White House bid and the failure of impeachment to put a dent in Trump’s approval ratings.

Democratic lawmakers, however, were dismayed by signs that Trump’s approval ratings got stronger over the course of the impeachment process, which fired up the GOP base and failed to register as a priority among independents and swing voters — even though a large majority of them agreed with Democrats that new witnesses and subpoenas should have been considered at Trump’s trial.

Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) said he’s surprised that Trump’s conduct, which GOP senators such as Sen. Lamar Alexander (Tenn.) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) have called “inappropriate” and “shameful,” hasn’t had more of an effect on public opinion.

“I think it’s not that things aren’t going well for Democrats, I don’t think that’s the case. I think things are going better for Donald Trump than expected. I would have thought the people of this country would not want someone who lies as president, would not want somebody who demeans others,” Cardin said.

“All these things are just against our values,” he added. “I thought that in time would erode a significant amount of support, and although it has eroded some of his support [it’s] much less than I thought.”

  4. It is staggering why anyone would believe anything from Jeff Bezos footstool: Washington Compost

“Washington Post employees call out owner Jeff Bezos over paper’s pay and benefits in open letter”

More than 400 employees from the Washington Post have signed an open letter to owner Jeff Bezos, calling out the Amazon CEO over pay and benefits policies.

The letter begins with praise for how The Post has thrived under Bezos, and that the staff is “extremely grateful that you stepped in to purchase the Post at a time when the traditional media model was collapsing, and we have given our all to take advantage of the long runway you promised.” In just the past year, the letter says, the Post has doubled online subscriptions and increased traffic close to 50 percent.

But the employees also say not all is right at the Post, which Bezos bought for $250 million in 2013. In the letter, they are asking for “fair wages; fair benefits for retirement, family leave and health care; and a fair amount of job security.”

The employees called out low pay raises, lack of investment in retirement accounts, practices surrounding layoffs, severance and more in the letter.

    https://www.geekwire.com/2018/washington-post-employees-call-owner-jeff-bezos-papers-pay-benefits-open-letter/

    1. Regarding above

“We, the undersigned, have been extremely grateful that you stepped in to purchase the Post at a time when the traditional media model was collapsing, and we have given our all to take advantage of the long runway you promised. In the past year alone, the Post has doubled the number of digital subscriptions and increased its online traffic by more than half; its advertising team has met or exceeded all its targets.

All we are asking for is fairness for each and every employee who contributed to this company’s success: fair wages; fair benefits for retirement, family leave and health care; and a fair amount of job security.

Offering $10 a week in pay increases – or about 0.6 percent of the median salary and less than half the current rate of inflation – is unfair and even shocking from someone who believes democracy dies in darkness.

Refusing to improve retirement benefits is unfair, particularly since you froze the traditional pension. The current retirement plans, including a 1 percent match on our 401(k), suggest that you place little value in your employees’ future financial security.

Pushing for the right to indiscriminately lay off anyone is unfair – and a recipe for future discrimination against older employees and minorities.

Further cutting severance for people who face layoffs or whose job has been outsourced is unfair, particularly since management has already won the right to drastically cut severance for people who are let go for cause.

Demanding that laid-off employees waive their legal rights to receive severance payments is an extreme demand and an ominous one – particularly in light of the Post’s mixed record on fair treatment for women, racial minorities and older employees.

The Post is not just any business venture. But even if it were – this would not be the way to show that you value your employees.

Please show the world that you not only can lead the way in creating wealth, but that you also know how to share it with the people who helped you create it.”

        REGARDING MR. PINGBACK

The above commenter, known here as ‘Carolyn’ is really a man we shall call ‘Mr Pingback’.

Mr Pingback is a militant Trump supporter, anti-abortion activist and outspoken advocate for orthodox Catholism.

Mr Pingback imagines himself a daring rebel for bashing Jeff Bezos, owner of Amazon, the death star of corporations.  Bezos also owns The Washington Post, a newspaper so hated by conservatives that Donald Trump would shut it down if he could.

Donald Trump’s one legislative achievement was his generous tax cut to big corporations and wealthy individuals.  One could call that tax cut a kickback to the Koch Brothers for their support Republican candidates.

But Jeff Bezos, more than anyone, benefited from Trump’s Tax Cut.  Amazon, the death star of companies’ also benefited.  Yet most readers of The Washington Post believe that Bezos should pay more in taxes.

Most readers of The Washington Post believe Amazon workers should have a right to organized bargaining.  Many would say that Amazon should be broken up by Anti-trust action.  But Trump supporters tend to be anti-union.  So ‘who’ is Mr. Pingback advocating for??

Honestly Mr. Pingback is no intellectual.  He hasn’t really sorted through all the conflicts here.  Instead he is what’s known as a ‘political fringe character’; someone unconcerned with the details of issues.  In that regard he typifies most Trump supporters.

  5. Bizarre: Justice Department Investgating Guiliani While Using Rudy As An Investigator

Attorney General William P. Barr faced criticism from congressional Democrats and former Justice Department officials when he acknowledged last week having created an “intake process in the field” to accept Giuliani’s information, which seems designed to damage Biden’s political prospects as he seeks the Democratic nomination for president. Barr said at that time that the department had an “obligation to have an open door to anybody who wishes to provide us information that they think is relevant.”

Taking information from Giuliani is particularly fraught for the department because the president’s personal lawyer is under investigation by federal prosecutors in Manhattan in a case that has led to campaign finance charges against two of Giuliani’s associates, Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman. The pair helped Giuliani try to conduct investigations in Ukraine and lobbied for the ouster of Marie Yovanovitch, the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine. Prosecutors have in recent weeks contacted witnesses and sought to collect additional documents in that case.

Separately, federal prosecutors in Chicago have a long-standing case against a Ukrainian gas tycoon accused of bribery, Dmitry Firtash, who they suspect of having significant ties to Parnas and Fruman. And federal prosecutors in Cleveland have been investigating Ihor Kolomoisky, a Ukrainian oligarch, for possible financial crimes. He has sparred publicly with Giuliani.

  8. These irresponsible tweets continue undermine Barr and magnify the problems for the Administration with both the courts and Congress.

They are neither irresponsible or undermining the Attorney General. This is a citizen of this country speaking out about the fraudulent origins of the Mueller investigation and the fruit that fell from that poisonous tree. He’s saying what millions of Americans haven’t had a voice to say. He’s communicating with them and it works.

As for Barr, Trump is not going to intimidate him to do anything he doesn’t want to do. I actually believe it works to Barr’s advantage to appear to be at odds with the President. Barr and Durham are doing their thing and this social media stuff is keeping the workings of the deep state front and center, so when the findings drop, it will prove the President was right all along.

    1. This is a citizen of this country speaking out about the fraudulent origins of the Mueller investigation
      _______________________________________________

The origins of the Mueller investigation was that Trump hired
      him.

        1. The Mueller investigation was just one phony Kayfabe storyline after another.

Take for example the Flynn story that he lied to the FBI. It turns out 3 years later that Flynn did not lie and everybody involved knew he did not lie. And yet Trump pretended to fire Flynn because of it, and then Trump pretended to pressure Comey to “let it go” and Comey pretended to refuse to “let it go” . Then after months and months of investigating this nothing-burger Mueller charges Flynn and Flynn admits to lying in court. Then it drags on in court for 2 more years until everybody admits that Flynn had not lied.

The whole storyline was a phony performance to fool the rubes in the stands. Everybody knew it was phony. Trump, Comey, Flynn, Mueller and his band of phony investigators all knew that Flynn had not lied and yet went thru the motions of making it real for the viewing audience watching.

            1. President Trump’s real trick was getting Obama’s CIA/FBI to open Crossfire Hurricane and lie to the FISA court. Brilliant!
              ______________________________________
It may seem lucky to a moron but it is all part of the same phony kayfabe stupidity designed to fool rubes like you.

The damage done by the FBI was all done to the Clinton campaign. The FBI could have done considerable damage to the Trump campaign but did none. All the leaks were directed against Hillary.

Crossfire Hurricane and ying to the FISA court had zero effect on the election but it did convince morons to ignore the true fact that the FBI helped Trump get elected.

And yes Mr Obama got a nice hefty tax cut from Mr Trump so he got paid handsomely for his help as did all the wealthy owners of the MSM outlets for their help.

  9. That’s a good thing until the known dirty cops and other officials are brought to trial. An apt and needed reminder not to sweep dirt under the rug until it becomes a Hollyweird fiasco.

  10. “This is the deep state being exposed. These people do not want accountability,” Chaffetz said on Tuesday. “There are about 110,000 people at the Department of Justice, roughly 10,000 of them are attorneys. There is one key thing that has to happen here, [and] most people don’t realize this, I was the chairman of the [House] Oversight Committee, the inspectors general out there can go out and inspect anything going on in the federal government, except attorneys at the Department of Justice.”

“They can look at individual cases, but the one group of people that’s exempt are attorneys at the Department of Justice,” added Chaffetz, who noted that the House had passed a bill by voice vote which he said allows “inspectors general to go and look at these individual attorneys.”

“I think they’re scared to death of Donald Trump and Barr and Durham and certainly Horowitz because they don’t want people peeling back the onion [and] looking under the hood at how these people have operated at the Department of Justice,” Chaffetz said.

“That’s why they’re firing back. But now they’re being exposed.”

  11. I am not so sure that a law suit would be frivolous if he filed for all the false personal attacks on him. Sometimes, you have to use a little imagination when you file an action.

  12. Turley, you again try to make the claim that Trump didn’t collude: “Some of us agree with the criticism of the Russian investigation, a criticism that has been reinforced by findings that there was no probable cause for the renewal of the FISA surveillance and there was no collusion with Russia.”

The ONLY reason why Mueller could not obtain probable cause was Trump’s refusal to cooperate, commanding witnesses not to testify, refusing to turn over documents, and hiding his financials. You can’t be exonerated if you hide evidence, and Mueller found that Trump obstructed justice. You can’t have it both ways, and you can’t come up with any legal precedent saying that Trump can do as he pleases, refusing to testify, commanding witnesses not to testify and hiding documents. TRUMP WAS NOT EXONERATED. Stop pretending he is. Stop validating Trump’s arrogant lack of respect for the rule of law. Are you auditioning for a job as a Fox pundit? Sounds like it to me. As a law professor, you do know better. As a lawyer, you should be promoting respect for the rule of law, not praising someone who trashes it.

    1. Nutty:

Actually, he was acquitted. It’s the same as exoneration since your presumption of innocence is vindicated but maybe it’ll make you feel better to use that word.

      1. The Mueller Report didn’t acquit anyone. The Republican Senate, by predetermined vote, wouldn’t hear evidence, wouldn’t subpoena witnesses or documents, and voted to acquit along party lines except for Romney, who voted with his conscience. Having 48 U.S. Senators vote “guilty” is not exoneration. Having Republicans vote according to their party, instead of the rule of law, is not exoneration, especially when several of them publicly admitted they knew he was guilty but they still wouldn’t vote to convict. There aren’t any presumptions in impeachment proceedings. Trump is an impeached, fake President. He is a disgrace to this country. He needs to go. Now.

    2. JT would rather blame the House Democrats for ineptness. PJ says that they should have subpoenaed the witnesses in the administration and then fought out enforcement in the courts. But, of course, that battle would have run out the clock leading up to the November 2020 election, and would have totally frustrated the country’s patience and left voters with the belief that the Democrats are totally clueless.

JT wants to appear to be above the fray: his own ideological purity is his selling point.

    3. You do realize that the Trump Administration co-operated fully with the Mueller investigation? Bob Mueller even testified that he was not impeded in any way.

    4. Natacha Boozealot, please go take a Reading Comprehension Class!!!

It’s a Damned Fact Mueller & his team of American Hating Trash “Knew or Should have Known” within the 1st hour of the 1st day they gathered that there was no case for them to investigate, yet they continue the “Fraudulent Investigation” for over 2 more Years!

    5. Since your post here is substantively the same as in Bull Meets China Sop (https://jonathanturley.org/2020/02/16/bull-meets-china-shop-why-the-president-tweets-fail-another-causality-test-by-the-media/comment-page-2/#comment-1924450), I’ll paste my reply from that thread here:

Except, he actually cooperated fully with the Mueller probe. Please name the witnesses or documents he withheld. Please list each time he invoked executive privilege. Put simply: you can’t because he didn’t. Because you start your comments with such elementary faults, I saw no reason to read the remainder.

      TDS at its finest.

      1. Dave,
You’ve discovered quickly what the archives demonstrate: Natacha’s contributions on this blog are running on a loop; facts be damned.

      2. Read the Mueller Report, especially the second half that lays out at least 10 instances of obstruction of justice. Read what Mueller said on obstruction: Trump WAS NOT EXONERATED. Why didn’t Trump sit for either an interview or deposition, after initially agreeing to do so? That is a fact, and Team Trump drug out the investigation by not cooperating. Eventually, they submitted written answers to questions, drafted by Giuliani, that were not responsive, and they refused to amend the answers to respond to the substance of what information was being sought. That is not cooperation. It is obstruction. Why won’t Trump release his financials or the actual transcript of the Ukrainian call? Even you know why. Why wont banks loan Trump money? Because he’s a deadbeat. Where does the money funneled through Deutsche Bank come from? Any guesses?

    6. The ONLY reason why Mueller could not obtain probable cause was Trump’s refusal to cooperate, commanding witnesses not to testify, refusing to turn over documents,
      ________________________________________________

No all of that is false. There was no “Trump’s refusal to cooperate, commanding witnesses not to testify, refusing to turn over documents”– All of that is 100% false

The Mueller investigation was the Trump administration investigating the Trump administration concerning events that never happened. There was no reason for Trump to not cooperate fully. Millions of documents were turned over and all the witnesses testified without ever refusing on grounds of executive privilege.

      1. Read “A Very Stable Genius” by Phil Rucker and Carol Leonning. Trump initially agreed to meet with Mueller, but his handlers figured out that he’d only hang himself, so they drug things out for months, and then finally agreed to respond to written interrogatories. The answers were incomplete and they refused to amend the responses. Not less than 10 instances of obstruction are detailed in the Mueller Report. Read it.

Jinn: the tired argument about “millions of documents” is just hot air. They didn’t provide the documents that were relevant. This is an old lawyers’ trick: paper them to death, but don’t give anything useful, so it looks like you cooperated.

TRUMP DID NOT COOPERATE. HE WAS NOT EXONERATED. Mueller made that clear. What also should be clear is that he’s guilty as hell.

        1. Jinn: the tired argument about “millions of documents” is just hot air. They didn’t provide the documents that were relevant.

Barr is a repeat and continuation of Comey’s political and corrupt, non-prosecution of Hillary, Comey’s acts agaisnt a duly elected president and Comey’s acts against the very Constitution itself.

Barr is as corrupt as Comey and “company.”

America is forced to watch as legions of glaring, atrocious and reprehensible criminals walk free.

The product of this criminal negligence and dereliction is more deplorable than that of the Orenthal James Simpson trial, the JFK assassination, etc.

  16. So, I guess the President doesn’t have his right to free speech because, let me get this straight, He is making Barr’s job harder! Maybe Barr should grow a set and do his job. Lawyers like you Turley should know better!! Never restrict free speech! This is why the American people support Trump. We are sick and tired of elites, lawyer, judges telling us how we need to act when you have no moral authority at all. In fact most of your kind are corrupt and that becomes more clear by the day. You know why? Because Trump has the balls to express his right to free speech which keeps exposing you and others. Fact is you don’t like “US” deplorable’s, right? You know us farmers and mine workers truck drivers. we’re just not as smart as you folks. Trump has dropped lots of crumbs for us so we can open ours eyes to your corruption and the days of lawyers running over us are over!! Know that, all the top law enforcement gets away with crimes whats stopping “US” deplorable’s? Why should we follow the law you keeping trying to defend? What is stopping us from taking over? We are going to take our country back from elite like you and others, we are not following YOUR laws anymore!! You blew it.

    1. I am fully in favor of barring any member of the Barr from elected office as it’s a clear violation of vested interest. No to worried yet since the timing of the investigation announcements and the indictments should be coordinated to do the most damage possible to the opponents. Paybacks oare after all a mother father. Right Pelosi? RIGHT?

  17. Well Hell, looky there, Zerohedge:

    >> Trump Commutes Rod Blagojevich Sentence; Pardons Ex-NY Police Chief Kerik & ‘Junk-Bond King’ Milken <<

    Pardons for Stone/Flynn/Manaport/Etc…. in 3, 2, 1…

    Well see.

    1. Blagojevich has been in prison for over a decade. I’m not sure he made a dime out of the scheme that landed him there.

      1. I should buy my son the audio version of Milken’s book so I can listen to it. The guy is , what???, a mathematical genius lunatic?

Notice with those types, generally ugly hell, but they’ve got the big bucks & they know how to score with the women. I’m not saying nothing. lol.

If I understand P Turley he's suggesting the way the corruption in the Fed Courts/FBI/DOJ currently works, it doesn't matter that the cases against Flynn, Stone & many others were composed 1st from the fruit of the poisonous tree of the multiple illegal Coups against the US Govt/Us Citizens/Trump by the Fed Courts/FBI/DOJ which then wrapped it in soiled Virgin White cloth & sent it off for a stacked Grand Jury out the DC area for their blessing.

( Insert the joke DC has made of itself here. ) lol;)

How could DC protected class ever again make a perjury against anyone? Lying bast*ds.
