“We’re Not Going to Allow Them to Steal it”: Raskin Repeats Trump-Like Reservation on Accepting Election Results
On Bill Maher’s HBO Show on Friday, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) appeared to repeat his reservation about accepting a Trump win in the presidential election. Raskin said that Democrats will only support a “free and fair election.” Trump was widely criticized for the same position when he said “If everything’s honest, I’ll gladly accept the results.”

Raskin previously said that he would not guarantee certifying Trump and that, if he wins, he may be declared as disqualified by Congress: “It’s going to be up to us on January 6th, 2025 to tell the rampaging Trump mobs that he’s disqualified. And then we need bodyguards for everybody and civil war conditions.”

Raskin went on HBO to repeat his reservation on accepting the results of any Trump victory:

“When I say we will support a free and fair election, no, we we’re not going to allow them to steal it in the states, or steal it in the Department of Justice or steal it with any other election official in the country.

If it’s a free and fair election, we will do what we’ve always done. We will honor it.”

Remarkably, as the audience applauded Raskin, Maher added “That is the Democrats’ history: They honor it. That’s the big difference between the parties.”

However, that is not the history and Raskin knows it.

The certification of President George W. Bush’s 2004 re-election was opposed by Democrats and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) praised the effort of then-Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) who organized the challenge.

Jan. 6 committee head Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) voted to challenge it in the House.

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) sought to block certification of the 2016 election result.

Raskin also insisted on CNN that the effort to prevent citizens from voting for Trump is the very embodiment of democracy: “If you think about it, of all of the forms of disqualification that we have, the one that disqualifies people for engaging in insurrection is the most democratic because it’s the one where people choose themselves to be disqualified.”

Democrats not only sought to strip Trump from the ballot this election, but sought to cleanse ballots of 126 House members.

We are already seeing an ominous uptick of challenges, which I discuss in my column this weekend. There are also new allegations of systemic fraudulent registrations in multiple districts.

Raskin presumably expects any voters to protest “peacefully” if they are declared the losers.

I am leaving for New York today to join in the coverage. This could prove a long night, if not a long week.

    For 3 election cycles Democrats have been trying to buck a seismic political realignment in this country.

    No one in their right mind would expect a Harris presidency to be much of an improvement over Biden.
    Harris can not think of a single Biden policy that she would have changed.

    If Harris manages to get elected and continues as Biden did – she will have a disasterous presidency.
    Republican gains in the working class will accelerate and 2026 and 2028 will be bloodbaths for democrats.

    The democratic party would have been better off to re-asses after Clinton lost to Trump.

        using that input and logic, judgement and an understanding of probabilities. Come up with answers that work well.

        The worst mistake we made with covid was listening to so called government public health experts.

        Aside from quite literally being wrong about pretty close to everything within their own area of expertise – and in most instances being predictably wrong – based on math and probabilities, more important still was that there is almost no problem in the world that is confined to a single narrow domain.
        Our government public health experts knew little or nothing about economics, They know little about child development and education, they knew little about unemployment drug addiction or suicide. They knew little about thousands of things outside their narrow field of expertise that were sometimes more important than Covid itself.
        Had the government public health experts – been right within their own fields – following their advice on Covid STILL would have proved disasterous.

The first challenge took place in 2000 elections when the Gore campaign challenged the vote results in certain Florida counties.         There is a great deal of concern because Trump is riding a massive political realignment in the US.
        The support he gains and the support he loses are quite different from normal elections.

        There is very little doubt that Harris is going to do incredibly well among white single women under 40.
        There is also little doubt that Trump is going to do well among very large numbers of traditionally democrat demographics.
        There is very little doubt that Trump supporters are coming out in droves.
        Just as they did in 2016 and 2020.

        There is a great deal of doubt as to whether Democratic claims of high enthusiasm are real.
        They were not in 2016.
        They were lower than expected in 2020.

        All the pre-electionday indica of democratic enthusiasm are DOWN and Republican enthusiasm are UP.

        It is possible that democrats could show up at the polls on election day as they never have before.
        It is not likely.
        It is possible that to get early voting numbers up – Republicans have canabilized their traditional election day tsunami.
        It is not likely.

        It is possible that Harris pulls this off. Trump nearly pulled a much more difficult come from behind wind in 2020,

        The real big question is whether Democrats can get their voters to their polls in historic numbers on Tuesday.

        Again the norms have been disrupted over the past decade.
        Today it is normal for the bulk of democrats to vote by mail.
        If that holds – Trump will not merely win, but it will be a landslide – democrat mailin and early voting is WAY DOWN.
        Republican mailin and early voting is WAY UP.

        But miracles favoring democrats on election day are still possible.
        Just unlikely.

      This part of Alford’s story doesn’t really add anything to what we already know about Kennedy. Nor does it really change my opinion of the 35th president. But this part does:

      Dave Powers was sitting poolside while the President and I swam lazy circles around each other, splashing playfully. Dave had removed his jacket and loosened his tie in the warm air of the pool, but he was otherwise fully clothed. He was sitting on a towel, with his pants leg rolled up, and his bare feet dangling in the water.

      The President swam over and whispered in my ear. “Mr. Powers looks a little tense,” he said. “Would you take care of it?”

      It was a dare, but I knew exactly what he meant. This was a challenge to give Dave Powers oral sex. I don’t think the President thought I’d do it, but I’m ashamed to say that I did. It was a pathetic, sordid, scene, and is very hard for me to think about today. Dave was jolly and obedient as I stood in the shallow end of the pool and performed my duties. The President silently watched.

      Afterwards, Alford says she was “deeply embarrassed,” and as she climbed out of the pool she “could hear Dave speak in as stern a tone as I ever heard him use with his boss. ‘You shouldn’t have made her do that,’ Dave said. ‘I know, I know,’ I heard the President say. Later, a chastened President Kennedy apologized to us both.” Alford believes that Kennedy showed “his darker side … when we were among men he knew. That’s when he felt a need to display his power over me.” Kennedy didn’t just have a thing for Social Register girls; he had a thing for humiliating Social Register girls. He also had a thing for humiliating his fellow Irishman, Dave Powers.

  19. This could prove a long night, if not a long week.

    We are feeling pretty good about the upcoming week, mostly because we finally left Richmond and now live in the rural country. Last week one of our new rural friends told us how locals are preparing for next week: stock up on food and ammo, avoid driving anywhere near big cities, and band together to protect family and home. So at this point, we’re feeling pretty good. True story.

            Revenues are up – because prices are up. Expenses are up because costs are up. The producer price index – the costs manufacturers have to pay for the goods they sell are up atleast as much as inflation.

            There is little doubt that large scale immigration will grow the economy.
            The laws of supply and demand dictate that if there is a large supply of low skill labor the market will respond by creating a demand for unskilled labor.

            It might be be good for consumers who will get some goods cheaper.
            It will be good for those who own these businesses that produce cheap goods with low skilled labor.
            It will not be very good for working class US citizens who will have their wages significantly depressed.

            It should be ZERO surprise why Trump has made huge gains among the working class.

            My point is that aside from some benefit to consumers the economic benefits of mass immigration will be to the immigrants themselves and to the uber rich who you claim to hate.

            Mass immigration will not increase your standard of living – it will decrease standard of living overall.
            GDP/PPP goes DOWN with mass immigration – that is simple math.

            Wall street and the bond markets already priced in a Trump victory.
            They could be wrong, but markets tend to be conservative.

            Why do you expect that under Trump the economy will go south ?

            Trump has made pretty clear what he intends to do.
            Stem the flow of illegals. That will drive unskilled wages up.
            Reduce government burdens on energy production.
            That will decrease the cost of energy which decreases costs throughout the economy.
            That also decreases the global influence of Russian and mideastern countries such as Iran.
            He plans on cutting federal spending. That is incredibly difficult and I doubt he will accomplish it.
            But atleast he will slow the rate of increase.
            he will substantially reduce government burdens on the economy – as he did in his first term which resulted in an average 1.5% increase in REAL gdp/year.

      It is one thing for Politicians to exagerate. It is altogether different for those engaged in fact checking to play word games.

      While Harris is doing better than Biden was in terms of attendance at rallies – she is NOT getting the same numbers Trump is – or even close and she is only doing 1/3 to 2/3 the events that Trump is – you can compare their schedules and you can compare photos.

          It is highly unlikely – but not impossible.

          I hope Trump wins – but unlike the remarks of Trump and many others it is not the end of the world if he does not.
          JUust as Trump is not Hitler, it is unlikely that Harris will be significantly worse than Biden.
          That is bad, but the country survived.
          It will survive 4 years of Harris.

          And another 4 years of democratic failure will likely result in a GOP that can not be defeated.

          I would prefer not to have to live through the misery of 4 more years of Harris, and I think that the odds are heavily against that.

John Say – Usually, it is true that the selection of a President does not have a profound effect on the well-being of the country, at least during the that person’s four year administration. But there is a different context here. With North Korea seemingly entering the Russia-Ukraine war on Russia’s side, the possiblility of nuclear war has increased. The North Korea regime is actually crazy enough to threaten the use of nuclear weapons, and the threats, if we are not careful, can turn into action. The Russia-Ukraine war must be brought to an end. Harris will continue to allow events to drift farther along toward Armageddon. Trump will make a full-court effort to stop the hostilities.
