Rage and the Republic Becomes an Amazon Bestseller on First Day

Today, my book, Rage and the Republic: The Unfinished Story of the American Revolution, has finally hit the shelves. I am delighted to report that the book opened the week on Monday at 4th on Amazon’s bestsellers before the release. It was also ranked 1st on the History, Constitutions, Democracy and other subject categories. I am deeply grateful to everyone who has ordered the book, which was released to coincide with our 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

“In this book, Professor Turley explores the meaning and future of democracy on the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. The book is divided into two halves. The first half looks back at the unique confluence of people and events that led to the establishment of the American Republic. Using Thomas Paine as a common thread through both the American and French Revolutions, Turley explores how one revolution led to the world’s oldest and most stable democracy while the other led to the “Terror.” The difference came down to the protections in the Madisonian system against “democratic despotism,” a tendency of democracies to devour themselves in majoritarian terror.

The second half of the book looks forward, exploring whether the American Republic can survive in the 21st Century in light of changes ranging from AI to robotics to global governance systems. Turley believes that the American Republic is uniquely suited to address those challenges, but it will require a return, not a rejection, of the core values that defined the American Revolution. That includes what Turley calls a “liberty-enhancing economy” that affords citizens the freedom of self-determination and true independence. Drawing from sources across art, philosophy, history, literature, and economics, Turley presents a unique and passionate perspective on the future of American democracy.”

Rage and the Republic: The Unfinished Story of the American Revolution may be purchased from AmazonBarnes & NobleTargetBam!WalmartHudson, and other sites.

I am also thankful for the positive early reviews of the book from liberals and conservatives.

  1. Always a good sign to hear the author reading on Audible. Brilliant work! Thank you for rescuing the memory of Thomas Paine, the unsung hero of the American revolution. Here in England most people have never heard of him. He is not taught in the schools. January 10th was the 250th anniversary of the publication of ‘Common Sense’. No mention by any major national newspapers or TV channels. One of the most important figures in history!

  2. Congratulations, Prof. Turley…!!! I just finished re-reading your book ‘The Indispensable Right’ and now started ‘Rage and the Republic..’ Your writing is Phenomenal on all levels…. We are Blessed by your teaching.. your sharing.. your insights, perspectives and understanding.. through your Books and daily Analyses of Living History unfolding… There is Great Appreciation for you here!

  3. Any discussion of one source of rage about immigration actions – the confusion over a need for a criminal versus administrative warrants to detain an illegal alien?

    1. A judicial warrant is required to enter private property. An administrative warrant can be used if the person in question is on the street or if the property owner agrees to allowing ICE onto the property

  4. Look at the space Trump occupies in GiGi’s tiny brain. She has no life. Thinks of nuthin else. He drives her batty. She is miserable, absolutely torn to pieces over this man who doesn’t know she exists. I’m betting she’s allowed to use the library during certain non-lock down hours.

    1. Look at the space Trump occupies in MAGA’s tiny brains. They have no life. Constantly having to white knight who they picture as a muscled warrior fighting for them, but is just an obese grifter stealing from MAGA followers and robbing the Federal government blind.

  5. Got it! Cracking the cover now. Thank you so much for your bravery and sense, Professor Turley and team. Like Elon Musk, who, whatever you think of him, saved discourse by buying Twitter, you all are doing good every single day. And it is so very appreciated.

  6. The Trump supporter was probably full of rage when the protestor was struck by a four-thousand- pound missile. I wonder if the Trump supporter will be labeled “a domestic terrorist”. I also wonder if Turley will write an article about this.

  7. I preordered it and it’s scheduled to arrive today. Always appreciate the opportunity to learn more from you, Professor. Even after writing on these subjects myself, there’s no substitute for being taught by someone who’s spent a lifetime thinking and writing carefully about them.

  8. “You bring a gun into the District, you mark my words, you’re going to jail,” Pirro said on Fox News Monday afternoon. “I don’t care if you have a license in another district, and I don’t care if you’re a law-abiding gun owner somewhere else. You bring a gun into this District, count on going to jail, and hope you get the gun back, and that makes all the difference.”

  9. Here’s what being an “Amazon Best Seller” really means–which ISN’T that the book is any good–just that it sold more copies than others in that category at one point in time–a statistic that is easily manipulated and which authors hope will become self-fulfilling:

“What Does Being an “Amazon Best Seller” Really Mean
Being an “Amazon Best Seller” means that a product is currently performing at the top of its sales category on Amazon. This status is not a static title but a dynamic label that reflects a product’s recent sales velocity and its position relative to other products within a specific category or subcategory. The Amazon Best Sellers Rank (BSR) is the metric used to determine this status, with a lower BSR number indicating higher sales performance. The BSR is recalculated frequently, often hourly, based on current and historical sales data, and is only relevant within its specific category or subcategory. Sales velocity, the rate at which a product sells, is the primary factor in determining the BSR. Products that achieve this status are seen as popular and reliable, which can create a self-reinforcing sales cycle. ”

I read Turley’s MAGA-purchased material often–and the “age of rage” theme is just one way to detract from Trump’s historic incompetence, the damage that he has and continues to do to: our economy, our democracy, relations with our allies, the Constitution, the rule of law, respect for the judiciary and our standing in the world.

Turley uses the “age of rage” catchphrase to minimize or belittle the outrage people do and should feel over Trump and his historic unpopularity, his historically-incompetent and unqualified cabinet and administration, his endless lying, Republicans’ failure to do their job as a co-equal branch of government, his concealment of his involvement with Jeffrey Epstein, using our taxpayer dollars for retribution, ICE’s outrageous taking over of blue cities and abuse of citizens, including the murders of two Minneapolis citizens, and the endless attacks against Democrats.

AND, Turley’s book is only 4th on Amazon–not the NYT bestseller list. Since Turley has decided to use whatever he thinks his credentials are to defend MAGA and Trump and to attack Democrats, nothing he writes has any value as far as I and many others are concerned.

    1. So, thousands if not millions of people are buying the good professors book as they want to read it, they like what he has to say and they liked his previous book.
And it just came out today. Could be on the NYT best selling list by next week. Also, just did a look, the Amazon and the NYT list are nearly a mirror of each.

      1. Turley’s book is NOT on the NYT Bestseller list. Where did you get the figure of “thousands if not millions of people” purchasing Turley’s book?

          1. Turley’s first book never made the NYT Bestseller list either. Who says that Republican clubs aren’t buying it to make it appear successful because Turley has turned MAGA pundit, so as to prop up his credibility, just like they did with the “Melania” movie, which is being peddled by Republican groups and far-right groups that are buying blocks of tickets to help Trump save face? There are reports that they are not only giving away tickets but even paying $50 a head to get people to go to the theaters so jouranlists can’t report that theaters were empty.

            1. Dear Anon. Troll.. you are so full of it.. the only high mark you can get here is based on the outrageous lies you post .. the movie theatre where we saw Melania to-day was full of normal people who bought their own tickets and it was clear we all enjoyed the film, a solid work of Art and History….

    2. What sensible forward thinking cutting edge leading nation is having a DEBATE on whether or not there should be VOTER ID?!?!!!! Like?!?!? They’re actually fighting NOT to have ppl present ID while voting for your leaders!!!!! Do you get it?!?!!!! Do you get it now?!?!!!
      — Nicki Minaj (@NICKIMINAJ) February 2, 2026

CNN’s Harry Enten: “A photo ID to vote is not controversial in this country. It is not controversial by party — and it is not controversial by race. The vast majority of Americans agree with @NICKIMINAJ.” @DailyCaller https://t.co/IGtKg3lsmo pic.twitter.com/9QteRAeLmn

And then there is ol Chuck,

The SAVE Act would impose Jim Crow style restrictions on voting. It will be dead on arrival in the Senate.

      My statement: pic.twitter.com/OAJRsmgkWn
      — Chuck Schumer (@SenSchumer) February 2, 2026

Chuck just got schooled by Nicki Minaj!

      1. Ok – to get the national ID you have to go to the hospital you were born in, in person, and have them compare your baby foot prints to the ones you have now. If they don’t match exactly you cannot be confirmed as being an American citizen and will be deported. That is the only method to ensure you are an American citizen born in the US. If the hospital no longer has those records or no longer exists, you cannot get the national ID and are considered an undocumented alien. If you were born in a house the record never existed and you are deported for being an undocumented alien.

The SAVE act is a step in that direction. It is intended to increase the documentation requirements beyond those for any other ID. This is so that those without the means to stand in line at some bureau for hours to try to get the required paperwork

      2. Voter ID was not needed when 98% of us voted in person, in our neighborhoods, on the same day, but turning voting day into voting month where you can vote anywhere in the county makes multiple votes quite passible.
Couple that withe high volume return of msiled-out ballots, and there are no built-in safeguards. Oregon seems a joke.
And why were 4 million fewer ballots cast in 2024 than 2020? What happened to those voters? Did they even exist? The media doesn’t care.

    3. Yes, best-sellers are best-sellers only at a point in time. Huckleberry Finn is no longer on the best-sellers list, for example.

  10. I take it that the book as a best seller is “all the rage”. Can’t wait to read it. Could we expect some of the public vitriol exposed by this blog to be in the book? Congratulations.

  11. Nadine Strossen–I liked her. Maybe Prof. Turley’s next book should be The Life and Death of the ACLU.

  12. Don’t worry, JT is right on top of this. At least after he drinks his champaign celebrating his “free speech rage” tour.

George Pappas, a former immigration judge in Georgia, argues that the United States’ immigration system is in total disarray during Trump’s second presidency.

    1. It’s true. It was, however, thriving under Sleepy. Now, That was some presidency! Right Hunter, my liege?

    2. JT drinks Champaign Illinois??? What are you babbling about now?? Did you go to a Learing center to learn how to spell??

    1. Actually that is not a bad idea. Those people would be informed and knowledgeable about history and a comparison to current events. They would be leaps and abounds more informed and knowledgeable than most indoctrinated illiberals.

    2. Reminds me: I have never met anyone who bought a copy of Biden’s memoirs, the book deal that made him a multimillionaire, and bought him his beach house

      1. Biden got a $10M book deal and followed up with a $1.8M event tour.

“Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship, and Purpose by Joe Biden, released in November 2017, sold over 234,000 copies within its first few months. By mid-2019, reports indicated the memoir had sold over 300,000 copies. It was a bestseller, ranking highly on Amazon’s political biography list and selling 1,500 copies for a single,high-profile event.
        Key Sales and Performance Data:
Initial Sales: 234,000 copies as of February 2018 (NPD BookScan).
Higher Estimates: Over 300,000 copies reported by July 2019.
Rankings: Placed 4th on Amazon’s political biography list in early 2018.
Context: The book’s success was bolstered by a 30-event tour that contributed to $1.8 million in related earnings. ”

Mayor Martin J. Walsh spent more than $18,000 on 1,500 copies.

In comparison, Turley’s book sales are kept secret.

        1. Hardback copies of Joe’s books listed for $30, for a net loss of $1 million, even if the cost of manufacturing and distribution were zero, and distributors and book sellers took no profits.

  13. I picked up my copy at Barnes and Noble yesterday, and started reading it last night. Bravo, Professor Turley!
