Poll: Majority of Americans Distrust in the Media

A poll from  the American Press Institute and The Associated Press-NORC Center has found that a majority of Americans are extremely worried or very concerned about bias in the media and the reporting of false or misleading information. Only 48% of Republicans and 34% of independents still receive their news from national news outlets and expressed the greatest trust of the media.

The poll shows that 47% of Americans have serious concern that news outlets would report information that has not been confirmed or verified, and 44% worry that accurate information will be presented in a way that favors one side or another.

For years, the journalists have sawed on the branch upon which they are sitting. Even National Public Radio, which receives federal funding, is unrepentant in the face of criticism over its overt political bias.

Former New York Times writer (and now Howard University journalism professor) Nikole Hannah-Jones declared recently that “all journalism is activism.” Advocacy journalism is all the rage in journalism schools and on major media platforms.

A recent series of interviews with over 75 media leaders by Leonard Downie Jr., former Washington Post executive editor, and Andrew Heyward, former CBS News president, reaffirmed this shift. As Emilio Garcia-Ruiz, editor-in-chief at the San Francisco Chronicle, stated: “Objectivity has got to go.”

But that objective seems to depend heavily upon what ideology you are advocating.

The result is that the mainstream media is increasingly speaking to itself and a dwindling number of viewers and readers. NPR is again a good example.

NPR’s audience has been declining. Indeed, that trend has been most pronounced since 2017. The company has also reported falling advertising revenue and, like many outlets, has made deep staff cuts to deal with budget shortfalls.

Yet, while tacking aggressively to the left and openly supporting narratives (including some false stories) from Democratic sources, NPR and its allies still expect citizens to subsidize its work. That includes roughly half of the country with viewpoints now effectively banished from its airwaves.

The result is that about half of Americans rely on social media for their primary source of news. That is why it is not surprising that the censorship of social media has been a priority among many liberal groups. The effort is to eliminate sources of information and regulate what citizens see and read.

Despite this effort, the trend is likely to continue. Recently at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, the host Colin Jost remarked how he could not believe the race was tied despite all of the bad coverage of Trump. At events like the dinner, there is disbelief that citizens are not just following their narrative and shaping of the news. The fact is that many are no longer listening or watching. The MSM is “playing to the house,” not to the public at large.

So we are left with the variation of a common Zen-like question: if the media reports and no one is listening, does it still make a sound?

  1. Only one president in over 200 years of American history has refused to leave office. This happened after more than 60 judges unanimously ruled Trump had lost the election.

By comparison, Al Gore who received about 500,000 more votes than George W. Bush received challenged the results in court but respected the ruling of the court.

When Hillary Clinton received about 3 million more votes than Trump received, Hillary accepted the results and respected constitutional due process.

Even though Trump is alleged to have violated 91 felony crimes, Trump has been given better treatment than any other defendant in any other court case.

    1. Another cowardly Anonymous Soviet Democrat hack tries the lie that Trump refused to leave office. And we’re supposed to buy that lie despite the fact that Trump left the White House and the presidency the day Bribery Biden was inaugurated.

Soviet Democrats and their feckless Anonymous police state fascist apparatchiks need to tell lies – there’s nothing that is true they could use to defend The Big Guy and their party.

But let’s crow and celebrate the fact that Soviet Democrat police state fascists have twisted and skewed the law to come up with 91 stacked indictments – while those exact same prosecutors ignore Bribery Biden in some cases doing far worse than Trump supposedly did, they allow rapists and criminals to go free while pursuing Trump… and Obama, Clinton, Zuckerburg, etc remain uncharged for election crimes because apparently just paying huge fines absolved them of facing felony charges.

    2. By comparison, Al Gore who received about 500,000 more votes than George W. Bush received challenged the results in court but respected the ruling of the court.

Why to you insist on lying?

      1. Not a lie. Not only did Gore respect the decision, he had to overule objectors who were trying to defend him personally at the elector meeting.

      1. Are you trying to prove you’re the most clueless person on the planet? Look it up. Just because you live in an information silo that doesn’t report accurate news doesn’t make your fantasies actually true.

        1. What do you with with stupid? Hopefully when trump fails again in November they will realize they have been lied to? Somehow I doubt it, What do you do with stupid?

        2. You said 60 ruled Trump lost. you

How tough is it for you to name just one of those? Or maybe Zero is the actual number

  2. I have absolutely no use for the lame stream media. You will not find the facts or truth on any of their news. It’s more like ‘we will tell you what happened, leaving out much information, and then we will tell you how you should feel about it.’ I don’t need anyone telling me half truths and then telling me how I should feel. I hate to say it but you’ve got to dig, pay the substack fees, and do your own research. As Mark Twain once said, “If you don’t read the newspaper, you are uninformed. If you do read the newspaper, you are misinformed.”

  3. As the Italians say: “Trust is good. Distrust, is better.”

  4. On YouTube, go to Scott Rasmussen, the one percent. This was a scary eye opener.

  5. When Bill Clinton signed the Telecommunications Act in ’96, many of us were saying that this ‘loss of trust’ was going to be one the negative outcomes. How it would lead to a tightening of narrative control, and some ‘facts’ would be favored over others. Depending on who was funding/running things. Many of the realities we face today seem even worse than we had thought back then. -Cat

  6. If a journalist has a love for his country and the principle of using the press to tell the truth without bias he is a true journalist in every sense of the word. However, if a journalist is so dedicated to his doctrine (tribe) that he will slant the news in its favor he is neither a journalist nor a patriot. He rather than Trump is the real threat to Democracy. It’s amazing how the use of makeup could cover up the ring in the nose of a speaker at the Whitehouse correspondents dinner. It seams that sniveling cowards are abundant in the left wing press.

    1. Trump lied about winning the election. You believe him. Yes, it’s retarded, but as an American I support your right to your beliefs.

  7. The West shouldn’t be afraid of Russian escalation. Russia should be afraid of Western escalation.

  8. “The poll shows that 47% of Americans have serious concern that news outlets would report information that has not been confirmed or verified”

An avid poll watcher like Turley obviously knows 66% of Republicans don’t accept 2020 election results. In January, The Hill reported that “among those who primarily get their information from Fox News, only about 3 in 10 people say Biden’s election was legitimate.”

A POLITICO/Morning Consult poll taken 8 months after the 2016 election showed 49% of Trump voters believed Trump’s claim that he won the 2016 popular vote & Hillary received millions of illegal votes.

Yet Fox News contributor Turley is only enraged at NPR & its allies “openly supporting narratives (including some false stories) from Democratic sources.” Hey, Professor, why so stone cold silent about the narratives relentlessly presented by Fox News & its allies? It’s remarkably easy to figure out why the majority of Republicans have serious concerns about news outlets who reported Trump lost the 2020 election by 7 million votes.

    1. Another feckless Soviet Democrat Anonymous coward is enraged that Fox exists and some of Turley’s columns are published there. To buttress and support Anonymous’s rage, he references the findings of the well known impartial news organizations The Hill and Politico.

Same trustworthy media who spent years assuring Soviet Democrats and their Anonymous Marxist Useful Idiots that the “Russia Dossier” was FBI verified evidence Trump was a Russian stooge – oh, and voters shouldn’t worry about that laptop belonging to the Family Bagman Formerly Known As The Crackhead Kid before they voted because it was ‘just Russian election disinformation’.

It’s childishly easy to identify the Birthing Persons who are Soviet Democrat Marxist Useful Idiots… even without the tell that they post as “Anonymous” because they don’t even have the courage of The Big Guy when he fondles a helpless child in the White House.

  9. Jonathan Turley, The New York Times subscriptions are in excess of 10 million and growing.

      1. No one spends $228 a year just for puzzles from a news outlet. Jesus, Iowans are stupid.

    1. “. . . in excess of 10 million . . .”

“10 million subscribers can’t be wrong” is not an argument. It’s a fallacy.

    2. The NYT is growing by offering bundled services. They realized more and more people were tuning out their news services. So no, the NYT is not growing from its news services. Remove their bundled services and the NYT News business would close shop

That is like arguing university enrollments are increasing while failing to mention that universities are now more than ever offering online worthless degrees none of which are in STEM fields, e.g. Doctorates and Masters in Education, Gender Studies, Black Studies, etc

The company’s unwavering focus on diversifying revenue streams, optimizing costs and streamlining operations has been instrumental in its thriving performance. To bolster revenues further, The New York Times Company is actively promoting a more strategic bundled subscription offering.

This New York-based company has embraced technological advancements to forge strong connections with its target audience. The strategic acquisitions of Wirecutter, a product review website, and The Athletic, a digital subscription-based sports media business, have significantly widened its reach and unlocked new opportunities in the market. As The New York Times Company continues to adapt and innovate, its prospects remain promising in the dynamic media landscape.

      1. “…none of which are in STEM fields…” So, you’re saying there are curriculums Trump supporters would have a shot at?

  10. Sorry to break it to you Professor Turley but the media does make a noise. It is commonly understood by the American people to be no more than cacophony.

  11. I have two serious concerns regarding what is necessary for this experimentin self-government:

    1. That number should be 100% distrust the legacy media outlets.
    2. Same with the government.

They are in lockstep with each other.

    1. Tin Foil Hat here.
The real question is, as Edgar Bergen and then Johnny Carson used to say when they hosted the TV show, “Who do you Trust?”
Ed McMahon would sometimes question the grammar and say it should be titled “Whom do you Trust?.

Do you trust the Media? I answer, “Hell No!”.
Outside of my family and a few friends, I don’t believe anything without first checking it out first, assuming that it was worth my time to check it out.

Microsoft keeps my data stored where I know longer have control over it, as does Comcast. Nissan shares my data with their business partners, and I can’t find out who those business partners are. The government doesn’t need to spy on us, they have their corporate buddies do it for them.
Back when the government gave out the Obama phones, everyone thought it was to buy votes. I think it was to keep track of them. Soon the government will be giving the illegals Biden phones. If the Obama and Biden phone people were smart, they would swap their phones out with others periodically, just to drive the spies nuts.

    2. And so you advocate FOXNews and vote for a sleazy used car salesman liar like Trump to run the gub’ment. Nice consistency.

  12. Losing faith in the media has been the motivation for your public relations and op Ed writing and social media influencing career isn’t it Turley? You’ve withheld pertinent facts from your op Ed’s and push pieces, and you’ve even parroted Barr’s lies about the Mueller report.

In short, you’re auditioning to be the front man for Project 2025. No wonder people don’t trust media. As all forms of media are becoming more and more tabloid driven in the trumpian age, media created trump and continued to uphold him long after he should’ve been put on a plane to mar a lago and only checking in when his next trial kicks in…

But no. It’s orange skid mark all the time in évery media outlet. And it’s you working it in what must be a very lucrative way, Jon.

    Party on

  13. The media has been complicit in the bloviation of every Democratic conspiracy theory about Trump in every news cast from the time he rode down the escalator. However, there is one conspiracy that they have refused to cover. That conspiracy is that the raid on Trumps properties conducted by the FBI was directed by the Whitehouse staff. Then they tried to cover it up through the use of redactions. The judge in the case has ruled that the documents showing that the raid was ordered by Whitehouse should be unredacted. The media had no curiosity about this mater because they were quietly sleeping in Joe Biden’s shirt pocket. The American people have lost faith in the media because the media has proven itself to be untrustworthy. https://www.realclearinvestigations.com/articles/2024/05/02/unredactions_reveal_early_white_house_involvement_in_trump_documents_case_1028630.html

    1. Hilarious. You’re saying it’s a conspiracy theory that Trump did not win the election, that Trump took nuke secrets, that Trump defrauded. Let us guess, you’re morbidly obese and live in a shack in one of those marvelously run MAGA-run states like Alabama.

  14. That’s the great thing about the First Amendment: so we could have a bunch media outlets that we don’t trust. This is its fruit.

    1. Anonymous said: “The great thing about the First Amendment… This is its fruit.”

That is absolutely correct. The propagandists are free to spew bovine feces and claim that it’s sirloin steak. We are free to turn up our noses and decline to consume it. Wouldn’t have it any other way. BTW, GFY.

  15. Here is a poll that says many Americans have lost trust in “the media.” Much of the media – Fox, WSJ, NYPost – is owned by the Murdochs. Turley appears on and writes for the Murdoch media all the time. The Murdoch media has paid nearly a billion and counting for defamation claims related to Murdoch media trying to claim that the 2020 election was somehow stolen.

Turley and the Murdochs are “the media” in which many Americans have lost faith. Let’s not pretend this has anything to do with NPR.

    1. Bubba, well said!

The hypocrisy is shameful. The professor takes great care not to mention how much bias and defamation his own employer has contributed for years.

      1. Fox & Friends is brutal, but it is far less noisome than the View or even CNN regular news.

    2. Bubba, duh, the people have lost faith in the media because of the leftist media being controlled by the FBI and the CIA, even to the point of telling social media what can or cannot be posted to their sites. You mention a rich guy that owns conservative news outlets but you fail to mention the rich guys who control the leftist media. You got your jollies for the day by getting in your hate the rich guy message. Envy thy name is Bubba. Shallow.

      1. JT makes no mention of Fox. I wonder why? Nearly a billion dollars paid for defamation? More lawsuits in the courts? Who exactly is can’t be trusted?

        FoxNews? My arse.

        1. Another cowardly Anonymous Soviet Democrat Marxist Useful Idiot flew his freak flag with BBBBUUUUTTTT…. MUH FOX!!!!”

Mentioning Fox was found guilty of defamation – right after another court gave Rachael Mad Cow and her network a pass, dismissing that defamation lawsuit by declaring it couldn’t be defamation because those listening to “Russia Dossier, Russia Dossier, Russia Dossier” Rachael Mad Cow KNOW she’s lying… and so it isn’t actually defamation because they view it as entertainment.

Silly of Fox to believe that precedent would result in the same outcome when they decided to fight the lawsuit. Soviet Democrat justice in the courts is a one way street.

BTW… does the feckless arse that posts as the cowardly Anonymous Soviet Democrat have any comments on how much CNN paid out in multiple defamation lawsuits? How many times they were forced to fire their lying “journalists” for fake stories – during the age of The Magical Marxist Mulatto Clown, long before Trump ran for office.

Must know about that – but predictably, no mention of that. And CNN and their fellow travelers have yet to apologize to this Soviet Democrat cowardly Anonymous Soviet Democrat for the YEARS they pumped the lie that their party’s “Russia Dossier” was verified FBI evidence Trump was a Russian stooge.

They have even more contempt for feckless Soviet Democrat Anonymous cowards and apparatchiks than for conservatives – conservatives they hate and fear; Anonymous cowards they view as moronic Useful Idiots.

    3. Bubba said: “Fox, WSJ, NYPost – is owned by the Murdochs”

News Corp (“the Murdochs”) also own WSJ, MarketWatch, Barron’s, and some other outlets that lean left of center to some extent, and are drifting further in that direction. All that you can credibly claim about them is that they are cynical opportunists who are agnostic about political loyalties. They certainly are not advocates for conservative or right wing politics, which is what you are trying to imply.

      1. George Soros has been on a buying spring of Hispanic radio stations across America including South Florida. Aside from his blatant left wing partisan slant, he literally owns a high percentage of public defenders who are now a bigger threat to Americans than the MSM by refusing to press charges on violent agitators.

The DA in Travis County, TX has dropped all charges against University of Texas demonstrators.
The DA Delia Garza was bought and paid for by George Soros

If only the Murdochs did the same thing: fund the political campaigns of DAs in America. The blood curling scream by Democrats would be deafening. The antisemitic hate speech, death threats and law breakers at universities vis a vis trespassing, tent camps, etc, are just dandy for the Left. Had their targeted audience been blacks, trans, GLBTA, Muslims, etc, the FBI would have raided their homes and thrown them in prison in less than 24 hours

University of Texas (UT) at Austin demonstrators arrested during a pro-Palestinian protest Wednesday will not be charged, Travis County Attorney Delia Garza’s office confirmed Thursday.
The prosecutor’s office said it has decided not to move forward with the 46 trespassing cases it has reviewed from the protest, citing a lack of probable cause.

“Legal concerns were raised by defense counsel,” Garza’s office said in a statement to The Hill. “We individually reviewed each case that was presented and agreed there were deficiencies in the probable cause affidavits.”

    4. Bubba and alter ego george check in. That subject matter dwarfing their intellect, do the only possible thing.

The logical fallacy of Ad hominem attack

That is ignoring the content and attacking the messenger.

If you dispute the facts, step into the arena of ideas. Stop with the 5th grade school yard taunts

    5. “The Murdoch media has paid nearly a billion and counting for defamation claims . . .”

Every time the Left rewarms that, it evades the WaPo and CNN defamation settlements.

      I wonder why.

  16. And JT is part of this misinformation group as his posts frequently omit pertinent facts. JT is a master obfuscater of truth. Do some research when JT talks about legal matters. He always, yes always, leaves out pertinent facts. Oh sure, he says there are other opinions out there, but he offers not of the facts that others are looking at. JT obfuscates the story so you will want to come back for more.

    1. The fact you leftists allow this kind of absurd behavior even occur at a middle school, even cater to it, only highlights how sick you are.

  17. Does anyone believe a poll on the media conducted by the AP-NORC group? The Associated Press? Seriously? Gosh, we asked the foxes if they liked chicken and they said no.

  18. Jost concluded his allegedly-comic routine by praising the importance of “decency” and thanking Joe Biden (!!) for his decency. Message: anyone who spends his time describing conservatives as “an existential threat to democracy”, trying to jail his main opponent, and censoring the entire American nation, is the very image of official decency. The well-heeled crowd of “journalists” gave him a standing ovation.

    1. It’s time to start calling our country what it is: a Republic.
      We are saving our Republic.
It is not a democracy no matter how many times Democrats and their fake news say so.
Time to re-brand as: The United Republics of America.
