President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he may strip comedian Rosie O’Donnell of her U.S. citizenship. He has made the threat previously, despite having no authority to do so. In the United States, political critics cannot be stripped of their citizenship, and pursuing such a course would be a fundamental denial of constitutional protections not only under the 14th Amendment but also under the 1st Amendment.
This week, the President stated on Truth Social that “As previously mentioned, we are giving serious thought to taking away Rosie O’Donnell’s Citizenship. She is not a Great American and is, in my opinion, incapable of being so!”
When I previously objected that such a move would be grossly unconstitutioal, supporters insisted that Trump was simply trolling opponents. However, the threat of an unconstitutional act only reinforces the narratives of O’Donnell, who has engaged in false claims and conspiracy theories on social media.
O’Donnell has trolled Trump after fleeing the country in protest to live in Ireland. Most recently, she was widely criticized for claiming that the shooter at the Minnesota Catholic church was “a white guy, Republican, MAGA person. White supremacist.” She later apologized, but added, “I assumed, like most shooters, they followed a standard MO and had standard, you know, feelings of… you know, NRA-loving kind of gun people.”
Spreading disinformation is not grounds for losing your citizenship and would create a dangerous precedent. Indeed, President Trump rightfully objected to Democrats trying to strip him from ballots in the last election. To now claim the right to strip political opponents of their actual citizenship only surrenders the high ground to his critics.
However, Trump has also threatened to rescind the citizenship of former White House adviser Elon Musk and even New York City Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani. Both Musk and Mamdani were born outside the country, but received U.S. citizenship through a legal process.
There are narrow circumstances under which a naturalized citizen can be stripped of citizenship, but those circumstances do not include their political views.
In 1967, the Supreme Court handed down Afroyim v. Rusk, declaring that U.S. citizens can only lose their citizenship by voluntarily relinquishing it, or where citizenship was gained by fraud.
Beys Afroyim was born in Poland and the U.S. government sought to strip him of citizenship after learning that he had cast a vote in an Israeli election. The Supreme Court ruled that his status remained protected under the Citizenship Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution.
Likewise, in Trop v. Dulles in 1958, the Court ruled that the government could not strip Albert Trop of his citizenship after he escaped from an Army stockade in Casablanca, Morocco. While he turned himself in the next day, the government argued that (since the country was engaged in a war and Trop was dishonorably discharged), it could revoke his status despite being a natural-born citizen.
Chief Justice Earl Warren wrote that such punishment ran afoul of the Eighth Amendment and constituted “a form of punishment more primitive than torture” since it amounts to the “total destruction of the individual’s status in organized society.”
Trump may wish to challenge Trop, but there is no indication that the Supreme Court would seriously consider such a departure from the long-standing precedent. That is even less likely where the effort is based on retaliation for political criticism of the President.
President Trump is simply trolling Rosie after she trolled him. While he may hope she renounces her citizenship, which he would gloat over big time, he isn’t going to do anything to her citizenship. No story here. Nothing to see. Move along.

MOST of your idiotic claims are construction litigation – I am an actual architect registered in PA for 40+ years. The practice that I was part of built almost 3000 buildings. There were plenty of lawsuits.
It is Near impossible on significant projects for a sub contractor to sue an owner – and that is why nearly all these lawsuits were “settled” or dismissed. Sub contractors – as the name implies DO NOT work for the owner. They work for the contractor. If you are a plumbing contractor – you work for the general contractor – not the owner. If you have a dispute about payment – it is with the general contractor not the owner.
I would further note that the type of lawsuits you refer to are extremely rare. Lawsuits with merit in building construction almost always occur in areas where contracts are not clear – and we have been working on construction contracts for centuries so there are very very few areas that are not crystal clear.
Things like who pays when there is a problem caused by acts of god are covered in contracts.
Further in All construction contracts – Owners – BY LAW do not have the final say over payments.
Typically Architects and Engineers do, In some larger projects the final authority is a construction management firm, quite often especially today the Banks financing the project are the final authority.

For construction projects – the money for payment is escrowed ahead of time. This is done specifically to protect contractors. You can not even get an award of a significant construction project unless the money is already in the bank somewhere and while the owner has a VOICE in its disbursement – they are NOT the final authority. When a contract was signed – the money was set aside for the problem – usually by the bank the owner is borrowing from. This is done because no one is going to start a 100M construction project that could get canceled in the middle and then spend years litigating payments.

There are claims he was molesting underage girls when he was out of jail. Epstein was represented by Trump loyalist Alan Dershowitz. The plea deal also granted immunity to 4 co-conspirators. Is the outrage of survivors over this deal a “hoax”? Is it a “hoax” for the survivors to point out that if the full FBI investgation had gone forward back then, and Epstein had been brought to justice, that the suffering of hundreds of underage girls could have been prevented? Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008 and was re-arrested in 2019. Is it a “hoax” that Trump unqualifiedly took the position that the entire Epstein file would be released–until Elon Musk pointed out that Trump is in the file, so Trump had over 1,000 FBI agents combing through the file to flag references to him, leading to the conclusion that he KNOWS there are things in the file damaging to him? As I understand it the measles vaccine is about 90% effective, which means that if measles gets out in a school each vaccinated child has a significant chance (10%) of catching it. Margot Bellhere, Trump’s declining health has been on display for weeks now. Even pro-Trump pundits are admitting he’s not looking well. His walking alone is looking bad. Trump is old and like anyone approaching 80 years old he is bound to get sick suddenly. That is particularly true for someone as obese and unhealthy as Trump. I would not be surprised if he is diabetic and has high blood pressure. It would take one fall to compromise his presidency and his mental acuity.
