“I Hope You Die”: Montana Race Rattled by Latest Example of Rage Rhetoric

This week, I ran a column on how many on the left have discovered the joy and release of unmitigated hate speech. Democratic Helena City Commissioner candidate Haley McKnight is under fire for messages left on the phone of freshman Sen. Tim Sheehy, R-Mont., in which she hopes for him to get cancer and die. It comes on the day that voters are going to the polls in Virginia, where the Democratic candidate for Attorney General, Jay Jones, admitted that he previously expressed a desire to kill a political opponent and his children. As a measure of the appeal of rage rhetoric, Jones remains the leading candidate in the race, with most Democrats planning to vote for him.

In her voicemail, McKnight states:

“Hi, this is Haley McKnight. I’m a constituent in Helena, Montana. I just wanted to let you know that you are the most insufferable kind of coward and thief. You just stripped away healthcare for 17 million Americans, and I hope you’re really proud of that. I hope that one day you get pancreatic cancer, and it spreads throughout your body so fast that they can’t even treat you for it.”

She then left a litany of insults about Sheehy’s fertility and his children, before warning the senator not to “meet me on the streets.” She then added:

“I hope you die in the street like a dog. One day, you’re going to live to regret this. I hope that your children never forgive you. I hope that you are infertile. I hope that you manage to never get a boner ever again. You are the worst piece of s— I have ever, ever, ever had the misfortune of looking at … God forbid that you ever meet me on the streets because I will make you regret it. F— you. I hope you die…All that you have done since you have gotten into power is do s— for yourself.”

McKnight moved to Montana from North Carolina and owned Sage & Oats Trading Post, which she describes as “a successful Native American-owned gift store” on her campaign website.

What was striking about this story was McKnight’s response. She explained how her rage was righteous and blamed conservatives for making public a voicemail with threats left at the office of a U.S. senator.

In an interview about the controversy, she insisted, “I was responding to some horrible policy with some justified rage.” McKnight blamed Sheehy for not calling her back after her hateful messages to chat:

“I would hope that if Sheehy was so rattled by my voicemail, he would have contacted me instead of leaking my information to conservative news media the night before an election. It feels like a cheap shot. I’m one of his constituents, and you know, this message is nothing that I’d say to my grandmother or in front of any children, it was meant for Senator Sheehy alone.”

There is, of course, another lesson that many of us strive to leave for our children: you should speak with respect and civility in others in both private and public settings. Indeed, you should not talk to others in ways that you would be embarrassed to do in front of children. It is not the consequences that dictate how we act or speak.

Instead, McKnight insists that such threats and insults are justified when you disagree with others. She is clearly not alone. As shown in Virginia, many voters will still vote for such candidates. Indeed, many may be drawn to such candidates by such rhetoric.

Ironically, her campaign site quotes her saying, “I have worked hard to combat the loneliness epidemic in our community.” Raving at others about wishing them cancer and celebrating their death may not be the best approach for building relationships for the chronically lonely.

  1. This woman is representative of the cancer that is Democrat activists moving to Montana from their Democrat voting home districts in other states and infecting Montana cities like Helena, Bozeman, and of course the university city of Missoula. Missoula, proudly flying the Woke Alphabet Sex Pride Tribe flag, passed gun ban laws violating the 2nd Amendment in Montana of all states. The fact those laws were shot down faster than Missoula could convert all city street sidewalk markings to Alphabet Sex Pride Tribe stripes, does not change the fact the Missoula mayor and city council could easily get away with doing that with interstate immigrants there from California, New Jersey, New York, etc.

Like the hajjis, people like this woman coming to conservative, Constitutional states like Montana immediately begin to attempt to convert those states to the belief systems in power that they came from and which they want to mirror.

This MIGHT get her elected in Montana. But she and her actions are not going to increase support for the Democrats in Montana in this or upcoming elections.

    1. I’m sorry for your state. Democrats are destroying everything everywhere they go. Why people vote for them, haven’t any clue. All we can do is stay with common sense and help get it out.

      1. Wayne – as Dennis Prager says, the Left ruins everything it touches. SNL is unwatchable, as are the late-night shows, which used to be funny before they became left-wing political. Girls’ and women’s competitive sports are destroyed by the Left putting biological males in to compete with biological females and invade their locker rooms and showers. Ten million unvetted immigrants, climate cultism destroying the energy sectors in European countries and making them poor (same here until those lunatic policies were recently reversed), defund the police, no cash bail, unbearable taxes, embrace of Islamist terrorism on college campuses and elsewhere, lawfare weaponization of the legal system and two tiers of justice, assassination chic culture, destruction of once-great cities such as San Francisco, and the list goes on and on. The Democrat party, and the liberal-Left parties in Europe, are the parties of death and destruction. When they get their death grip on power, they destroy everything worth preserving. Civilization is in an existential battle with the forces of death and darkness, currently manifested in America as the Democrat Party.

      2. Wayne Trull says: I’m sorry for your state. Democrats are destroying everything everywhere they go.

You don’t need to feel sorry for Montana. All of our Senators and Congressman are Republicans – not many states can say that. Our state governor is Republican, as is our state government majority Republican. Again, not many states can say that either.

But that doesn’t mean we don’t have local infections of Democrats in cities like Missoula, Helena, Bozeman, etc. These are cities with infestations of expats and students from out of state. Wyoming, that ended up puking out Liz Cheney is a similar state with both Federal and State Republicans – and a few infected cities like Jackson Hole.

I think the problem we’ve made is treating this infestation too nice and with too much tolerance.

  2. American liberals – compare your rhetoric with your behavior. Are you humanistic idealists or are you full-blown thugs? I suggest that you are more accurately defined by your actions than by your words.

    1. Edward – I would respectfully suggest that ever since 2016 there has been no daylight between their actions and words: both have been equally thuggish.

  3. In Other News: “Politicians Change Party Theme Song to ‘Napalm Sticks to Kids'”
    ~+~
Hoping to capture and fully convey the spirit and essence for what they stand for, party leadership adopted the Vietnam War song “Napalm Sticks to Kids” as both its theme song and party platform.

Party Chairperson Jody Jones said today, “We felt that no other song expressed our message better than this. We want to go beyond simply wishing wives and children of our opponets be just killed, but made into crispy critters as well. “

  4. Professor Turley & Darren: when are you going to publish your commentary and analysis on how your fellow Democrat lawyers involved in Arctic Frost (with Jack Smith and your best friend Merrick Garland at the center) deprived over 430 American Senators, journalists, Trump supporters, or Trump employees of their 1st and 4th Amendment rights through color of law? You pride yourself as being a very public national and international defender of civil rights, fighting government abuse of those rights, don’t you?

Why are you hiding from these felonies committed by your fellow Democrat lawyers in government to focus on far less meaningful issues? Nothing To See Here, Please Believe Us, Don’t Believe Your Lying Eyes™???

Civil Rights Division, Department Of Justice: Deprivation Of Rights Under Color Of Law – 18 U.S. Code § 242
    https://www.justice.gov/crt/deprivation-rights-under-color-law

For the purpose of Section 242, acts under “color of law” include acts not only done by federal, state, or local officials within their lawful authority, but also acts done beyond the bounds of that official’s lawful authority, if the acts are done while the official is purporting to or pretending to act in the performance of his/her official duties. Persons acting under color of law within the meaning of this statute include police officers, prisons guards and other law enforcement officials, as well as judges, care providers in public health facilities, and others who are acting as public officials. It is not necessary that the crime be motivated by animus toward the race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status or national origin of the victim.

And when can we expect you to announce your coming out party? The one where you announce that you have just realized that it is your fellow Democrat lawyers in elected office, the justice system, and in the bureaucracy that are the cancer on this nation?

  5. She calls it a “cheap shot” for the senator to publicize the hateful, threatening voice mail she willingly left on his official Senate phone line.

I’ll give her this: she’s got chutzpah.

In fact, her reaction is in line with the traditional Jewish definition-by-example of the word chutzpah: a child who kills his parents and then begs the court for mercy because he’s an orphan.

    1. I would have to say UGLY chutzpah, oldman. At first I was amused by McKnight’s words, until I realized how vile they are. She has discredited herself and has a lot to learn. Is she capable of apologizing to the Senator? Food for thought…

  6. After violent rhetoric on the right for decades, D’s are catching on to their candidates needing to show some fight…

Love your posting this push piece after trump expressed his desire for ICE and CBP to go even harder in his 60 Minutes interview, Turls. Even said outright he wants to turn the Army and Marines on the American populace…

Watch, some wingnut on this blog will say they want to shoot me in the face for saying it. Just like last week.

I, too, hope this R never gets a boner again because him breeding = a bad thing.

And Turls…, your trump support has left you so far past being able to exercise moral indignity that it’s time to be honest with yourself. You’ve supported the guy who was exactly who the framers feared. You’ve profited from him. You don’t get to spike the football. You just need to slip as quietly as you can from public view because you’ve regularly enabled a mad cult leader.

    1. Well…so typical to hurl accusations anonymously, well they are ALL accusations, asserted without evidence; ie, you live and express yourself pursuant to your prejudices, and regretfully one with violent overtones. Ours is a Constitutional Republic, distinctive and unique in the history of our little spaceship Earth. It was created by farmers who had an education in the ‘classics’ of history, which resulted in their avoiding the pitfalls of a Democratic system as those of Greece, and the Imperial blunders of the codified system of a Nation/State like the Romans. They created an Ontological construct with the intention of precluding and prohibiting any one venue of power becoming dominant and on a premise of the preeminence of the Individual. You present yourself as living by a Democratic rule of power and driven by prejudices, the very essence of what our founding framers sought to allude from power, bc you seek it…..the magic of our Constitutional Republic lives so long as one believes in its magic and I believe in magic….

  7. Wow! Ms. McKnight’s phone message to Sen. Sheehy is a compelling piece of entertainment. ❤️ that!

  8. Partly this rage seems to be a sort of social contagion like that which led so many on the the left to embrace transgenderism or Covid vaccinations.

A stupid idea/emotion is adopted because of expected social/emotional rewards from groups one values. Munchausen’s. Fashion. Flavor of the month.

During the late Fifties sack dresses–horrible looking things–became fashionable.

Unfortunately not all fashionable contagions are as harmless as ugly clothes: political rage and transgenderism, for examples.

Confusing the issue are legitimate instances of rage–following Oct 7 for example–and genuine cases of transgenderism (but not as many as we see) and occasions when a sack dress (or burka) would be an improvement, for examples, for Whoopie or Rosie (nobody wants them in a bikini).

But sack dresses didn’t become fashionable organically. They had people and institutions pushing them for profit. I suspect that some cynical people and institutions are also spreading and promoting political rage and violence to serve their own dangerous goals.

Finally, one must wonder why this type of social contagion seems particularly to infect the Left.

Perhaps susceptibility to these social infections is the sine qua non, the core, essential quality that makes one a member of the Left and dangrrously impervious to logic or facts, or reflection.

    1. Young,
I think it has to do with low self discipline. Like the person who watches TV, sees a ad, and without thinking, goes out the next day and buys that product without ever asking themselves if that doo-dad is really going to make their lives better. I think that is why they are so against the idea of delayed self-gratification or savings. It points out their lack of self-discipline. Rather than asking themselves do I really want to commit acts of violence against another person over their political ideology, they just join the mob.

      1. Upstate,
I suspect that we evolved generally to follow groups or consensus because that is the only way large numbers of people could live together when early farming allowed villages and towns to emerge. An uncertain percentage of any population is going to be on one of the tails of the bell curve for compliance with the mass. For want of a better term, the Wimp/Psychopath Quotient.

      1. *. She’s 29, entered AmeriCorps Vista, fine arts emphasis sculpture bachelors and not much else found about her.

Obviously an hysteric without restraint or boundaries. The answering machine was in the Senator’s domecile? Perhaps charges for trespass?

There isn’t an educated generation to carry on. Sheeys no vote on medical co-pays warrants death wishes. Luigi Mangione agrees.

Damian Obama’s insurance idea is the entitlement. Remove it and cover everyone with medicaid major medical. Special categories must go. Personal medical insurance is available for purchase additionally.

  9. So, a spoiled little brat who never grew up. Her parents must be so proud of what they produced. Yet not at all uncommon on Left in America today. To the contrary, it appears to be the norm.

  10. Personally, I am thankful that so many Leftists/Democrats are coming out of the closet about their feelings of hatred, malice, death and murder. It beats the heck out of all that maudlin, whiny, sickening and swarmy “Love Lives Here” bull-shite. Yep, now, when some college puke goes into a fetal position at the sight of a MAGA hat, and demands a safe space, with warm milk and cookies, we can see it for what it is – an attempt to “top from the bottom”, as the gays put it. Just another form of control-seeking behavior.

Plus, is anyone here really surprised by this? Didn’t we already know that the Left was chugging full of hate?

  11. When a person makes death threats, they are investigated and often arrested. But when a politician does it, they get away with it??? doesn’t seem right to me.

    1. In a word, no. “McKnight insists that such threats and insults are justified when you disagree with others.” I have a very different take: threats are never justified, and insults are usually evidence of a poor vocabulary and an even poorer ability to construct a cogent argument. Elementary and middle school children tend to resort to name-calling, as is age-appropriate for them. Adults should be able to communicate on a higher level, dealing with ideas and constructive suggestions.

  12. Jon, you’re supposed to be a historian. Look at comments made in our history. Don’t you know that Thaddeus Stevens wanted to kill every man and boy in the South and turn white women over to the slaves? Hate is part and parcel of American politics.

    1. Jon, you’re supposed to be a historian. Look at comments made in our history.

That is incredibly feeble gaslighting, Sam. You’re attempting to build a legitimate moral equivalency as your defense of today’s DNC as compared to the DNC that you grew up with under Truman, and JFK. You want us to believe you don’t notice that change in the DNC that you have voted for over your lifetime as an adult?

The best you could come up with was reaching back 100 years before you were ever born? Build all the strawmen to do battle with you want Sam – it isn’t going to ever be a credit to you.

    1. Our education system is not teaching our young people the benefits of using one’s self-control. “Better to be thought an idiot than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt,” Haley.

    2. jeanne,
Well, I read a Financial Time article that conservatives have a higher birthrate than progressives. Conservatives at 2.4 vs Progressives at 1.6.
They are literally breeding themselves out of existence.

    3. Call me a mythologist, but saying that she is a “woman” and “sick, twisted and unhinged” is sort of redundant. That is what about 90%+ of women are as a matter of course.

  13. Jezzz talk about stupid

Massachusetts Governor’s aide caught on camera with boxes of drugs:

      1. Well he was arrested by the MASSACHUSETTS state police when 8 kilos of illegal drugs was sent to his state run office. But hey, when you defend anything and everything on the left you sometimes make a fool of yourself.

      2. Aide to Massachusetts governor nabbed in cocaine bust
“An aide to Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey (D) was arrested Tuesday night on cocaine trafficking charges after investigators allegedly intercepted a drug shipment slated for delivery at the Springfield State Office Building.

Lamar Cook, 45, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges of cocaine trafficking in 200 grams or more, unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

Bail was set at $25,000, subject to the outcome of a hearing Friday, his defense attorney told The Hill.

Prosecutors say a shipment of nearly 8 kilograms was intercepted Saturday, before undercover delivery officers packaged approximately 225 grams back up and carried out “a controlled delivery operation” to the state office building where Cook worked.”

Do you ever get tired of being proven wrong, so many times, so easily?
Do you have any sense of shame knowing full well you lie often, get caught in the lie and continue on to lie over and over again?
You would be the perfect example of what is wrong with the Democrat party today.

    1. Dustoff, very interesting but please post a source. Anonymous never posts a source. If you post a source you negate her arguments. When you don’t post a source we who agree with you and are interested in a story are not able to read it. Not having source material allows Anonymous to just say it’s a lie and to tell you to prove it so just prove it in advance. She just makes things up in her head. We should avoid being considered as doing the same thing.

  14. Decent people need to vote for the Republican candidate. We can’t reward violence and injustice and intolerance with elected power.

  15. If you live in Helena and will be voting I think your first thought about McKnight ought to be that she is just plain stupid and should not have any position of responsibility. That includes being a parent.

Next, keep an eye on her, her rage could fester and ultimately make her become dangerous to others.

        1. OldFish,
Your comment was one of common sense. As I noted yesterday, keep your distance from these people. We have no idea exactly how unhinged they really are.
          “Shirley, you jest.”
I see what you did there! Good one!
