Sex and the Cringy: Celebrities Under Fire for Making Light of Abortions

(Image: instagram/@cynthiaenixon)

Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon is back in the news for all the wrong reasons. Nixon decided to virtue signal on abortion by sending out a picture of herself lounging on a boat wearing a cap that read “Make Abortion Great Again.” In the same week, “Smile” singer Lily Allen was laughing in an interview about how she has had so many abortions that she cannot remember the precise number. It is only the latest example of how the messaging on the left could be alienating many Americans on the third anniversary of the Dobbs decision.

Nixon posted the picture on Instagram with the caption: “In addition to kicking 17 million Americans off their healthcare, Trump’s big ugly bill will strip critical funding to [Planned Parenthood] for non-abortion-related medical care.” She then added, “And of course abortion is healthcare too!” before urging her 1.7 million Instagram followers to call their representatives and tell them “to vote NO on this horrifying bill.”

Even liberals wrote in to say that the cavalier attitude was “a bit much.”

For Lily Allen, abortions are so trivial that she lost count of her own. During a recent episode of her Miss Me? Podcast, the 40-year-old singer explained that she had several abortions before finding a birth control method that worked for her: “Abortions, I’ve had a few. But then again, I can’t remember exactly how many…. I think maybe like, I wanna say five. Four or five?”

Notably, abortions are actually up since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and returned the question to the individual states to decide.

What is striking about these controversies is how they run against the narrative.

We just passed the third anniversary of Dobbs. Gallup is reporting a record gap between men and women over abortion since Dobbs:

The gap has expanded since 2022 because pro-choice identity has dipped among men, from 48% to 41%, while it has held steady among women. Currently, 32% of women and 54% of men identify as pro-life.

Similarly, there is now a record-high 17-point gap between women (57%) and men (40%) in their belief that abortion is morally acceptable and a record-high 15-point gap in women’s (56%) and men’s (41%) support for abortion being legal in all or most circumstances. These divergences are also the widest since 2022 and represent a marked change from the two decades prior to Dobbs, when women’s and men’s views were much closer.

Overall support for abortion remains strong, though it has fallen slightly since the post-Dobbs rise. What is clear is that the issue was not determinative in the last election. Democrats put a huge emphasis on abortion in the Trump-Harris election. Democrats loaded up ballots with abortion-related initiatives or referendums to bring out the vote. However, they found that pro-choice voters supported Trump in higher-than-expected numbers.

Making light of abortions is unlikely to change that trajectory in the polls, but Democrats continue to struggle with media being driven by figures on their far left going into the critical midterm elections.

With the anniversary of Dobbs, there is no suggestion that the Court will reconsider its ruling or that the Court is expected to change anytime soon. In the meantime, in Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, the Court has allowed states to defund Planned Parenthood, which receives a significant amount of its money from the federal and state governments.

  1. Until America can have the actual honest conversation of abortion as birth control, the circular discussion will never end.

  2. Who remember Spy vs. Spy in Mad Magazine. That’s what this comment section has become with Anonymous v. Anonymous. Love JT’s blog and really enjoy some of the cogent comments, but it’s archaic. WSJ is better organized

  3. Abortion had nothing to do with Trump getting into office-and you know that Turley. Polls prove that the lie about bringing an immediate precipitous drop in grocery prices was the biggest factor.

Pretending that Democrats messed up by emphasizing abortion is intellectually dishonest, and is just another diversion away from the lying that was the real reason we are stuck with this narcissistic loser.

He also lied about not knowing anything about Project 2025, when polls showed that Americans disapproved of it, and then hired multiple authors of parts of it and immediately began implementing it. They had dozens of Executive Orders straight from Project 2025 ready to go that the liar signed-and he didn’t even know what he was signing—he had to ask.

Then, there are the lies about immediately ending the Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas war—both of which are still raging. He promised that the war between Russia and Ukraine would get resolved before he even took office. Now he has pulled the Patriot Missiles Ukraine needs to fight off Russia and is lying about the reason being that the US can’t spare them— military experts say this is just another lie.

The American people are waking up to the reality of what Trump really is— a narcissistic liar, a television performer with a massive ego who will say and do anything to get power, attention and praise. Polls prove that he, his policies, and his performance are unpopular and he keeps on slipping in the polls. The Big Ugly Bill is massively unpopular but Republicans don’t care. Midterms can’t come soon enough.

    1. And yet Trump is at the heigh of his power, with massive successes in international relations, knocking out the nuclear weapons capability of the world’s foremost state sponsor of terrorism, de-escalating a nuclear crisis between India and Pakistan, moving toward cease fire in Gaza, establishing a real border, bringing down violent crime, bringing down inflation, making life more affordable, getting men out of women’s competitive sports, and on and on. Keep dreaming your pathetic dystopian dreams, the rest of us will enjoy life under a real, successful president instead of the demented corpse and brainless word-salad cackler your party puts forward.

      1. More lies. Trump is an international JOKE–no successes whatsoever–the rest of the world sees what you MAGAts cannot–Trump is a big, fat, narcissistic liar. Iran moved the nuclear material out of the facilities before Trump bombed them–the bombs did serious property damage, but Iran’s nuclear capabilities were not “obliterated”–the lying word he used. We don’t even know where Iran might have other facilities to which the nuclear materials were moved because Trump tore up the Iran nuclear deal that provided for international monitoring of its use of nuclear materials to be certain they weren’t used for weapons purposes. Why on earth would we want to stop this monitoring?

“Moving toward a cease fire in Gaza”–what does that even mean?–did you forget the braggadocious lies about ending the Israel-Hamas war and the Russian-invasion war against Ukraine on “day one'”? Israel isn’t interested in stopping the bombing in Gaza or in stopping the starvation–they are hell-bent on killing as many Palestinians as they can and because we support them, we will be targets for suicide bombers and other retribution for years to come. Trump even mused about kicking all of the Palestinian people out of their homeland and turning Gaza into the “Riviera of the Middle East”. How did it benefit the US to get involved in Israel’s bombing of Iran, anyway? Trump could help stop the war by cutting off Israel from any more assistance–but, instead of doing that, he took away the Patriot Missiles from Ukraine and then lied about the reason–that the US can’t spare the missles–military experts say that is another big, fat lie. So, Russia is bombing the hell out of Ukraine–that, too, is Trump’s fault. Trump can’t even get Israel to let in unrestricted food assistance and medical supplies to ease the suffering of the Palestinians. Israel doesn’t respect Trump, either. Trump didn’t “bring down inflation”–the economy is contracting–and that IS Trump’s fault. Trump is NOT a “successful president”, and the American people know it. From “AZ Central”:

“Here are the latest approval ratings released about Trump’s administration:

The Economist shows that 42% of people are favorable of Trump and 54% are unfavorable of him, according to the latest update from July 3.

According to the most recent Gallup poll, Trump’s job approval rating was averaging 43% since he took office in this second term. His first term overall average was a 41% approval
rating. At any given time during both terms thus far, his lowest to highest approval ratings have ranged between 34%-49%.*

A Reuters/Ipsos poll from reported that, as of June 23, 41% of those surveyed gave him a favorable approval rating of his performance in office.

Rasmussen Reports poll from July 3 showed 49% approval and 48% disapproval of Trump.**

A Morning Consult poll updated June 30 showed 47% approve and 50% disapprove.

The American Research Group poll from June 17 through June 20 showed 38% approve and 59% disapprove.

How does Trump’s approval rating compare with his 1st term?

Trump had a final approval rating of 34% when he left office in 2021. His approval average during his first term was 41%.”

*Trump consistently polls less than 50%–that is NOT a successful president.
**Rasmussen is MAGA and is not deemed reliable.

        1. “ Rasmussen is MAGA and is not deemed reliable.”

Translation: a polling firm that has been historically very accurate when compared to actual elections shows Trump as doing quite well, and as such loser here just dismisses them out of hand.

Let me guess, you still respect polling outfits that had Heels Up Harris winning.

  4. Parents rarely regret having children. Much more often they regret not having them, or not having more of them. Everything else we create is limited, but children are new human beings and as such, their potential is virtually unlimited, particularly as it includes their ability to create yet more human beings. The older I get, the more I realize, the most interesting thing in life is other people.

  5. “It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish.”

“Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use violence to get what they want. That is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion.”

    Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta

On February 3, 1994, Mother Teresa was invited to speak at the National Prayer Breakfast sponsored by the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. President Clinton and his wife Hillary along with Vice President Al Gore and his wife Tipper were also in attendance. The room got very quiet as she spoke about the violence of abortion. But the applause began and became nearly unanimous, with four notable exceptions.

    1. Doesn’t it appear obvious Estovir, that RC should marry RC? RCs must be completely natural in all that’s reproductive. Do you feel and think RC should be imposed upon all people as the law?

    2. The Catholic church is the most evil organization ever to have existed in all of humanity.

Perhaps the most evil of all is Mother Theresa.
This woman claimed to be a “friend of the poor”.
Actually, she was a “friend of poverty”
She was single handedly responsible for more misery and poverty in India than can possibly be imagined. She used to point to the orphanages she ran, and claim that this is how she fought against contraception and abortion. If she really wanted to relieve suffering in India she would have been PROVIDING contraception.

It has been shown repeatedly around the world in poor countries that the single greatest method of relieving poverty and suffering is to empower women by allowing them to control their own child bearing.

    3. I’m not picking on you, Estovir, just facts. Jackie Kennedy had Patrick, a 5 month premature. She firmly believed she’d be with Patrick one day and Patrick rests next to his father. Lovely lady she was.

  6. C. Everrett Koop, remember him? You know, former Surgeon General of the United States and a practicing gynecologist said, “There is no medical reason to abort a healthy pregnancy.” To which I add, PERIOD!!! Having lost my first two children I am horrified by the number of supposedly intelligent women who refuse to use normal birth control methods. There is NO excuse for an “unwanted pregnancy”. Now, as to Planned “parenthood”. They do not offer ANY services other than abortion. Several years ago my wife needed to have a mammogram and I called PP to ask about it. The young female who answered said that they only did abortions but she would be happy to refer me to a facility for my wife at our expense.

  7. Overall support for abortion remains strong . . .

That assertion lacks precision. There are multiple things that may be supported, or not supported: actually supporting (liking) abortion, having abortion be legal while still not liking it – in President Clinton’s formulation, allegedly wanting it to be safe, legal, and rare, or wanting the legality to be decided state-by-state while still advocating that one’s own state legislature support its legality. It also leaves out whether the abortions being “supported” are elective or medically necessary, and whether they are done merely for convenience – e.g., having a baby would interfere with a pre-planned vacation – or for more serious reasons – e.g., the probability of the baby having a chronic disease. A phrase like “support for abortion” is fairly meaningless when abstracted from all of those other questions.

As a human being, I am uncomfortable with the legalized and violent destruction of an innocent unborn child, which strikes me as playing God, unless the mother’s life is in danger and thus both mom and baby would die without the abortion. As a lawyer, I have to admit that the Constitution says nothing about abortion and, as such, leaves it up to the states to decide through the political process – which is exactly what Dobbs said, so Dobbs was clearly correct. Even the Fourteenth Amendment, which prohibits depriving people of life, liberty, or property without due process does not appear to apply to unborn children, since the first sentence refers to persons “born or naturalized” in the United States, and the second sentence repeats the use of “person” in the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses, arguably referring back to the word “person” in the first sentence. With that said, such interpretation is not inevitable, and I could be convinced otherwise if there is a good supporting argument.

    1. *. The Netherlands has a very low abortion rate. They must be sober serious people it seems studying what they view as a problem and finding answers. No doubt their birth control attitudes are considerable.

The US is currently a sloppy place taking nothing seriously except individual wants. It’s filthy, marred and maimed landscape screams of self disrespect. Self annihilation or cultural suicide. There’s an element of just look-at-me , too.

Try to remember the flat rock goes on top of the fire to cook and how to make wheels as time goes by.

    2. *. The conception of the life not yet born doesn’t belong to the mother nor father. The mother is the ship that carries that person to these shores. She is the vehicle.

Once born, this person is in our care only briefly, maybe 18 short years before that person takes flight. He or she is only ours briefly to be loved and cherished and nurtured and missed perhaps one day.

Mother’s joined the workforce and the new people weren’t cherished anymore. It’s only 18 years. Brief and then they’re old, too, and retired and mother wonders where the time went as she’s stocking shelves at the local store…

      1. Availability to the poor caused abortion to skyrocket? Unmarried women are 85% of women seeking abortion. Poor and unmarried? Is that the marker? No data on males involved. I’d think for research purposes there would be data. Is he also 17-40 and unmarried?

Medical care outside of commerce isn’t there. Medical schools set standards. Insurance is purchasable as malpractice. The idea of forced purchase of insurance is overreach? Government is involved in medicaid Medicare. I suppose the government can decide abortion standards is such a predicament. Quite intrusive.

      2. *. I paid cash at a doctor’s office last week. Can you tell me what care I received? Search and seizure is unlawful. What do you expect me of having done? I am secure in my person and property?

State laws regarding abortion are unlawful? Will you seize me and force a blood test?

    3. The arguments are birth control, or religious imperatives or personal conscience or medical standards based in science of viability with assistance. Currently the law is the breath of life with assistance and second trimester viability because most miscarriages occur in 1st trimester due to health of fetus or mother including most commonly, birth defects. Elective 1st trimester abortions at will are tolerated. Miscarriages of embryos, blastopheres (?) go unnoticed by females and are common. Flushing seminal fluid after rape within 5-7 days is recommended.

      That covers it.

  8. “MY BODY MY CHOICE”

    Abortion is homicide.

    Abortion is murder.

Zygotes, embryos, and fetuses are sovereign biological entities; they are homo sapiens sapiens.

The zygotes, embryos, and fetuses cannot speak for themselves, but they all clearly demonstrate and manifest their desideratum and intent to live by the fact that they persevere.

Zygotes, embryos, and fetuses CHOOSE to live.

And here are some bonus scientific facts that prove it’s not just an organ or part of the mother.

During its early stages of development, the placenta of the unborn child secretes neurokinin B-containing phosphocoline molecules, which protects the child from detection by its mother’s immune system, because it can be interpreted as a foreign body and is subject to attack. This is because the fetus is of non-identical genetic material to the mother due to their different DNA.

Also present in the unborn child are lymphocytic suppressor cells which stop interleukin 2 (IL2) cells from signalling cytotoxic T cells to kill the child. The purpose of IL2 cells is to distinguish between self and non-self (parts of the mother and foreign parts). The lymphocytic cells would not need to inhibit the response of the cytotoxic T cells if the IL2 did not signal the feuts as a foreign body. This would not occur if it was one of her own organs because the response would not be initiated.

An organ does not have its own organs. The fetal heartbeat begins at around 22 days after fertilisation as I said earlier, and brain waves are detected at about six weeks, which means the unborn child has a heart and a brain. At seven weeks, all other organs are present, although not fully developed, which would mean not only did the mother have an organ with different DNA to her, but this organ also has its own organ systems, and so the mother has an extra heart, brain, stomach, liver, etc.

  9. Men persist.

Women make the men who persist.

Why would men allow women to vote?

    Why?

  10. In Other News: “Cat Fight Ensues Over ‘Who Had the Most Abortions'”
    ~+~
The mostly peaceful DNC staffing job fair turned into a ruckus when two women and a trans competing for the same consulting job tried to “one up” each other over who had the most abortions. Applicant Ann Hedonia claimed she achieved seven abortions and thus is the most qualified candidate. This was countered by Ms. Anne Thrope who alleged she had that many before she was sixteen. Trans candidate Skyler Schuyler interjected her betterment of the two by claiming that many before she transitioned from being a male.

The situation deteriorated when the three realized the hiring manager was not paying attention to them, and each desperate to be noticed, attacked the other. The hair-pulling and scratching from the Annes proved no match to the 6’5″ 275lb Skyler, who prevailed in the contest. But in the end it was Ms. Anne Thorpe who got the job, seen by the HR staff as having the most potential.

  11. Reproductive rights! If you’re talking about reproduction, how is that tied into abortion rights?

      AI Overview

Menstrual seclusion is a cultural practice where restrictions are placed on women’s behavior during their menstruation, sometimes involving being isolated in a separate hut or dwelling, due to beliefs about ritual impurity.

Examples of societies with menstrual seclusion practices:

Nepal (Chhaupadi): This practice, primarily found in western Nepal, involves women being banished to temporary shelters or animal sheds, called “chhau goths,” during their periods. They are considered impure and forbidden from participating in normal family activities and touching others or household items. This practice has been outlawed by Nepal’s Supreme Court, but it is still practiced in some areas.

India: Menstrual seclusion and restrictions are common in many Indian states. For example, among the Gonds, women may be forced to stay in shacks called “kurma ghar” or “gaokar” which lack basic amenities. In some traditions, Hindu women in parts of north India are expected to avoid the kitchen or eat separately. In some areas, they are not allowed to sleep on beds, enter the kitchen, touch male family members, or eat certain foods.

    2. *. Probably because miscarriages during the 1st trimester are not uncommon. Nature aborts so they assume it’s natural. Nature has reasons and so have they.

Birth control would be a more thoughtful choice but they don’t see abortion as anything other than a miscarriage.

Perhaps more birth control will be used now that abortion is more difficult. Isn’t that the conclusion drawn?

      1. Abortion aborts life.

Abortion is homicide; abortion is murder.

Life begins within the 24-hour, post-insemination period.

        Homicide and murder extinguish life.

Birth control is an entirely separate issue.

        1. Birth control use prevents abortion is the order of things. RC can’t use birth control. Nature’s way or the hellway is the order. Understand here that many think and believe they’ll go to hell and it’s a self fulfilling prophecy. This makes the subject serious and sterilization and birth control are forbidden. There’s no escape except abstinence. There’s no privacy either.

It’s to be soberly considered because they’re part of the culture as are the shrouded moslems, the atheists, lgbt. These beliefs are entrenched solidly. The pope is the ayotollah and actual belief in both religions is sharia law and theocracy. Don’t you know that?

It’s intolerable for them to live in a culture with abortion. There isn’t an apparent reason that anyone should know what anyone does unless it’s unlawful subject to charges. There are States that can charge medical staff now?

Many are just opting out completely. That’s fine, too.

          1. The theocracy isn’t part of 1A. Huge duh nor the constitution. Think of a rational plan.
