“And May All Your Christmases Be [Woke]”: Liberal Pundits Come for Santa and Other Holiday Traditions

“And may all your Christmases be [woke].”

As Santa prepares for his harrowing journey around the world, he is being closely pursued by liberal commentators protesting his race, gender, and capitalist leanings.

The perpetually outraged have finally come for Christmas.

One columnist at Slate called for Santa to be replaced by a penguin due to his race. Aisha Harris admitted that she was being a bit cheeky in pushing the penguin substitute but sought to express “my real concern that America continues to promote the harmful idea of whiteness-as-default.”

From the remaking of Nativity scenes to renaming Christmas trees, it seems like every aspect of the holiday must be subject to a political litmus test both in the United States and around the world.

Back to Santa. The British Brighton and Hove Museums have been the focus of this debate over the reposting of an earlier column by the museum’s Joint Head of Culture Change, Simone LaCorbinière, who explained that the traditional Christmas simply will not do with a Santa who is “too white, male” and a colonizer of elves.

I suppose that when you use public dollars to hire someone who will serve as “Joint Head of Culture Change,” it was only a matter of time before they came for Christmas. After all, the idea is that the British culture must generally change, right?

In a 2023 column titled Decolonising Father Christmas, LaCorbinière warns that Santa is “too white, male” and the traditional story “presents Santa as the ultimate authority of all societies. This asks us to accept colonial assumptions of cultural superiority. It doesn’t recognise the complex realities colonised people face.”

She expresses horror at the fact that Santa is “an old white man [who] supervise[s] the elves’ work.” We can put aside that Santa was identified in “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (1823) as a  “chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf.” LaCorbinière portrays him as a heartless white capitalist living off the labor of a captive elf workforce. She calls for “Santa to work in the factory alongside the elves.”

Changes must be made, according to the museum, to decolonize Christmas and break away from holiday images that are “white, male and non-disabled”:

“This perpetuates the harmful ‘colonial gaze’. Non-Western cultures are ‘othered’. It says that the coloniser has the power to judge all people. And it ignores many communities’ histories and traditions. Telling the story like this teaches new generations that the coloniser knows best.”

Santa is not alone.

In the meantime, NPR noted White Christmas has racist undertones, while Joy Reid has declared Jingle Bells to be a racist song.

Even “It’s a Wonderful Life” is a “bigoted” story fed to the populace to reinforce capitalist and racist values. Professor James Deaville warned recently that “while some viewers see the ending as affirming community, the film also keeps George partly ignorant of how the forces of inequity are actually operating in his largely white community.”

They are the self-flagellants of the holidays, moving through Christmas markets (which are also fascist traditions) with Gregorian chants of guilt.   Here are some enlightened carolers seen recently spreading “Tidings of Great Joy [Reid]” for the holiday:

Clearly there are many liberals who still enjoy the holidays without the need for self-affirming declarations of outrage or disgust.  However, for some on the left, there is little joy in Christmas without identity politics and white guilt. So the more the merrier and, as Tiny Tim declared, “God bless us, every one!”

  1. And as I have been saying for years, it won’t end with just Christmas and it won’t end until we end it.

      1. And Anonymous said, “Christmas? Bah! Humbug!”

Here’s hoping your sour spirit doesn’t dry anyone else’s bones this Christmas.

For the rest of us, a merry heart doeth good like a medicine.

Merry Christmas, and on earth, peace to men of goodwill.

    1. James,
Well said that of leftists. They are without a doubt some of the miserable people.
Merry Christmas to you and yours!!

  2. There is one common bond of DNA in what Professor Turley calls “Woke” and “Liberals” throughout this column: every one of them are his fellow Democrats. Every one of them in elections votes straight ticket Democrat. As Democrats, they push and defend Democrat Marxism, whether it’s cultural, economic, or political. Since Obama, the police state fascism they have made a core operating strategy when in power has not abated.

None of them who so eagerly line up to attack the Christian Christmas, will ever attack Ramadan in the same way. They don’t actually oppose faiths – they oppose Christian faith as one of foundations that built the republic we enjoy today.

Quite simply, Democrats and their theology it is the opposite of what we thought of as “Americanism” – now they work attacking and attempting to tear down the load bearing walls of our American republic. Professor Turley doesn’t condemn his fellow Democrats with faint praise, but instead saves with light humorous criticism.

All that an evil party requires to exist is that its good members say nothing about its evil and not call them out as evil and/or criminals by name.

Good will towards these Democrats at Christmas? Bah, humbug!

    1. The King James has it, “and on earth, peace to men of goodwill.” As to who is and is not of goodwill, well . . . Merry Christmas.

  3. The wishing others a Merry Christmas has been declining for some years. I just noted recently after leaving a restaurant that the waitress wished us happy holidays instead of Merry Christmas. Same in Christmas greeting cards, now a large percentage don’t mention Christmas. It seems there is a feeling, pushed by the media, that wishing someone a Merry Christmas may offend.

    1. I make a point to say Merry Christmas as I am a Christian. Should I see a obvious Muslim, I say Happy Ramadan, should I see an Atheist, I say good luck.

  4. Christmas has many meanings. For most families it is a time to make time to spend together. Religious folks find additional meaning for the day. Retailers watch their numbers hoping for a successful season. Kids find a deluge of gifts to be magical.

Why does the Left hate Christmas? Let’s just assume that once people’s basic needs are met there are those who want more, usually in the form of money and power. Christmas, and Christianity represent unifying traditions that block their aspirations, resistance to the changes required for them to get to their goals.

Their policies and behaviors are so irrational, disjointed, and destructive that it looks to me like their goal is simply dominance via destruction and chaos. They really offer nothing of value as regards the future.

  5. Something like 69% of the US population is Christian. Santa Clause is one part of celebrating Christmas here. What is to be made of Santa haters? The same thing you confront designing a good airplane: parasitic load.

    1. Mike
Sadly, you are correct that 69% of the US population identifies as Christian.
This country lags behind the rest of the Western world in this respect.
Where I come from in New Zealand, only 30% of the population identifies as Christian, and over 50% say thy have no religious beliefs. Most churches have been sold because of poor attendance and lack of funds. The properties have been snatched up and converted into restaurants and unique homes.
Try Googling churches for sale in New Zealand. There are many hundreds up for sale.

This is progress. Soon there will be no Christians.
Unfortunately, the United States is far behind the rest of the world.

      1. I wonder. Does that “behind” keep company with our invention of a Bill of Rights and a triangle of three co- equal branches for governance?

        1. Sadly, you are again correct that the United States lags behind the rest of the world in its system of government.

Unfortunately, you are stuck with an anachronistic 250 year old, 18th century, system of government that produces nothing but gridlock and political bickering and does not serve the country well. Most Western countries have the foresight and ability to modify their systems of government to actually serve the people.

Take New Zealand for example. In the 90’s we moved to a Mixed Member Proportional representation system. Everybody gets two votes. One vote is for a representative in their parliamentary district, and the other vote is for a party, rather than an individual. If the total national vote for a party reaches 5%, then the party is awarded a seat in Parliament, but the member simply represents the party and not a district. There is a sliding scale whereby further party representatives are seated for votes that exceed 5%. This allows individuals to vote for a representative in their district that they like, even if that representative is from a party different from their affiliation, while still being able to vote for their own party.

The net effect is to elect more moderate and centrist representatives who are willing to compromise and do what is best for the country rather than what is best for the party they represent. It also means that representatives from smaller parties can be seated in Parliament. Many New Zealanders deliberately split their votes to give their party vote to one of the smaller parties, simply to ensure that there is more diverse representation.

This system has ensured that it is almost impossible for any one party to gain an absolute majority. This has happened only once. We now have 6 parties with representatives in Parliament, and this forces the parties to form coalition governments with 2 to 3 other parties. This means that government becomes much more representative and the compromises that result serve the people much better. The government becomes much more stable, and the vast majority of people are satisfied with the compromises that result.

Compare that to the American system, where the political process is about seizing and maintaining raw power to the exclusion of the opposition. The American system is antiquated and open to abuse and corruption, as we can see today. In this country, political loyalty is to a party, rather than the country, and the other party is vilified and demonized.

The system of American government may have worked 250 years ago, but it is now an anachronism that creates discord and engenders the behavior that we see today in the way that people identify more strongly as Republicans or Democrats rather than as Americans.

          1. Unfortunately, you are stuck with an anachronistic 250 year old, 18th century, system of government that produces nothing but gridlock and political bickering and does not serve the country well. Most Western countries have the foresight and ability to modify their systems of government to actually serve the people.

Ah – the obliviousness and lack of self awareness our proclaimed betters in New Zealand (and other places) put on display.

It never occurs to them that would be Illegal Aliens from all over the globe pass through numerous refugee friendly nations to target getting into the USA – not New Zealand. Perhaps it’s a good thing: what would New Zealand do with such stupid people if they were willing to offer them succor instead of America being their chosen destination? The average IQ of the elite New Zealand populaton would drop by ten points!

New Zealand, whose forward thinking government has decided that the citizenry shall not be trusted with firearms – because a terrorist from another country committed a mass murder there!

And it is New Zealand and it’s government that other nations turn to asking for support – and with their hands held out for cash that they usually get from America.

Of course, with it’s superior form of governance embraced and voted on by it’s superior citizenry, New Zealand is well known as a hotbed of medical and scientific research and scientific development that completely overshadows America.

The proof of that is the world watches as the brightest scholars from all nations bypass American universities to fight for a slot studying instead at New Zealand’s famed institutions of higher learning. As a result, the discoveries coming out of New Zealand’s famed universities simply eclipse what comes from the academic leftovers that have to settle for studying at American universities.

And the developments that keep coming out of Silicon Valley simply cannot keep up with their counterparts in New Zealand. Any day now all of our cellphones and technology will have “Made In New Zealand” marked all over them.

And all of these superior achievements coming out of New Zealand is completely due to the forethought that New Zealanders have used to craft a much superior governance that results in this obvious superiority.

Y’know, whether it’s communism or the superiority of New Zealand… you can always tidy a turd up and dress it up a bit with fine language to sell it. But you can’t convince people that turd will be tasty if you eat it starting at the clean end.

And of course many those wealthy Americans are voting with their money and their feet to move to New Zealand.

There has been a stampede of ultra-wealthy Americans to buy their way into New Zealand citizenship. There has been a 6,500% increase in inquiries from Americans about moving to New Zealand. Most of them say that they are concerned about the political climate in the US, especially since Trump came to power.

Tech-billionaire Peter Thiel became a New Zealand citizen using an investor pathway of immigration. He owns several luxury properties in a remote part of the South Island. Thiel has pledged to invest heavily in New Zealand’s tech sector, which he has called underrated and underfunded. He said in 2011 that “no other country aligns more with my view of the future than New Zealand.”
In 2016, Silicon Valley entrepreneur Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, revealed in an interview in The New Yorker he had made an agreement with Thiel, that in the event of some political or economic catastrophe, they would fly together to a property Thiel owned in New Zealand.

Larry Page, co-founder of Google has been living permanently in New Zealand since 2021. He lives in a private compound on Waiheke Island.

Movie producer James Cameron, of Titanic fame, is a New Zealand citizen and has lived there permanently since 2012.

Tech-billionaire Reid Hoffman has said he is considering moving to New Zealand.

There are many, many others who have done the same thing, but prefer to keep a low profile according to law firms that facilitate the pathway for American billionaires to move to New Zealand.

As for technology advances, you may want to Google Rocket Lab.
This is a New Zealand company that developed a rocket system that is starting to rival Spacex. They now have billions of dollars in contracts with NASA and the US Defense Dept. The company has expanded its business presence into the US, but the rockets are built and launched in New Zealand.

              1. And of course many those wealthy Americans are voting with their money and their feet to move to New Zealand.

New Zealand Eases “Golden Visa” Rules to Lure Wealthy Investors
                https://thefinancialanalyst.net/2025/02/09/new-zealand-eases-golden-visa-rules-to-lure-wealthy-investors/
In a bold move to revitalize its struggling economy, New Zealand has announced a significant relaxation of its “golden visa” rules. The changes, unveiled on Sunday, aim to attract wealthy investors to the country’s shores, offering a lifeline to an economy that has been battling recession and rising unemployment.

Struggling economy needing a lifeline from wealthy foreigners because it can’t deal with recession and rising unemployment by relying on its New Zealand citizens?

Sure New Zealand didn’t buy these voting feet with your government’s Gold Visa program: easy path to to a second citizenship in your back pocket if you drop a tens of millions of dollars into New Zealand’s risky anemic economy?

You’re claiming they’re moving their business interests, activity and investments out of the USA to reinvest in similar or identical business activities in New Zealand? Or simply building flashy homes and some New Zealand bank accounts while their core business activity remains firmly entrusted back in the USA?

So… you hope that that a few exceptions prove the rule????

And what percentage did the billionaires in New Zealand increase by, because the named Democrat billionaires you listed moved or considered moving there? How many similar self-made New Zealand millionaires do you have to begin with? Or even in total? And what percentage has American billionaires dropped with the decision of what… three or four… to partially move to New Zealand?

Anything you have indicating that any of those individuals you named are also going to extend their trust in New Zealand to moving their business activities and interests out of the US market to reinvest in New Zealand’s struggling economy instead?

you may want to Google Rocket Lab. This is a New Zealand company that developed a rocket system that is starting to rival Spacex.

And that’s the equivalent you offer to all the multiple industries and products developed and supported by Silicon Valley?

Yes, I did look at Rocket Lab and saw this: “Around 2013, Rocket Lab moved its registration from New Zealand to the United States, and opened headquarters in Huntington Beach, California. Headquartered in Long Beach, California, Rocket Lab operates facilities including advanced manufacturing and mission operations centers in Virginia, New Mexico, Colorado, Maryland, Toronto and New Zealand.”

Why, the facility in NZ managed to successfully take very last place – right behind Toronto Canada. How odd that Rocket Lab, founded by a New Zealander, chose to become an American company, and chose to be headquartered in the USA rather than keep their business activities and head officers in the allegedly superior New Zealand! He did’t build homes in the USA and obtain USA citizenship, I hope!

Now that you’ve brought up rockets – tell us about the rest of the New Zealand aerospace industry. Surely you at least have developed your own aircraft to equip your military: defense fighter/fighter bomber aircraft, marine patrol aircraft, search and rescue, transports, etc? Or are you completely reliant on aircraft built in the inferior United States and the UK for what little you have?

Where can we see New Zealand’s leadership in aerospace in the civilian aircraft world? Canada certainly has an aerospace industry – how about New Zealand?

Now tell us about the intellectual powerhouses that are New Zealands universities that are leading to the worlds brightest as well as it’s refugees to now flock to New Zealand instead of US universities.

Again, you can try cleaning up that turd of a form of government that is allegedly better and tell us it is tasty if we pick it up by the clean end you offer to us… but I for one will pass.

                1. Rocket Lab is a New Zealand company, founded by New Zealanders. They moved the company registration to the US for the simple reason that as a New Zealand company they were ineligible for NASA and other US government contracts. The move was a strategic business decision to go where the customers are. The technology and expertise remain in New Zealand hands. Everything is controlled from New Zealand. The CEO, Peter Beck, has not taken US citizenship and remains a New Zealand citizen, living in New Zealand. Rocket Lab has bought other US and Canadian companies that provide support services for their expanding business, but all rockets are built and launched in New Zealand.

There are other major aerospace players in New Zealand.

Dawn Aerospace is headquartered in New Zealand.
They have built a rocket powered space-plane that can take off from a runway and reach space to deploy small satellites, and then land again on the runway. This is something that US companies have not been able to develop.
In November 2024, the Aurora spaceplane broke the sound barrier, reaching Mach 1.12 at 82,500 feet.
It set a record for the fastest climb to 20 kilometers (65,600 feet), surpassing a record held by the modified F-15 Streak Eagle set in 1975.
They also produce satellite propulsion systems and thrusters that use nitrous oxide and propylene as fuel rather than highly toxic hydrazine. This patented technology is in high demand from satellite manufacturers.

Kea Aerospace, also headquartered in New Zealand, has built a solar and battery powered remote controlled drone that can fly above 65,000 feet in the stratosphere and stay aloft for months at a time doing surveillance for civilian and military purposes.

Syos Aerospace builds unmanned remote controlled drones for air, land and sea applications, including commercial and military applications.

NZAero designs and builds 6 different general aviation aircraft in use all over the world.

Not bad for a country of 5 million people.

                  1. I wish New Zealand and its people great success.

But people are leaving New Zealand.

You note that NZ businesses have made changes to participate in the US economy

                    Why is that necescary ?

          2. Tell you what, we will keep our “antiquated “ system of government that has provided more wealth and freedom to more people than ANY government in the history of our world. You keep your tranny Jacinda and go get another shot and booster while confined to your house. Merry Christmas Kiwi!

  6. Here comes Mr X to say that Turley is infringing on people’s free speech, that being anti-Santa is a good thing and that woke is great. Mr Opposite.

      1. Another classic response from our resident juvenile delinquent. I know it’s tough being in your mom’s basement on the holiday, but cheer up because once she is gone you will have your old bedroom back.

  7. I am not very religious (I was raised “sort of” Methodist), but I am a traditionalist. I celebrate Christmas as a time reserved for the sincere exercise of good will toward others. I think that the lyrics to Eddy Fisher’s (a relatively devout Jew) “What Christmas Means To Me” expresses my feelings toward the holiday pretty well. A couple of decades ago I had begun abbreviating the holiday as “XMAS” purely as a convenience, but as attacks on it materialized and mounted, I quickly resumed using “Christmas” as an assertion of tradition (and an act of defiance). All of the demented haters fanricating excuses to trash the holiday can go fvck themsleves (and each other, and hopefully contract a debilitating venereal disease in the process – oops, so much for good will, I guess they have successfully prompted me to become selective on that score). BTW, I think that recognizing Caucasian race and Western culture as a default is a nearly unadulterated positive attribute.

    1. Xmas, according to you, is a “purely as a convenience”. Sorry sir, the X in Xmas is the Greek letter Chi as in Christo 😉

  8. Merry Christmas, Professor Turley and all your readers.
As the great Otis Redding sang, “May all your Christmases be white.”

  9. The penultimate sentence as written reads, “The fact is that, for some on the left, there is little joy in Christmas without identity politics and white guilt.”

The sentence is too narrow in scope. It should read, “The fact is that, for some on the left, there is little joy.”

The Left can only be happy when they are unhappy about something. They hate white men. Imagine hating a fictional, imaginary character who is portrayed as jolly and happy and brings gifts to children. But he’s white. So he must be hated.

Left wing ideology is a serious mental disorder.

    1. We love seeing the good professor point out how ridiculous, full of hate, and just plain ugly (as a person) leftists are. Leftists are some of the most miserable people. And they want everyone to be just as miserable as they are.
BUT! We will not join them in their delusions. We will celebrate Christmas despite them and their nonsensical rantings! We will share in the joy of Christmas with our fellow friends and family! I will be making a special dinner for our friends.

          1. Anon:
I believe you mean Democrat politicians, same thing. (See Jasmine “Ratchet “ Crockett, Ilhan (Incest) Omar, parasitic vermin identification manual , Chapter 2, Section 1).

  10. These people are about much fun as a wet towel on a single digit winter day.
    And they are pathetic.
It is the celebration of the spirit of Christmas. But they would cancel that too.

  11. Merry Christmas Professor. There are always naysayers yet they fade away as the centuries pass on by. Christmas and its meaning remain with us over 2000 years now.
Those poor blighted individuals who cannot live with the thought of Christmas and Love for mankind are to be held with pity as they wander in the wilderness. Good cheer to them anyway and may they some day find peace and redemption, maybe even love.

    1. How in the world can you say that “naysayers fade away as the centuries pass on by”. Gawd, senility really doe take a toll on geriatrics.

  12. OMG!!! That Monty Python clip was so perfect, I laughed until I had tears. That is exactly what the professionally woke do. Unfortunately, the rest of us sometimes get punished too.

  13. How about changing over to the Kwanzaabot who delivers the traditional Kwanzaa gift: a book titled “What the Hell Is Kwanzaa?”

“”Yeah, you got us,” said black dude Achonte Ndukwe. “We all held a secret meeting back in the late ’60s to figure out what we could do to mess with white people. It was decided that making up a holiday out of thin air was the best way to do it.”

  14. You know why the WOKE have come for Santa Claus and Christmas in general? It’s not religion, though that’s the quiet part – not yet spoken. It is that Christmas has become more than a religious holiday. It has become an multinational time to celebrate love, peace, and good will to others. Contrarily, the woke/left believes in conflict, hate, censoring, and above all, obedience to the state.

    1. gdonaldallen,
“Contrarily, the woke/left believes in conflict, hate, censoring, and above all, obedience to the state.”
      That right there!! Great comment!!
Merry Christmas to you and yours!

  15. A friend in Virginia said her downtown has no Christmas decorations up. The left has become Scrooge!
