Father’s Day on the Billy Goat Trail

I wanted to wish all of the dads on the blog a wonderful Father’s Day. I started my own celebration before dawn on the Billy Goat trail to watch the sun go up while hiking along the river. It was glorious, as always.  I have a few pictures from this morning’s hike.

The trail was teeming with wildlife, including a wonderful owl sitting majestically on a rock:

Coming over some boulders on the rock scramble, I came face to face with a rather large brown fox. He was a surprised to see me as I was him. After giving him a lot of room, I was able to cut back and take a snap:

The river was like glass this morning in the soft dawn light. It made for an enchanting hike:

I hope that everyone will have a relaxing Father’s Day. On my hike, I was able to think of my dad, Jack Turley, who was my best friend in this life. A day does not go by when I do not think of him and miss him. Sitting above the river at dawn, I thought of how I owe him so much in what he taught me. He was the most brilliant man I have ever known and the only man I ever truly wanted to impress. When he died, I could not imagine going forward without him. Yet, I now see so much of him in my own children and realize that the people we love never truly leave us.

Yesterday, Leslie and I went to our little local butcher for beef ribs. (Leslie is doing my favorite slow-cooked beef ribs in red wine and Guinness stout). The shop was packed. I asked my friend if this was the biggest holiday for meat sales and he said yes with the possible exception of Christmas. It seems people buy flowers for Mom and meat bouquets for Dad.

So, to all of the fathers out there, have a great day doing all of those things that dads do. Let the dad puns and jokes fly. They have to laugh…no matter how many times you have used them.

Here are some other pictures from the hike.

A wonderful life most always starts when the first man you meet is the best man you’ll ever meet. Happy Father’s Day! I spent mine on the water with both sons, Suzanne and about 3-4 seabirds. Then a quick dip in the pool followed by a cookout with the tribe. Glorious.

  2. I hope you had a spectacular Father’s Day, I love your columns describing the beauty of our land.

I think the best quote from this article is this one:

    – I hope that everyone will have a relaxing Father’s Day. On my hike, I was able to think of my dad, Jack Turley, who was my best friend in this life. That is true love and shows that you were educated in principles and you have known how to instill them in your descendants. Today I just remember the first great love of my life, my grandfather!

    Happy Father’s day!

  3. Billy Goat 2 almost killed us, especially that section where you have to slide up a cliff face on a tiny ledge. We were rewarded with the scenery in your pictures but we were a bit dazed by our near death experience.

  4. I loved your Father’s Day share. You and your family are lucky and have clearly benefitted from all that you’ve learned. And the photos are outstanding!

  5. First of all, to all the Anonymous cowards… You might want to say thank you to JT for standing for your 1A right to be Anonymous. He’s a better (and smarter) man than I am, for sure. If you can’t sign your name to what you say online, maybe just shut up and move on?

Professor Turley… I do expert witness work in cyber and IT and am constantly amazed (and troubled) at how poorly the legal community understands the digital world. I just published a reflection on why I think the government prevails in Murtha v Missouri. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

  6. Like Father Like Son? Biden’s Father’s Day Post BACKFIRES in a Gloriously Hilarious Way and OOF
President Biden’s Twitter account sent this out today to celebrate Father’s Day. And while we realize they really should put something out there, you’d think they would at least try and write something not so easily mocked.

    Like father like son?
    Great job, Joe.
    Ahem. …

Congratulations To All The Dads Who Are Better Fathers Than Joe And Hunter Biden
If you’re a new dad and looking for advice on what not to do as a father, look no further than Joe and Hunter Biden.

  7. Camille Paglia in 2013 at the Munk Debates on masculinity. She is like a machine gun, rattling off her points, with carefully chosen words that pierce like steel tip bullets. Her command of the English language is higher level thinking. The Left just can’t compete when it comes to intellectual depth nor dexterity. This from Camille Paglia, a lesbian atheist who loathes Hillary Clinton.

  8. Douglas Murray wrote an excellent piece along the same lines of what I wrote earlier regarding masculinity. Unlike me, he incorporated Camille Paglia. Just Brilliant. No wonder the Left hate masculinity

Things Worth Remembering: The Indispensability of Men

For Father’s Day, a tribute to Camille Paglia’s brilliant, unapologetic defense of masculinity.

  9. Jonathan: Speaking of “Father’s Day” where is Melania today? Is she giving her best wishes to the father of their only child? Nope. On Friday DJT attended his 78th Birthday celebration party in West Palm Beach. It was attended by a group of his MAGA supporters. Was Melania there to wish her husband “Happy Birthday”? Nope.

And Melania didn’t show show up for one day of her husband’s criminal trial. Even though she was close by the courthouse–in Trump Tower. In stark contrast, Dr. Jill Biden was in the courthouse almost every day for Hunter’s criminal trial. That’s what family members do when they love and care for each other.

Why will we probably not see Melania next to DJT anytime soon? Will Melania move back into the WH if DJT wins? Do I really need to answer those questions? But if you believe Rupert Murdock’s tabloid NY Post, where you write columns, they are pushing the bizarre claim that DJT’s criminal conviction has actually brought the family together. Here is the Post 6/4 headline after the jury verdict: “”Trump verdict brings family closer, including ‘a thaw’ between Ivanka and Melania. Source”. What was the “Source” for the Post article? They don’t divulge. That’s probably because the “Source” was DJT who wanted to plant a story that everything is just hunky dory in the DJT family. The reality is that it is not and has not been for some time. And that’s the dysfunctional family the MAGA crowd wants to put back in the WH?

    1. And you would call the Biden family functional and decent?
Biden let his dogs bite and attack his secret service agents 30 times!
What kind of person does that?
Let alone the rest of the drugs, criminality, perversion, debauchery, and bold lies detailed in the Hunter Biden trial.
What was it Hunter called his step mom, Jill? Oh right, he called her a “vindictive moron” and “entitled c*nt.”
      What a nice family, eh?
      Decency is back?!? Nope.
My god you are a useful idiot.

      1. “HAPPY FATHER’S DAY TO ALL, INCLUDING THE RADICAL LEFT DEGENERATES THAT ARE RAPIDLY BRINGING THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA INTO THIRD WORLD NATION STATUS WITH THEIR MANY ATTEMPTS AT TRYING TO INFLUENCE OUR SACRED COURT SYSTEM INTO BREAKING TO THEIR VERY SICK AND DANGEROUS WILL,”

        1. “Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything.” – DJT September 2005

          1. Where’s the lie? Did you not hear stories of what all those actress wannabee’s were willing to let Harvey Weinstein (and all the other perverts in Hollyweird) do to them in order to get their big break in a movie?

          2. There is no proof that Trump did anything to any women against their will — only a tape of locker room talk, or some absurd accusations, and then a fraudulent, bogus Communist show trial proving NOTHING. E. Jean Carrol is a lunatic who should be counter-sued by Trump.
However, there are credible accusations against Joe Biden of RAPE that the fake news have all ignored, for years, of course. Why would the news media ignore rape accusations against Biden? Because they are the fake news: Democrat Propaganda all day, all night, every day.

          3. I touch women’ pussies all the time. They seem to like it. Especially when i touch it with my tongue.

  10. I hiked thru Maryland on the Appalachian Trail but never remember anything as beautiful as your hike. My dad told me several times when I was a kid that he wanted to hike the Appalachian Trail before dying. He waited too long, so that became my dream. I thought of him many times on the trail, what he taught me about the outdoors and so much more. Thank you for your beautiful note today. Enjoy your dinner and God bless dads!

  11. No one is more important in putting steel in a boy’s spine than his father. You know that well, Jonathan, and so do I.

  12. Men of an older age are concerned about young men not appreciating the gravity of our current world starting with America. Many believe young men today, because of weak fathers, do not possess the skills nor moral fiber to defend America from her enemies.

We need unapologetically strong male role models, fathers unwavering in their commitments to their children but especially their sons, to form the consciences of their offspring. Fathers Day is meaningless to most Americans today because the archetypal father who many of us older men had no longer exists. The Left have destroyed our once sacred institutions but in no small part because Americans allowed it. So it follows we are seeing the enemy cross our US Borders because of weak men like Hunter Biden’s father

Eight people from Tajikistan with suspected ties to the Islamic State group have been arrested in the United States in recent days, according to multiple people familiar with the matter. The arrests took place in New York, Philadelphia and Los Angeles and the individuals, who entered the U.S. through the southern border

    https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2024-06-12/ap-sources-8-people-with-possible-islamic-state-ties-arrested-in-us-on-immigration-violations

Those on the Left like Obama have done grave harm to American institutions but especially fatherhood. Now the Islamic State is inside America no thanks to Barack’s “Jayvee Team” comment regarding Islamic State terrorists. The Islamic State is slaughtering Christians in Africa at an increasing rate with zero attention by Biden’s State Department, while defending Hamas for doing no better to Jews.

We need men who act like men but have been shown by their fathers what it means to own up to their roles that society needs from them. Otherwise we get Obama Jayvee Islamic State types

Obama’s comment on Islamic State as a Jayvee team:

At the core of Obama’s thinking is that American military involvement cannot be the primary instrument to achieve the new equilibrium that the region so desperately needs. And yet thoughts of a pacific equilibrium are far from anyone’s mind in the real, existing Middle East. In the 2012 campaign, Obama spoke not only of killing Osama bin Laden; he also said that Al Qaeda had been “decimated.” I pointed out that the flag of Al Qaeda is now flying in Falluja, in Iraq, and among various rebel factions in Syria; Al Qaeda has asserted a presence in parts of Africa, too.

“The analogy we use around here sometimes, and I think is accurate, is if a jayvee team puts on Lakers uniforms that doesn’t make them Kobe Bryant,” Obama said, resorting to an uncharacteristically flip analogy

  13. Jonathan: Thx for the Father’s Day greeting. Never was much for hiking. But I admire your tenacity in hiking the Billy Goat trail again. I don’t have to hike to enjoy nature. Our backyard consists of woods, a creek and an abundance of wildlife–deer, raccoons, squirrels, foxes, owls, etc.–all just a few steps away. Rabbits have made a home right under our lower deck!

In my form of “recreation” I will be heading to California soon to spend a few weeks with family and friends. Starts with long walks in the sands of Manhattan and Hermosa Beaches. Boy, do I really miss the Pacific Ocean! Then driving down PCH, playing the “Beach Boys” really loud, to visit an actor friend who has a beautiful home on the beach in south Malibu–with a majestic view of the Pacific. Our niece and her husband have a houseboat in Marina del Rey. They will come down to visit from Seattle. Sitting on the back deck of their houseboat– drinking our favorite beverages. Doesn’t get any better than that! Out of town doesn’t mean I won’t try to keep up with your columns to offer my inciteful comments. Don’t want to disappoint some of loyal followers on this blog who always have kind things to say about my comments (just my form of humor).

On this Father’s Day we’re going to celebrate with a big barbeque–ribs and “carne asada”–for all the neighbors in our cul-de-sac. We just completed a major renovation of our decks so we want to share that with our friends and neighbors.

Finally, I did want to point out the latest ABC poll. It shows 50% of of those asked think the jury verdict in the Manhattan trial was correct. 49% think DJT should end his campaign. Among “independents” 26% say it is less likely they will vote for DJT. The latter number is BIG because DJT desperately needs their vote if he expects to win the election.

Sorry, but I have to run. My wife is shouting “Get off the computer, you have to start the barbeque!”

    1. I seem to remember that the last ABC poll in 2016 picked Hillary to win by about 10 points.

    2. Run along and light your barbecue Dennis.

Dennis just makes shit up out of the blue

26% is the number of independents who say it affects how they would vote. 74% say it would not

11% less like to vote for trump
15% more likely to vote for trump

Trump ahead by 1% nationally. A democrat who is not ahead by 8% has exactly zero chance of winning the electoral vote.

Wonder if Melania will come to the inauguration.

    3. Just a couple weeks ago Dennis lived on an estate with a vineyard. Now he lives on a cul-de-sac In suburbia.

Now its A cul de sac with two indentured servants. Some would say slaves since his late mothers dying wish was that he “never let them go”

Dennis McInlyer can’t even be honest on father’s day.

      Pathetic
