The Internet is raging with conspiracy theories this weekend on how President Donald Trump may be faking his illness or using his Covid-19 treatment for some hidden dark purpose. MSNBC host Joy Reid drew criticism for passing along postings on how Trump may be lying about his illness to “get out of the debates.” On CNN, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer agreed with host Erin Burnett that even Vice President Pence may be lying in simply saying that morning that the President and First Lady were doing well while convalescing in the White House. Michael Moore warned the public that this all may be a massive lie orchestrated by Trump.
While correctly lambasting Qanon and other sites for misinforming and conspiracy theories, Trump critics often have a high tolerance for their own conspiracists, including leading journalists.
Consider the basis for the latest conspiracy theory. Trump would have to enlist the support of literally hundreds of people to hide the fact that he is really doing fine. Doctors, nurses, security, and other at Walter Reed would have to be part of this elaborate lie. And what is the purpose? The contraction of Covid-19 is an obvious embarrassment for the President who has been criticized for downplaying the virus and insisting that the country is turning the corner. In the meantime, Trump would have taken himself off the campaign trail at the critical time in the election.
The White House properly informed the public of the positive testing and has disclosed details on his treatment. It allows press to film him walking to the helicopter and entering Walter Reed.
Others have questioned whether he is truly taking the experimental “drug cocktail” or lying about his reaction to it. Again what is the basis and advantage of such lies?
If we are going to unleash more conspiracy theories, at least make them interesting. The real fear should not be an effort to avoid debate. Rather something far far more sinister could be revealed as Trump emerges from his experimental treatment. No, I am not speaking of viral immunity. I am speaking of super MAGA powers:
Now that is a conspiracy theory and it is just about as plausible as President Trump being treated not by hundreds of professionals, but co-conspirators.
This is a serious illness and the President is clearly a high-risk patient. However, the medical staff has moved quickly and aggressively. We would do well to take a brief break from our ragefest and simply wish the President a speedy recovery. Then everyone can return to this bloodsport as known as the American presidential election.
So, as leader of the US, Trump set an example of stupidity and denial. Two hundred thousand + deaths later, and scores of high up mucky mucks including Trump get their just desserts. One has to ask, now that it is unarguable that Trump was wrong, a liar, a fraud, and no where near Presidential material; just how many died because of him. I’d say Trump is responsible for half the mess, deaths, economic, etc. Anyone who wants to argue this point only has to look at other countries where they locked it down and imagine the US if it had a responsible President who set the standard of wearing a mask, listening to the experts, etc. Take a moment and imagine and then think of how many Americans Trump killed.
Oh for God’s sake. Use some common sense.

Mr. Turley misunderstands what President Trump’s position has been. It’s not that he believes COVID is “fake,” but that he believes it’s been overstated by the media and Democrats (for political purposes.) As a matter of fact, the vast majority of cases are mild, some with no symptoms at all. Critics of the president are hoping he’ll develop a serious case – and die. That’s their hope. In fact, it appears his case IS mild and he’s only been hospitalized as a precaution because of who he is. I know and know of several people who had or have it and only one was hospitalized, and that was precautionary. One acquaintance told me it was a like a really bad cold, but he and his wife experienced fatigue. They own a takeout pizza parlor and none of their employees, who are mostly in their twenties, contracted the virus. Yes, COVID-19 is a serious illness but so is flu and other common illnesses. And Mr. Trump is over 65 and in the most vulnerable group – but only if a person has underlying illnesses such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and severe obesity, which he does not. If Biden catches it, and he may very well have been exposed in Cleveland, he may have problems because he’s a frail old man four years older than Donald Trump.
Trump’s age and obesity put him in a group that has a higher chance of dying.
If Trump exposed Biden in Cleveland, will you be hoping he’ll develop a serious case – and die?

I am also pretty kewl with “conspiracy theories” in general. I was once a “birth certificate” Birther, who had questions about Obama. I approached it from a different point of view however, with my KISS matrix. To me, the real issue was Obama’s refusal to release his long form birth certificate, even after a poll showed 58% of the country had some doubts about where he was born. That being said, I have no problem with current day people wondering if Trump is really sick or not. I believe him, and I think he has been the most open and honest President we have ever had, maybe excepting George Washington, and a few other of the Founding Fathers. However, when you come to Russiagate, I think that is a discredited conspiracy theory, and particularly when we now know that it was started by Hillary Clinton, whose people also started the Birther conspiracy. Not one of the individuals or organizations responsible for these fabrications, exaggerations, and silliness have apologized, so I guess that means they were not lying, just stretching the truth a bit.
