Inanity, Thy Name is Womyn: National Spelling Bee Adopts Alternative Spelling of “Women”

Babylon Bee

The Scripps National Spelling Bee has triggered a controversy after adopting the alternative spelling of “women” as permissible. Students will now be allowed to spell “women” as “womyn.” Parody and reality seem to have emerged given a past Babylon Bee skit (below).

The new 2024-2025 school year study lists include the feminist term “womyn” as an acceptable alternate spelling for “women.”

“Womyn,” however, has itself now been criticized as offensive. While some feminists wanted to de-masculinize the word and use either womyn or womxn, transgender advocates oppose the term because it is used by feminists who exclude transgender individuals. They also reject the alternative of “wombyn” as referring to a person with a womb as an alternative. That has led some, such as Jennie Kermode, chair of Trans Media Watch, to reject the term “womxn” in favor of “women” as now encompassing trans women.

A Scripps spokesperson pointed to the Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary, which has now recognized the alternate spelling for “women.”

Shakespeare might respond, “Inanity, thy name is womyn.”

Babylon Bee, however, appears to have gotten here first:

  1. As DEI is being dismantled, Merriam-Webster caught the end of the cycle and changed the definition of equity from “the absence of bias and favoritism” to this race/gender-based propaganda:

: fairness or justice in the way people are treated

often, specifically : freedom from disparities in the way people of different races, genders, etc. are treated

… salaries in North America have long been considered a private matter between employer and employee. … But a growing number of advocates say that needs to change, in part to address problems of gender and racial equity, but also to keep talented employees in the workforce. —Amanda Stephenson

The fact that more money is spent on white Americans than those who identify as Black, Asian or Hispanic shouldn’t come as a shock given a growing body of research around health equity. —Katie Jennings

  2. Jonathan: In DJT’s mind promises are made to be broken. Back in August he held a news conference with a table full of groceries. Remember that? DJT said: “Grocery prices have skyrocketed; how can a family afford that? So, when I win, I will immediately bring down the prices”. Then on the day before the election DJT repeated his promise: “A vote for Trump means your groceries will be cheaper”.

In an interview this week after he was put on the cover of Time magazine DJT was asked: “If the prices of groceries don’t come down, will your presidency be a failure?” DJT responded: “I don’t think so. Look, they [?] got them up. I’d like to bring them down. It’s hard to bring things down once they’re up. You know, it’s very hard”.

DJT hasn’t even been sworn in and he is reneging on one of his key campaign promises. For those on this blog who voted for DJT, do you feel betrayed?

    1. Patience Dennis. He hasn’t been sworn in yet. So to take a page from the Obama playbook, he can’t really know how much damage he has inherited from the Biden administration. Furthermore, he only said it was “very hard” not that he wasn’t planning to do it. I am sure you’ll be as proud to call him your President as I was of Joe Biden.

    2. * a tariff is an income tax for non domestic production of goods. Domestic producers pay an income tax. The money collected is the used to subsidize domestic producers bringing the cost of products down. It’s so simple even common people can understand it.

      1. “Domestic producers pay an income tax.”

So do international producers in their home countries. So now you want to force them to pay a double tax — which costs are passed on to those who can least afford it: the middle and lower consumers.

“The money collected is the used to subsidize domestic producers bringing the cost of products down.”

That is false. Tariff money is used by the federal government for whatever it wants. And as the sordid history of tariffs proves, they raise the prices of all goods, whether produced internationally or domestically.

That’s a lot of economic fallacies in just two sentences.

    3. Your good friend and fellow loser, Gigi, tried to claim that TDS was a made up mental illness by MAGA media. Yet, here is Dennis, proving her wrong, again. I mean, who else would come to a legal blog, today’s topic is the woke insanity that has taken hold of a national spelling bee and rant about Trump but someone who is mentally ill? And do it on a near daily basis? Only someone with the mental illness known as TDS. Thank you Dennis, for proving to the world your mental illness is real. Now, get some help. You clearly need it.

    4. Whatever is Dennis McIntyre attempting to accomplish through his unceasing appearances on the Turley blog?

Dennis McIntyre’s maladaptive denial is demonstrating his Einsteinian myth psychosis:  “Insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results.”

Dennis alights here from his ethereal hermitage multiple times per day, attempting to redefine and mitigate his devastating, nay, pernicious election loss.

Dennis’s irrational persistence reveals that his effort has failed miserably.

  4. My wife and I were watching a weekly television program purporting to be the FBI in action. The acting was fairly poor, but the script was execrable, appearing to have been written by preteen aged writers. I was complaining about it and my wife agreed but commented that not all television shows were this bad. I told her she was missing my point, which was that I could not understand why a multi-billion company could hire the idiots who write this drivel in the first place and then, having made that mistake, put such a nonsensical piece of utter tripe posing as drama on the air rather than reject it and demand that their employees produce a better product.

  5. Instead of arguing about relatively unimportant things, let’s argue about clearly unimportant things.

    1. If they can force you to adopt their language, you’ve already lost.

They turned killing before children into “women’s health”
They’ve turned castrating boys and chopping off boobs of girls into “gender affirming care”
They’ve turned gun control into “gun safety”.
They’ve turned changes in weather to “climate crisis”.
They’ve completely redefined marriage to include homosexuals pairing up.

On what issue that they’ve changed the language on have traditionalists/conservatives won?

      1. * IF a market can be created then an industry develops.

Ordinary people call it quackery. Chase Strangio simply became a VERY hairy female. It made her happy to be hairy. Nothing else, just hairy.

  6. People must have too much time on their hand and too few serious problems in order to bother about such silliness. They also seem not to know much about the English language. In other Germanic languages there are word for the human species as a whole (e.g., Mensch in German) and for male and female (e.g. Mann and Frau in German). In English, the word for the species and the male are the same, i.e., Man. Woman means a human with a womb. The suggested alternative, mentioned by JT, of “wombyn” as referring to a person with a womb, is silly as that is precisely what the current word “woman’ means. Feminist who want to de-masculinize the word “woman” simply misunderstand that the “man” in “woman” does not refer to males but to “human,” so there is nothing to de-masculinize. The hole issue is based on ignorance. What a surprise!?

  7. Political language sculpting is a militant, zealous tactic meant to exert control over the way people can converse. Mockery is the best response, since we don’t want such tactical experiments to be taken seriously.

  8. You’re a despicable cur, and your mother’s a whore! I’ll make sure you never work in this town again!

  9. Just when I thought things could not get dumber, woke leftists prove me wrong again.

    1. Thanks for the music, Floyd 😻 Give your kitties some head scratches for me.

    1. Thank you for posting this. If it weren’t for serious legal issues and serious people talking in the video, I would have thought this was parody. It never occurred to me that the wife of a GRC’ed man would now be classified as a lesbian and have special rights. Or that a GRC’ed woman who became pregnant could have her special privileges taken away because for some reason she would now be classified as a man. This is bonkers. The whole discussion was unreal and made my day.

  10. Imagine the amount of privilege necessary to have in order for the spelling of women to be on your radar. Imagine all the other things this person/these people have triaged then crossed-off their to do list to get to “womyn.” It’s mind-boggling.

    1. If society were to totally breakdown and we’d have to seriously worry about food, potable water, shelter, heat sources, we could assign menial tasks to useless wokesters, and instruct them in remedial English.

  11. Ah the return of EBONICS in a new and shiny WOKE Wrapper! Stupidity is like an asymptote in American education – limitless but never reaches an endpoint! The Decline of Western Civilization thanks to the “highly educated and enlightened” teaching class – MORONS!

    1. You beat me to it.
      YES!
The morons are back and about to be returned to the hole they crawled from.
This time, let’s seal the hole!

  12. This is a controversy best left to Rachel Maddow for a conspiracy interpretation, to Joy Reid for a racist interpretation, and to militant feminists for a sexist interpretation. For everyone else, let’s sit this one out.

    1. SCOTUS will rule 6-2 with one abstention due to being unable to define what a woman is.

  13. “MEN, IT HAS BEEN WELL SAID, THINK IN HERDS; IT WILL BE SEEN THAT THEY GO MAD IN HERDS, WHILE THEY ONLY RECOVER THEIR SENSES SLOWLY, ONE BY ONE.” ―
