“Enjoying It Too Much”: Democrats Overplay a Simple Adjournment Vote and Elect Kevin McCarthy

For those of us who have worked in and around Congress for years, last night’s final election of a speaker in the early hours of Saturday was nothing short of an extended Nascar race, particularly if you come to watch the cars crash. The evening had everything from gallows humor to a virtual wrestling match on the floor.

It finished as unpredictably as it began. Kevin McCarthy fell just one vote short of winning as tempers boiled over and the GOP sought an adjournment until Monday. The Democrats then overplayed their hand by gratuitously seeking to prolong the pain by opposing the motion. Then something unexpected happened…

…the holdouts changed their votes.

At midnight on Friday, after twelve hours of grueling deliberations and votes, there was no reason to force the GOP to continue to vote except to enjoy the sport and spectacle of the moment. It was gratuitous and peevish and it produced the opposite effect on the GOP ranks.

It was reminiscent of the scene in True Grit when John Wayne stops Glenn Campbell from spanking Kim Darby — not because she didn’t deserve it but because “you are enjoying it too much.”

The opposition to adjourn clearly was too much for the holdouts watching the glee of the opposition.  Popcorn is one thing but prolonging pain is another. The holdouts agreed to vote present to give McCarthy the win.

Some Democrats seemed stunned by the reversal of fortunes with Rep. Dean Phillips (D., Minn.) rising to nominate Rep. Hakeem Jeffries and saying, “I rise to say, ‘Wow.'” Opposing adjournment for fun is like staying too long at a dinner . . . you can get stuck with the check.

The moment seemed to galvanize the GOP and McCarthy and others quickly changed their votes to oppose their own motion and join the Democrats. They then elected McCarthy as the 55th Speaker.

The moment should not be lost on Democrats. It is one thing to prolong the punishment but you cannot enjoy it so much that you supply the missing unifying catalyst for the opposing party.

The 118th Congress is now in place and will reconvene on Monday. Things are likely to now move fast and furious for the new majority. There is likely to be a shortage of popcorn in the beltway.

  1. Very many Americans who care deeply about America and her future want to see the sausage being made. The lobbyists don’t want us to see it.

If I were king, I would modify the Constitution to say “All legislative and administrative advocacy is public domain” (with very limited carveouts for national security issues). The impact would be that lobbyists would be required to publish any “ask” before communicating it with a legislator or regulator. If a lobbyist veered off into unpublished content during a meeting with the government, the agenda item would be halted, and not allowed to resume until the content were published.

The impact would be for corporations and lobbyists to better align their policy interests with those of the public. Under the Pelosi-Ryan-Boehner system, they could wire into legislation goodies that work against the public interest to their selfish benefit, and do it all in private. An example was the Patent Law revision a decade ago under Obama that undermined the longstanding IP rights of the small, independent inventor, and tilted the game toward huge tech companies.

This might not be a sexy issue, but strong inventor rights built this great country, and they’ve been seriously eclipsed by the corrupt, rent-seeking “swamp”.

  2. It is truly bizarre that Turley thinks he can know what Gaetz thinks and make a stupid pronouncement about his switch. Seems he forgot or didn’t know that Trump deserves ALL the credit for this solution. Turley is just so concerned with slandering and cursing Democrats he goes out on a fantasy limb with no info or reason. I used to have some respect for his opinion, now he is a partisan hack who is left out of the loop in Trump world.

  3. Once you understand the great lesson of history and of organized religion that monstrous evil is always tempered by its boundless delusion (usually translated as mindnumbing stupidity. See Hitler ordering phantom divisions into the Battle of the Bulge), the heavens open, light streams into the darkness you understand today’s Democtatic party. Take the oopsy. “mistaken” leak of the J6 conservative witnesses SSNs. Anybody think that wasn’t deliberate act perpetrated by a shrill harpie with a situational/self awareness coupled with an assurance of “doing good” that only a three-year old could admire?

  4. The public unity of the 212 Democrats perhaps is a false front. I suspect most House Dems would like a more participatory House process, more responsibility put on Committees, and less power centralized in the Speaker’s Office. I mean, Pelosi treated most of the Dem Caucus as potted plants.

    1. If the House rules were the main issue for some Republicans (15 or 20), would it have been more appropriate for these Republicans to support McCarthy for Speaker earlier and fight/negotiate on the rules package that is a separate vote?

    2. But this soft McCarthy is way worse.kudos to those who stood against him so long..he’s just going to get more our soldiers kulled…And for what? Zelunsky? I’m sorry that ship has sailed. America have its promise. No my dad – my uncle …mine…have by their generation promised russia…certain thing….And McCarthy assists are making liars out of them! ..maybe Clinton will teach about that at her new school!……the point is america made promises. We ought to keep them. Especially since the world ordered themself off them… Relegated. Think about that…the world used that promise to relegate …their affairs. If the USA is renigging….then alot of “unknowns’ unwind. Rumsfeld. And Rummy et al l. Don’t know how it unwinds at all
! I’m pretty sure though the Christians and orthodox church have a day in it. That is you are going to lose a lot of christians…who side with russia..but you don’t care because you can call them traitors….but it doesn’t work like that….USA made the promise….USA has to stAnd by their promise….or USA can’t be trusted. So usa if it can’t be trusted is over…as an ongoing concern. If we lied to the only other super power at the time….no other country should trust us….And we can’t even recruit soldiers….what they going to do draft all Americans to stAnd behind their “government” backed dollar…..start that and I’m certain the billionaire Americans will like russia….a lot. Geatz tried

  5. ATS, it’s hard to keep track of all the anonymous posters with your self-deletions that delete everyone else’s work product.

I’m not sure who you responded to with this comment, “Meyer is a know-nothing bully.”

You are again making a fool out of yourself. It appears you were responding to yourself and a dumb link you made about the death of Boyland. You demonstrated total ignorance trying to tell everyone that Boyland “had collapsed while standing off to the side in the Capitol rotunda.”

That is pretty stupid and demonstrates ignorance on your part. As I told Benson earlier, there are videos of Boyland’s death. A black female police officer beat her with a baton or stick, and then she was dead.

Before accusing others of being a know-nothing, why don’t you get things straight and know who you are talking to? It is confusing with all the anonymous posters but even more confusing because you self-delete a chain of comments so no one can refer to the blog to see what was said. I guess you prefer to be stupid.

    1. ATS self-deleted ““I guess you prefer to be stupid.” -S. Meyer — the bully Meyer says this to himself, while looking in the mirror.” plus below.

This is you, no content. Links to garbage, lies, and deception. You don’t even know how Boyland died. You are worthless.

    2. I for one appreciate your passion…but are you sure she deleted it and not Darren or someone else? Because you don’t really know who deleted it.! Let’s step back and listen to what you are saying. Before you city cut off supportrrs. Start from the beginning and bring us all up to speed. I want to hear this story!

      1. “are you sure she deleted it and not Darren or someone else?”

Jaelyn, I am as sure as I can be. ATS uses an address that causes deletion by WP or a moderator, but ATS controls what address he uses.

One can note his recent quirky insults to me appearing in your inbox. Though appearing in your inbox, the majority will not appear in the blog as intended since ATS controls the address he uses.

I proved the self-deletions about a year ago when I predicted which of his posts (along with the rest of the chain) would be deleted, and they were. I did that a couple of times.

When he becomes very frustrated, he has a meltdown, and that is when he starts deleting himself and blaming others. He tries to hide among the anonymous posters, but the types of a post he writes are almost always his. He also uses pretend friends and sometimes has an icon and a name. Jonathan was one, and green anonymous was another. He has used many others.

He is a deceiver and a liar. He has been wrong on almost every significant topic. He hides being wrong under anonymous with a generic icon.

It is helpful for me to label him as Anonymous the Stupid or ATS. The abbreviation was from another blogger. It is a rule of mine, always label your enemy.

He acts like a Stalinist supporter and might arise from a family that was Stalinist and didn’t join the New Left that tried to separate the murders from their Stalinist behavior. I know I am stretching parts where I lack knowledge, but one can follow known trends and Anonymous the Stupid fits.

He uses Alinskyite tactics. So did Hillary, and Saul Alinsky was her mentor. However, I do not believe Saul Alinsky originated such tactics. I think he took them from Stalin.

Republicans need to get off their butts and get a bit dirty, though not illegal. They should be willing to get their hands dirty and stop worrying about how they appear.

The recent fight for speakership by McCarthy, who is on the left side of the Republican Party, shows the problems faced within the party. The Freedom Caucus was asking for more democracy and less Pelosi dictatorship. They want all members of Congress to have their say. I posted this before, but if you are interested and haven’t seen it, here it is again.

  6. Was the heinous, wanton slaying, as demonstrable homicide, of a harmless, unarmed woman, Ashli Babbitt, more or less egregious than the routine and innocuous application of an approved and trained police restraint hold against a vile, unwashed prole and unrepentant multiple felon, George Floyd?

    Oh, that’s a tough one!

    1. I do he was talking about sushi babbitt? I find that particularly disturbing…that that killed is staying in the toshnahall…. On tax payer dime…well the rest of them in a gulag….the killer should be in the same conditions. To do otherwise is to pre judge….but that is Jan 6 …prejudginging….when the how point was about not predicting elections.no matter I 6 solidified 1000 people plus for everyone electected. We got a way to screw them back….my folks get into now every week. For an inr…..all Midwesterners need their one checked weekly….because it can change by adrenaline. Keep getting your inr one checked often if they don’t – it’s discrimination. ! If one is driven by adrenaline…get it checked often. Show them the science.! And they know it which is what makes their jailing of j6 cruel but it will take a state to extradite them out a there….a state with balls! Kay ivey? Get your people back!

  7. Nancy, take off that “Bumpkin From Bakersfield” costume.

Oh, and, Mike, get that ridiculous carpet off of your RINO/AINO head!

    It’s all too much.

    Dang!

  8. Jonathan: Let me make one correction to my earlier comment. GOP Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick did show up for the Friday ceremony honoring those who fought and gave their lives defending the Capitol 2 years ago. He was the only GOP lawmaker to do so. Michael Falone, the DC police officer who testified about the events on Jan. 6, had this comment: “”[i]t’s very difficult to defend the Republican Party when only one of their members takes the time to show up and show support for law enforcement that was there defending them that day. It’s disgraceful!”

    1. No cop gave their lives defending the Capitol

If you are so sure of your position, why are you always lying?

The only reason any died is because Pelosi refused to defend the Capitol

        1. Twitter is not on the masthead of The New York Times. But Twitter has become its ultimate editor. As the ethics and mores of that platform have become those of the paper, the paper itself has increasingly become a kind of performance space. Stories are chosen and told in a way to satisfy the narrowest of audiences, rather than to allow a curious public to read about the world and then draw their own conclusions. I was always taught that journalists were charged with writing the first rough draft of history. Now, history itself is one more ephemeral thing molded to fit the needs of a predetermined narrative.

      1. Here here…sickeningly pumelled.with a fire hydrant….show me the pummelling

    2. The only person who was killed on J6 was Ashley Rabbit. She was a small and unarmed woman who posed no threat to anyone’s physical safety. She was murdered by a capitol police officer who had a history of recklessness with firearms. There was no justification for the shooting. Still, he has faced no consequences. Zero police officers lost their lives that day.

      1. Nothing prevents her family from filing a wrongful death suit. They said they were going to, but they haven’t.

In the meantime, Brian Sicknick’s longtime partner has filed a wrongful death suit against Trump and two protesters on behalf of Sicknick’s estate. Time will tell what a jury decides.

        1. At your age, you should know better than to trust the NYTimes.

—NYTimes quotes followed by my comments in [ ]
Ashli Babbitt, an Air Force veteran, was fatally shot by a Capitol Police officer as rioters tried to breach the House chamber. [ By an officer who was careless with his weapon before and should not have been on the force. That was proven after one looks at the videos of him murdering Babbitt.]

Kevin D. Greeson died of a heart attack, collapsing on the sidewalk west of the Capitol on Jan. 6. [ He was in close proximity to a flash bomb explosion thrown by Capitol Police. Why would they discharge a flash bomb away from the action? I would prefer a second opinion. There has been too much lying from the left.]

Rosanne Boyland appeared to have been crushed in a stampede of fellow rioters as they surged against the police. [The videos show a different story. one can see a black police officer beating her with a stick or baton while she was down. She died shortly after.]

Benjamin Philips, the founder of a pro-Trump website called Trumparoo, died of a stroke. [ He was in close proximity to a flash bomb explosion thrown by Capitol Police. Why would they discharge a flash bomb away from the action? I would prefer a second opinion. There has been too much lying from the left ]

In the days and weeks after the riot [Lots of people died after the riot but the NYTimes is geared toward the brain dead], five police officers who had served at the Capitol on Jan. 6 died.

Officer Brian D. Sicknick of the Capitol Police, who was attacked by the mob, died on Jan. 7. [Originally said by the NYTimes he died after a beating with a fire extinguisher that didn’t exist. The death was from a stroke not the rioters.]

Officer Jeffrey Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department killed himself after the attack. [Maybe he felt like cr-p after seeing how badly many of the police acted. Alternatively, maybe he knew something and he was Clintonized. Who knows?]

Officer Howard S. Liebengood of the Capitol Police also died by suicide four days afterward. [Same as above]

      2. Don’t forget she was shot in the back. I say the he was a scared little boy. Plus maybe he just wanted another mark on his gun belt.

    3. Dennis McIntyre:

Who gave their lives defending the Capitol? Officer Brian Sicknick died of natural causes, from two strokes.

What do you have to say about the police officers killed by Democrats over the year of rioting? What about the sharp rise in police suicides? Where is the moment of silence for the police victims of Democrat brutality?

You falsely accused the January 6th rioters of killing those who defended the Capitol. This was demonstrably untrue. The vast majority of January 6th rioters were charged with trespassing and illegally parading. Any rioter who laid hands on a police officer was also charged with assault. Those who removed police barricades were charged with assaulting or interfering with police. Obviously violence against police is immoral and illegal. That said, none of them murdered any cops.

Why do you falsely accuse the January 6th rioters of murdering cops, while ignoring the Democrat rioters who actually did murder cops? You keep accusing Republicans of what Democrats actually did. The January 6th rioters didn’t get away with anything. In fact, even those charged only with illegally parading served time in solitary. Meanwhile, Democrats in authority let most Democrat rioters off without even being charged, and most of those who were charged were diverted to rehabilitation programs. Meanwhile, the Democrat media extolled the virtues of the rioters, and shielded the arson and violence as “mostly peaceful.”

These are the police officers assaulted or murdered during the George Floyd riots alone. It does not include the sharp increase of ambushes on cops, which was the result of Democrat-promoted bigotry against cops.

    4. Dennis – Falcone should direct his anger toward the Democratic leadership that refused to properly defend the Capitol. “Sund [former Capital Police Chief] also confirmed earlier reporting by Just the News on the events that led to National Guard troops not being deployed to the Capitol ahead of Jan. 6. Capitol Police documents reviewed by Just the News show the Trump Pentagon first offered National Guard troops to Sund’s department on Jan. 2, 2021, four full days ahead of the tragedy. The department initially declined the help but quickly changed course and asked for permission to deploy troops, only to be turned down. Sund said he first requested National Guard troops be deployed on the morning of Jan. 3, 2021, but was turned down because political leaders did not like the optics of troops carrying weapons and guarding the Capitol.”
https://justthenews.com/government/congress/ex-capitol-police-boss-says-politics-hampered-jan-6-security-under Ther term “political leaders” must point to the Democratic leadership of the House. BTW – Isn’t this a reminder of Benghazi? The refusal to defend American govenment property out of concern for how it might look?

  9. To people who know more than me: I recall there was some consternation that if this dragged out too long, liberal Republicans might make a deal with the Dems and then the committees would be evenly split, meaning no investigations into the nefarious dealings over the last 2 years. So does this development mean that’s not true, IOW, that the GOP will, after all, have control of the committees – and hence, the needed investigations will happen?

  10. Mr. Turley, I believe is biased here:
The fact is that every time in the past 4 days a motion for adjournment was presented, Democrats voted against it. They were nothing if being consistent.
And, if the Democrats really were instrumental in securing Mr. McCarthy the speaker-ship according to Mr. Turley, isn’t this is a good thing?
It is time the House got back to the business of oversight and creating policy.

Here are some other observations that make me proud to be an American:
    1. Seeing the family of House elects on the floor – reminds me that that these representatives are real people with families.
    2. Seeing the interactions between Democrats and Republicans: AOC and Paul Gosar, Debbie Wasserman-Schulz and Matt Gaetz.
    3. The proceedings for the 4 days were passionate, engaging and peaceful.

    1. 1. Seeing the family of House elects on the floor – reminds me that that these representatives are real people with families.

True, they are just like the people that elected them.

      2. Seeing the interactions between Democrats and Republicans: AOC and Paul Gosar, Debbie Wasserman-Schulz and Matt Gaetz

Misery loves company so there is that, plus birds of a feather, screech together

      3. The proceedings for the 4 days were passionate, engaging and peaceful.

there were no molotov cocktails flung, no looting, destruction of buildings nor any loss of lives, so you are wrong. The proceedings were not mostly peaceful. Had they followed the mostly peaceful example of the BLM ANTIFA terrorists, then it would have been mostly peaceful proceedings. Clearly Republicans cant hold a candle to Marxists Democrats

    2. The fact is that every time in the past 4 days a motion for adjournment was presented, Democrats voted against it. They were nothing if being consistent.

And yet somehow a number of GOP congressmen found this time to be different.

  11. Jonathan: I suppose the Dems did enjoy watching while the GOP fought among itself trying desperately to get McCarthy across the finish line. I know I did. It showed the deep dysfunction in the GOP caucus. For the first time we saw on public display how much Matt Gaetz hates McCarthy. Then we saw Rep.-elect George Santos casting his vote for McCarthy–standing up while giving the white power gesture. Not only is Santos the guy who lies about everything but he is a white supremacist. This was not lost on the millions who saw it live on TV. Santos, Gaetz and Marjorie Taylor are now the faces of the Republican Party. No wonder the Dems refused to participate in any way in this bizarre spectacle.

McCarthy had to give away the store to get the Speakership. He had to pander to the extreme right-wing, election denying wing of the party who will make it almost impossible for him to get anything constructive done in the new Congress. So it’s gridlock in the House for the next 2 years. After the 11th vote on Thursday night Seth Myers had a great take on his “late Night” show: “I am in no rush for this particular House of Representatives to get to work. If Republicans ever figure their (bleep) out, it’s gonna be two years of Hunter Biden’s laptop and threats to detonate the economy and Anthony Fauci in a dunk tank. By all means, take your time”.

While the Republicans were fighting among themselves in their circular firing squad, Pres. Biden was presiding over a ceremony to honor the officers who stood up to the insurrectionists 2 years ago to defend the Capitol and to remember those who gave their lives. Not one Republican bothered to take time to go over to participate. I’m sure the Dems would have agreed to an adjournment for that purpose. So you can’t blame the Dems for prolonging the agony. The GOP problem is entirely self-inflicted. It had a disastrous showing in the mid-terms and now governs with only a bare majority. That’s what you get when you put up acolytes of Donald Trump!

    1. * Friendly amendment: McCarthy didn’t have to do it, he chose to do it because he cared more about becoming Speaker than about the country. And the GOP is responsible at state-level for the extreme members in Congress, by creating gerrymandered districts that encourage extremism in primary contests.

      1. Anonymous: Yes, McCarthy didn’t have to do it. But he is a craven politician who seeks power as an end in itself. Remember he initially criticized Trump over the insurrection but then went to Mar-a-Lago, hat in hand, asking for Trump’s support in trying to flip the House to get the Speakership. He has no principles. Remember also that Trump endorsed a number of House and Senate GOP candidates. 11 of those candidates lost in the House and 5 lost in the Senate–including Herschel Walker. This was the most embarrassing loss for Trump. In terms of gerrymandering the GOP at the state level has been busy gerrymandering districts to try to dilute the Dem and Black vote. They did this in South Carolina after the 2020 census. But there is some good news. A federal court just ruled one district was illegally split based on race and ordered a new map must be submitted by March.

    2. “. . . the GOP fought among itself . . .”

A party that engages in serious debate over important issues. Versus one that marches in lockstep.

I’ll take the individualists over the mindless collectivists.

  12. Love the article….Professor Turley at his best!

Shame his usual excellent advice is ignored by the Democrats!

Elections have consequences as has been said by a Democrat….now they shall re-learn that lesson.

Remember all the crooked misconduct they engaged in….and Rules the changed….precedents they ignored…..now the shoe is on the other foot!

  13. Well according to Andrew Ogles (R-TN), here is some concessions McCarthy had to give:

As has been reported, it will only take a single congressperson, acting in what is known as a Jeffersonian Motion, to move to remove the Speaker if he or she goes back on their word or policy agenda.

A “Church” style committee will be convened to look into the weaponization of the FBI and other government organizations (presumably the CIA, the subject of the original Church Committee) against the American people.

Term limits will be put up for a vote.

Bills presented to Congress will be single subject, not omnibus with all the attendant earmarks, and there will be a 72-hour minimum period to read them.

The Texas Border Plan will be put before Congress. From The Hill: “The four-pronged plan aims to ‘Complete Physical Border Infrastructure,’ ‘Fix Border Enforcement Policies,’ ‘Enforce our Laws in the Interior’ and ‘Target Cartels & Criminal Organizations.’”

COVID mandates will be ended as will all funding for them, including so-called “emergency funding.”

Budget bills would stop the endless increases in the debt ceiling and hold the Senate accountable for the same.

Dont know about you all, but I think those are reasonable.

    1. Not only are McCarthy’s concessions reasonable, they are essential to governing a republic. And that we can be certain is something Putin definitely does not like.

  14. Most have long known that the full herd of elected Democratic Party politicos who grovel and kowtow gratuitously to their inept leadership most always do regrettable things to themselves.

What was witnessed last night and through the week was the kind of democracy we all should want. One in which our elected representatives serve first and foremost the wishes of their constituency over that of their party’s leadership. Republicans have shown us there are those among them who will do that. Democrats, on the other hand, are yet to prove themselves as worthy.

            1. george227 – if social security is so popular, why is not voluntary, and why do government workers resist being roped into it?

            2. Based off the last statement from the SS admin, I could of taken all those funds put into SS, put them in index funds and been close to $1.5million.
Instead I am looking at $86k.
Not that it matters. SS is a ponzi scheme. With our declining birth rate/less people in the work force, I am not planning on SS to be there when I am eligible, or what will be there will not match what I paid into SS.
Had I not been forced into paying for other peoples unemployment, I could of easily saved and invested those monies so I could make all my monthly payments, in cash for at least a year, if not longer.
In our household, we keep at least 6months liquid for exactly a situation like losing a job.

  15. When the Democrats voted against adjournment I looked over at my wife and said that it would cause the Republican holdouts to vote for McCarthy in the next round. It just revealed the pettiness of the Democrats. I am now leaving to go to the store to buy up as much popcorn as I can to avoid the coming shortage when the Republicans conduct their own investigations. I can’t wait for the show to begin.

  16. Does JT (or others) have any sources or basis for this Democrats overplayed hand theory that he is advancing? After all, the Democrats opposed adjournments all week with similar passion so why would this one make a difference to the so called rebels?

  17. Seems to me the dems got what they wanted, *again*. They are despicable. Time will certainly tell, but I do not expect a damn thing to change, and they are going to do everything in their power over the coming months to demonize the likes of DeSantis even WORSE than Trump or Kavanaugh. At some point they will cross a line they can’t retreat from – it’s inevitable since they have held onto power. This is NOT, the 70s, 80s, or 90s, and those addressing these things as though nothing has changed need to wake up. There is not going to be any course correction, IMO. Naturally, I’d be happy to be wrong.

    1. You are not wrong. They have no self-awareness, they live in an echo chamber, and there is literally nothing that will stop them from rushing headlong in the same direction they have been going. They will certainly try the same thing on De Santis as they did on Trump, but De Santis is a more disciplined and skilled politician than Trump, so he won’t make as easy a target.

      1. Even most dim, below average intellect ninth graders know there is no such thing as a national election.

  18. It really doesn’t matter what the Dems says. It only matters what the Republicans do. We will know soon enough if McCarthy will keep his promises.
