I have been writing about the decline of free speech in the United Kingdom for years, including in my book The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage. One of the most critical components of the British censorship system is Ofcom, the Office of Communications, which regulates the broadcasting, internet, telecommunications, and postal industries. The most recent controversy is detailed in the Telegraph, with Ofcom investigating GB News over the simple replaying of a Trump interview in which he called climate change a “hoax.” Ofcom is investigating GB News for failing to challenge Trump’s characterization, even though many people share his views on climate change.
It is a breathtaking demonstration of the censorship culture in the United Kingdom. World leaders make controversial statements in every interview. A free press allows the public to hear such viewpoints and reach their own conclusions on the merits of such arguments or policies.
The debate over the climate change data continues to rage. The dates for dire predictions for massive environmental disasters, including those of Al Gore, have passed. Professor Guy McPherson received widespread press attention for his 2016 prediction that the entire human race would be wiped out by 2026. It appears that he is wrong.
Al Gore received the 2007 Peace Prize for his film The Inconvenient Truth as media, academic, and government censors attacked anyone questioning his data. His apocalyptic predictions have not borne out, and recent scientific papers have rejected the predictions found in the underlying studies.
Gore predicted more frequent and stronger hurricanes, but some insist that global data reveal a slight decline in both frequency and intensity. Others argue that the number may be decreasing but the intensity is increasing. We have not seen the type of global hurricane disaster that Gore described in the movie.
Critics point to NASA data to argue that the areas burned by wildfires have fallen by more than 25 percent over the past quarter of a century.
While the global population quadrupled in the last century, deaths from climate-related disasters have plummeted from the 1920s, when an average of nearly half a million people died annually from such events.
Even the film’s famous use of polar bears has not panned out. Polar bear populations have more than doubled from around 12,000 in the 1960s to over 26,000 today. While some have contested those figures, it has certainly not resulted in the wipeout predicted by Gore.
I believe that climate change is real, and there are other signs of more severe climate events, including flooding, that present real dangers for various countries. The point is not to say that it is all a hoax, but that reasonable people can disagree on this question.
That brings us back to the British censors.
In the last two decades, free speech protections in the U.K. have been eviscerated and the government is doubling down on the criminalization of speech. The criminalization of speech has expanded exponentially as individuals and groups call the police to silence those who criticize them or advocate opposing views.
Even silent prayer or “toxic ideologies” can lead to arrest. Expressing concerns over Western cultural values is now treated as an admission of “right-wing ideology,” warranting investigation. A few years ago, a neo-Nazi living with his mother was found to have a room filled with hateful symbols and material.
Judge Peter Lodder dismissed free speech concerns over the defendant’s possessions with a truly Orwellian flourish: “I do not sentence you for your political views, but the extremity of those views informs the assessment of dangerousness.” Calling the defendant “a right-wing extremist,” Mr. Lodder said the contents of his room were evidence of “enthusiasm for this repulsive and toxic ideology.”
The British people have become conditioned to censorship as different groups seek to silence those who express opposing viewpoints. The result is one of the most speech-phobic nations on Earth as offices like Ofcom fuel the fear of free speech.
If a climate researcher publishes a paper saying there’s not much of a problem, they get no accolades and no funding, only hostility.
If a climate researcher publishes a paper saying there’s a massive problem, they get praises and millions in grants.
Do you think that has any effect on conclusions reached by climate researchers?
Yes. climate researchers are smart therefore they go where the money is, just like bank robbers. There is political money in boosting any climate change “research” that says what the political class is paying for, in order to further their money grabbing grift, a skill learnt from abusing the suicidal empathy for ‘identities’ they keep promoting as well.
It all comes down to the left’s greed problem.
Most climate cultists don’t even know that CO2 only makes up 0.04 percent of the atmosphere; that’s .0004 of the atmosphere. That’s 4/100,000
You mean 4 / 10,000.
You realize that water vapor (H2O) is by far the major greenhouse gas, at 10,000 ppm.
It’s 1% of the atmosphere at sea level.
In the desert, what’s the difference between a nighttime clear sky vs. overcast sky?….in terms of how cold it will be in the morning? That blanketing of heat from radiating out into nighttime space is the greenhouse effect — even though the greenies are too dumb scientifically to recognize so obvious an example.
Do you need any more proof that increasing the concentration of H2O in the atmosphere holds back more heat?
Anybody want to call a bone-chilling clear night in the desert a “hoax”?
Methane and CO2 have the same effect, but not nearly as noticeable because water vapor has a very noticeable effect when it clumps into clouds. The other greenhouse gasses don’t clump that way.

Climate change is real, the geological record is clear on this. But from that record it is also clear that climate change caused by Co2 human activity is clearly a hoax. The date on ice cores in Antartica and Greenland make that abundantly clear. Earlied I had accepted the Al Gore, etc. position. But from what I learned during COVID especially from Professor Norman Fenton in the UK and a geologist in Australia I no longer do, Net zero is ideocy that is amongst other things impovershing the UK.
The hoax is that government can tax people’s wealth, employ and implement their stupid ideas that serve no one other than their pals, destroy economies, and provide any realistic fix to anything!
Keeping climate alarmism going is essential to the continued running of the gravy train.
Stop using the word hoax. America was founded on scientific rationalism.
The ice age is a hoax! right?
If climate change is real, and it’s not, do you really think giving all our money to leftys will fix it?
Hearland Institute Promotes Climate Denial
The Heartland Institute is an American conservative and libertarian 501(c)nonprofit public policy think tank known for its rejection of both the scientific consensus on climate change and the negative health impacts of smoking.
Founded in 1984, it worked with tobacco company Philip Morris throughout the 1990s to attempt to discredit the health risks of secondhand smoke and lobby against smoking bans.[5]: 233–234 [6] Since the 2000s, the Heartland Institute has been a leading promoter of climate change denial.[7][8]

The argument is human induced change, not simply change in itself. Weather and climates do not sit still, but move around all the time.

“I believe that climate change is real, and there are other signs of more severe climate events, including flooding, that present real dangers for various countries. The point is not to say that it is all a hoax, but that reasonable people can disagree on this question.”
You should probably specify whether you mean “anthropogenic climate change” (formerly “global warming”), which is what the activist advocates usually mean. A changing climate is real, because the Earth’s climate is a dynamic system driven by the Sun. I don’t think anyone rationally denies the climate ever changes. The evidence for catastrophic consequences driven by Man’s activities is scant however, though reasonable people can disagree.
Trump’s War On Science
For more than a half-century, a prestigious scientific arm of the federal government did groundbreaking research aimed at saving American lives. It studied fertility, asthma, wildfires, drinking water, climate change and myriad other health threats.
One scientist, a doctor and expert in lung health, has recently been reassigned to a finance office. Another, an epidemiologist, has been told she has a new job issuing permits to handle hazardous waste. A toxicologist researching so-called forever chemicals on the East Coast has been asked to move to Dallas and hasn’t been told whether the research project will continue.
In just one year, it has been almost completely dismantled.
They are among more than 1,500 biologists, chemists and other experts at the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Research and Development who have been laid off, reassigned or pressured to retire. Today, only 124 researchers remain, and this month they must decide whether to remain employed they will abandon their work and move to different parts of the agency, or the country.

“Shut up” has never been a very convincing argument.
I think the main reason that CAGW has such immense appeal on the left is that it can be sold as an existential problem that can only be addressed on a global scale, requiring massive government intervention and loss of individual freedoms. What the left fears and despises more than anything is accountability; they feel that their ideas are so self-evidently correct that any sort of cost-benefit analysis is insulting. When analysis happens anyway despite their objections, the failures are explained away by claiming inadequate implementation. Even ideas that have proven very successful over time required immense and ongoing trial-and-error, but the left demands immunity from that process. Implementing the left’s remedial climate change efforts locally has proven to be economic suicide, hence their need to push their agenda on a global level, to eliminate competition from countries not inclined toward self-destruction.
The CAGW issue has probably been the single biggest driver in the bifurcation of media consumption in the US. The true believers cling to the traditional media outlets, those that chafe at spoon-fed group-think/right-think search for alternate sources of corroborable information that don’t insult their intelligence.

AI SUMMARY: Melting Glaciers
There are approximately 215,000 to 220,000 glaciers in the world, excluding the massive Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets.
Because of rising global temperatures, nearly all of these glaciers are thinning and actively losing mass, meaning hundreds of billions of tons of ice disappear annually.
Glaciers are shrinking and breaking at unprecedented rates. The current situation is defined by several alarming metrics:
Total Annual Loss:
Glaciers collectively lose roughly 450 billion tons of mass every year.
Total Number Vanishing:
Currently, approximately 1,000 glaciers disappear entirely on an annual basis. If global warming continues on its current trajectory, this rate is projected to triple, with thousands vanishing every single year.
Sea Level Rise:
Melting glaciers currently account for roughly 25-30% of observed global sea-level rise.
Projected Future:
Under current global warming trends, up to 79% of glaciers are projected to melt completely out of existence by the year 2100.
…………………………….
“Nothing to see here”, says the MAGA commenter. “Glaciers are always melting”.
AI Overview
The last major glacial period (“Ice Age”) peaked around 20,000 years ago. The vast glaciers began significantly retreating about 11,700 years ago, marking the start of our current geological epoch, the Holocene.
The Timeline at a Glance
100,000 years ago: The last major glacial cycle began.
26,000 to 20,000 years ago: The Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Ice sheets were thickest, and sea levels were about 125 meters (410 feet) lower than today.
11,700 years ago: The Earth warmed, transitioning us out of the ice age and into our current climate period.
The Big Picture: Are we still in an Ice Age?
Geologically speaking, yes! We are currently living in an interglacial period (a warmer phase) within the broader Quaternary Ice Age, which began about 2.6 million years ago.
Mankind barely survived the last maximum and has forgotten in this interstitial but the science is clear. Generating CO2 is mankind’s greatest survival tool since the stone point.
NYC is at sea level. How much has rising water encroached on its streets?
The climate is constantly changing. That’s been true for as long as planet Earth has had an atmosphere. Wherever you live, the low temperature for the day was likely around 10-15 degrees cooler than the high. That people pretend a 1.5F increase the planet’s average temperature is a crisis amazes me.
10,000 years ago – the blink of an eye in geologic terms – ice between 1 mile and 2 miles thick covered the land mass where cities like Buffalo, Toronto, Detroit, Chicago and Milwaukee now stand. It melted to create the Great Lakes long before man began using oil to make his life more bearable.
Fossils of crocodiles twice as large as the largest crocs in the Nile today have been discovered north of the Arctic Circle. Seashells have been found in the Sahara Desert. Climate always changes.
BTW, just so you know, Earth is “greening”. Many research papers supporting that fact have been published. And it’s not by a small amount. It’s adding new biomass at a huge rate. In Jesse Ausubel’s outstanding document, “Nature Rebounds”, scientists estimate Earth is adding 2 BILLION tons of new biomass every year. And that’s just on land, which is only 29% of Earth’s surface. The edges of deserts are greening. High altitude areas that could barely support scrubs now support a diverse range of life forms.
https://phe.rockefeller.edu/docs/Nature_Rebounds.pdf
Virtually every country in the West with an industrial, advanced economy is experiencing an increase in forest growth.
In the US, the black bear population is exploding. Some municipalities in New England now get more nuisance calls about bears than dogs. New Jersey had what was supposed to be a one time bear hunt in 2003. The first hunt since the 1970s/ Animal rights activists threw a tantrum. It almost got cancelled, despite biologists warning that if the herd were not thinned, the bear population would exceed the carrying capacity of the existing habitat. The result would be bears dying from disease, malnutrition, and threats to humans would increase. Well, after that one time bear hunt in 2003 the biologists continued to monitor the bear population and recommended a second hunt in 2005. New Jersey has had an annual hunt yearly since 2010 – except in 2021, when the Democrat governor succumbed to pressure from animal rights groups. He then called the bear population a wildlife emergency and resumed the hunt annually after that.
In 1960, there were maybe 400 breeding pairs of bald eagles. Now there are tens of thousands.
Biologists estimate the whitetail deer population was around 300,000 in 1900. Today it’s estimated to be between 30 and 35 million.
The EPA monitors six major air pollutants. The decline since EPA was created in 1972 is astounding. One of those pollutants has declined by 98%. Most of the others have declined by 60-70%. We can get cleaner air, but we’ve reach the point of diminishing returns. In colloquial terms, the low hanging fruit has been picked. You can still get cleaner air – the fruit at the top of the tree – but the calories you expend to get it may not be worth the calories the fruit will supply you.
I could go on and on and on.
Without enough CO2, giant crocs will dominate again. The higher oxygen levels is what allowed such giants.
Burn coal today to avoid giant mosquitoes tomorrow.
This is good. We are in the middle of an ice age. You don’t want to see those mile high glaciers come back but they’re gonna and it’s complete hubris and ego-centric to believe otherwise. We need to burn more carbon to stave it off. That’s the real climate change. The last glacial maximum almost finished the human race. This is science.

Far from perfect, especially for the poor. But not a “failure”.
BS. The FCC was created by Congress in 1934. It’s had almost 100 years to have someone or some thing challenge its constitutionality. Do you think you are the first to be unhappy with one of its findings?

You cite. Congress creates laws einstein. How is regulating abuses of a public possesion like the airwaves illegal?
The message might be better accepted if environmentalists and others having the same concern would instead focus on the notion of Stopping Pollution rather than using controversy generating labels such as Global Warming and Climate Change. Surely it is a matter of semantics but it helps in not creating barriers to others listening to their position on the topic and perhaps being more likely to accept their recommendations.
It’s a bit difficult to find someone who directly advocates a pro-pollution mindset. (i.e. Pollution benefits the world) Most people do not want more pollution. That is the common ground to begin with.
Next would be to stop going for non-workable and sometimes extreme measures, but onces that are easily and incrementally over time achievable. Here is an example of a bad goal vs an achievable one that is not considered: Electric Cars vs. Hybrids.
Governments in in some areas mandated that all new vehicles must be electric by a certain date. That pie-in-the-sky goal was not achievable due to numerous factors: Cost, lack of electrical infrastructure, questions as to rare-earth sources, the environmental cost of sourcing the batteries, technology limitations, and the fact that much or in some areas most of the source of the electricity was fossil fuels which made much of the benefit moot.
A better position would have been to encourage the adoption of hybrid cars which can in many cases can significantly increase the fuel mileage and thus lessen the pollution nearly proportionately. This technology is readily available and costs the consumer less of a premium over a standard gas motor vehicle, than the premium for a fully electric car.
Yet the pols and the environmentalists insisted on fully electric cars. They got big pushback and in the end, their efforts are likely to fail to achieve fruition. If instead they had incentivized the consumer to buy hybrid cars, a workable solution, over the years they might have actually succeeded in significantly reducing the pollution caused by motor vehicles, a large contributor to overall pollution in the environment.
Next, keep politics out of conservation.
Darren,
Great comment.
Another thing that is rarely taken into consideration or spoken out loud is the inputs for a EV and eventual disposal when it has reached it’s end of life. Not only the rare earth metals to be mined but the amount of copper required. The additional weight (a Tesla Model S weights more than my F150), wear and tear on tires.
Solar panels have a average life span of 25 years (note, the efficiency of the panels degrades over time). Right now only 10% are recycled. The rest are landfill bound. And they contain heavy metals that are considered toxic.
Wind turbine blades are made of fiber glass. Recycling them is cost prohibitive with the disposal being land fill.

Darren, The term ‘Climate Change’ was adopted by George W’s administration to replace ‘Global Warming’ which was thought to be too controversial.
The American thesis is freedom. Free enterprises are free to build and self-regulate; free people are free to consume, all occurring in free markets. This nonsense about the Earth being billions of years old is pure hogwash from leftist scientist who get indoctrinated in those dens of iniquities known as universities.
This kind of non-quantitative argument appeals to the emotional impulse toward escapism, not logic.
The issue deserves “How much change, at what rate, and by what physics/chemistry mechanism”?
Hey, Einstein, enjoy:
Scientists look at this timeline through two complementary lenses:The Continuum View: Everything is interconnected. The Big Bang set the universal laws of physics, thermodynamics, and matter in motion. In this sense, the birth of matter was the absolute root cause and necessary precursor for every planetary climate that exists today. The Categorical View: Astrophysicists and planetary scientists use specific terms to mark distinct phases of complexity. They separate the quantum physics of the early universe from the astrophysics of galaxy formation, and finally the meteorology/climatology of fully formed planets.Ultimately, your point highlights a profound truth about the cosmos: everything we experience today, from a gentle breeze to a localized rainstorm, is just a highly evolved, cooled-down expression of that initial spark of creation.
