There is a disturbing report published on Michael Shellenberger’s Public Substack detailing how the U.S. intelligence community called upon foreign governments to target associates of Donald Trump before the 2016 election. The request to the “Five Eyes” agencies (the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand) appears to have come from Obama’s CIA Director, John Brennan.
According to Shellenberger, Matt Taibbi and Alex Gutentag, foreign intelligence agencies were asked to conduct the surveillance, including “bumping” the associates — a term for making contact with or casually engaging a target to generate intelligence. These encounters may also have been used to generate intelligence reports used to support further intelligence efforts by the United States in the Russian investigation.
The journalists reported that Britain’s Government Communications Headquarters intelligence apparatus, or GCHQ, went ahead in contacting the Trump’s associates as early as March 2016.
Keep in mind that this was the same month that George Papadopoulos joined the Trump campaign as an adviser. It was also when Papadopoulos met a London-based professor, Josef Mifsud, who Papadopoulos was led to believe had “substantial connections to Russian government officials.”
On March 21, 2016, Trump identified Papadopoulos and Carter Page as members of his foreign policy team.
If true, the question is the basis for such surveillance of U.S. citizens associated with the opposing political party and a presidential campaign.
The role of Brennan is intriguing. Brennan was the one who briefed President Barack Obama on Hillary Clinton’s alleged “plan” to tie then-candidate Donald Trump to Russia as “a means of distracting the public from her use of a private email server.”
It was also Brennan who later declared during the Trump Administration that a press conference with Vladimir Putin was “nothing short of treason.” He later said that he did not mean real treason when he said it was nothing short of treason.
Brennan also signed the infamous letter warning that the Hunter Biden laptop had all of the markings of Russian intelligence, a letter that he later admitted was “political.”
Now these sources are claiming that agents from the Five Eyes “were making contacts and bumping Trump people going back to March 2016.”
Former FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith was sentenced to probation in 2021 after admitting that he falsified evidence to renew a wiretap against former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.
Shellenberger and Taibbi have a record of investigating in areas long avoided by other journalists, particularly in exposing the massive censorship system funded and coordinated by the government. There is much to learn about these allegations and their underlying support. If proven, it would appear that neither the Inspector General nor John Durham were given the full picture of the origins of the Russian investigation. Moreover, there are intriguing questions over a referenced binder that sources said contained much of this intelligence and analysis. That binder or binders allegedly disappeared from the CIA.
Once again, this is still the early reporting and we need to have more confirmation on these facts. However, Congress should be interested in whether the origins for the Russian investigation began with nudges from American intelligence in 2016 to the “Five Eyes.”
Arguably the most vital reform needed in over 100 years, is annual “Oath of Office” loyalty training, especially for the top managers of our security and intel agencies.
It might sound academic but in secret government, proper loyalty matters.
Lower level security and intel personnel – like all of us – have mortgages, college tuitions and other responsibilities. These subordinates are required to follow orders from superiors. Even illegal orders.
Agency top management, Congress and the courts are 100% for creating agency cultures. Loyalty matters to our brave government servants, but it starts at the very top.

The context I wrote is that with trump openly saying he would encourage Russia to do what they want with a NATO country, maybe, just maybe there are other things in his past that point to a person that might, just might, have more involvement with Russia than we have been led on to believe.
I think Matt’s work on twitter was pretty good but I do believe he discounted what the motives were behind many people. You can argue whether the government should be involved in fact finding, that is fine. But he went beyond that and impugned motives that I believe were contrary to what the facts indicated.

Since WWII, the US has paid for the defense of Europe. Our troops are in the frontline and we fund most of the costs. It took Trump to threaten the European members to pay as little as 2% of their GDP for their own defense. I used to live there. After the Berlin wall fell and the Sovjet Union collapsed. one of there governments publicly stated that less could be spend on defense as the threat from the East was minimized and, if things would go wrong anyway, the Americans would come. That has been the mentality. Europe has over 500 million inhabitants v. 150 million Russians. Russia GDP is the size of just Italy. In other words, Europe has the means to defend itself, but prefers to spend its money on social welfare and let the US pay for their defense. I am not an isolationist, but the US should put its own interests first, and that is not to have 800 military bases spread out over the world to protect someone else. That only serves the military-industrial complex.

They do not have the logistical capability to support such a campaign.

Remember, When Testifying, Vindman was asked what specifically was wrong with the phone call. He replied, the President of the United States was going against the narrative of the “working group” providing diplomatic direction concerning Ukraine. We have an overclassification problem in this country. What is stamped “secret” or above seems to never see the light of day for at least 50 years or more. What a better way to protect criminals in our government? Most of them would be dead before anything they were involved in was declassified.
I find it remarkable that a House Committee can only get access to CIA documents on CIA’s terms (at CIA premises, surveilled by CIA staff, and prohibited from taking docs with them). Again, bureaucrats believe they are in charge and not elected officials in the executive branch or legislative branch. The bureaucracy is out of control and needs to be reiled in.

On a related story, it appears from a BBC report, that the Australian parliament has voted to demand that Julian Assange be released by the UK and USA. Assange has essentially been sentenced to a life term of imprisonment for his role in disclosing the truth about Hillary Clinton and John Podesta. I believe that, like Trump, he is being prosecuted under The Espionage Act.

These allegations are serious and must either be proven or de-bunked. If shown to be true, it’s just more evidence of how corrupt the Obama Administration was. With the laws that currently exist, the NSA is not supposed to snoop on domestic communications of Americans (with certain exceptions that the law permits). Why there are any exceptions to this limitation on the NSA is beyond me. When the NSA feels like it might be breaking the law, they apparently “farm out” this task to one of our intelligence partners to accomplish and get the data anyhow. I simply do not trust our intelligence agencies, including the FBI to dispassionately and fairly conduct investigations. We already know that the Government has no problem surveilling Americans and even going so far as lying to the FISA Court (FISC) to get warrants (or renew them). We are living in a dystopian society where our government is far too big and powerful and uses the massive capability we have given them to snoop on us as long as they can “determine” there is a national security interest in doing so. Edward Snowden warned us this was happening. He knew that his life was probably in danger by revealing these secrets. He was branded as a “traitor” for doing so and I was one of those that (at the time) believed he was. I now no longer do. Our government desperately needs to be reined in and the corruption in the shadowy world of “intelligence” exposed. The FISC should already have severely sanctioned those who have weaponized our intelligence agencies against us and deceived the Court in order to break the law.

Today, we’re hearing about the CIA possibly offshoring spying on Americans that’s illegal for the CIA itself to do. But remember that Hillary outsourced her dirty tricks through foreign sources like Steele. Her campaign was fined for funding this misconduct, but nobody went to jail. And Fauci is accused—very credibly—of offshoring research like Wuhan that was barred by US research protocols.
The Democrats and their hacks in the federal bureaucracy use foreign assets for illegality so that Hillary, Obama, Brennan, Fauci, etc. can claim plausible deniability, and just try subpoenaing a foreign asset to prove it—hopeless.
It looks less and less like a set of coincidences and more and more like deliberate racketeering by public officials.

Diogenes, I don’t think any of this is a coincidence. Too many of our legislators and deep state actors have misbehaved. John Brennan is a traitor! And if Obama knew, let alone instigated or encouraged these actions, he is a traitor too. This needs to lead to prosecutions and jail time, otherwise, it will only get worse. Trump may want to do this, but if he is not neutralized politically (through law suits etc) before the elections, and if election manipulation does not bring the desired result, so he wins, then I fear assassination may be instigated with all the risks of civil war.
