The greatest exception to that seemingly inexorable pattern proved to be the American Revolution.
The first half of the book looks back at the American Revolution and compares the sharply different course taken by the French Revolution just a few years later. The book explores this contrast through the story of Thomas Paine, one of only two major figures who played a substantive role in both revolutions. (The other being Lafayette). Some of the facts shared in this book may surprise you, including how corset-making may have saved the American Revolution.
From privateer to pamphleteer, Paine may have been the quintessential American who came to these shores to reinvent himself after a long litany of personal and business failures. He was also arguably the most revolutionary of his American contemporaries. Paine rejected many of Madison’s “auxiliary precautions” and lived to see the dangers of democratic despotism play out in France to a horrific degree. Indeed, it came very close to killing him in Paris.
The second half of the book looks forward to whether American democracy can survive in the 21st Century. The book explores the impact of economic, social, and technological changes, including the rise of robotics and the impact of AI. The world is about to experience a shift in economic conditions that has not been seen for centuries. Those changes may bring about a large, stagnant unemployed class living off a universal basic income or other forms of state support. The book explores how the United States can maintain a “liberty-enhancing economy” to minimize greater class separation, wealth stagnation, and individual dependency. The success of the American democracy was due in no small part to the publication of Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations at the time of the Declaration of Independence. Many of the same political economic principles embraced by the Founders could hold the hope for the future of American democracy as this uncertain century unfolds.
Synthesizing sources from history to philosophy to the arts, the book explores how the lessons of the past can guide us through today’s “crisis of faith” in democracy and see us into the future.

Well if you knew how our justice system works you would understand that many protesters who are arrested are usually first time offenders and they get out of jail within hours becasue some can post bail or jails are too full to hold them all. A lot of cases or incident were inspred by Jan 6. Some where already being investigated prior to the riot because the FBI knew there was a lot of chatter on far-right forums and places like Signal and Telegram, or FourChan with white supremacists and right-wing anti-government milita wannabes conocting plans or discussing overthrowing the government.

They are not exactly wins. The Supreme Court is remanding the cases back to the lower courts to narrow their rulings. While DOGE may be getting access to the data it will still be liable on how it handles it. If there is a breach or it ends up disclosing SSA information to the public it will be liable to be sued for damages. Possibly in the billions.

The developers of AI won’t ever admit it, but they are clouding the strict responsibility-taking that has made possible a human-software partnership. AIs are imbued with non-deterministic behavior unlike all previous software. Their designers and trainers cannot and will not take responsibility for the errors and harms produced. Because of something called layered training (an AI has been trained sequentially by multiple organizations, each evolving the sum-total behavior, you can predict a free-for-all of finger-pointing and defensive crouching when the end user is harmed.
Technically, the various teams that designed and trained the AI will not be able to pin down responsibility when things go wrong. This is a reckless departure from the system of contributory negligence and evidence-based torts that makes a high-tech society possible.

Under SCOTUS precedent from the 1980s flag burning in and of itself is protected speech under 1A. Prosecutions have to be based on something else like disorderly conduct, which has additional elements.
The reason for passing a law. There was a time when the flag could not touch the ground. I’ll amend what I’ve said, the people can ratify such law in a federal election. Let scotus say otherwise. How about an amendment to 1A excluding any image or object , the flag itself shall not be used in denigrating it or in conjunction with denigrating within US jurisdiction.
I’m sure you are capable of designing such language and a process for achieving that goal. In conjunction with burning, ripping, destruction etc.

Burning an American flag is disorderly conduct in itself. The thing itself…
It can be depending on the surrounding circumstances. For example if someone burns a flag far away from anyone else, so nobody even sees it (except perhaps a cop), that is not disorderly conduct because there is no chance the action will lead to public disorder. But in a crowd where people could be incited to become disorderly, then yes. It could also be reckless endangerment if someone could foreseeability get burned. It could be arson or malicious destruction of property if the flag belongs to someone else who wanted to keep it, or it could violate a local ordinance against open flames in a drought situation where a major fire could be started, and so on.
Kansas, American leftists don’t this country and its freedoms. Take a look at some Iranians who walk around the flag and boo those who don’t. God bless America!
AI has not been imbued with Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics. That’s going to be a problem. I don’t disagree that the AI aspect of the bill is atrocious. I suspect though, they are terrified of falling behind the likes of China, who make no ethical considerations whatsoever.
My own concerns over algorithms are not the average ones (relying on automated software for literally anything truly critical is idiocy) and it’s a separate conversation, but agreed that modern Silicon Valley are collectively and utterly feckless, as is much in that bill.
