Dumpster Fire: White House Press Office Faced Internal Criticism Over the Rewriting of President Biden’s Garbage Comments

Since the “Let’s Go, Brandon” incident, the media has been repeatedly accused of reframing news or rewriting words to benefit the President or the Biden-Harris Administration. This week, the White House Press Office and various media outlets like Politico and MSNBC have been ridiculed for denying that President Joe Biden called Trump supporters “garbage.” It has created a weird dissonance as Democratic politicians denounced what the White House and many in the press denied was said. Now, the White House Press office is being criticized from a new quarter for the clean up on aisle three: the Director of White House Stenography, Amy Sands. The White House stenographers objected to the rewriting of the transcript by the Biden White House staff to suggest that the President was condemning Trump’s rhetoric, not his supporters.

The President’s attack on Trump supporters was nothing new. Leaders like Hillary Clinton called them “deplorables,” and Biden himself has described their views as a return of the confederacy and the rise of fascism. Democrats have called the movement a modern form of Nazism and an effort to destroy democracy, round up homosexuals, and create internment camps.

The problem was the timing. As Harris was denouncing Trump for name-calling and insisting that Democrats are bringing the country together (while condemning Trump as a modern version of Hitler), Biden was literally behind her in the White House, calling tens of millions of Trump supporters “garbage.”

Fox News reportedly obtained an email in which the supervisor sounded the alarm on the White House press office’s “breach of protocol and spoilation of transcript integrity between the Stenography and Press Offices.” Sands went on to say that

“if there is a difference in interpretation, the Press Office may choose to withhold the transcript but cannot edit it independently. Our Stenography Office transcript — released to our distro, which includes the National Archives — is now different than the version edited and released to the public by Press Office staff…After last night’s process, our team would like to reiterate that rush drafts/excerpts the Stenography Office sends to assist the Press Office are not intended for public distribution or as the final version of the transcript. Please avoid sharing rush drafts/excerpts, which are subject to review and might create confusion among staff, media, and the public while our Stenography Office completes a thorough review process.”

The White House was criticized for adding an apostrophe to the President’s comments to change the meaning of the key line.

After the statement, there was an immediate clean-up effort by Politico White House bureau chief and MSNBC host Jonathan Lemire, who was accused of changing the language by saying that “Biden, in a Zoom call with the organization Voto Latino, said ‘the only garbage’ was the ‘hatred’ of Trump supporters who said such things about American citizens.”

Lemire was widely ridiculed. For many, it sounded like another “Let’s Go Brandon” moment. He later turned to the apostrophe spin: “The full Biden quote from the Zoom tonight, which is being taken out of context.” Accompanying the text is a screenshot of a transcript that has Biden saying: “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporter’s — his — his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American.”

The spin would have been more convincing if many of these pundits were not at the same time insisting that a line from a comedian delivered at a Trump event should be attributed to Trump (despite his later condemnation of any such view). It would also be more credible if Biden had not spent much of the last four years portraying the Trump movement as a new confederacy (before it was reframed as the new Third Reich).

When asked about the internal objections, White House spokesperson Andrew Bates only repeated the prior statement: “The President confirmed in his tweet on Tuesday evening that he was addressing the hateful rhetoric from the comedian at Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally. That was reflected in the transcript.”

However, Fox noted that it remains “unclear … whether the transcript the White House cites is the one that was altered and released to the press or the final transcript that was sent to the National Archives.”

Other reporters now admit that Biden said what he said but describe it, as did CBS News anchor Norah O’Donnell, as “a gaffe by President Biden where he, in his explanation, inadvertently called Trump supporters garbage.” The “inadvertent gaffe” ignores years of portraying Trump supporters as seeking to return the United States to the Jim Crowe period or pursuing a neo-Nazi future.

While various Democratic politicians have denounced Biden’s statements and Harris has said that she strongly disagrees with them, diehards like MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell mocked those who were critical as “some of the worst” or just ungrammatical journalists:

“To do so, they had to refuse to listen to the actual sentence Joe Biden spoke. They had to refuse to look at the written words of that sentence. They had to refuse to understand English grammar. They had to refuse to understand what a singular possessive is. They had to refuse to understand what apostrophe ‘s’ means. They had to refuse to remember what they learned in elementary school about the English language.”

It appears that the non-partisan, career stenographers who recorded the interview contemporaneously are also on that “worst” list of ungrammatical morons.

The mainstream media is now dismissing the entire matter as just the placement of an apostrophe. Yet, many of these same voices were supporting a full-fledged investigation into the transcript of the Ukraine call during the Trump Administration over “the use of ellipses.”

I was critical of that call and supported calls for an accurate transcript, particularly on such a weighty issue. However, back then, the accuracy of such transcripts was accepted as of paramount importance. Whether it is a matter of foreign or domestic policy (or an apostrophe or ellipses), the public should be confident on the accuracy of White House transcripts, as stressed by Sands in her internal objections to the White House Press Office.

One of those objecting to the use of the ellipses was Lawrence O’Donnell.

It appears that one person’s punctuation is another person’s punch line.

  2. Once again, it’s down to what is truth vs. fact! First what is Fact, the old statement “The Fact of the Matter” or the inverse “Matter of Fact” …” are subject to an individual’s truths of the matter. I use the silly example of the complexity in determining Facts which are undeniable, to Truth which is in the Eye of beholder. On to President Biddy, having witnessed the progressive decline of the Mind of my Mother-in-Law I can say truth of feelings was never tempered to the situation. She could not lie as that would have required concerted thought, this is how I see the Garbage statement.

  3. One of last night’s costumed trick or treaters is confirmed to have been none other than the hapless Joe Biden himself. The word is he was let out of confinement to campaign for Harris/Walz. They should have known it would fail miserably.

  4. One should take Biden’s past comments into account. In the past he has basically stated that Republicans are all Plantation owners who want to put black people back in chains. Considering such a statement why should we be surprised when his says that anyone who votes for Trump is just garbage. Harris is now saying that she does not feel the same way but she sat in the Whitehouse and nodded her head after every utterance that flowed from Biden’s mouth. The fact is that Joe and Kamala have both said that we are Nazis and racists.
So much for “when they go low we go higher.” Hows all that joy working out for you. Are you feeling all that joy at the gas pump and the grocery store?

  5. Well stated. Reminds me of how they went on about Madison Square Garden. The Average American sees MSG as Monosodium Glutamate, not as a place where political rallies are compared to Nazi meetings held in 1939. https://tinyurl.com/43hb85rd

    Ephesians 5:22-33

“22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.”

    – Mark Cuban

    1. <<Ephesians 5:22-33

A citation which is generally misunderstood. Not pointing any fingers here, but the entire context is necessary to understand the full meaning of the citation.
The context does not stop at verse 24.

"25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing[a] her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body. 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”[b] 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband."

Understanding that the wives are indeed to submit to the husbands authority, however, the husband is commanded to love the wife as Christ loved the Church. So how did Christ love the Church?

He willingly gave his life for it, fully knowing in advance the entirety of detail he was facing involving the brutal torture, humiliation, betrayal, abandonment, scorn and ridicule, from his own people and followers in his forthcoming death. It also means, the husband would never, for any reason, do anything that would cause their wife to falter in her faith, to doubt her faith, to fear, to anger, to have any blemish what-so-ever about her reputation, honor, trustworthiness, character, or otherwise cause anyone to doubt her in any manner among her community, family, and or friends. Furthermore, to ensure that she was in all respects imaginable, taken care of by her husband first and foremost, in the same manner as the husband takes care of himself. If food was scarce, then the husband would ensure the wife has meat when he might have none. Ensure the wife has water when he has none. Ensure the wife has a place to safely sleep, when he has none, and so on.

Meaning, he, the husband who must follow the words of Jesus as were proscribed in scripture, all scripture, not just Ephesians 5. How many husbands do you know of that fully love their wives to this extent? 10, 12, 15, maybe two dozen. How many husbands are there on the Earth?

There's no mansplaining allowed anywhere in this.

Many quote Ephesians 5:22-24, but leave out the most important part, 24-33. Which also require one to fully understand the plethora of connected scriptures in both the old, and the new, testament of the Bible that have bearing on the words spoken in Ephesians.

Again, not pointing any fingers, but this particular citation is far more difficult to understand than society generally gets, let alone follows, when one fully comprehends what Ephesians 5 requires of a husband. Society generally uses it do declare domination of the husband over the wife, and nothing could be further from the truth.

  7. Dear Mr. Turley, great comments by the Trump supporters here. I will only add that the Left Wing Media will not give Mr. Trump any breathing room regarding any comment or idea he may bring forth. Both are immediately condemned and ridiculed. My husband and I have voted early here for Mr. Trump in Wisconsin. Thank goodness this election is almost over. I will be glad not to have my mailbox stuffed full of lying liberal political literature.

  8. * Look on the bright side. After the election Harris or Trump there will be a NEW WH PRESS READER, GBYE CRINGE KARINE!

It’s just sociopathic criminals. It’s Satan’s (Satans’) playground. These are hearts revealed.

For Halloween I dressed up as Dr. Rachel Levine.

    1. You must have spent a lot of time rummaging through the discard piles at Goodwill…

  9. As a fellow U of C law graduate but also a clergyman, I am rather dismayed at the subtle endorsing of Trump I read in your last two columns. I thought you both too intelligent and too principled for that.

    1. Some of the resident trolls here are immediately given away by their writing style. Such as you, moron

    2. “Dismayed” by someone else’s “subtle endorsing” of Trump (who at the moment happens to be the only person who can bring sanity back to the US government and diminish the power of the corrupt elites currently occupying positions of authority)?

“Subtle endorsement” of someone who has a track record of secure borders, historically low inflation and unemployment, energy independence, and no new wars? And you’re “dismayed” by the prospect of those good outcomes returning? You prefer the current dystopian landscape Biden-Harris has given us, where America goes bankrupt funding forever wars and there is a high risk of nuclear annihilation?

Wow, your mental health issues are more serious than politics.

    3. “As a fellow U of C law graduate . . .”

      JT graduated from Northwestern Law.

      Nice try, though.

    4. John A. Johnson sanctimoniously posted: As a fellow U of C law graduate but also a clergyman, I am rather dismayed at the subtle endorsing of Trump

I am far too jaded at this point to be surprised that a self-identifying clergyman, given the binary choice that will be resolved sometime at the end of Election Season, would have real or feigned dismay that Christians would prefer Trump rather than Harris, who has been in lockstep with Joe Biden all the way.

It doesn’t matter whether they cosplay as being intelligent or principled – it’s what they do and the choices they make in life that mark them for what they are.

Better the Kamala Harris who cackles with glee at treating pro-life protesters worse than their administration treated murderers, rapists, and child molesters?

Better the Kamala Harris who crows with delight at the thought of possibly going around SCOTUS and federally mandating elective birth control abortions right up to the point where the umbilical cord is cut?

It’s a long list of what should dismay us about any clergyman, real or alleged, preferring what a Harris would do as president after seeing her history in office versus Trump after also seeing his history in office.

Agnostics don’t need a church to remind them that there are false priests who go by many names: Jeremiah Wright, Al Sharpton, etc… and probably one here as well. But for those who do follow the Bible:

      Matthew 7:15-16
“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?”

    5. Perhaps you should read Turley’s book. You would learn that he is very even-handed in his description of rage rhetoric, whether it comes from Democrats or Republicans. A clergyman would be unwise to point to his ordination as proof of higher principles. An attorney should know better.

    6. Another underemployed leftist who spends their time in fantasyland, nice to hear from you pastor, please go help your sheep.

  11. A pharmaceutical company tried to bring a new product, Abrain©, to market but Biden’s FDA and handlers would not approve it. They believe Abrain© would undermine democracy Democrat Demagoguery

  12. I just can’t get upset over this. The apostrophe version is highly improbable but not an impossible reading of the Prez’s comment. So, the WH says he meant the punctuated version. We can all decide for ourselves whether that is really what he meant or not, and we all KNOW what he meant. But, to call this some altering of official documents is silliness and a distraction from the real issues.

    1. No it’s not. Once official histories are being altered we are a step closer to Orwell’s 1984 — the future is certain, it’s the past that keeps changing. At some point we have to have faith that the historical record is accurate.

      1. Dana Perino told a story this morning about an occasion where she said at a press conference that after Karl Rove left his job that “the White House still had a lot of juice in it”. It was transcribed as “Jews” and Dana requested a reconsideration and got it. Supporters or supporter’s is certainly a matter of interpretation, and if Biden says he meant supporter’s I don’t think a revision is unacceptable. As I said before we all know what we heard, but since you can’t hear punctuation, this just isn’t a big deal.

        1. Those transcripts are archived as official documents by the WH Stenographer’s office, and there are existing standards in place to ensure that there are no self-serving, after-the-fact alterations made. One of those standards is that transcripts are never changed. According to the WHSO, the WH staff had two options: redact the entire transcript, or leave it as originally issued. Those staff members should have examined it more carefully before they published it in the first place. Now the official, archived transcript and what was ultimately given to the public do not match. Frankly, I find it refreshing that at least one WH office remains functional, and has some regard for standards and integrity. Too bad they are a unicorn there.

  13. *-The fact that American Leftists have so willingly distorted the truth about the Biden “gaffe” (he said what he believed) shows again a defining characteristic of our native Leftists: they are willing to SAY ANYTHING.

  14. For clarification:

The White House correcting a single apostrophe: Massive scandal.

Trump calling for Liz Chaney to be executed by firing squad: Nothing to see here.

    1. Is there pushback on the LC firing squad? I thought everyone was on board with that.

    2. This is exactly what liberals don’t understand: Trump insults corrupt politicians, whereas the Democrats insult the American people in general (“garbage, semi-fascists, fascists, Nazis, bitter clingers, irredeemables, deplorables.”).

    3. No Sammny. If you could only learn how to read, you would see the WH Press office altered the official transcript and distributed in a panic to cover up Biden’s “gaffe,” by passing the Stenography office and their official duties. There is the Presidential Records Act prohibits altering official transcripts. So, someone looks like they broke the law in order to cover up Biden’s “gaffe.” That is the scandal.

    4. He didn’t say that and your claiming he did is dishonesty that makes anything you say suspect.

    5. From Drudge: She’s a radical war hawk ” let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her, OK?”

There’s nothing in that that suggests or implies a firing squad. To me, it sounds like he’s saying that she should be placed into a hypothetical combat situation. Maybe then she’d see the moral consequences of killing thousands of American troops in useless wars.

      Probably not, but maybe.

    6. “Why credential any so-called journalists representing outlets, including ”

I didn’t read about that, but if he did, I support that. Of course, before she can be executed, Cheney must be duly convicted in a trial that is equally fair to the one Trump received in NYC at the hands of Judge Juan Merchan.

    7. “Trump calling for Liz Chaney to be executed by firing squad”

I didn’t read that, but I do support it. Of course, first Cheney must be found guilty in a trial that is equally fair to the one Trump received at the hands of Judge Juan Merchan.

    8. Sammy, you are lying. Trump said Cheney should go into the battle zones that she wants your kids sent to so she can see how she likes having guns pointed at her. Of course the liars in the media and Harris said Trump wants her executed.

      Sammy is a damn liar.

    9. Sammy, why dont you actually quote what Trump said in reference to Liz Cheney and her to be executed by firing squad? You cannot. That is a lie that is being spread by not only you but your masters at the DNC and MSM.
Here is what Trump actually said, “She’s a radical war hawk. Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her, ok? Let’s see how she feels about it, you know, when the guns are trained on her face. You know they’re all war hawks when they’re sitting in Washington in a nice building saying ‘oh gee, let’s send 10,000 troops right into the mouth of the enemy.”
There is no mention or even suggestion of a “firing squad.” He is saying the same thing I tell the anonymorn who is always calling for more death and destruction, if he wants WWIII, he should go down to the recruitment center and enlist in a combat MOS. Trump is saying the same thing about Cheney and all the other war hawks who want to send troops in harms way as long as it is not them or their sons and daughters doing the fighting and dying.

    10. I don’t support Donald Trump but I also don’t support journalists lying to their audiences, and when he says (paraphrased) “these pro-war people wouldn’t be talking such a big game if they were on the front lines” it is actually not the same thing as saying they should be shot https://t.co/kyVtfjkv8e
      — Kat Rosenfield (@katrosenfield) November 1, 2024

    11. The single apostrophe didn’t exist. It was created after the fact. I don’t hold you responsible because your mind is easily turned in the wrong direction. But then you say Trump called for Cheney to be executed by a firing squad. Again, the left is rewriting what was said. It is a blatant lie, but you again accept what is written. What excuse do you have for that?

Cheney is a warmonger. Trump said: “She’s a radical war hawk. Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine guns shooting at her. Let’s see how she feels about it. You know, when the guns are trained on her face.” Why aren’t you in Ukraine risking your worthless life? No, you prefer young men and women to die in your place.

Guess what, Sammy? Most of the nation knows that fools and liars stand for Kamala, so the lies only reemphasize the irresponsibility of today’s Democrats.

Keep providing statements that never happened. You are known as a joke.

  15. Historically speaking, if we look at Biden’s public statements, congressional arguments, efforts to resist desegregation, his “high tech lynching,” and consider that Jim Crow has been central to the Obama political presence, it’s hard to imagine these two as likely bedfellows. As political outsiders, human garbage if you will, we assume then that Bill Clinton brokered this peace, as matchmaker, in effort to grow his coalition. Who, by he way, does not in acts and deeds himself appear to be anything other than a traditional Southern Democrat… but what we’re today left with is a party in such disarray, so factionally convoluted, that it’s hard to imagine even a tie that binds. Possessed of such obvious dissonance, oppositional views, opposing factions, one must wonder as to the thing itself, for certainly nothing can long exist opposed to its own self, or divorced from all identity. Biden/ Harris efforts to dehumanize exceed all imagination to the point all must wonder if they are human themselves, or but a machine, determined to eat all and everything in its path to salsify its megalomania. But I see little regard any human evolutionary characteristic… when does the thing become something its not? When it begins to engorge itself with the very beings it was born to serve. And that’s what I see in the modern Democrat Party and its culmination as “Biden/ Harris.” A sad state of affairs, and so distant, from the intellectual endeavor that began in “America” some four hundred years ago.

  16. In anticipation of Dennis McIntyre showing up for work here later today to drop Dennis’ Daily Deuce as he cosplays as this site’s version of Cringe Jean-Pierre, a quote from the instructions he gets from Dear Leader, Bribery Biden:

If you ain’t lyin’, you ain’t really tryin’

Did anybody expect anything else from Cringe Jean-Pierre or anyone else speaking from the White House? Anybody ask Cringe Jean-Pierre or Border Czar Harris who’s actually running the country right now?

  17. Facts – that which actually exists or is the case; reality or truth

I love headlines – “Biden is beating Trump on stocks. History shows markets do better under Democrats”

I know, I am posting this on a site where there are lots and lots of trump supporters that define truth as “truth = that which the cult leader says”.

Sorry, just because your cult leader says it does not make it true.

    1. “Sorry, just because your cult leader says it does not make it true.”

Just because your cult leader was an accomplice to the commissioning and paying for The Trump Russia Dossier doesn’t mean it’s true.

And just because your cult leader keeps assuring you he doesn’t know any of his family’s customers from the Chinese Communist and Russian governments, doesn’t know their names, and certainly never met any of them doesn’t mean this is true.

You’re here after being dispatched to perform here why?

To show us you have a history of being able to know what is true when it’s presented to you by your cult leader?

    2. “I love headlines — ‘Biden is beating Trump on stocks.'”

You also love to drop the context.

Inflation artificially raises the price of *everything* — including stocks.

If you were honest, and as smart as you pretend to be, you’d be looking at the “real rate of return” — not the inflated one.

    3. Actually, if by “stocks” we’re talking about the Dow, any headline that says Biden is doing better is just not true, or so marginally true as to be meaningless. I did this analysis a couple weeks ago in another discussion, and the Dow has increased by 45% over the terms of each Prez, I suspect if you checked it now, Trump might have a small edge. There are other ways to do the analysis that would favor Biden by half a percentage point or so. Just because a headline says it does not make it true.

  18. All they need now are 51 intelligence “experts” to sign a letter backing up the narrative and this should go away.

Joe Biden was using cheat cards before he was elected. He was carted out to the public because Bernie Sanders, Kamala and others would be perceived to be too radical.

    “Hey Joe!”

    “Me?”

“Yeah, you. How would you like to be President?”

“Yeah, sure. What do I have to do?”

“Read what we tell you to read. Say what we tell you to say. Take long vacations. Show up to the White House once in a while. Leave the rest to us.”

The Biden Harris White House is like the lip sync duo Milli Vanili. The press has largely remained in the left wing camp. Now, here we are.
