Hillary Clinton is continuing her global efforts to get countries, including the United States, to crackdown on opposing views. Clinton went on CNN to lament the continued resistance to censorship and to call upon Congress to limit free speech. In pushing her latest book, “Something Lost and Something Gained,” Clinton amplified on her warnings about the dangers of free speech. What is clear is that the gain of greater power for leaders like Clinton would be the loss of free speech for ordinary citizens.
Clinton heralded the growing anti-free speech movement and noted that “there are people who are championing it, but it’s been a long and difficult road to getting anything done.” She is right, of course. As I discuss in my book, the challenge for anti-free speech champions like Clinton is that it is not easy to convince a free people to give up their freedom.
That is why figures like Clinton are going “old school” and turning to government or corporations to simply crackdown on citizens. One of the lowest moments came after Elon Musk bought Twitter on a pledge to restore free speech protections, Clinton called upon European officials to force Elon Musk to censor American citizens under the infamous Digital Services Act (DSA). This is a former democratic presidential nominee calling upon Europeans to force the censorship of Americans.
She was joined recently by another former democratic presidential nominee, John Kerry, who called for government crackdowns on free speech.
Other democrats have praised Brazil for banning X. For her part, Clinton praised the anti-free speech efforts in California and New York and called for the rest of the country to replicate the approach of those states.
Clinton added a particularly illuminating line that said the quiet part out loud. This is all about power and the fear that she and others will “lose control” over speech:
“Whether it’s Facebook or Twitter or X or Instagram or TikTok, whatever they are, if they don’t moderate and monitor the content we lose total control and it’s not just the social and psychological effects it’s real harm, it’s child porn and threats of violence, things that are terribly dangerous.”
Clinton continues to offer a textbook example of the anti-free speech narrative. While seeking sweeping censorship for anything deemed disinformation, Clinton cites specific examples that are already barred under federal law like child porn.
Despite the amplified message on sites like CNN, most citizens may not be as aggrieved as Clinton that she and her allies could “lose total control” over the Internet. The greater fear is that she and her allies could regain control of social media. The Internet is the single greatest invention for free speech since the printing press. That is precisely why figures like Clinton are panicked over the inability to control it.
If citizens remain true to their values and this indispensable right, Clinton will hopefully continue to face “a long and difficult road to getting anything done” in limiting the free speech of her fellow citizens.

Some of the latest MAGA/Trump/Vance lies just related to Hurricane Helene: that GA Gov. Kemp couldn’t reach Biden (that lie was told AFTER the Gov said he HAD spoken to Biden), that FEMA diverted money from disaster relief to house and feed illegals, that $1 billion of FEMA money is “missing”, that FEMA caps financial aid to people who are homeless now at $750 (that’s only the initial payment for temporary housing), that FEMA is engaging in anti-Republican bias in doling out assistance to hurricane victims, that there is “universal” condemnation for FEMA’s response (a lie), that there have been no helicopters or rescues in North Carolina. Most of these, and other MAGA lies are spread via social media–and it riles people up–which it is calculated to do.

In fact, the ICE data covered migrants who entered over more than four decades — including during Trump’s term — and most are in local, state or federal custody or had served sentences. All are tracked by ICE, incarcerated or not.

As his White House press secretary, Stephanie Grisham, told the nation in August from the Democratic National Convention: “He used to tell me, ‘It doesn’t matter what you say, Stephanie — say it enough and people will believe you.’ But it does matter — what you say matters, and what you don’t say matters.”
Then, there’s the lie about Haitians stealing and eating people’s pets, which has resulted in death threats, closed schools and people afraid to leave their homes in Springfield, OH. And, it doesn’t matter how many times City and State officials say this is a lie, MAGAs believe it–so, is this OK? Can and shoujld Trump/Vance and Republicans be allowed to lie with impunity?
Most of these lies are spread on social media, and they DO have serious consequences–so, according to Turley- it should be permissible for someone like Trump–a sociopathic liar and convicted criminal, to use social media to spread these lies. Talk about “losing control”–since the advent of Trump and his quest for power, America has lost control of right and wrong, of what qualifies as leadership and integrity, of consequences for constantly lying–and especially consequences for criminal behavior. Trump cheated to get into office, used his office to try to leverage aid to Ukraine in exchange for ginning up lies about Joe Biden, he stole classified documents, lied about returning them, spread the Big Lie, which got thousands of his gullible supporters to come to Washington and break into the Capitol, assault police officers, do millions of dollars of damage to the Capitol itself, with several people dead, he got fake electors to falsify Electoral College documents to say he won when he didn’t, and tried to get state election officials to falsify or tamper with election results. One of them just got sentenced to 9 years in prison, and this b(tch has no remorse, either, which is why the severe sentence–she tried to tamper with voting equipment to help Trump.
Turley wants to condemn efforts to do something about the daily firehose of lies that come from Trump/Vance and Republicans, using social media. IMHO, many Americans want to see the truth matter once again, they want to see integrity to count for something, and for a pathological liar to pay the consequences for misleading people, pandering to racism and misogyny. Regulation of social media is one way. Those who wrote the First Amendment could not possibly have contemplated something like a Donald Trump, who has no guard rails and no conscience whatsover, willing to say and do anything to get and keep power, and who manages to convince a substantial number of gullible people to believe his lies.
