“And May All Your Christmases Be [Woke]”: Liberal Pundits Come for Santa and Other Holiday Traditions

“And may all your Christmases be [woke].”

As Santa prepares for his harrowing journey around the world, he is being closely pursued by liberal commentators protesting his race, gender, and capitalist leanings.

The perpetually outraged have finally come for Christmas.

One columnist at Slate called for Santa to be replaced by a penguin due to his race. Aisha Harris admitted that she was being a bit cheeky in pushing the penguin substitute but sought to express “my real concern that America continues to promote the harmful idea of whiteness-as-default.”

From the remaking of Nativity scenes to renaming Christmas trees, it seems like every aspect of the holiday must be subject to a political litmus test both in the United States and around the world.

Back to Santa. The British Brighton and Hove Museums have been the focus of this debate over the reposting of an earlier column by the museum’s Joint Head of Culture Change, Simone LaCorbinière, who explained that the traditional Christmas simply will not do with a Santa who is “too white, male” and a colonizer of elves.

I suppose that when you use public dollars to hire someone who will serve as “Joint Head of Culture Change,” it was only a matter of time before they came for Christmas. After all, the idea is that the British culture must generally change, right?

In a 2023 column titled Decolonising Father Christmas, LaCorbinière warns that Santa is “too white, male” and the traditional story “presents Santa as the ultimate authority of all societies. This asks us to accept colonial assumptions of cultural superiority. It doesn’t recognise the complex realities colonised people face.”

She expresses horror at the fact that Santa is “an old white man [who] supervise[s] the elves’ work.” We can put aside that Santa was identified in “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (1823) as a  “chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf.” LaCorbinière portrays him as a heartless white capitalist living off the labor of a captive elf workforce. She calls for “Santa to work in the factory alongside the elves.”

Changes must be made, according to the museum, to decolonize Christmas and break away from holiday images that are “white, male and non-disabled”:

“This perpetuates the harmful ‘colonial gaze’. Non-Western cultures are ‘othered’. It says that the coloniser has the power to judge all people. And it ignores many communities’ histories and traditions. Telling the story like this teaches new generations that the coloniser knows best.”

Santa is not alone.

In the meantime, NPR noted White Christmas has racist undertones, while Joy Reid has declared Jingle Bells to be a racist song.

Even “It’s a Wonderful Life” is a “bigoted” story fed to the populace to reinforce capitalist and racist values. Professor James Deaville warned recently that “while some viewers see the ending as affirming community, the film also keeps George partly ignorant of how the forces of inequity are actually operating in his largely white community.”

They are the self-flagellants of the holidays, moving through Christmas markets (which are also fascist traditions) with Gregorian chants of guilt.   Here are some enlightened carolers seen recently spreading “Tidings of Great Joy [Reid]” for the holiday:

Clearly there are many liberals who still enjoy the holidays without the need for self-affirming declarations of outrage or disgust.  However, for some on the left, there is little joy in Christmas without identity politics and white guilt. So the more the merrier and, as Tiny Tim declared, “God bless us, every one!”

  1. I think that Turley is unaware that Santa is a fictional character bound over from some myth about a guy handing gifts to poor children, the antithesis of modern Republican Conservatism.

Imagine if this was about celebrating the birth of Christ, who is largely absent from the Christmas season. Christmas trees are a borrowed pagan symbol, closer to Wicca than to Christianity.

Santa has been a tool for use by advertisers, with the most modern version a Coca Cola product.

Sure, it’s fun. And if you don’t want it spoiled then stop rooting out those who look for the true meaning.

    1. Charity is inherently conservative – and christian.

      Government handouts are NOT.

      You have things backwards.

Christ did NOT say “I was naked and you voted to steal from others to clothed me, I was sick and you voted to steal from others to care for me, I, I was in prison and you voted to give me cashless bail so that I could get out and hurt others”

There is ZERO merit is voting for govenrment that steals from others to do things YOU think are good.

If you want to claim to be a good person rather than an immoral hypocrite, you must actually do good YOURSELF.

      1. Governments are formed to accomplish things collectively that cannot be accomplished individually.

What part of a Federal highway did you build in our free time? What part of inspecting food processors to ensure your food isn’t a rat dropping filled blend did you do? How many hours do you spend, unpaid, in fighting fires or enforcing laws?

Cashless bail does not allow the accused to get out and hurt others. Bail is set only for those who are deemed unlikely to re-offend and therefore are allowed a cash deposit sufficient to ensure a return to court. In many current cases that bail is simply an additional punishment for being arrested, but not convicted, as most cannot afford the full bail and must forfeit 10% to a bail bond company. It would surprise me not that prosecutors, police, and judges all have investments in bail bond companies. Judges have been found to have financial ties to the prisons they sentence the convicted and those who are coerced to plead guilty into.

The alternative isn’t “more cash bail” it is “held without bail.” The reason they are less likely to do this is that jail space is tight and some places place limits on the number that can held, plus the overhead of holding them. In addition, the prosecution knowing someone is violent can have a motive to ensure they are released and forced to pay the bail fine in anticipation of adding more charges, ones that would not have happened in a speedy trial – which prosecutors also do not want, as it reduces the leverage on getting a guilty plea when the prosecution has insufficient evidence to take to a jury.

    2. “Saint Nicholas of Myra[a] (traditionally 15 March 270 – 6 December 343),[3][4][b] also known as Nicholas of Bari, was an early Christian bishop of Greek descent from the maritime city of Patara in Anatolia (in modern-day Antalya Province, Turkey) during the time of the Roman Empire.[7][8] Because of the many miracles attributed to his intercession, he is also known as Nicholas the Wonderworker.[c] Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, repentant thieves, children, brewers, pawnbrokers, toymakers, unmarried people, and students in various cities and countries around Europe. His reputation evolved among the pious, as was common for early Christian saints, and his legendary habit of secret gift-giving gave rise to the folklore of Santa Claus (“Saint Nick”) through Sinterklaas.”

Not exactly fictional. Nor does “St. Nick” have anything to do with Wicca

“Wicca originated in the early 20th century, when it developed amongst secretive covens in England who were basing their religious beliefs and practices upon what they read of the historical witch-cult in the works of such writers as Margaret Murray.”

The Christmas Tree did not become a part of Christmas celebrations until the early 1800’s in Germany.

The “True meaning” of Christmas is that god so loved the world that he gave his only son for its salvation.

The Christian Tradition of Secret Gift giving goes atleast back to Christ.

      Matthew 6
“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”

And of course there is the secret Giving of St. Nicholas in the 3rd century – 200 years before Christianity encountered Germanic Pagans and
1500 years before the first christmas tree.

Christmas is not the antithesis of Republican conservatism.

      Matthew 22:21

“Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

Charity is the domain of Christianity – NOT Government.

It would be the left wing nut socialist state that is the antithesis of christianity.

There is a reason that Socialists have sought to crush religion.

Socialism is the destruction of morality.
Morality is determined by what a person does and why they do it.

When government is what does purportedly “good things” – there is no merit in it – no morality.
Because morality and immorality are individual.

You are not a good person because of what others do that you voted for.
You are good or evil based on what YOU do – as an individual.

Further if you do good – or in the case of the left – pretend to do good, in order to be seen as a good person
then you are not a good person – you are just another morally neutral actor – trading either the pretense or the actuality of doing good, for the public adulation you hope to receive.

If you wish to do something about racism, sexism or whatever other ism you are peeved about
Succeed in the real world and then YOU can hire those who are discriminated against.

      1. John,

I didn’t say that Christmas traditions was based on Wicca, I said Christmas was closer to Wicca than it is to the Christianity that has Christmas trees and holiday lights and Christmas sales and so on.

The Christmas tree isn’t secret. Wearing a cross isn’t secret. Megachurches, or any congregational church, isn’t secret. Nothing about the majority of Conservation Christianity is actually Christian. It’s about showing others the badges and icons, but not about helping people.

        Here is Conservative Christianity: https://imgur.com/gallery/dementia-dons-faith-advisor-noFxkr2

    3. I doubt seriously those criticizing Santa etc are seeking the true meaning of Christmas. Far from it, but who am I to judge? Sad that we just can’t find joy in anything anymore without it being racist or whatever -ist the liberals want to scream.

      1. As long as the Christmas is White and not Semitic, Conservatives are happy.

Why does it bother you? Turn the other cheek.

  2. The United Nations is a useless anti-American cabal.

  3. . OT

What an error in Trump v. Illinois! Gorsuch dissents–> is this … judicially reviewable?

Alito , Thomas–> protection of federal officers from potentially lethal attacks cannot be thwarted.

It’s very serious as two NG attacked, shot in the head, in Virginia.

These are incredible criminals, bold murderers.

    1. ^^^ ok, just call up the Marines to protect ICE and facilities as they carry out federal law and use rebellion or insurrection in obstruction of federal officers. While they’re at it arrest the Governor, indict for treason. The arrest of criminals is lawful.

Tired of these jokers and fraud.

    2. ^^^ Army reserves if you don’t like the NG. Texas will be happy to lend their NGs as sworn in ICE officers? Bonuses provided. Florida will help out. Nothing says NGs can’t be ICE 👮.

    3. While the decision is likely wrong,
The decision is not to strike the lower courts TRO while the case proceeds.

This is also a complex issue.

The president have the authority to use federal forces to protect federal law enforcement.

But there is no federal general police power (outside of DC) and Federal forces can not be used to enforce state laws or solely for the purpose of reducing crime – that is a function exclusive to the state.

Put differently left wing nuts are allowed to make there states into crime ridden h311 holes and the federal govenrment can do nothing about it.

But states can not thwart federal officials enforcing legitimate federal laws.

      1. No. Domestic violence is covered by the executive and the executive is going into violent areas where ICE is attacked, doxxed and with lethal force. Immigration laws are laws passed by congress and Sanctuary States are rebellion against lawful authority and immigration federal law. State constitutions should have portions upholding immigration laws. The NG is there to protect federal officers from attacks unless State officers can do that without assistance. Clearly Virginia cannot.

The big fraud in cooking the crime books …

Scotus will need a full case on this. Chicago and other places have people hunkering down because they can’t get out of the hellpit. Elderly, poor, handicapped don’t have mobility. The executive represents them in their need and doesn’t merely represent the murderers and robbers.

      2. On the flip side JS, not only did jfk, rfk utilize the 14A, s.5 but Nixon at Kent State also which was quite different as well as other laws.

The NG is not involved in Illinois law; rather, federal law in Illinois.

        Disgraceful

        1. “On the flip side JS, not only did jfk, rfk utilize the 14A, s.5 but Nixon at Kent State also which was quite different as well as other laws.”
Correct – but S5 requires legislation by congress.
Regardless the 14th amendment does not convey a general police power to the Federal government.

“The NG is not involved in Illinois law; rather, federal law in Illinois.”
I beleive that is correct – and if the record produced by the trial court establishes that Trump will ultimately prevail.

But Trump has muddied the waters by claiming that he is sending the NG not merely to protect ICE but to reduce violent crime.
In DC he can do that – the federal govenrment has a general police power in DC.
          In Chicago he can not.

The issues in this case are:

The NG is a STATE force – as a result it can have law enforcement powers within the country that the rest of the military can not.
For Trump to use the NG he must “federalize” them – which is NOT a power in the constitution, it is a power derived from the 14th amendment and laws passed by Congress.

Posse Comitatus precludes the use of the Army and as of 1956 the Air Force from being used domestically for law enforcement.

The 2022 NDAA expanded that to cover United States Navy, Marine Corps, and Space Force.

Prior uses of the NG by presidents were in response to either clear civil rights violations – where the 14th amendment would apply or Riots

I am not personally concerned with Trump’s use of the NG – but what about the next Democrat president who decides to us the NG to go after all the conservative groups that the SPL lists are violent racists.
          “Disgraceful”

It is Governors should be cooperating with Trump.

Regardless the president can not use the NG for law enforcement without the consent of the governor, or a clear violation of the 14th amendment.

He likely can to protect ICE doing its job – but that would be limited to protecting ICE.

      3. . It’s so ignorant out of Illinois the lower courts thought regular forces meant the police force as it was presented to them.

NG, Army Reserve sworn in as ICE officers should do it. A little side hustle with bonus…Abbott and DeSantis would be thrilled.

      4. . “WHENEVER UNABLE is a pretty big ,JS, and as Alito points out the opinion added their own language. 😂. Unable isn’t qualified – for practical reason or legal reasons? WHENEVER…Is that never on Sundays?

        Egg nogged..

        1. . Insurrection. Preventionof denial of federal law in Illinois. It should be thrown out as Illinois has no authority to deny nor hinder federal officers in lawful duty.

Abrego garcia stopped in Tennessee with 8 passengers one FBI claimed a terrorist. Feds let him go. THP was outnumbered but any follow up on the FBI direction?

          1. Republicans shouldn’t apologize. Democrats are major criminals. Realize it.

      5. Highest rates of violent crime are in the Reddist states. Collapsing industries, hollowed out by the billionaires and shipped to China leave a huge hole filled with methamphetamines and alcohol.

        1. Correction: Highest rates of violent crime are in the Democrat controlled urban areas of the Reddist states. There. Fixed your statement

      6. The executive can use the military for drugs or toxic chemicals which drugs are.

They’ve jumped the gun on “regular forces” as military. Police force as an example of usage and congress has no problem in using the military forces, army, air force etc in other laws. There’s no reason to exclude police force at this juncture.

It isn’t logical. Gorsuch brings this up using the word “seems” when speaking of the preliminary conclusion that regular forces is military. Excluding this idea throws off the logic in the section.

JS, no doubt you’re capable of the logic in the way its written.

It’s very serious. It can’t be allowed to just dangle. It’s unsigned. It’s most dangerous in the hands of the lawless democrats.

      7. 10 u.s.c. 12406 does give him that power because he must execute federal law and at any time when he’s unable … 18 u.s.c is of no use…

I surrender. KBJ wrote that mess.

        1. This is not a final constitutional decision, it is merely an effort to get a TRO lifted.

Trump made a mess of this by repeatedly stating that he was looking to do in Chicago what he did in DC (DC is federal).

Had he stuck to protecting ICE he would likely be OK.

While this TRO is likely overly broad – the DOJ was looking for an overly broad decision in its favor too.

TRO’s are only in effect until the lower court holds hearings and renders a final decision.
THAT will be based on a record, and not a bunch of claims by either side.
If DOJ does not seek broad authority to use the NG anytime anywhere for any purpose
they will either win at the trial court or on appeal.

It is wrong to presume too much from these emergency appeals on TRO’s and the like.
They are not being decided on the merits, but on the rules of judicial procedure regarding TRO’s and Preliminary injunctions.
Trump has done well on that so far because many of these TRO’s have gone way too far and violate common law.
But all do not – and SCOTUS is not going to 2nd guess lower courts ecept on clear violations of judicial procedure or common law absent a hearing and a record.

President John F. Kennedy sent federal troops, including the U.S. Army and federalized Mississippi National Guard, to the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) on September 30, 1962, to quell violent riots by segregationists trying to prevent James Meredith’s enrollment as the first Black student, resulting in clashes, two deaths, and hundreds of injuries, a major turning point in civil rights enforcement.

    1. The Supreme Court possesses the judicial power and may judge and issue a decision.

The Supreme Court possesses no executive power and has no ability to exercise executive power.

JFK exercised the pertinent executive power in 1962.

President Trump may exercise the executive power.

Congress may impeach and convict the president for treason, bribery, or other crimes of high office and misdemeanors.

      1. President Trump may and should exercise the executive and commander-in-chief powers in defiance of the very same Supreme Court that did not contradict or strike down JFK’s actions in 1962 Mississippi.

Congress may impeach and convict the president for treason, bribery, or other crimes of high office and misdemeanors.

    2. Always fun that the Christian symbol is where Christ was tortured to death and not the tomb of the claimed resurrection.

        1. The point was dying for our sins, actually. The crucifix is a symbol of Christ’s sacrifice for sinners.

  6. While they can all think as they choose they need to understand it’s not ok to tell others what to think and do. Woke crap is gone, deal with it !
