The Scripps National Spelling Bee has triggered a controversy after adopting the alternative spelling of “women” as permissible. Students will now be allowed to spell “women” as “womyn.” Parody and reality seem to have emerged given a past Babylon Bee skit (below).
The new 2024-2025 school year study lists include the feminist term “womyn” as an acceptable alternate spelling for “women.”
“Womyn,” however, has itself now been criticized as offensive. While some feminists wanted to de-masculinize the word and use either womyn or womxn, transgender advocates oppose the term because it is used by feminists who exclude transgender individuals. They also reject the alternative of “wombyn” as referring to a person with a womb as an alternative. That has led some, such as Jennie Kermode, chair of Trans Media Watch, to reject the term “womxn” in favor of “women” as now encompassing trans women.
A Scripps spokesperson pointed to the Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary, which has now recognized the alternate spelling for “women.”

The war will end when the US accepts that Russia has won. The solution is to concede Crimea and the four provinces that Putin now considers part of Russia, to agree that Ukraine will never join NATO and to arrange for some kind of guaranteed peace. The latter is the biggest challenge. As has been apparent from the beginning, the longer the war lasts the more Ukraine loses. Biden had the opportunity to negotiate a much less costly settlement before the latest stage of the war began in February 2022 when Russia made a number of proposals in December 2021 but refused to consider them. He rejected a less costly settlement soon after the war began, in the form of the Istanbul agreement. This and the other aspects of his foreign policy in Afghanistan and the Middle East have been nothing short of disastrous.
When the war ends and for a while thereafter, check out where Zelensky is living and his life style. Even losing doesn’t come cheap for the people of Ukraine. My guess is that Zelensky will be living the fat cat rich life.

The donestsk provinces that Russia controls are declared an autonomus region of Ukraine for a decade or two.
The status quo in Crimea remains – nothing official is done except the fighting stops.
Russia provides some kind of enforceable promise that it will not attack Ukraine again.
The US agrees to help Russia rebuild its heavily damaged energy infrastructure.
Everybody can declare some kind of victory.
In ten more years Russian demographics will threaten to tear Russia apart, regardless it has a decade at most before it is staring down demographic collapse.
While the majority of the people of Crimea and Donetsk are of Russian descent, over time they have been shifting towards identifying as Ukrainian.
In a decade Crimea and Donest will not want to be part of Russia.
Crimea in particular is not possible for Russia to hold militarily. It is clear today that Russia ca not supply troops in Crimea without a land bridge.
Ukraine also controls the water needed for farming and most of the power for Crimea.

Why does Ukraine want to join NATO ? To get a guarantee that if Russia invades it, it will be defended.

It is really pretty close to a draw. I would note that in WWII Germany had almost split the allied forces and reached the atlantic – and STILL was on the verge of collapse.
Russia has to keep this war to approx. a 3:1 ratio – 3 Russian casulaties for each Ukrainian. It has been very close to that – which in the long run is a draw.
Ukraine loses if the west slows down thje flow of weapons. But Russia loses if the est keeps it up.
Russia has a HUGE weapons reserve – but it is actually burning into it – Russian is increasingly dipping into 60 year old tanks.
They are now getting 3M artilery shells a year from North Korea in return for food that NK despartately needs.
I can see Trump telling Kim Il – that the US will guarantee twice as much food as Russia, if NK stops giving Russia shells.
Alternately Trump can strike a deal with US shell producers to double or triple 155mm shell production.
Doing so requires the US government to cover the significant capital costs building more assembly lines.
And guaranteeing an enormous effort to replenish stock piles even after the war is over – that is why US production is not doubling now.
Just as Ukraine is done without foreign support – so is Russia.
BTW Russia is NOT winning – despite over 600,000 in losses – Russia has not taken another town in Ukraine in 9 months or more.
Both sides are exhausted AND dependent on foreign support that could easily end.

This is not about the spelling – I have noticed that many people in media don’t even seem to know how to pronounce the word – they pronounce “women” the same as “woman.”

Jonathan: During the campaign DJT made another promise. He would deported 12 million undocumented immigrants. DJT repeated Hitler’s racist tropes that immigrants are “poisoning the blood of our country”. The Q is whether DJT can actually fulfill his promise? Here are some reasons why it might be extremely difficult:
First, in his first campaign DJT promised to build a “big beautiful wall” to keep out immigrants. How much of that wall did he complete? About 3 miles–the rest was repairing existing structures. None of DJT’s efforts have prevented immigrants from coming across the border. This time around DJT claims the new president of Mexico would close the border. That’s a lie. She has said she will not close the border.
Second, the cost of deporting 12 million undocumented. That would cost a conservative $315 billion. And that doesn’t account for the cost of building mega-detention camps–or all the new immigration judges and supporting staff needed to process the undocumented. Does anyone really think the MAGA controlled House has the appetite for that kind of money–especially since they have pledged to reduce government spending? During his first term DJT was able to deport only about 1.5 of the undocumented. Immigration experts think DJT would not have better luck this time around.
Third, deporting millions of the undocumented would have a devastating impact on the economy because construction, agriculture and the service industry rely on the undocumented. If they were suddenly deported the cost of housing, groceries and other services would go up dramatically. That’s probably why DJT now says he can’t bring down grocery prices.
Fourth, there would be huge legal hurdles to deporting millions of the undocumented. The Constitution guarantees due process–even for the undocumented. That means court challenges to DJT’s plan. And we already have a backlog of 3.7 million pending immigration cases–many of which involve asylum claims. DJT’s attempt to deport millions of the undocumented would be tied up in the courts for years.
And of course, DJT has a long history of employing undocumented workers at his various properties (See WP article, 12/4/2019). Would he willingly turn them over to ICE! For all of the above reasons does anyone think he can fulfill another of the key promises of his campaign?
